The 2017 Golden Globe nominations are in, and to no one's surprise, La La Land leads the pack with an impressive seven nominations, including ones for best lead actor and actress. In the Old Hollywood–inspired musical, aspiring actress Mia, played by Emma Stone, and dedicated jazz musician Sebastian, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, sing and dance their way through a charming love story that chronicles the perils of ambition and love.

In one of the standout scenes of the film, depicted on the movie's poster, Mia wears a beautiful canary yellow dress as she dances with Sebastian against the backdrop of a picturesque Los Angles sky. It's an iconic moment in the storyline and one of the best of many colorful fashion moments viewers are treated to throughout.

Costume designer Mary Zophres recently revealed to Fashionista that Mia's cheerful ensemble in that scene was inspired by Stone herself when she donned a bright Atelier Versace dress on the red carpet for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. "It's stunning on Emma, and I pitched [that color] to [director] Damien for that sequence," Zophres says.

The designer got to work creating a sample of the dress using a polyester fabric from Jo-Ann Fabrics that was the perfect shade—and once Emma tried it on, there was no looking back. "We had our first fitting and Emma started spinning around in this dress," she explains. "She loved it. I loved it. She and I thought at the same time, 'why don't we just use this fabric?" Zophres further customized the dress and had Matisse-inspired florals hand painted throughout for the perfect finishing touch.
