If you’ve known me for a while (or at least have been keeping up with my articles on Who What Wear), this next statement won’t surprise you: The single fashion piece I'd wear for the rest of my life, if I had to choose, would be a dress. And if we want to get ultra-specific, a midi dress. Something about it is just so damn comfortable. Listen, I’m really not the only one who has such a strong affinity toward the garment—fashion people I follow on the 'gram are right there with me. So I reached out to style blogger and fellow dress stan Monroe Steele as I knew she’d have some fresh takes on how to wear my beloved piece for summer. The outfits she came up with? Fire. Plus, the price points she found them at? Unreal. Keep scrolling to see her looks that you can snag from Walmart for under $100 total.
If you follow Steele on social media, you know she’s no amateur when it comes to putting together a good dress 'fit. "I wear dresses all the time for no particular reason. They make me feel good even if I'm just around the house,” Steele tells me. And her favorite type just so happens to be midis. (Sound familiar?) "I love that I can wear them any time of year. In the spring and summer, I can wear them with sandals or heels and, in the fall and winter, with a bootie or over-the-knee boot.”
It doesn't matter what season it is, Steele's styling of this bright yellow midi dress (which, if you didn't notice, has one detail I always appreciate: pockets) is perfect. "The look is effortless without trying too hard," she explains. I'm loving her addition of an oversize raffia tote, which makes the outfit feel on-trend and about five times more expensive, IMO.
As the weeks go by, I've been throwing more and more color into my closet, but I'm still always down for some neutral pieces, so I love that Steele chose this simple black trapeze sundress. She tells me that even though her love for midi dresses is undeniable, she’s not afraid to rule out minis like this one. "I tend to lean toward them more for an event or occasion, but once in a while, I throw a mini into my daily rotation because I have great legs," she says. "This one, in particular, is very flattering but not too heavy, which is crucial when it's 80 degrees outside.”
Her cool platform sandals make the outfit feel stylish and appropriate for just about anything summer-related—be it beach days or iced-coffee runs. "They're very minimal but trendy," says Steele. And to top it off? Another raffia tote, officially proving that this is the It accessory you should 100% take note of for the season ahead.
