When it comes to cultivating style, we’ve long supported the idea that you can do so at any price. Whether you’re on the hunt for an of-the-moment steal or looking to splurge on a timeless investment piece, we believe that great fashion comes at a variety of price tags. To put that notion to the test, we decided to ask women of various income and ages how much they actually spend per month on clothing. Keep reading to see what they had to say!
“I feel like I buy a few things a month, but I buy nice things. My last few purchases were expensive, but I’ll wear them for a while.”
— Megan, 24
“I spend too much. I am too embarrassed to look at my bank account and share.”
— Marissa, 27
“I tend to gravitate toward vintage and thrift-store finds, which fortunately for me aren't as hard on the wallet as most fashion! Occasionally, I'll splurge on a nice jacket or shoes to pair with my steals.”
— Kaitlin, 29
“I spend about $100 a month on clothing over the course of a year. Some months I don't buy anything, and then I can justify a larger purchase the next month. I'm trying to spend less on several fast-fashion purchases and more on fewer, high-quality pieces. Also, on a regular basis I use Crossroads to sell things I'm tired of, and put that money toward my clothing budget.”
— Kate, 30
“I'd say I spend around $250 a month on clothing. I'll snag a few under-$50 items throughout the month so I never feel too guilty, but it does add up!”
— Michelle, 25
“I'm a big shopper, although I tend to be more old-fashioned and shop in person versus online—even though that happens as well! A fair estimation is about $250 to $300 per month. I usually do most of my damage at boutiques and vintage stores as opposed to big department stores. But on the occasion, I'll do Barneys…”
— Lindsay, 28
“I shop frequently, but I usually buy one or two nice things a month. I’d rather have fewer clothes of nicer quality that I love and will last, as opposed to tons of clothes that are cheaply priced and only look good worn once. I also tend to find good items on sale, at places such as Nordstrom Rack.”
— Kelsey, 24
“The amount I spend each month really varies. If I check my bank account and see a pretty good chunk in there, I will drop about $550. But that happens probably every four months or so. It also depends if I happen to find a really cute, need-now piece of clothing. Currently, if I can find work-appropriate clothes that I can also wear for a night out, I’m willing to spend more.”
— Katie, 24
“I don’t spend much on a regular basis, but every few months I’ll splurge a little on myself. It’s usually on an investment piece, such as a suede jacket I’ve been eyeing. I’d consider anything over $300 a splurge.”
— Genevieve, 25
