According to TikTok, These Hairstyles Suit These 9 Necklines Best

If there's one thing I love about TikTok, it's that it gives some brilliant beauty inspiration—especially for hair. Even as a beauty editor, I often find myself in need of some hairstyle ideas, and TikTok always delivers, be it claw-clip hacks or easy hairstyle ideas to try. After scrolling through my For You page recently, I came across creator Thanya and a video of hers that showcases the hairstyles that look best with different necklines. It might be something you only really consider if you're thinking about wedding hair or another special occasion, but it's actually a pretty genius way to decidice which hairstyle works best for your look on any given day.

The Best Hairstyles for Different Necklines

1. High Neck: Ponytail

With high necklines like a roll neck, you want to showcase the elegant silhouette by wearing your hair up, like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley here. A sleek bun or ponytail also works to draw attention to your neckline and elongate the neck. Equally, a top knot or low chignon looks great with a high neckline.

2. Strapless: Hair Down

Wondering how to wear your hair for a strapless dress or top? TikTok says that wearing your hair down is your best bet, helping to bring balance to a strapless neckline. You can keep it more casual by opting for effortless, loose waves like Hailey Bieber has on her bob haircut here, or make it more dressy for evening with glamorous curls on longer hair.

3. Boat Neck: Ponytail

A ponytail perfectly complements a boat neck, highlighting the wide, clean lines of the neckline without it look too stark. I love Charithra Chandran's voluminous ponytail and face-framing tendrils.

4. Sweetheart: Updo

Updos were made for sweetheart necklines. Wearing the hair up and back allows it to showcase and flatter the soft, romantic shape of the neckline. Make like Cass Dimicco and pull a couple of tendrils loose for an effortless vibe.

5. Square Neck: Half Up, Half Down

Much like the boat neckline, you want to create harmony with this bold shape. A half-up-half-down hairstyle is the perfect happy medium in this case, drawing attention to the shape whilst adding softness to the square lines. Bieber shows us how it's done yet again with her style here, finished with a bow.

6. Halterneck: Up-Do

A halterneck has an elongating effect, so it makes sense for the hair to follow suit. Hairdressers are always telling me that an up-do like the one Huntington-Whiteley is wearing here is a little-known trick to make you appear taller, too. As halternecks tend to have a backless element, up-dos are also a winner for flattering this neckline.

7. One Shoulder: Half Up, Half Down

You don't want to have your hair completely down with this style because it would partially hide a one-shoulder neckline. A half-up-half-down style is the ideal middle ground to add balance to this asymmetrical shape. If you do want to wear your hair down, then sweeping it to the opposite side of your one-shoulder neckline is a great workaround.

8. Off-Shoulder: Hair Down

For shoulder-skimming necklines, TikTok reckons you should opt for your hair down. Depending on the length, this could cover the neckline totally if you push your hair forward, which might overpower the shape. If you have longer lengths, sweep them to the back to showcase an off the shoulder top or dress.

9. Crew Neck: Half Up, Half Down

Truthfully? A crew neckline is a clean canvas for any hairstyle. But again, a half-up-half-down hairstyle lends itself well to this casual style for an easy, everyday look.
