Live From the Upper East Side: 3 Cool Outfits I Wouldn't Start the Summer Without

Welcome to Word on the Street, a quarterly series in which one editor takes to the streets of New York City to snap her favorite fashion moments and shop them out just for you.
New York City's Upper East Side is known for its polished townhomes, mansion museums, and impossibly chic residents. Whenever I need a bit of outfit inspiration, I venture out of my Brooklyn neighborhood and straight to Madison Avenue for incredible window-shopping and people-watching. This week's Upper East Side exploration brought me right to my colleague Kristen Nichols's front door. She showed me around her neighborhood while talking all things summer fashion. Her outfits were the quintessential example of polished, put-together ensembles that don't cost an arm and a leg. Here's a spoiler: Each of her summer looks can be shopped at Nordstrom, with most pieces falling under $200. To see the mix of on-trend prints and timeless items she'll be wearing all summer, keep reading.

Which summer trends are you incorporating into your wardrobe?
It's the summer of gingham! We're seeing the timeless print make a comeback, and Nordstrom has a great edit of gingham swimwear, shorts, and more. I'm excited to embrace it for summer. I especially love the print executed in dress form, including this midi dress from Reformation. Paired with leather flats and a tote bag, it's the perfect weekend look for NYC.
How did you put together this look?
A great pair of trousers takes me everywhere from the office to a date night. These crisp white trousers have a high waist and relaxed leg that makes them incredibly comfortable, but they're still tailored and polished. For a base look, I paired them with a great T-shirt, leather belt, strappy heels, and pochette bag. Then, I love to add a French blue button-down for a layering piece.
Which summer outfit formula do you see on repeat in NYC?
Year-round, my go-to outfit formula often begins with jeans and a T-shirt. Then, I'll tweak it for the season. This summer, I'm gravitating toward cropped trench coats, a great layering piece for cooler evenings and transitional weather. Finishing pieces include wayfarer sunglasses and leather accessories, including a '90s bag, a classic belt, and almond-toe flats.
