Editors have the pleasure of attending some really cool events, and last week's adventure was one of my favorites. Senior editor Aniyah Morinia and I headed to Public Records for the Free People x Willow Smith album listening party. It's a hi-fi record bar in Gowanus that draws some of the best-dressed people from all five boroughs. The music is a vibe, the drinks are superb, and the people-watching is a 10 out of 10, so when Free People and Willow Smith teamed up for an intimate listening experience, I had no doubt that it would be an NYC night to remember.
Smith's new album has an ethereal quality, weaving together acoustic rock, jazz, and soulful vocals. The dreamy atmosphere carried over into the fashion—guests embraced Free People's signature bohemian aesthetic, and the looks were a natural extension of the music. Here's what Aniyah had to say about her look and the event:
I'm declaring this the summer of the dainty white top. I may or may not have several variations of this Free People top in my wardrobe (it's the brand's specialty), but when I tap into a trend, I always commit. Because the top is so lacy and delicate, I wanted to add a bit of edgy juxtaposition with these plaid balloon trousers. I like to think of them as chic pajama bottoms. I received endless compliments on social media and IRL when I wore them, so I will be purchasing them in another color. Smith's new album has a nice rock element, so these felt on brand. Everyone at this event looked effortlessly cool. I spotted loose and baggy bottoms paired with fitted tops, chic layering (it's a skill in the summer), lots of fun color-blocking, and matching sets. I found comfort in knowing I could go to the Free People site and re-create these looks.
