It's nearly that time of year when the weather starts to feel all over the place. Mornings are cool and comfortable, afternoons are blistering, and evenings are chilly. When it comes to getting dressed, I'm just as confused as the forecast. If there were ever a time to learn how to transition your wardrobe, it's now. I'll put my hands up and say I'm no expert on the subject, so I've enlisted our fashion director, Michaela Bushkin, to tell us her tips and tricks. She took one of her favorite new arrivals from Nordstrom, a cute Madewell rugby tee, and showed us two different ways to style it. A new season doesn't require a whole new wardrobe. As you'll soon find out, all it takes is a few simple swaps.
What are your go-to tricks for making a summer outfit feel more fall-appropriate?
I'm all about finding great basics, like this striped top, that I can wear throughout various seasons. I can wear it solo, underneath a jacket, or tie it around my waist depending on the season.
What styling swap makes the biggest difference?
Layering makes a huge difference when styling your summer pieces for fall. For example, use a fall sweater as a styling piece tied around your shoulders or waist until it's cool enough to wear it as a top.
What role do shoes, accessories, or outerwear play in transitioning a look?
Often, accessories can easily transition your look from summer to fall. Replace your sandals with knee-high boots or loafers, and the vibe of an outfit completely changes. I wear loafers and sneakers year-round. In summer, I may style them with an anklet and no-show socks and swap to chunky knit socks when the temperature drops.
