3 Activewear Looks Keeping a New Yorker Warm During Her Winter Workouts
Welcome to Word on the Street, a quarterly series in which one editor takes to the streets of New York City to snap her favorite fashion moments and shop them out just for you.
If there is one thing New Yorkers will do, it's power through the cold to maintain their winter workout routine. I've seen runners wear shorts in 20ºF weather, and Pilates princesses shed 15 layers of clothing as they enter the studio. Hibernation is not an option for committed fitness lovers, and that's something our editor Anna LaPlaca knows well. Coming off her first NYC marathon, I knew she would be the perfect person to go to for winter activewear recommendations. Instead of asking her to send links, I followed her around the city last week to see how she moves in style. Her looks—which are all from FP Movement—give that signature New York fashion girl look, while being functional for runs, yoga, Pilates, and more. If you're in the market for winter workout gear that feels fashion-forward, we've got you covered.
Tell me about your workout routine in the winter. How are you staying warm to and from the gym or studio?
Anna LaPlaca: Creating an interesting workout look in the winter is all about layers. I love the Tempo Ruched Long Sleeve because it's thin, stretchy, and makes you look so snatched. Here, instead of wearing it as a top, I styled it as a bolero so I could still show off my tank, and I love the way it picks up the brown in the top. It's definitely a styling trick I'll be using to look cute at all my Pilates and yoga classes.
A little birdy told me you just did your first marathon. How are you keeping up your training?
AL: Obviously, I was running a lot this year, more than I ever have before, to get ready for my marathon. Now that I'm on the other side of my training block, I'm easing back into a more relaxed running routine, and one thing that definitely gets me out the door, especially in the colder months, is a cute outfit. I already know this cinch-waist jacket will be my running partner all winter—it's warm without feeling bulky and gives me that little bit of waist-defining shape to feel cute jogging up and down the West Side Highway.
For New Yorkers, daily movement doesn't always include a gym. So, where are you wearing this last look?
AL: My calendar for the next few months is stacked with fun travel plans. Between heading home for the holidays and heading out West to go skiing, I'll be spending a lot of time on planes for the remainder of 2025, and this last look is what I plan to wear when heading to the airport. It's a matching set, so I automatically feel way more put-together than I would in plain leggings and a hoodie. I popped a fleece vest on top as an extra cozy layer, but the set looks just as good with or without an outerwear moment, which is key because I'm always taking my layers on and off whenever I travel.
