5 Women Tested Amazon’s Famous $12 Leggings: Read the Honest Pros and Cons

Amazon has a very special $12 pair of leggings that our commerce specialist constantly tells us is trending as a hot buy. The high-waisted leggings are one size fits all, come in 25 colors, boast a #1 best seller badge, and have over 3,000 reviews averaging at 4.5/5 stars. Naturally, we decided to see what all the fuss was about by trying them ourselves. Too good to be true? We’ll be the judge of that. We had all five editors in our Los Angeles office test the same pair, a sisterhood of the traveling leggings situation, if you will. We all have different body shapes and heights, and are happy to report back that they curiously did fit us all. Read on to see our reviews, along with some pictures I snapped in the Who What Wear closet of how I styled them two ways.

My first thought upon slipping on the leggings, "whoah these are soft." Fantasies of spending all day in bed lounging in these lovelies quickly crossed my mind. I'm 5'4'' and the length was fine for me, just a little extra fabric around the ankles, but that's normal for most leggings I try. For travel, these pants would be straight up perfect.

Next, I tried an athletic look, just in case I actually wanted to work out in these workout pants. I would absolutely wear them for a long walk or a hike (hikes for me are usually not intensely active pursuits, like a few miles long nature walk that's sometimes uphill). But in cases where you need a true performance legging, these don't cut the mustard. They also don't exactly slim your figure either, as the compression effect of a lot of leggings is missing.

Excuse my belly-button, but I wanted to show you exactly how high-waisted the leggings are. The rise definitely helps hold you in and feel covered, but they aren't crazy high-waisted.

Read on to see what the other four editors had to say.

"As soon as I tried on these leggings I was overwhelmed by how soft they were. You know how soft and cozy the inside of your favorite sweatpants are? That level of soft. I put them on to clean my apartment, pack, and do other random chores and the whole time the thin material made them feel light as air—certainly a far cry from the constricting feel I sometimes get with my other pairs. I'd say for lounging, these are a total winner. However, I wouldn't wear them to workout since the sweatpant-like material was hardly made for exercise." — Anna LaPlaca, Assistant Editor

“For me, leggings are separated into two camps: sculpting ones that suck you in and are extra-flattering, and ones you wear strictly for comfort. These leggings definitely fall into the latter category, as they are very soft and stretchy but I didn't think they were particularly doing me any favors when it comes to looking flattering. Plus, I haven't worked out in them yet, but I'm not sure they'd be the best at wicking sweat like performance leggings are, so I might stick to other leggings for workouts. At the end of the day, I think the soft material and great price are the main selling points for these. Also, I'm 5'10" and the leggings landed above my ankle—I think they worked well for my height since I like having a mix of cropped and full-length styles." — Erin Fitzpatrick, Senior News Editor

“I was pleasantly surprised to discover just how comfortable these leggings were. I don’t think I’ve ever slipped into anything softer, unless we’re counting pajamas. My only hesitation with them? They don’t have the sculpting effect like other leggings I own.” — Kristen Nichols, Associate Editor

“They’re great for an athleisure look for lounging or running errands, but not the best option if you’re looking for performance leggings, because the material, although very soft, doesn’t hold you in like typical athletic wear.” — Michelle Scanga, Managing Editor
