Chung reliably nails it, whether she is navigating the crowds at Glastonbury Music Festival or sitting front row at a Chanel fashion show. So, as much of the country heads into another polar vortex, we bring you nine of her tried-and-true cold weather stalwarts to get you through the continued chill in style.
Alexa Chung's 9 Winter Style Essentials
- 1 of 19
Try one of these each day and¬—fingers crossed—the mercury will have risen to a tolerable level by day 10.

Day 1: 60s A-Line Coat:
The A-line silhouette is Chung’s mainstay, but we particularly love the swingy pea-coat versions that she dons during the colder months (worn here with a Burberry Mini Crush Clutch ($995) in black). Whether they are printed, collarless or in a bold color, they add a girlish charm to an otherwise basic outfit.

Day 1: Try wearing:
Club Monaco Laurant Wool Coat ($389)

Day 2: Top Handle Bag:
The top handle bag has been enjoying a runway resurgence for a few seasons now, thanks to everyone from Phillip Lim to Prada. Always on trend, Chung has been seen adopting the style in a variety of colors and sizes, for example this Dolce and Gabanna Agata Bag ($2295). We think it’s a fun alternative to the ubiquitous crossbody bag, particularly in a ladylike, mini size.

Day 3: Leather Mini Skirt:
Sex up your chunky sweater, printed sweatshirt or cashmere turtleneck by pairing it with a sleek, leather mini skirt. As shown here on Chung with her Bella Freud Jumper ($398) it looks undeniably chic with tights and flats, and is a lot warmer than a regular skirt.

Day 3: Try wearing:
Missguided Tarquara Faux Leather Zip Detail Mini Skirt ($33) in Burgundy

Day 4: Chelsea Boots:
These flat, slip-on boots are ideal for traveling—whether through an airport or along an icy sidewalk—and they only look better with age. Wear in lieu of your western ankle boot and throw on some sunglasses, like Chung’s Karen Walker Northen Lights ($250) in Crazy Tortoise.

Day 5: Trench Coat:
If you don’t own one by now this should persuade you: a trench will instantly add a classic flair to any outfit, will look equally great layered under a thicker coat or over a leather jacket, and makes a great topper for your sundresses in early spring. If only we could all own the Burberry London Gabardine Trench ($1870) that Chung is wearing here.

Day 5: Try Wearing:
London Fog All Weather Hooded Trench Coat ($180) in Khaki

Day 6: Polka Dots
We’ve all worn our fair share of leopard prints and bateau stripes, its time to switch over to playful polka dots, like these pearl ones on Chung’s Chanel S/S 13 frock. They look equally appropriate on a silk blouse or a strapless cocktail dress.

Day 6: Try Wearing:
Mango Polka Dot Sweater ($50) in Black
- 14 of 19
Day 7: Crisp White Shirt:
The white shirt is the closet staple that is worth its weight in gold. Layer it under a long sleeved mini-dress or a sharp menswear suit like Chung’s Stella McCartney P/F 12 version.

Day 7: Try Wearing:
Merona Women’s Faborite Solid Shirt ($23) in Fresh White
- 16 of 19
Day 8: Gray Cardigan:
A thick, gray cardigan looks softer than traditional black, and adds a louche factor to printed pants (like Chung’s J.W. Anderson Paisley Pants ($130)) or mom jeans when worn buttoned-up as a top.

Day 8: Try Wearing:
Comme Des Garcons Play Classic Cardigan ($461) in Grey

Day 9: Matte Red Lip
Day 9: Matte Red Lip: When piling on the layers in basic colors like navy, black and gray, it never hurts to add a pop of red to warm up your outfit. We favor the strong, matte red lip that Alexa frequently steps out in.

Day 9: Try Wearing:
Nars Matte Lip Pencil ($25) in Dragon Girl
