I'm a Coat Obsessive—These Are the 7 Styles Zara Is Doing So Well Right Now
When it comes to high-street brands, editors, influencers and celebrities will agree on one thing: No one can resist the allure of Zara. Over the last decade, the Spanish titan has truly taken the fashion world by storm, serving up everything from incredible collabs—this summer alone we’ve seen collections from Kate Moss and Narciso Rodriguez—to timeless basics and cult buys as well as a mass of amazing accessories, proving it’s a one-stop shop for everything the fashion set could ever need.
For me, there is one thing that Zara does particularly well, and that’s outerwear. Providing us with a mixture of style, fabric, colour and fit, each season, the brand ensures there’s something for everyone in its large and varied coat collection. As a self-confessed coat obsessive, as well as an utter Zara lover, I feel fully qualified to report on this matter. Whenever the time comes for me to sell on or donate my coat and invest in a new style I will love just as much, I always head to Zara first. Continuously impressive, affordable yet good-quality, it ticks every one of my metaphorical boxes. This year, as ever, there’s plenty to choose from, including trendy bombers, simple wool styles and cosy shearling numbers.
Keep scrolling to discover the coat trends and styles Zara is nailing this autumn, as well as my edit of the best on site right now.
1. BOMBERS
Okay, so these aren't technically coats, but Zara is nailing the bomber-jacket trend this season, so I had to include them. After being spotted on the A/W 22 runways (thank you, Givenchy and Prada) as well as the street style runway in every city from London to New York, it’s clear that this is the year that bombers are back. Thankfully, Zara has plenty to choose from including oversized, longline styles and cropped, wool iterations. Wear yours with jeans and knitwear or layer over a dress to give it a bit of edge.
Shop the look:
Add this oversized bomber to leather trousers, a sweatshirt and heeled boots look for a cool twist.
This all-black style is part of the brand's limited-edition collection. Size up to get that relaxed feel.
2. TRENCHES
Mark my words: A trench coat will never go out of style. Zara does these particularly well, and thanks to their evergreen popularity, there is always a peppering of them on the brand’s new-in page. This year, along with the classics, the brand has released some party-ready satin and leather styles in addition to oversized cuts and trenches with trendy maxi-hem details.
Shop the look:
The best of the best. This classic double-breasted style will work hard in your wardrobe year-round.
This chic trench will look so stylish worn over an all-black look or in the evenings.
I'm obsessed with this satin style. I'll be wearing mine over sequins come party season.
Be bold and opt for this leather iteration, a contemporary twist on the classic.
3. DOUBLE-BREASTED
A double-breasted coat is such a classic and will work hard in your wardrobe year after year. It might not be as trend-led as other coats, but if you're looking to invest in a timeless shape that will work with multiple looks, this is it. Right now, Zara has multiple black or off-white styles to choose from, as well as a showstopping fuchsia number that nods to this season's Barbiecore trend.
Shop the look:
How amazing will this look over leather and knitwear? A tailored cut ensures it's flattering, too.
A white coat will work just as well in winter as it will heading into spring. Wear with party dresses, jeans and more.
4. PUFFERS
Once winter hits you can't go wrong with a cosy puffer coat, and Zara's selection features everything from practical hooded styles to neat cropped numbers. Go for classic khaki or black, or be brave and opt for chic all-white or frosty baby blue, which are just as versatile.
Shop the look:
Practical and stylish, this khaki number promises to be a winter wardrobe hero.
A chicer version of a puffer, this belted style feels so much more expensive than it is.
I love a blue coat for something a bit different. How great will this look with denim?
5. WOOLLEN
Another style Zara always gets right is the simple wool coat. These look effortlessly stylish worn over jeans, a knit and ankle boots but can also add a smart touch to comfy winter outfits made up of leggings or sweatpants. Plus, they also work with dresses and workwear. Thankfully, Zara has plenty to choose from already, including chic belted styles or straight-cut tailored versions.
Shop the look:
I love the relaxed shape of this wool style. Leave the belt loose, or use it to cinch in your waist.
This is one of my favourites on the Zara site right now. With a slight bouclé fabrication, it looks far more expensive than its £119 price tag.
6. FAUX SHEARLING
Shearling is having a moment, as proven by Loewe's, Etro's and JW Anderson's A/W 22 collections, to name a few. Cool, classic and cosy, pair this style of outerwear with denim or layer over cashmere knits and midi skirts. This season, Zara is tapping into the trend with everything from full-on fluffy aviator-style jackets to simple faux-shearling details.
Shop the look:
I'll be styling this short shearling number with a floral midi dress and chunky boots.
Zara brings this style out year after year, and for good reason. Go a size up if you'd rather wear it more relaxed than neat.
I love the black leather and cosy shearling detailing on this faux-suede style.
7. LEATHER
The biker trend is back for autumn 2022 with designers such as Chloé and Prada putting contemporary twists on the leather classics. Opt for an oversized jacket that can be layered over knitwear and tailoring or choose a Parisian-inspired, moto-style cropped version completed with statement buttons.
Shop the look:
Take cues from the brand itself, and wear this jacket over a white T-shirt and denim shirt.
How chic is this white iteration? Wear with grey and oatmeal for a really smart take.

Poppy joined the Who What Wear UK team as managing editor in 2022. After graduating from university with a degree in English literature, she worked for a number of print and digital publications, including Women's Health, The Times, Hello! and Marie Claire. In these roles she assisted the fashion teams with print content as well as digital shopping features, shoots and celebrity news.
Prior to Who What Wear, Poppy worked at SheerLuxe as the commercial content manager. There she oversaw all paid-for site content and inclusions, managed the visual assets and briefs for branded content, and ensured all content—whether editorial or commercial—was in line with overall brand guidelines and tone. She also supported the editorial team by looking after visual merchandising on site and reviewing the brand’s daily newsletters.
As WWW UK’s managing editor, Poppy spends most of her time looking after the content calendar and all output across the brand, in addition to working with contributors, supporting with social media planning, assisting with branded content and contributing to brand strategy. Poppy prides herself on being organised, and a keen eye for detail means she oversees the production of tentpole moments such as Who What Wear’s quarterly celebrity covers, the Wedding Issue, team shoots, events, industry-facing moments, gift guides and more. In addition to this, Poppy ensures processes across the brand are efficient and effective, and is always on the lookout for ways the team can work smarter, not harder! As someone who works behind the scenes (Poppy loves a spreadsheet!), you won’t find many articles by Poppy on site, but when you do there’s no doubt they will either be focused on dresses, handbags or classic high-street buys. Or better yet, all three!
Born and raised in London, Poppy is a true city girl. When she's not thinking about clothes (or raiding her mum’s wardrobe), Poppy fills her time walking along the river with her 11-year-old labradoodle, getting stuck in a good book and enjoying as many of the city’s amazing restaurants and bars as her purse will allow! Her favourite London spots are Caravel for dinner, the Ham Yard Hotel for a fancy pre-theatre drink, Daunt Books for a new read, 26Grains for breakfast and Coal Drop's Yard for a spot of shopping.
