We caught up with the honoree in New York City to talk fashion hacks, her favorite fall trends, and the retailers she swears by.
Who What Wear: Who has been the most influential person in your fashion career?
Olivia Palermo: My mother and aunt are huge influences. The have such great style and grace.
WWW: What keeps you motivated working in this industry?
OP: The passion that I have for everything I do! I’m inspired daily in the environment and the people I work with every day!
WWW: You’ve collaborated on shoes, jewelry, and sunglasses. What would you like to do next?
OP: I’m happy that for the next year I’ll be designing for Chelsea28, Nordstrom’s in-house line. I am very excited to be working with apparel.
WWW: Do you have any fashion rules that you live by?
OP: Not really. I just like to feel comfortable in what I wear. So fit is very important, which is why I always say everyone should have a tailor.
WWW: What's the best styling trick you've learned over the years?
OP: Double-sided tape is a lifesaver. It can do anything from fixing a missing button on the sleeve of a jacket to ensuring you don’t overexpose yourself in a plunging neckline.
WWW: Do you ever do any DIY hacks to make an outfit perfect?
OP: Adding a belt or scarves can really elevate a look. People don’t use those enough.
WWW: You’re a pro when it comes to a belted look: What are your secrets?
OP: Invest in a collection of different shapes, textures, and colors. It helps when you have options.
WWW: What jewelry trends are you particularly into right now?
OP: I love everything in my BaubleBar collection! I always travel with statement cuffs and clips! They can always add a little something to an outfit.
WWW: Do you have any dos and don’ts when it comes to accessorizing?
OP: Don’t overdo it. If you are just looking for things to add to an already accessorized look, you’re doing too much.
WWW: Who do you turn to for fashion inspiration?
OP: For fashion inspiration, I truly look to all the stylish women I see through my travels all over the world. Depending on where I am visiting, I always see new ways to style myself.
WWW: What fall trends are you loving right now? Which ones are you looking to retire?
OP: I love suede coats at the moment! A camel trench is always great. I really would like to see the end of the crop top, only because it’s getting cold now.
WWW: As someone who’s always on the go, do you have any tricks for looking polished in a pinch?
OP: I like to keep wet wipes handy, and a mini baby powder and brush in my bag to touch up my hair.
WWW: Where are your favorite places to shop in New York? Do you have any beloved under-the-radar boutiques or stores?
OP: Moncler, Smythson, and Zoe in DUMBO. Sadly, [smaller] boutiques don’t really exist in NYC anymore. Retail spaces are just too expensive, unless you are a big brand.
WWW: What’s your favorite fast-fashion/low-priced retailer?
OP: Zara is a longtime favorite, as well as Topshop and Reiss.
