I Live in L.A.; 7 Pieces I'm Buying to Create My Summer Uniform

Summer is upon us, and I’ll be the first to say I’m ready for its return. For this L.A. based writer, the longer days and shorter evenings are all about meals al fresco, sunset drinks with friends, a lot of time outdoors and many, many beach days. Warmer weather also means it’s time to hang up my heavier knits and jackets (ok, I know what you’re thinking, but it’s been cold in L.A. this year!) in favor of versatile pieces that can keep up with my on-the-go attitude. Hence, putting together a summer capsule wardrobe is key.

One of the best things about living in L.A. is its proximity to nature - you can get to the mountains, the beach or the desert in under two hours. Since I’m prone to a spontaneous road trip, I like to have easy-going items on hand during the summer that can work for both browsing downtown main street and grabbing a fabulous dinner afterward. When I’m in the city, well, L.A.’s a place to see and be seen, and this season I’m partial to elevated lounge-wear and statement pieces like a boldly-patterned dress because, if summer’s not the time to infuse a little color into your wardrobe, when is?

To check out all the pieces I’m adding to my cart to create my L.A. summer uniform, take a gander below. While they may be specific to the west coast, I’m confident they’ll become your summer essentials no matter where you live.

Romantic White Top

An ode to 70’s California style, a romantic white blouse is a summer basic in my book.

Bold-Patterned Dress

Nothing says fun in the sun quite like a bold-patterned dress in a bright hue While it’s perfect for a beach vacation, it’ll also be my go-to for festive dinners with friends.

Long White Skirt

I don’t know about you, but my feed is filled with white maxi skirts right now. Never one to pick favorites, I like both the bohemian and streamlined takes.

Pale Yellow Button-Up

Frann Fyne wears a light yellow button up, Celine bag, black column skirt and clogs.

Is it just me, or is pale yellow the unsung color of summer? It’s so easy to wear it’s practically a neutral and a button-down in this shade makes for an easy day-to-day choice. It also makes a chic beach coverup.

Textured One Piece Swimsuit

Marianne Smyth wears a Hunza G swimsuit, denim shorts and a white button up.

A textured one piece swimsuit looks divine when worn as a top with shorts underneath a button down. This tried and true combo is one I’ve donned many times before and I don’t plan on retiring it anytime soon.

Sporty Shorts

While I’ve always been a denim cutoffs kinda gal, I’m switching things up this season with some athletic-inspired shorts. When paired with an oversized oxford and ballet flats, they’re the epitome of laid-back cool.

Mesh Shoes

Love them or hate them, mesh shoes are my footwear of choice this summer. My most on-trend pick, they're sure to add interest to any outfit.
