I Know You're Stylish If You Carry One of These Elegant Items in Your Handbag
There are a few things people assume when I tell them I'm a fashion editor. One, that I have a rail of couture gowns in my flat; two, that I'm whisked off to Paris every other Thursday for "work"; and three, that my wardrobe is the size of an actual shop floor. Most of this is, of course, untrue. The reality is far more practical, but there are a few telltale "fashion editor" things I do.
Case in point: I always notice the people who look like they've thought about every single detail of their outfit; the ones whose accessories are so considered that they extend beyond the obvious. Not just the bag, but the notebook inside it. Not just the wallet, but the keyring attached to it. There's something about a person who carries elegant, functional and slightly unexpected accessories that suggests they've got their life—and their style—together. These are the little pieces that, quite literally, get carried with you everywhere, and they can quietly transform even the simplest outfit.
I've long had a soft spot for Smythson, though "soft spot" feels like an understatement considering I've carried a Smythson Soho Diary for as long as I can remember. In my job, deadlines arrive with the same speed as fashion trends, and there's something about physically writing things down that helps me keep it all straight. My diary is as much a part of my daily uniform as my go-to trench coat. The leather softens beautifully over time, the paper is smooth without being slippery and it just feels satisfying to use. Plus, I'll admit, there's a quiet joy in knowing that when I pull it out of my bag at a meeting, it looks just as sharp as the rest of my outfit.
Smythson has that knack for crafting practical pieces—bags, card holders, even trinket cases—that don't just serve a purpose but feel like an extension of your style.
This season, I'm eyeing up a few new additions that will fit seamlessly with what I already own. Animal print has been making its way back into the conversation (if my Instagram Saved folder is anything to go by), and Smythson's new leopard pieces are an understated way to nod to the trend without going full-on statement coat. The Medium Square Trinket Case in Panama Leopard is perfect for keeping jewellery secure when travelling, but I can also see it doubling as an on-desk catch-all.
Then there's the Black Milton Crossbody and Shoulder Bags, which have that refined structure that works with pretty much every outfit I wear: tailored trousers, denim or even my favourite oversized knit. And because I know these are investment pieces, I like that they'll work with my existing Smythson accessories, making them feel less like seasonal splurges and more like future-proof buys.
Below, I've rounded up my favourite Smythson pieces right now. Some are instant staples, others are more trend-led, but all are guaranteed to elevate whatever you’re carrying them in.
