These Fashion Girl–Approved Picks From Walmart Prove That Elevated Basics Define the Outfit
I've only recently become a New Yorker, so I'm still in awe of the street style, even after a year. I always assumed women in fur coats and sky-high heels would be the ones catching my eye, but I'm actually finding myself drawn toward those who look naturally chic. While their styles vary, they all have one thing in common: effortlessly cool denim. Spring is officially underway, and what better time to refresh my jean collection than during a seasonal reset? I asked our fashion director, Michaela Bushkin, for help, and she suggested I start at Walmart.
I Want Jeans That Are Fashionable and Functional—Where Should I Look?
Our fashion editor let us in on a little secret: Denim that's trendy, but doesn't fit properly, is no use to your wardrobe. Denim is highly personal—from fit to silhouette to price point, you must be clear on your needs and wants. That's why she loves how Walmart blends chic styles with a wide variety of sizes (including petite and plus), materials (including 100% cotton), and silhouettes (over 1000 pairs!), so you can find the best look for you.
What If I Want to Lean Into Spring's Top Trends?
Now that we've covered function, we can move on to the fun part: fashion. For spring, Michaela tells me barrel-leg denim, personality-filled pieces, and wide-leg jeans are trending.
"Trendy denim is an easy way to refresh your everyday looks for spring," she notes. "Style barrel-leg or wide-leg jeans with other elevated basics for a modern, yet classic look. It doesn't have to be expensive either—Walmart's selection of denim styles makes it easy to stay on trend."
Are These Styles Versatile Enough to Mix and Match With My Wardrobe?
And because practicality is also important, I asked Michaela if these denim looks would truly add versatility to my closet.
"The concept that truly fashionable people are only seen in dramatic looks is false," says our fashion editor. "Elevated basics that feature a cool design detail or a pop of personality are the true outfit makers. You can wear them with a white tee, a simple button-up, a black tank top—the list goes on. The goal of elevated basics is to take an outfit to the next level."
And because I want these styles to last, Michaela notes that she loves how the construction and design of Walmart's denim options make them look expensive without breaking the bank.
