This Is What a Fashion Editor Wore, Did, and Saw at the New York Sail Grand Prix
Just when you think New York City can't get any more exhilarating, fast-paced, intense, and chaotic, the city welcomes SailGP's Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix. In case you missed it, the fastest boats in the world took over the New York Harbor from May 30–31, and we're still not over it. Picture 12 elite international teams competing on 50-foot, hydrofoiling catamarans, flying across the water at speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour, all against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. Talk about a high-speed race!
At the intersection of fashion and sports, our associate features editor Ana Escalante set sail with Amazon Fashion to cheer on Team USA in style. Amazon is an official sponsor and retail partner of the U.S. SailGP Team, and to celebrate this year's grand prix, they invited Ana to join for a full day on the water and learn about the amazing athletes transforming the world of sailing today. Not only did she board the yacht in head-to-toe Amazon Fashion, but she got to enjoy the full SailGP experience, complete with celebrity sightings, fun activations, chic outfits, and so much more.
Athletes have become some of the most influential voices in fashion, setting trends that extend far beyond the locker room. Whether you're cheering on your favorite team, training for a specific sport, or simply looking for styles inspired by the athletes you love, Amazon makes it easy to discover it all in one place. Keep scrolling for everything Ana wore, did, and saw at the city's most exciting racing event. Spoiler alert: You may want to start looking at ticket options for next year's race.
"I wore a beautiful one-shoulder asymmetrical sundress from ALC in a striped pattern with pops of brown, blush, and apricot. Just as important as the dress, though, are the accessories. I added two of my favorite American brands, Tory Burch and Coach, to the mix with a pair of classic, summery Miller Flip-Flops and an oversize Romy tote from Tory Burch, and some metal-forward sunglasses from Coach—as well as my Supergoop! sunscreen and a water bottle. I finished off the look by adding a gold chain waist belt and my favorite everyday jewelry." — Ana Escalante
"On Amazon Fashion's boat, there were dozens of activities to keep us busy while we waited for the race to begin. The deck felt like a floating summer fashion playground, with interactive activations at every turn. My favorite was the custom embroidery station with Lands' End tote bags and Tommy Hilfiger hats (two brands available on Amazon) that guests could personalize with their initials and unique summery and nautical designs. I immediately added my initials to a tote bag and created a custom charm to add to my bag, which was a perfect keepsake from the day. The Supergoop! sunscreen pop-up was stocked with warm-weather essentials like spray-on sunscreen mist and the brand's beloved Superglow! formulas. There was also a curated, shoppable Amazon Fashion assortment that highlighted some of the season's biggest trends and beloved brands like Rebecca Taylor, Michael Kors, Tropic of C, Calzedonia, Heaven Mayhem, and Dezi. Between browsing, customizing, and snapping photos with friends, there was never a dull moment. We enjoyed delicious food and drinks aboard the Norma Jean yacht while taking in incredible waterfront views, making the time before the race fly by." — Escalante
"There's nothing quite like sailing on the Hudson while lounging on a big yacht. Not only was the people-watching incredible, but honestly, I was there for the fashion. Guests leaned into the preppy, nautical vibe with their styling and garment choices for the SailGP, opting for red, white, and blue sweaters (often draped around their shoulders), many from the Tommy Hilfiger x U.S. SailGP Team fanwear collection, breathable summer dresses, oversize sunglasses, and straw bucket hats—some of my favorite summer trends that you can find on Fashion. Once the competition started, all eyes were on the water. The race itself was incredibly exciting, fast-paced, high-energy, and packed with adrenaline from start to finish. Watching the teams maneuver across the water at such impressive speeds was thrilling, and the crowd of tastemakers gathered on the boat was fully invested in cheering them on. Of course, I was rooting for Team USA. The atmosphere felt electric as everyone gathered along the rails towards the back lounge to watch the action unfold. After the race wrapped up, the clouds parted, and the weather was beautiful, giving us the perfect opportunity to enjoy a leisurely sail along the Hudson River. The afternoon ended with a DJ set, warm chocolate chip cookies, and unbeatable skyline views—a dream summer day." — Escalante
"There were dozens of notable FYP figures in attendance, including viral content creators and some of the stars of my favorite Amazon Prime Video series. Notable NYC-favorite guests included Tayshia Adams, Tinx, Tell Me Lies star Alicia Crowder, and Summer House stars Kyle Cooke, Levi Sebree, and Bailey Taylor." — Escalante
