Italian Beauty Is Having a Major Moment—My Favorite Products That Scream Bellissima
From Milan to Rome.
With its timeless charm and unparalleled elegance, Italian beauty has emerged as one of the internet's biggest fixations when it comes to beauty inspiration. From the shores of the Amalfi Coast to the vistas of Tuscany, Italy captivates with its diverse cultural richness and the effortless style and influence of its people.
"Italy is the biggest global producer of cosmetic products," states Italian beauty expert Jenna Curcio, who heads up marketing and press for Espressoh, one of our favorite brands from the country. "U.S. brands often want their makeup products produced in Italy because the 'Made in Italy' label is extremely sought-after due to its association with quality." We asked her why this part of the world's mark on beauty is so significant. "Italian beauty can be defined pretty succinctly: It's simple yet bold," Curcio answers. "Italians love to keep their everyday routine pretty basic, but they'll add a touch of creativity or boldness. Whether that's through a red lipstick or a fun eye shadow or highlighter, they tend to focus on one area at a time. Their base routine is usually kept very simple. Although, this differs from region to region."
"Dating back to Ancient Rome, women in Italy wore makeup on a regular basis," Curcio reminds me. "These performed acts of femininity have obviously evolved over the centuries but are still prevalent in today's culture." She tells me that the use of natural ingredients from the Italian landscape is something that has also withstood the test of time. In Italy, Curcio explains that beauty has always held some level of sociopolitical context in one way or another. Makeup plays a huge part in the perception of women (or anyone who wears makeup) in today's Italian culture.
Whether you want to look like Sophia Loren, with her bold, black eyeliner, or an It girl from Rome, Italian beauty continues to inspire the way we create our current beauty looks. Below, I'm sharing 24 beauty products to help you create a look that screams bellisima. Keep scrolling!

Italian makeup artist Vania Tommasi is quick to recommend Italian beauty brand Nabla when rattling off her favorite makeup products. She credits the brand's creative products, high-performance formulas, and natural finishes for its exceptionality. "I love especially the lip products," she gushes. Tommasi recommends this lip liner in particular, which comes in 12 long-wear, transfer-resistant shades.
Tommasi also lists Kiko Milano as one of the Italian makeup brands worth adding to your collection. "[It's] good quality for the price," she remarks. While she praises the brand's "comfortable and long-lasting" lip liners and lip tints, she specifically singles out this liquid lipstick. Her favorite shade, 103 (a rosy nude), is a pigment-packed, glossy formula that wraps the lips in high-impact color and up to 16-hour wear.
Another one of Tommasi's recommendations is this brush kit from Nabla. It boasts eight complexion, eye, and eyebrow products made with synthetic bristles for easy and smooth application, making smooth blends a breeze. Beautiful makeup is half product, half technique, and this set can transform your beauty regimen with one single purchase.
Another must in Tommasi's collection is the Viper Lip Pumper, which she calls a "must-have" in her professional and personal kit. The noticeably plumping serum spikes the lips with caffeine, ginger, and peptides while also nourishing the thin skin with antioxidants like vitamin B3 for a noticeable but comfortable plumping experience.
Fragrance
The newest (and freshest) scent of the bunch is Bulgari's Eau Parfumée Thé Impérial, a stunning citrus fragrance that twists the tartness of Italian fruit with Sri Lankan black tea. Though an eau de toilette, this light and refreshing scent has impressive staying power—shifting on your skin from a clean, fresh scent into something a bit more dimensional as it tangles with your natural aroma. The perfect summer scent, if you ask Who What Wear editors.
Prada's Paradoxe Intense is one of the most popular fragrances on the market today, not only for its stunning olfactory composition but also for its alluring depth. From New York to Milan, beauty lovers swear by this scent for its attractive powers (no date can resist its sensual cocktail of jasmine and amber), and it lasts for an extended amount of time, offering up to eight hours of noticeable wear.
One of Italian perfumery Acqua di Parma's most popular fragrances in Colonia, a splashy blend of Calabrian bergamot, lavender, orange, and warm woods. The scent is inviting and adventurous, just like the Italian coastline, and serves well as a summertime scent or vacation fragrance.
With hints of sea breeze and lemon, this aquatic scent smells like the soundtrack of summer. Its citrus-floral composition, spiced with musky cedarwood and sweet jasmine, sparks images of historic villas along the coast of Lake Como. It strikes the perfect balance between femininity and masculinity, forming a stunning fragrance that works on everyone anywhere all summer long (especially if that somewhere happens to be the Italian Riviera).
Versace is one of Italy's most renowned fashion houses, which is why it's no surprise that Bright Crystal is one if the brand's best-selling fragrances. This stunning eau de toilette showers the wearer in a haze of peonies, bright yuzu, and sharp lemon before musk strings everything together with a warm depth. It smells like limousines in Milan, slinky slip dresses in Florence, and yellow umbrellas in Amalfi.
While most of these popular Italian scents lean on the bright and citrusy side, this alluring elixir from Valentino is a breath of fresh—read: sexy, deep, and floral, in a flower-petals-on-the-bed kind of way. Jasmine and bourbon vanilla tangle in a climactic dance, circling the wearer in a sheer, gauzy swirl. Plus, it lasts for hours—offering the same kind of day-to-night stamina that the Italian woman needs from her beauty routine.

How to Emulate Italian Beauty
"In my opinion, the 'Italian touch' is not so much about a single technique as it is about a philosophy: looking [good] without appearing overdone," says Tommasi. "The goal is to enhance what is already there rather than transform it." Her tips? Focus on your skin and personalize your makeup routine—try not to follow trends (unless you want to).
- Put skin first: "Healthy and radiant skin is valued more than heavy coverage," says Tommasi. Italians keep things simple, she says—moisturizer and SPF are usually all you need. When it comes to makeup, the desired result is a natural, your-skin-but-better finish. "A diet with real and natural foods, water, and exercise also plays an important role in this," she adds.
- Personalize your routine: "Italian makeup is designed to highlight a person’s best features," says Tommasi. She explains that most Italian women want a simple look that can transition from day to night with little fuss. "For every day, Italian women wear lightweight foundations or skin tints, just a touch of blush and contouring, [and] no dramatic contouring," she explains. For "Italian" eyes, swipe a thin line of eyeliner or smudge out your eyeliner for a whisper of smoke. Brush your brows with gel to keep them looking natural, and reach for a rosy or nude lip liner with gloss. "And a touch of fresh and elegant perfume to complete the look," she finishes.
