I’ve had acne for most of my life. It first developed when I was a teenager and, despite trying seemingly endless products and routines throughout my twenties, it persisted well into adulthood. Acne is rarely as straightforward as “spot appears, apply spot treatment, spot disappears.” Different types of breakouts need different approaches, and even the same spot can respond differently depending on where it is in its lifecycle. What might help calm a new, inflamed blemish isn’t necessarily what I’d reach for when a whitehead has come to a head, or when a spot is sore, swollen and stubbornly sitting beneath the skin.

Some ingredients are brilliant at reducing inflammation, others help clear congestion, whilst others can support the skin’s barrier when you’ve inevitably gone a little too hard trying to make a breakout disappear overnight. And sometimes, the best treatment is knowing when to leave a spot alone.

1. Dr. Sam's Neutralising Gel
Works best for: Early-stage inflamed spots, clogged pores, and the lingering redness left behind once a breakout has gone down
This multitasking formula combines azelaic acid, salicylic acid, and bakuchiol, making it a great multitasker. Salicylic acid helps clear congestion within the pore, while azelaic acid calms inflammation and redness and helps to minimise the appearance of post-breakout marks, and bakuchiol reduces inflammation. I also like that it's available both as a spot-on treatment and as a roll-on serum—ideal if your breakouts are widespread. It's effective but feels gentle and barrier-friendly, and never dries out the skin surrounding a spot.

Spot patches aren't just a clever way to stop yourself from picking—hydrocolloid creates a protective seal over the blemish and absorbs fluid from the spot, helping to flatten it while shielding it from your fingers, makeup, and other external irritants. I find these ones especially effective because they take that basic concept and add salicylic acid to help unclog the pore, succinic acid to help reduce the appearance of redness and excess oil, and ectoin to soothe and support hydration. They're also impressively thin and matte, so unlike some patches, they really lock in place and look totally invisible.

There’s a reason why benzoyl peroxide has remained such a mainstay in acne treatment—it tackles one of the key drivers of inflammatory acne rather than simply drying out whatever happens to be sitting on the surface. Acnecide contains 5% benzoyl peroxide, which releases oxygen in the skin and helps kill C. acnes, the bacteria associated with acne. It also helps unblock pores, so I've always relied on it when dealing with acne that features both congestion and inflammation.

6. The Ordinary Sulfur 10% Powder-To-Cream Concentrate

Sulfur is one of those old-school acne ingredients that is currently having a bit of a comeback. It works as a keratolytic and has antimicrobial properties, meaning it helps to loosen dead skin cells, absorb excess oil, and calm the appearance of inflamed blemishes. This treatment takes a bit of getting used to—it starts as a powder and transforms into a thin cream when you rub it onto the skin. It's formulated with 10% colloidal sulfur alongside niacinamide and L-carnitine, and I find it both quickly effective and gentle on skin.

It's not the strongest or fastest-acting treatment, but it still manages to clear a spot within a few days.
