We all have that one Disney movie we used to watch on repeat, don’t we? Alice in Wonderland continues to be that favorite for many, and what could be better than seeing the cartoon come to life in live-action form for a second time? With a star-studded cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and, of course, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, the fashion in this sequel is just as dreamy and exuberant as we could have hoped.
As with the first live-action film, costumes were designed by the incomparable Colleen Atwood, who has achieved a bucket list of design credits for films like Little Women, Chicago, Into the Woods, and Snow White & the Huntsman. After attending a screening of the movie (which is out in theaters today) and falling in love with all the ruffles and vibrant apparel we saw on Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the White Queen, we are currently channeling Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Keep reading to see which S/S 16 runway shows bear a resemblance to the fashion in this film, and shop pieces that remind us of the costumes.

The follow-up to Tim Burton’s first Alice in Wonderland feature revolves around the whimsical world of “Underland,” where Alice travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter and his family. The bold jewel-toned costumes seen throughout the movie may have well been ripped straight from the runways, most notably the S/S 16 collections of Gucci and Dries Van Noten, both of which showcased the reemergence of a sense of escapism in fashion. These characters’ clothes are not only utilitarian, they’re full of colorful prints, patterns, and silhouettes; regal purples and emerald shades are especially prominent. Capture the essence of these looks by filling your summer wardrobes with metallic accents, flamboyant hues, and floral prints.

Clashing colors and pattern play all feature prominently into Alice’s attire. The combination of bright hues and prints would even make the most seasoned of Alices feel at home in their tumble down the rabbit hole (or, rather, through the looking glass). Look 7 from the Gucci S/S 16 collection undoubtedly shares similar qualities with Alice’s costume, from the mix of standout shades and abstract prints to all the shiny detailing involved. If you’re looking to add a bold touch to your wardrobe, you’ll want to incorporate some avant-garde items like these into your rotation.

In film, one of the ways in which we get to know characters is through their costumes. The White Queen wears ruffles and textured fabric. Her look exudes grace, elegance, and femininity, all hallmark traits of the character—however, in this sequel, we discover she’s not the most honest or innocent of individuals. To channel your inner White Queen, take a page from Alexander McQueen. The S/S 16 collection was full of lacy, feminine frocks; re-create the look with more affordable options below.
