Why Are PEMF Mats the New Wellness Obsession? We Tested Them for 2 Months to Find Out

As a beauty editor who is also into all things health and wellness (prior to my current role in beauty, I also worked as a health journalist earlier in my career), PEMF mats have quietly been cropping up all over my feeds of late. If this is your first time hearing about PEMF mats, then you're not alone. I've just begun seeing them in boutique gyms and wellness clubs, luxury London spas, and as part of treatments in skincare and aesthetic clinics, but I have so many questions about what they are. As health and beauty-adjacent devices such as LED therapy become more popular alongside the rise of "longevity" in the health and wellness space, I wondered whether PEMF mats could become the next big wellness tool, or even a skin tool, too.

I took this as a sign to investigate PEMF technology and what its possible benefits are. So, I spoke to Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP, aesthetics doctor and owner of The Aesthetics Doctor, for the lowdown on the research and what we ought to know before taking the plunge. With many PEMF mats costing upwards of £1,000, I needed to know if this was really a worthwhile investment, or just a very expensive lie-down. So, I also rallied our scrupulous beauty team to put some of the most popular PEMF mats to the test first-hand for two entire months to get their verdict too. What is PEMF?

"PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. It uses a device to generate electromagnetic fields that are delivered to the body in pulses," explains Dr Ahmed. "These changing magnetic fields can induce very small electrical currents within tissues, which may influence cellular signalling and processes involved in pain, inflammation and tissue repair," he says. "PEMF itself isn’t new; forms of electromagnetic stimulation have been used medically for decades, including in certain bone-healing applications. What is newer is the wellness trend of incorporating lower-intensity PEMF technology into mats designed for people to lie on at home."

What Are the Benefits of PEMF?

"The area with the most promising evidence is musculoskeletal health, particularly pain and stiffness. Research has suggested potential benefits for conditions such as osteoarthritis and some forms of musculoskeletal pain, although the results aren’t consistent across every study," says Dr Ahmed.

"Some users also report feeling more relaxed or sleeping better after using a PEMF mat. However, I would distinguish those subjective wellness benefits from outcomes that have been convincingly demonstrated in clinical trials," he says. "Claims that PEMF mats can dramatically improve sleep, boost energy, 'detox' the body, accelerate metabolism or provide broad anti-ageing benefits currently go beyond the strength of the evidence."

What Does PEMF Research Say?

"I would describe the evidence as promising in some areas, but not definitive," says Dr Ahmed. "There have been multiple randomised trials and systematic reviews looking at PEMF, particularly for osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain. Some meta-analyses have found improvements in pain, stiffness and physical function. However, there is a major caveat: studies use very different devices, frequencies, intensities, treatment durations and protocols. An umbrella review found the strongest agreement around short-term pain reduction in osteoarthritis, but also highlighted generally small studies, heterogeneous treatment protocols and limitations in study quality," he says.

"More recent evidence illustrates that uncertainty nicely. A 2026 meta-analysis of knee osteoarthritis trials found some improvements at particular time points, but not consistent improvements across all pain and functional measures, and noted that some statistically significant changes might not translate into a meaningful difference for patients. So there is genuine science behind PEMF, but I wouldn’t present it as a cure-all," he adds.

How Effective Is At-Home PEMF?

"This is where consumers need to be particularly careful," Dr Ahmed tells me. "Evidence for PEMF as a therapeutic modality isn’t automatically evidence for every PEMF mat available online. Devices can vary enormously in their magnetic field strength, pulse frequency and waveform, and those parameters may influence biological effects. Clinical studies generally evaluate a specific device and treatment protocol, whereas an at-home mat may operate quite differently," he says.

"I would therefore regard a home PEMF mat as a potential adjunct to wellbeing or conventional treatment, rather than a replacement for evidence-based medical care, physiotherapy, exercise, medication or appropriate investigation of persistent pain. If someone enjoys using one and feels it helps with relaxation, recovery or discomfort, that’s reasonable, but I would be cautious about spending thousands of pounds based on claims that aren’t supported by studies of that particular device," he says.

What to Look for in a PEMF Mat

"The first thing I’d look for is transparency. The manufacturer should clearly state the device’s intensity, frequency range and recommended treatment protocol rather than simply using vague terms such as 'cellular healing' or 'detoxification'," says Dr Ahmed.

"I would also look for appropriate UK regulatory compliance and good safety information, as well as evidence specifically relating to the device or comparable parameters. Be particularly sceptical of companies using research on medical PEMF equipment to imply that their consumer mat has been clinically proven when the actual product hasn’t been studied, he adds. "Consumers should also check the warranty, returns policy and aftercare. These products can be expensive, and a higher price doesn’t necessarily mean a stronger evidence base."

Currentbody Wellness Infrared PEMF Mat

When the Currentbody PEMF mat arrived at my door, the poor postman was huffing and puffing. As it turns out, PEMF mats (or, at least this one) are really quite heavy. I live in a maisonette, so I needed a second pair of hands to get this upstairs, where it permanently lived in my bedroom during the two-month testing period. The reason for its significant weight is that the base of the mat is filled with crystals, specifically amethyst and obsidian stones. Supposedly, amethyst promotes relaxation, whilst obsidian retains heat to enhance recovery. The mat incorporates both PEMF and infrared technology, so you can benefit from both electromagnetic technology and the warming heat of infrared.

You can customise the strength of the PEMF as well as the infrared heat via the remote, and set the duration of your treatment, which can be anywhere between one and nine hours. I first used this during the summer heatwaves, so I was reluctant to stay on it for too long, but I have begun testing it more as the weather has cooled down. As for the PEMF tech, you can't really feel this. However, CurrentBody supplies you with a small vial that contains a magnet inside, which, when you hold it over the mat, causes the metal disc to frantically jump around, so you know the PEMF is active.

The mat itself is full-length, and at 5ft 6 in, my full body fit comfortably on the mat (although if you're very tall, your lower legs might reach past the end of the mat. I found lying down on it comfortable, and I usually doubled up my sessions with my LED mask or some gentle stretching. I'll admit: I did find it hard to find time to use this, so I mostly stuck to a half-hour treatment before bed a couple of times a week.

On the nights I used this, I found my sleep was more restful. I wear an Oura ring, and I could visibly see how it helped my body reach a 'restored' state during my treatments, which impacted my sleep quality, too. The warming infrared felt amazing, particularly on sore muscles post-workout. I can't say I really felt the PEMF during use, but I did feel rested. I even fell asleep during some of the sessions. Curiously, my dog always seemed drawn to the mat whenever I turned it on. Maybe he had a primal sense of the restorative effects? Maybe he just had FOMO? Who knows.

Overall, I've enjoyed adding this into my routine. If you're someone who enjoys a spa day or saunas, but don't have the time to go regularly, then this is a nice alternative to have at home. I can't say it particularly helped with pain (I'd always enlist the help of a professional as a first port of call), but it did enable me to experience some restorative relaxation and hopefully lower my cortisol levels. Would I buy it myself? I wouldn't be willing to pay for it, to be totally honest. I also found that it took up a lot of space in my small bedroom, and because it's so heavy, it was difficult to put away and get back out again, which was a blocker for me actually using it as regularly as I'd like. However, if you have the extra space and cash to splash, then this makes for a great addition to your routine to help with relaxation, stress and post-workout recovery. I should also add that I love my CurrentBody LED mask and the tech behind it, so if there's a brand I'd trust to buy a PEMF mat from, I wouldn't hesitate to go to the brand for this too.

Bon Charge Infrared PEMF Mat Demi

"I'm the first person to admit I love a bit of wellness woo-woo from time to time, particularly when it doesn't require any hard work," says beauty director Shannon Lawlor. "That being said, when a wellness device costs hundreds of pounds and involves crystals, I put my journalist head back on and become a sceptic. And I'm not going to lie, I entered this testing process with a heavy dose of scepticism.

"I really struggle to sleep and struggle relentlessly with stress and bodily tension, aches and pains, so in theory, a PEMF speaks to me. But I want to address the red flag that I personally wasn't able to overcome, and that is the addition of crystals. I believe fervently that everyone has the right to be into what they're into and believe what they believe, but the thing that sits uneasily with me in this case is the way in which the presence of the crystals sits in a more science-led space with PEMF. Although various PEMF mats contain different crystals with different claims, I won't be touching on them today, as I don't want to blur the lines between proven clinical technology and largely unproven wellness claims. Plus, although this mat is a more budget-friendly option, PEMF mats are expensive, and I can't help but feel as though a huge chunk of the cost could be shaved off if the things weren't jam-packed with what seems to be thousands of crystals.

"Now I've got that off my chest; onto the positives. My gosh, this gadget is relaxing. 15 minutes of lying on the mat before bed had me unwound and feeling positively ready for sleep. Did I notice a particular improvement in my sleep long-term? Not massively, but it definitely helped my brain get into a sleepier mood. The mat itself is quite complex to work with, so I'd recommend reading the instructions thoroughly. There are various settings for various results, although I'll admit I didn't notice much of a difference in any of them.

"I'm going to be brutally honest here: the PEMF element is incredibly hard to judge because you don't feel anything. And it's even harder to review when you include the heating element—the relaxation that the heat brings makes it impossible to gauge PEMF success (whether placebo or not). Am I more relaxed because of the magnetic field or because I spent 15-20minutes lying on a wonderfully warm mat and switching off my brain before climbing into bed? The jury is also out on the power of the red lights, particularly as you are instructed to wear loose-fitting clothes on the mat, so the LED never actually meets skin.

"Regardless of all of my hang-ups, I've enjoyed using the Bon Charge PEMF Mat Demi. It has been a lovely addition to my pre-bed routine. Would I spend £600 of my hard-earned cash on it? Not unless I could do so without a second thought or a shred of stress."

Higherdose Infrared PEMF Go Mat

"When I first received this mat, I was surprised by how compact and lightweight it was," says deputy beauty editor Grace Lindsay. "I know other PEMF mats can be really heavy, and whilst this is weighty, it’s relatively easy to move around in my flat. Plus, it’s so easy to use. As someone totally new to PEMF mats, I wasn’t sure how it would work, but this one comes with a detailed manual, including a breakdown of all the different temperatures and wavelengths and what they can help with. All you do is attach the control panel to the mat, plug it in, use the buttons to select your wavelength and temperature, and then wait a little while for it to heat up.

"I liked using it before bed, after I had been to the gym, as I personally found the infrared heat really relaxing. I felt like it helped with any tense muscles, especially in my shoulders and back, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day. That said, I’m yet to notice if the PEMF technology has made a huge difference to how I feel, but perhaps I need to test it for a little longer.

"It goes without saying that this is an incredibly expensive piece of kit. If, like me, you love a sauna or steam room and want to bring that relaxing heat element into your own home, I really recommend it; however, if you’re looking for something specifically for post-workout muscle recovery or even serious muscle pain, you might be better off consulting an expert and seeing what they recommend before investing. It might not be for everyone, but I can certainly see myself using this every single night."

Who Should Avoid PEMF?

"The biggest concern is people with implanted electronic medical devices, such as pacemakers, implantable defibrillators or some neurostimulators, because electromagnetic fields can potentially interfere with these devices. FDA documentation on magnetic-field technologies specifically highlights this potential interaction," says Dr Ahmed.

"People with implanted metal or other medical devices should check compatibility with both their clinician and the device manufacturer before using a PEMF mat. I’d also advise anyone who is pregnant, has a significant medical condition, has recently undergone surgery, or is receiving treatment for cancer to speak to their doctor before using one, because safety data may be limited for these groups," he says.

"Ultimately, a PEMF mat should be viewed as a wellness or complementary tool rather than a substitute for medical assessment. If someone has persistent or unexplained pain, the priority should be establishing why they’re experiencing it rather than simply treating the symptom at home," he adds.
