While this type of fabric seems like the most simple to launder, there are still important things to look out for to ensure the piece stays in pristine condition for as long as possible. Read on for an easy-to-follow guide on exactly how to wash your cotton sweaters and then shop our favorite cotton knits.
1. Read the label.
Before you do anything, make sure to read the sweater's care label. This usually details exactly how to wash (and dry) the garment.
2. Separate by color.
It's super important that you wash your cotton sweater with like colors. If you have a white sweater, wash it with other whites. Similarly, wash a dark-hued sweater with other dark colors to avoid any color transfer.
3. Set to the correct wash cycle.
When it comes to laundering a cotton sweater, the best cycles on which to set the washing machine are either "wool" or "delicate." If you don't have these settings, simply choose the shortest cycle.
4. Set the temperature.
Setting the machine to the correct temperature is very important in ensuring the sweater stays in the best condition possible. When washing bright-colored sweaters, select the cold water option to help maintain the color of the garment. For dark-colored sweaters, choose the warm water setting. Note: Always avoid washing in hot water, unless the tag says otherwise.
5. Be careful when drying the cotton sweater.
Dry the garment on a low heat setting for a maximum of 10 minutes. Then, take out the sweater and lay it flat on a towel or drying rack. Avoid hanging the sweater, as this can cause stretching and shoulder bumps.
