The Accessory We Spotted on the Chicest Guests at Our 20th Anniversary Party
Who What Wear's 20th anniversary party was an event you did not want to miss. The guests were A-list, the location was iconic, and most importantly, the outfits were good. Amidst all our people-watching, one accessory in particular kept catching our eye: the watches. They're arguably the accessory of the year, but we weren't seeing just any watch. Movado's Museum Bangle was spotted on some of the night's best-dressed guests, and it's no surprise why. With its gold bracelet, black dial, and signature dot at 12 o'clock, it's a timepiece that reads more like jewelry. Extremely chic, if you ask us.
Editor in Chief Kat Collings, associate editorial director Eliza Huber, designer Sami Miró, and model Soukeyna Diouf each put their own styling spin on the Museum Bangle, proving just how versatile the jewelry-inspired watch can be. Spoiler: They all agree the watch is a statement on its own. We caught up with all four to talk about their looks, their favorite styling details, and why a great watch deserves a spot in your evening wardrobe.
Leave it to our editor in chief, Kat Collings, to take an already cool accessory and make it even cooler. For the evening, Collings wore a two-tone dress in ultra-fine French plissé and styled the Movado Museum Bangle in an extremely fashionable way. Instead of wearing it on her wrist, she fastened the watch over the sleeve of her dress. "For eveningwear, I love a daintier watch that blurs the line between a timepiece and a bracelet," Collings explains. "I chose my dress with styling versatility in mind: its featherlight fabric lets me clasp the watch over the sleeve for an editorial feel, and its crisp texture holds its shape if I push the sleeves up to let the watch shine against my skin. While I let the watch stand alone as a hero piece, it would also stack beautifully with other gold bracelets for a more layered look."
Our fashion director, Eliza Huber, took a different approach to party dressing, opting for a vintage little black dress from 2002. The minimalist silhouette provided the perfect backdrop for her accessories, with the Movado Museum Bangle playing an important role. "The dress I chose was from spring/summer 2002—a simple little black dress that felt cool and polished. It also allowed my Movado watch to stand out and be the star of the look. Think of the dress being the canvas and the watch being the art," Huber says. When it comes to styling a watch for an evening out, she's all for keeping the rest of her jewelry simple. "At night, I much prefer to wear a watch like my Movado with just a matching pair of gold earrings and a diamond ring. If something is beautiful, you want to look at it, not be distracted by so many things that you can't find it in the crowd."
Designer Sami Miró knows a thing or two about making classic pieces feel fresh for years to come. "My whole world is built on pieces that outlast trends, and the best accessories are the ones you're still reaching for in twenty years," she tells me. Her WWW20 look was no exception. She wore a pinstripe bandeau and matching high-waisted column skirt from her own label, Sami Miro Vintage. With minimal gold jewelry and slicked-back hair, the Movado Museum Bangle was the finishing touch. "I styled it the way Movado treats the Museum dial, starting with a classic and stripping it back until it feels new," Miró explains. "Slicked-back hair, pointed patent heels, and fine gold, so the only real statement is on my wrist." Her advice for accessorizing is to know when to stop. "The Museum Bangle can hold its own in a stack, but tonight it gets its own arm. Stack with intention, then stop one piece before you want to."
Soukeyna Diouf made a strong case for wearing a statement watch with an equally statement-making dress. Her plum-colored, embellished gown was a standout on its own, but the addition of her gold Movado Museum Bangle made the look that much better. Rather than piling on more accessories, she kept things simple. "My look for the evening is inspired by the color of the season—this monochrome plum is the perfect canvas for my new statement piece," Diouf explains. "My Movado Museum Bangle gets to be the center of attention, as she deserves. When I'm wearing such a piece, I do not think much else is needed." And for Diouf, the watch is much more than an accessory. "As a lover of fine art, I'm literally wearing it on my wrist. It goes beyond telling time, it tells a story."
