6 Accessory Trends That Are Starting to Feel Dated and Their 2024 Replacements

Given that I'm 100% an accessory girl, you're in good hands—trust me. In fact, I often have to remind myself to buy actual clothes to wear with the accessories I'd rather spend my money on. You probably get my drift. The only thing that I don't love about accessories is that they don't typically have quite as much longevity as other fashion trends, which is why I'm writing this particular piece of content.

I've been keeping a close eye on accessories on my Instagram and TikTok feeds and in real life, and there are a handful of beloved ones that have become quite oversaturated. Whenever that happens, it's safe to assume they've peaked, but that doesn't mean they're "over" by any means.

Ready for the intel? Keep scrolling for the accessory trends that are starting to feel tired and to shop the ones that are on the rise.

Feeling Dated: Denim Shoes

The Replacement: Satin Shoes

Denim everything infiltrated fashion in 2023, but I think we'll see less of it this year. I, for one, had trouble embracing denim shoes and accessories because I wear jeans often and it's just a lot of denim. Something you will see a lot of in 2024 is satin shoes. I fully expect these Prada mules to be one of the first new It shoes of spring.

Feeling Dated: Cowboy Hats

The Replacement: Hair Bows

"Girly" trends—the main one being hair bows—appear to be sticking around for the foreseeable future. A good indicator of this is that it's been a very popular trend for celebs on the red carpet as of late. On the flip side, I don't see cowboy hats sticking around, even though the Western trend still has legs. They're just a bit specific and can come across as costumey.

Feeling Dated: Hot-Pink Accessories

The Replacement: Oxblood Accessories

Yes, 2023 was understandably all about Barbie pink, but 2024 belongs to oxblood thanks in large part to Gucci's S/S 24 showing. Deep-red accessories are an easy way to make your outfits look rich.

Feeling Dated: Red Tights

The Replacement: Fishnet Tights

I fully support us all continuing to wear our red tights, but it's a trend that doesn't feel unique anymore given its popularity. It's also been around for a minute. If you want to add a fresher look to your outfits, wear a pair of fishnets instead. Pro tip: If you're wearing jeans, cheat the look with a pair of fishnet socks.

Feeling Dated: Puffy Bags

The Replacement: Suede Bags

Puffy bags (quilted or not) have been wildly popular for several seasons, but I think it's time for something new and a bit more elegant. Enter suede bags, which are timeless and expensive looking. Recently, designer brands like The Row and Saint Laurent have been making their most popular bag styles in suede, which is telling.

Feeling Dated: Pearl Necklaces

The Replacement: Tennis Necklaces

As far as jewelry is concerned, pearl necklaces of every shape and size have become less of a trend recently, making way for sparkly tennis necklaces. While a diamond one is a major investment, there are plenty of lab-made options on the market that are just as beautiful.
