What’s Cool in Fashion is a series where our managing editor, Kristen Nichols, highlights the trends and designers on her radar—and how she’s wearing them IRL.
As a fashion editor for Who What Wear, my eye is constantly focused on the trends unfolding everywhere from runway shows to the street style scene to product hitting retailers. When it comes to the outfits I’m wearing, I’m regularly interpreting the trends for myself and working them into my personal style. Yep, you’ll often see me posting outfits on my Instagram account, @kristenmarienichols, with photos of the items I’m wearing and an inside glimpse at my life as a Who What Wear editor.
So what are the pieces I’ve been wearing recently? With summer just around the corner, I’ve been getting a jump start on items for the season ahead. That means everything from dresses in micro-mini silhouettes to wide-leg cuts of denim to statement earrings paired with sculptural blazers. Each piece taps into my ever-evolving personal style, which, at the moment, is a blend of ‘90s minimalism (with details like barely there skinny straps) and old-world romance (including multiple voluminous puffed sleeves).
What you’ll find here is a mix of designer pieces and affordable finds, including a great pair of faux-crocodile slingbacks that are just $49. Ahead, see 11 pieces I’m wearing now and shop the edit for yourself.
I plan to live in minidresses all summer long. This one by Réalisation is a new addition to my wardrobe. It's made from a luxe silk fabric and has '90s-inspired skinny straps, so I feel a little bit like Cindy Crawford when I throw it on.
What I love most about this dress are the long sleeves and knee-length silhouette, which make it the perfect piece to wear anywhere from a date night to dinner with friends. While I would normally wear this dress with heels, I opted for a comfortable pair of sneakers instead—throwback white Reeboks, which have quickly become my favorite weekend shoes.
I'm absolutely in love with this Zimmermann dress—from the patchwork print to the romantic silhouette. Remember how I mentioned I love puffy sleeves? It's the trend I just can't quit, and here's yet another way I've been wearing them.
It's been a while since I've worn maxi silhouettes, but they're officially back, everyone. Our market editor Nicole Eshaghpour has been into skirt versions, and I'm getting on board with the dresses. This one feels like a new take on the slip dress, with thicker straps, a V-neck, and body-hugging curves.
Exaggerated proportions—like the elongated arms and extra-wide hips of this blazer—are clearly a trend I'm behind. The piece is by Marina Moscone, an immensely talented designer everyone needs to have on their radar.
Charles & Keith is an affordable brand our editors always turn to for on-trend accessories. These slingbacks nail a few trends I'm loving right now including sculptural heels and faux-crocodile finishes. At just $49, you can't beat the price.
