My friends would describe me as a skincare-obsessive. After developing acne in my mid-20s, I went on a deep dive to understand the differences between the various serums, acids and formulas to create a skincare routine that would get my skin back to where it had been before. It took its time, but finally, I can say that my routine is in perfect order for what I need. Now, I’m ready to bolster the hard work of my beauty cabinet and enter the world of beauty treatments.

As a novice to in-clinic treatment, I took my time searching through all the exciting beauty treatment offerings to find the one I wanted. My needs demanded a plumping effect without filler, supporting my skin’s health as well as appearance, and minimal downtime. Yes, it’s a big ask, but I think I found it. A few months ago, a colleague recommended I try Juläine—a treatment designed to smooth skin and restore healthy function using biostimulators to work from the inside out. Two months on, and the results are clear. Here's what to know...

What Is Juläine?

Juläine is a biostimulator that encourages the skin's natural collagen and elastic production. It contains PLLA (Poly-L-Lactic Acid), hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, which activate the fibroblast cells in our skin that synthesise collagen and elastic fibres to plump the skin. Unlike filler, Juläine works with the skin's biochemistry to "help skin help itself", so promises results that are natural and low-inflammatory. The treatment focuses on skin quality, targeting multiple skin concerns at once, including fine lines, firmness and hydration.

Benefits of Juläine

  • Improves skin elasticity and firmness
  • Minimises the appearance of fine lines
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Supports cell regeneration
  • Smooths skin texture

Coined the "invisible treatment", Juläine works to enhance skin health, encourage collagen production and create a "filler effect" without actually administering filler. The effect is natural-looking, as it works with the skin's natural processes. For me, the other benefit is the short downtime—the treatment takes around 15 minutes, after which most people are able to get on with their day.

What to Expect During a Juläine Treatment

My skin’s been through a lot over the past few years. In my mid 20s, I developed acne for the first time, and reaching my 30th birthday, I started to notice that the taut skin I’d become accustomed to was developing wrinkles and showing signs of tiredness. Whilst skincare is a concrete step in skin health, Juläine is the kind of treatment that works alongside topicals.

On my first trip to the Define Clinic in Central London, I was walked through the treatment by Dr Benji Dhillon, who clearly explained the process, the effects and the results. The Juläine treatment can include up to three sessions, and together we created a plan of two sessions for my specific needs. The actual treatment is an injectable into the side of the face, which is typically administered with a cannula through one entry point.

As my first foray into injectables, the feeling of the long, thin needle was new, but definitely not painful. Dr Dhillon pencilled lines across my face as a guide for the target areas, then we got straight into it.

For my treatment, the cannula was inserted around the mid cheek and was moved around to disperse the biostimulator to the target areas. It’s a strange sensation, as the injection is placed between the dermis and subcutaneous plane, deeper than most skincare can reach, and the ideal depth to promote rejuvenation from the ground up. The injection itself isn't painful, just an unusual sensation if you haven't tried it before. The process itself took about ten minutes, and once done, I was able to get straight back into my day.

Juläine Immediately After

Immediately after the injection, I had redness around my cheeks (my skin adores a little redness), but this subsided throughout the day. Throughout the rest of the day, my face was slightly swollen and quite tender, with a slight redness around the needle entry points. I headed straight into work and was able to carry on with my day. For the first 12 hours following the treatment, you should avoid makeup, and thankfully, the redness did subside throughout the day. In the following days, I had some tenderness and yellow bruising around the entry points, but nothing that a tinted spf couldn’t cover up. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, and therefore, the aftermath can vary, but for me, I was taken by the ease of the treatment.

The Results

Results can be seen within six weeks of the first session, and gradually improve. About five weeks after the first treatment, I started to see the results, and a week after the second treatment, others started to notice too. The collagen-boosting properties added a filler-like plumpness to my cheeks and jaw, and my skin is noticeably smoother and tighter. For me, getting this treatment wasn’t just about how my skin looked on the outside, but actually targeting my skin health from the inside out. Now, a few weeks after my final treatment, my skin looks tauter and more sculpted, and I have more definition around my cheeks. The best part is that the effects continue to improve over the coming months.

Juläine Side Effects

Of course, with any injectable treatment, it is important to bear in mind that there is always a risk of infection or reaction, so it is of utmost importance to ensure you are booking with a qualified medical professional.

Most side effects from Juläine are mild and temporary, including redness at injection sites, mild swelling, bruising and tenderness. It is always advisable to seek medical advice before booking in for Juläine treatment.
