Now that summer is officially over, we’ve been hard at work sorting through our wardrobes and packing away the pieces we won’t need for a while. And while we’re all happy to pull out our sweaters and boots and other cold-weather staples, it can be hard to say goodbye to pieces we’ve come to love and rely on. One accessory we’re definitely not ready to say goodbye to yet? The choker.
Thankfully, as evidenced by the F/W 16 runways, chokers aren’t going anywhere. They are, however, getting a styling update, says blogger Elizabeth Keene, who we turned to for the jewelry trends we’ll be seeing everywhere this season. Keene—who’s been featured in Vogue, Glamour, and Marie Claire—tells us she’s also seeing statement earrings and pieces that incorporate velvet, the It textile of the moment.
Her biggest takeaway for styling your jewelry this season? “When you’re wearing bold earrings, keep your necklace simple, and when you’re wearing a bold necklace, keep your earrings simple,” says the A Keene Sense of Style blogger, who opts for pieces from BaubleBar. “You want your jewelry to add to your look without causing it to look busy.”

As we already mentioned, 2016 has been the year of the choker. For fall, Keene gives the trend a fresh update by layering delicate chokers together. “Chokers are huge this season, so I decided to layer two of them for maximum glamour,” she explains. “The gold ear crawlers pair nicely with this combination because they are subtle but still add a bit of sparkle.” Pair them with an oversize bell-sleeve top like hers for an unexpected evening look.
While statement necklaces have long been a wardrobe staple, it’s standout earrings in bold colors that are in the spotlight this season. “I love that these earrings are playful and elegant at the same time,” Keene says. “I wanted a bold pop of color to dress up my black-and-white romper,” she added, and these certainly did the trick. Try wearing them with pared-down pieces like a gold cross ring and a simple choker.
Velvet is another trend that’s everywhere this season—even when it comes to jewelry. Keene’s maroon velvet choker is a great way to test out the trend: “It’s oh so fall, and then I thought it needed more glam, so I added my pyramid necklace for length before topping it off with a layered gold choker,” Keene explains. Wear them with a blazer to take your look from formal to playful.
