This Major Fall Shoe Trend Came Out of Nowhere
Circa 2011, I admittedly wouldn't have thought twice about adding yet another pair of glitter shoes to my already sizable collection. (For example, remember those Marc by Marc Jacobs mouse flats? I had them, and mine were gold glitter.) I became a bit of a magpie (correction: a huge magpie) from an early age and never really grew out of it. But I'm also not the type to wear something passé just because I like it. Thus, my glitter shoes went to the back of my closet when the trend faded away. That said, fashion is many things, and cyclical is undoubtedly one of them, as evidenced by the F/W 17 runways. Suddenly, a slew of major designers (e.g., Chanel, Saint Laurent, and Isabel Marant) were once again endorsing glitter shoes, much to my delight.
The minimalism trend certainly isn't dead, but maximalism is the 2017 way, so while glitter shoes haven't been around much in recent years, sparkly footwear is a natural extension of the maximalism trend and thus has become a thing again. The key to pulling off the glitter shoe trend in real life (as opposed to looking like you just stepped off the Gucci runway) is to keep the rest of your look simple and choose shoe silhouettes that veer classic yet just happen to be covered in glitter.
