I'm a Modest Dresser—This Is the Capsule Wardrobe I'm Committed to for 2022

As I am a modest dresser, fall just so happens to be my favorite season. While my summer consisted of breezy dresses and linen galore, the upcoming season gives me a lot more options. Because of the large variety, I found myself getting a bit carried away in the past by reaching for every trend that I could. Over the years, I've tapped into the potential of my personal style and have taken a slightly more minimal approach to planning my wardrobe. That's not to say I won't be dabbling in a few trends this season. There are definitely a few that have certainly been high on my radar—pastels, lace details, and biker-style clothing, to name a few. But to keep myself in check for fall, I've made myself a wardrobe checklist of pieces I'll be prioritizing this season as a modest dresser.

Below, you can see and shop the 13 pieces that are must-haves in my closet this season. As a modest dresser, planning an outfit takes a little bit more time than usual, but with the groundwork I'm setting, there are already dozens of outfit ideas that are coming to mind. With that said, keep scrolling to kick-start your fall wardrobe.

1. Oversize Blazer

I've missed my trusty blazers in the summer heat and am ready to bring on the layering for fall. I like an oversize fit because it feels less formal and more relaxed for an everyday outing.

2. Maxi Skirt

Maxi hemlines were spotted heavily in the recent runway collections, and as a modest dresser, I'm pleased to have more market to work with. While I usually reach for midi lengths, I'm looking forward to styling full-length options.

3. Relaxed Knit

A cozy sweater can go a long way. Wear it as is, tie it around your waist, or throw it over your shoulders. It's a key piece that can change your look instantly.

4. Knee-High Boots

Ankle boots are great, but over the past few seasons, I've found myself gravitating toward knee-high styles, so I think that's where my priority lies at the moment. They're easy to wear with tapered pants and under dresses and skirts.

5. Easy Flats

I'll be honest. For years, I was never really a flats kind of girl. But since 2020, there's been a pivot to comfort in fashion, and the selection of flats has become top-tier, from ballet flats to sleek loafers. My feet are definitely grateful for the update in my wardrobe.

6. Elevated Heels

While I wear flats on an everyday basis, I still like to incorporate elevated heels from time to time. Whether it's for a night out or I simply feel like dressing up to go to the office, a sleek pair of heels will always come in handy.

7. Puddle Pants

Being 5'3", I never thought floor-length pants would work for me, but it's clear that I was wrong. With the right styling, puddle pants can look effortlessly cool. Not only are they comfortable, but they also go with just about everything.

8. Wide-Leg Jeans

On the days I feel like giving my puddle pants a little break, relaxed jeans are what I opt for.

9. Loose Button-Down

If you're an avid Who What Wear reader, you'd notice that loose button-downs are a favorite staple of ours. You can wear them open over a dress, under a blazer, or loosely tucked into jeans—the options are endless.

10. Long-Sleeve Tee

While most people have a vast collection of tanks in their basics drawer, long-sleeve tees are my priority. I like how I can wear them with a pair of relaxed bottoms or use them as a key layering piece in my fall outfits. Either way, they're getting a lot of love from me.

11. Neutral Sneakers

If you haven't noticed, comfort is a common theme in my wardrobe for 2022 and beyond. If I'm putting together a casual ensemble, I rely on a trusty pair of neutral sneakers to finish off the look.

12. Leather Jacket

No matter what year it is, a leather jacket is always hanging in my coat closet. It instantly adds a cool factor to any outfit, whether it's a knit dress or a T-shirt and jeans.

13. Black Handbag

Don't get me wrong. I love a statement bag, but my black handbags probably get the most wear. I finally invested in the Staud option below, which I know I'll be reaching for on a daily basis this season.
