According to an Expert, Your Fragrance Should Match Every Part of You—Here's How
I've always loved the concept of a signature scent, but the second I commit to one fragrance profile, I find another I love. Over the years, I've found it best to rotate through a few different options: something woody, earthy, and musky for fall; floral, powdery, and sweet for spring; and a mix of both for spring and summer. Recently, I've gotten very into the idea of creating my own custom scents, layering my favorites for something new and unexpected, which is where Erin Nicole comes in.
The beauty lover, former Nordstrom beauty stylist, and current fragrance expert walked me through layering my favorite perfumes from Carolina Herrera's Good Girl collection to satisfy every part of my personality.
Do you believe in wearing different fragrances for different moods?
I love having a fragrance wardrobe to meet my varying moods, outfits, and occasions! I also love collecting fragrances that capture a specific scent memory and hold sentimental meaning. The first place to begin is to identify the fragrance family and specific notes you are drawn to. Knowing what scents you love and don't love will always help you navigate what's worth trying on the skin. Don't overwhelm your nose; try to limit yourself to five fragrances at a time when smelling in a store. Once you narrow down a favorite, always try it on the skin before committing!
Great advice! Do you believe in daytime vs. nighttime scents?
I do! I'm a huge believer in wearing whatever you love at any time, but I do think certain fragrances shine in specific settings. To me, it's part of the art of dressing! You're creating cohesion between the atmosphere, your outfit, and your fragrance. Perfume is the ultimate invisible accessory, and can really shape how we present ourselves. For daytime, I gravitate toward citrus, soft florals, and clean musks—notes that feel bright and energizing. Good Girl Blush Eau de Parfum is a perfect example, with bright mandarin and bergamot paired with peony, one of my favorite florals. For evening, I love richer, more sensual notes like tonka bean, sandalwood, vanilla, and amber. Good Girl Jasmine Absolute Eau de Parfum is the ultimate date-night fragrance—it's warm, sensual, and completely addictive.
What's your best advice for creating your own unique scent mix based on your mood, occasion, outfit, etc.?
Fragrance layering can be a great way to explore new combinations and add your own personality to fragrance! I tend to view fragrances as masterpieces on their own, so I like to be very intentional when layering. Choose fragrances with similar scent profiles and notes that will complement one another, or you can look for fragrances within the same franchise for amplification. For example, I really love to layer Good Girl Blush Eau de Parfum with Very Good Girl Eau de Parfum because they both have some tropical notes with warm vanilla in the base. The combination of ylang-ylang and exotic lychee is so good together and adds so much dimension. Fragrance layering always keeps things fresh and exciting!
