Although I usually dress rather conservatively, I secretly love how the midi skirt demands a more revealing top to balance the demure silhouette and shape. Since the skirt covers up so much leg, pairing it with a form-fitting, skin-baring top makes the most sense. For those looking to try crop tops, the high-waisted midi is its perfect counterpart.

When crafting your own ensemble, try to remember this midi mantra: volume on bottom needs to be balanced by a close-fitting top. Since every midi has a rather full skirt, keep it streamlined above the waist with a cropped jacket like my gorgeous mint moto.

Edgy accessories like a studded metallic bag and linked ring set underscore the faintly downtown feel of the look.

Unless you have model-like height, the midi skirt requires very specific footwear. First, you absolutely must wear a heeled shoe—no exceptions, no excuses. This may sound draconian, but trust me: for this occasion, flats are not your friend. Secondly, your shoe of choice should expose the top of the foot to lengthen the appearance of your leg; a very thin strappy sandal or classic pump is ideal.

If baring a sliver of stomach isn’t quite your speed, I also have tips for crafting a more polished look. My secret formula is to combine a form-fitting top (always tucked in!) with a waist-cinching belt. Get tips on how to master the looped cincher here.

My pumps fall into the aforementioned approved footwear list, but I made sure to keep it interesting by selecting a pair with a lock detail and a rich forest green color.

Pink-tinted lucite glasses are a modern and playful touch that keep the outfit from reading overly prim.

A tiny box clutch may be perfectly proper, but the marbled digital print and colorful embellishments keep it from feeling fussy.
