Join us on a trip down memory lane, won’t you? It’s hard to believe that eight years today our co-founders Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power launched Who What Wear, a website dedicated to bringing fashion fanatics everywhere the latest in runway, celebrity, and street style trends (and the best shopping too, of course!). Two books, five offices, and two spinoffs—Byrdie and Domaine—later, Who What Wear is still going strong. To celebrate, we’re revisiting our biggest milestones throughout the years with some fun arithmetic! (Don’t worry, these are fashion numbers; no math required.)
In 2006, Katherine and Hillary launched Who What Wear in Katherine’s apartment. Flash forward to today: the headquarters are situated in a 6,000-square feet office in the heart of Los Angeles—all the better to accompany our growing team!
Two years after the site launched, Hillary and Katherine hired their first employee, a graphic designer they moved down from San Francisco. According to Hillary, it was the scariest time of her life. “We were responsible for someone’s livelihood and their paycheck; I was totally terrified!” she says.
A ton of blood, sweat, and tears have gone into What Was She Wearing: Answers, one of our site’s staple stories that is consistent a reader-favorite. Okay, we may be exaggerating a wee bit, but we can assure you plenty of detective work goes into bringing you all the need-to-know details on your favorite celebrity outfits. It’s all in a day’s work!
Step into our fashion closet—designed by the amazing California Closets—and you’ll find a glorious shoe wall stocked with all the essentials. Throw in racks upon racks of covetable clothing along with the latest bags and jewelry, and you have yourself a little slice of fashion paradise.
We’re not professional scouts by any means, but we like to believe we have an eye for rising talent. Just take a look at our original fashion shoot with Jennifer Lawrence. We photographed the Kentucky native and Oscar-winning actress in 2010 as she was earning rave reviews for her breakout role in Winter’s Bone.
For their second book, What to Wear, Where, Hillary and Katherine created the ultimate style guide for every occasion. The two got in on all the fun by actually modeling the outfits for all 50 occasions.
Not only was this gem our first-ever Trend Report, but it was our very first post, too! While the trend still holds strong today, in 2006 we were taking style cues from Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Simpson, and Gemma Ward.
How do you know you’ve made it? A 5,000-word write-up in the Wall Street Journal by esteemed journalist Katie Rosman is definitely a good start.
It wasn’t enough to just ID the pieces our favorite influencers were wearing, we wanted to know which items were on their must-have lists, too. Cue our Guest Editor series. The story kicked off with Nicole Richie back in 2007 and has since featured Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Alexa Chung, Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Stone, Blake Lively, and more!
As part of our 2013 relaunch, we introduced a brand new, completely shoppable story called Look of the Day. Each look was styled by our very own Fashion Director, offering endless outfit inspiration for a wide range of events and occasions.
This is a pretty exciting number, and we have all of our devoted followers to thank! Your continued support pushes us to create the best possible content every day.
