"I have this really funny habit that started way back in my Elle days, which is that when I’m on serious deadline, I listen to one album and one album only: Kid A by Radiohead. There’s something about it that I just find fundamentally soothing and energizing at the same time."
"No one gets me like Madonna. Whatever the mood, she knows the beat and lyrics to get the adrenaline rolling, inspire creativity, or turn a day around."
"Typically, I'll opt for something low-key but not too sleepy, like Baio or Tame Impala. If I'm stressed, Fleetwood Mac reliably mellows me out."
"When I need to get in my creative zone, my go-to is always Reverberation Radio—a weekly curated mix of the best music you've (maybe) never heard of. An eclectic combination of worldly rhythms and obscure gems, these tunes help me get there."
"Recently, I've been listening to Grimes's Art Angels album for energizing and inspirational purposes. The song 'Mother Tree' by Mother Mother also really helps me focus."
Schwab: "I love reggae. It's fun and always has good energy. It's the perfect balance with work, because it keeps the stress in check."
Vosper: "I actually love having on NPR in the morning when I'm working on my own before the team shows up. The talking is soothing for me. I'm used to working in a buzzy, open office, so I actually find talking to be the most pleasant background noise. Or Drake. Always Drake."
"My working nightmare would be no music/headphones, writing to the sound of someone eating granola or drinking iced coffee, because I have misophonia and it KILLS ME. I start the day with Bryson Tiller's Trapsoul. (You might recognize his voice from Kylie’s snaps. Side note: He passed on signing with Drake.) Then I'll switch to Soundcloud and see what’s new from Soulection or OVO Sounds. Both are really moody—kind of cheesy R&B sex music. I still really love Pandora for when I don’t want to make any decisions. (Pia Mia Pandora gives the best pop mix.) When I don’t know what I want, Travis Scott's Rodeo."
"I'm really into a new-to-me music platform called radiooooo.com. It presents music in a way that works perfectly with my work listening style. You select a country of origin, an era, and a tempo, and then the site just plays continuous music based on that. Perfect for productive workday vibes.
What hypes me up to tackle deadlines? Metallica. I lock myself in the bathroom, put my headphones in, and play 'Nothing Else Matters' at full volume, like, 17 times while doing some air-guitar, head-bang thing mixed loosely with Maori war-dance movements. Needless to say terrifying faces are made in the mirror and I walk out feeling like a boss."
"When I need to focus on writing, I put my headphones on and pull up Songza. It's like Pandora, but you can pick music based on your mood or activity. Lately, I've been listening to their jazz stations à la Carrie Mathison from Homeland. It's calming and more like white noise to drown out the conversations going on around me in the office."
"Usually I can't listen to music while I work; it's hard for me to concentrate. But T. Rex's Electric Warrior album is good for when I need a pick-me-up or as psych-up music on my walk to work."
"TLC's CrazySexyCool album gets my creative juices flowing."
