This Stylist Reveals the Only Shopping Guide You Need for Autumn

It’s time to talk about autumn. More specifically, what you need to buy. Approaching a new season and where to start your shopping list can be a daunting task. What trends really matter and what should you invest in first? We asked Sydney-based fashion stylist Leda Ross to look back over the recent A/W 16 presentations and present the top trends to try right now. You may already have these in your closets, so in some cases, it’s not about running out and dropping all your cash, but discovering a new way to style something.

“It might be because I'm a ’90s kid at heart, but I love velvet when it’s worn right. A little velvet mini skirt worn with a boyfriend shirt tucked in equals perfection. If you aren’t ready to try the look all the way, start small with accessories. Velvet boots will be everywhere come winter so get in early.”

“This trend means you finally get to pair that leopard-skin skirt with a polka-dot shirt. Anything goes—as long as you pick the right shapes for your body and don't drown in too many patterns, and pick one or two in similar colour tones. I love this trend because it’s all the trends mixed together for one big fashion party!”

“Think boho vibes, but with more patchwork. Flared denims and Woodstock-worthy capes are making a comeback. It’s all about texture and rich patterns mixed with earthy prints and paisley florals. You’ll want to wear with daisy chains in your hair, but if that’s not possible, wear with simple clean boots and add a modern neck tie.”

“This by far is my favourite A/W 16 trend. It might not seem like much, but it’s classically cool. The androgynous feel has a powerful element to it and a long coat to throw over any outfit will instantly elevate your look. My tip? Add a grey marle hoodie underneath and pair with white trainers for a model-off-duty vibe.”

“Preppy pastels, tweed and high collars. It’s a nod to the ’50s and I can’t get enough of the Mad Men inspired look. Layering is the key: Shirt + Dress + Trench = Classic.”

“Stripes will forever be a trend that has my heart, but what I love is how they’re reimagined each season and styled in different ways. This season, layer them under the velvet pinafore you buy first or opt for pattern stripes in different shapes to what you’d normally buy (like a cocoon coat). Red lip, optional.”
