While the greater fashion world still has quite a ways to go in being truly inclusive of women of all shapes and sizes, it seems that more and more we're reporting on news that suggests the industry is at least moving in the right direction. Enter Universal Standard, a just-launched online plus-size boutique.
Refinery29 sat down to chat with Alexandra Waldman and Polina Veksler, the two founders of the company, which exclusively sells women's clothing in sizes 10 to 28. Their goal was to fill what they saw as a void in the market for truly chic and fashion-forward designs for plus-size ladies.
"What’s out there is lacking a modern sensibility. There are more and more players coming into the field, but they all pander to either curvy girls’ uber-sexy boobaliciousness, or a quite conservative ‘aunt who dresses nicely in slacks’ sensibility," Waldman told Refinery29.
To wit, Universal Standard gives us sleek coats, blazers, skirts, basic T-shirts, and dresses that look like they'd be right at home alongside pieces from major brands like Helmut Lang or Rick Owens. (And the company's direct-to-consumer business model means that the prices aren't too exorbitantly, either.)
