If you ask people what their most worn pair of trousers is, I can almost guarantee you that the majority of them would answer with jeans. Some people might consider white jeans to be a little bit "dated", with many of us probably remembering them as a core Y2K trend in the form of skinny silhouettes (think early 2000s Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton paparazzi pictures). These facts aside, white is a denim wash that fashion people have never really given up on, and recently I've seen them more than ever. With dressing elegantly still very much a thing at the moment, white jeans—especially those that mimic the shape of wide-leg tailored trousers—certainly fit the classy bill. And, after doing some data digging, I've found that searches for "white jeans" are up 80% on Google this week alone. It’s clear that the style is back in the mainstream. Much like black, white is a timeless colour that can worn in any fabric or style of clothing without looking off-trend or out of place, and this is no less true throughout the colder months. You might originally be thinking that lighter denim washes are reserved for the spring and summer, but there is something that feels effortlessly elegant and grown-up about whites in the colder months too.

I’ll personally be styling mine with a white wool coat, a tonal cashmere knit and neutral trainers for a look that looks infinitely more chic but feels no less comfortable than your typical blue jeans outfits. For the evenings, I’d suggest pairing your white jeans with a silk blouse and court heels to keep hemlines off the floor. And white jeans are not just for minimalists like myself. SHOP WHITE JEANS AND COLOURFUL TRAINERS:

Whilst I appreciate the many brilliant dresses that abound, I've always been more of a trousers girl. That's not to say I don't bare a little leg every so often, but if you wanted to place a bet, more often than not I can be found wearing trousers—more specifically, jeans. So far I've found my perfect pair of blues, explored every cut from wide-leg to skinny and secured my favourite black jeans in washed and true shades, but that's where I've drawn the line. Style Notes: Despite being a denim devotee, I admit I've never actually tried white jeans. When I was 19, I worked in a small clothing boutique that sold a surprisingly impressive designer assortment for a college town such as mine. On the ready-to-wear side, its racks were lined with Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Lauren Manoogian, and Samuji. And for denim, we exclusively sold Frame Denim, the brand every LA and NYC fashion girl was wearing at the time. I adored every pair from the brand and too often spent my entire paycheque on jeans. 

One pair, in particular, that I bought and subsequently wore roughly three times a week every summer for years, was Frame’s Le Skinny de Jeanne style in white. When I graduated and moved to New York, I left a ton of clothing items behind, donating most of them and selling the rest. Those jeans were one of the pieces I parted ways with, an act I’m now very much regretting after spotting the exact same pair on none other than Meghan Markle. 

Markle was seen exiting an office in Montecito, California wearing arguably the chicest, most luxurious outfit I've ever seen, consisting of a camel-colored robe coat, a cream sweater, an Hermès shawl, Chanel slingbacks, and an oversize, all-white Goyard tote. But even with all of that draped on her, the fashion item that my eyes were immediately drawn to were her jeans, the same exact pair of white Frame skinnies that I owned in college. Envious, I immediately started searching the internet for a pair to replace the ones I got rid of five years ago.

I have my eyes and ears on the ground in Paris and I’m pleased to report that the novelty hasn’t worn off yet. I’ve taken to people-watching as an Olympic sport and I’m still constantly enamoured by the effortless style of French women of all ages, and how they move through the city in effortlessly chic, yet easy-to-wear ensembles. As we’ve deduced over the years, many of the style elements remain constant and are interchangeable and indeed transitional.

It’s hard to reference Parisian style without paying homage to denim. Come rain or shine, there’s one fashion staple French women revert to – straight-leg jeans. In particular, they’ve inherited mid-wash vintage Levi 501s (a highly sought-after style that can be found in almost every thrift store in town) with a frayed hem in the aforementioned tones. Second to that is an unexpected (but equally suave offering) —ecru and chalky jeans. Along with tea dresses and pelmet skirts, light denim is worn far and white across the capital. White jeans have fronted denim trends this season, and although French Sartorialists do consider trend reports, light-wash denim has become synonymous with the French-inspired capsule wardrobe for an age.

Slightly slackened white jeans are indicative of their pared-back style that still manages to exude intentionality. I defy you to not look chic in slightly boyish-fit white jeans. As a self-confessed ‘overdresser’, what I most admire is how French women celebrate the art of dressing daily. They aren’t afraid to commit to light washes that are more prone to spillages, even when travelling by Metro or with children. Their clothes are worn to live in — from day to night.

Pair off-white jeans with a contemporary shirt and matching accessories. If your jeans are a sweeping length, just add heels.

As we start considering the summer forecast, it’s worth noting that although hues typically become deeper, white denim is worn throughout the year — with toe-bearing footwear in the summer and later swapped for ankle-skimming boots, come autumn. For top-half pairings to emulate French style there is no rulebook. Pair bright denim just as you would its deeper counterpart — with anything from relaxed pieces — a blue poplin shirt, Breton jumper or embroidered blouse. Or a barely-there top for an elevated evening look. It also compliments monochromatic looks, a white shirt, for example, and least forgetting navy knitwear which loans a nautical feel.

Let's talk about jeans–and I mean really get into it. I made the conscious decision a while ago to phase jeans out of my wardrobe, not because I wanted to, but because I found the process of finding "the ones" so laborious that I almost swore off them altogether. Many brands proclaim to have the best jeans on the market, but when it came to finding a versatile pair with the right fit, wash and price, I'd give up one store into a try-on session. That was until one pair of M&S straight leg jeans changed my mind. 

It's funny how one pair of good jeans can transform your entire wardrobe. And after going from a dress devotee, to owning more pairs of jeans than I ever have my life, my M&S favourites have since split after being worn on heavy rotation, but they did give me the inspiration I needed to fall in love with denim all over again. My go-to? A classic pair of straight-legged mid-blue jeans with a firm hold, but after being swayed by some A-list approved wide leg jeans, and seeing baggy jeans dominating the runways, it's clear that this season, denim trends are getting experimental. 

"We had a long time of everyone being in sweat pants during the pandemic and I think we're rediscovering being in denim again," notes Amy Roberton, Creative Director at sustainable denim brand Seventy + Mochi. "That being said, I've worked in the industry for nearly 20 years and denim has always had moments when it was both in and out of fashion. I think designers have learnt to play with denim again which is why we are seeing so much of it on the runaways. It's such a versatile fabric that can be really playful which is something we all need more of right now. You can have denim in so many different weights, construction, colours and washes, it’s never ending, but we did have a long time when we were only doing 5 pocket jeans. Now it’s everything from suits to shoes, '70s inspired or noughties influenced– it's all going on!"

Style Notes: It just wouldn't be a denim round-up without a buzzy new style, and this spring belongs to the barrel leg. While the runways tried to convince us that supersized, low-slung, baggy denim was the only way to go, we're looking for something a little more wearable, and the barrel leg manages to take the classic straight leg and up the volume. The fit is traditionally high-waisted, curving through the leg to be widest at the knees, before tapering in again at the ankle. Style Notes: When it comes to jeans, high-waisted jeans are the secret weapon to confidence. We all know the discomfort of an ill-fitting waistband that cuts your tummy in two, but when an ultra high-rise pair hit just right, they nip in at the waist and create an enviable hourglass, while the length of denim draws the eye down making legs look even longer too. What's not to love? Whether a kick flare or straight leg fit, Levi's led the charge with last year's clever "ribcage" jean, and whether you're wearing a cosy cardigan or an oversized shirt, a high waist is perfect for tucking in tops.

Style Notes: Clumsy eaters and accident prone readers, avert your eyes now. Along with the pastels and prints we've come to love and expect from spring trends are palette cleansing white, cream, and ecru jeans, light enough to wear throughout summer too. If you hear white denim and your first thought is "skin-tight-see-through-jeans", I assure you, the answer is far more stylish. The coolest jeans now are loose or wide-leg, and come in cream coloured, thick cotton that immediately looks luxe when worn with slouchy knits and comfortable flats.

6. ACID-WASH LOOSE LEG

Style Notes: It might be a Marmite trend, but love them or loathe them, acid wash jeans are once again making their presence felt. From 1960s California surf culture to the Noughties denim obsession (with a little ’80s punk scene thrown in for good measure) denim and distressed detailing go hand-in-hand, and if you want your jeans to look fashionably "lived in", the acid wash is the style for you. I love Kim Turkington's take on high/low dressing by pairing rough and ready jeans with a ladylike cardigan and shoes, but the Bally runway made the most of worn in, subtly bleached denim with slick leather and plenty of eyeliner.

"How can you not wear jeans?" This was easily the most common question I was asked in the early years of my career when—yes, you guessed it—I did not wear jeans. Looking back, I put it down to having never really having found the perfect pair. This was a time during which skinny jeans reigned and before straight-leg styles were as commonplace as they are now (if you can believe it!). Fast-forward eight years or so, and now I live in jeans; I'd say six out of the seven days in the week, you'll find me wearing a pair, and I'm always on the lookout for new ways to get my denim fix.

As synonymous with warm weather as a raffia bag or a swing dress, there's one thing you can always count on: when the weather warms, the streets in London, Paris and Milan will be flooded with stylish people in white-jeans outfits.

However, as a fashion editor (and self-proclaimed denim connoisseur), it's the one jeans colour I’ve always hesitated to embrace. I don’t know about you, but until now, I always thought white jeans felt a little cheap. No matter how many pairs I tried, they were always either sheer, unflattering or just didn't quite work for me overall, so over the years, I stuck to traditional blue and darker denim washes instead.

But recently, I’ve seen so many fashion people across Europe making white denim look incredibly chic and elegant. And so, when I stumbled across the perfect mid-rise, straight-leg pair of white jeans earlier this month after seeing all these stylish looks flood my feed, it felt like fate. These jeans made me realise something: it wasn't white denim in general that wasn’t working for me, it was the specific white jeans I was choosing. The super-skinny styles, popular years prior, were doing nothing for me. Trust me: the perfect pair of white jeans will enhance your outfit, keeping it looking polished and put-together rather than dated.

With this in mind, I’ve put my money where my mouth is and rounded up the white-jeans outfits that I think prove my point. These looks are perfect for now, but will also help you transition your wardrobe into autumn.

1. Blazer + Jeans + Suede Bag + Ballet Flats

Style Notes: I’ve found that styling white jeans is easiest when you stick to neutrals. In particular, a neutral blazer. The structure helps elevate the overall finish, whilst the versatile palette works with just about any shade, but looks especially sharp against crisp white denim. Take Olivia Miller’s look (above), for example: a structured, loose-fitting blazer, a simple top and ballet flats. Nothing groundbreaking (and if you’re a regular Who What Wear UK reader, you probably already own a version of each piece), but the white jeans tie it all together, making the outfit feel clean and considered.

2. Trench Coat + Jeans + Tank + Flip-Flops

Style Notes: For me, the best clothing colour trends (the ones I’m actually willing to invest in) are those that work year-round, and this couldn't be truer than with butter yellow Offering a playful dose of dopamine dressing without throwing off your whole ensemble, Marilyn's butter-yellow trench and bag (above) make her look and are one of the easiest ways to elevate white jeans.

Style Notes: Post-Copenhagen Fashion Week, my key takeaway was this: draped layering is in. Gone are the days of freezing for fashion, which is a bonus if, like me, you catch a chill at every given opportunity. Chloe Butler's flannel and bomber combo (above) leans into the trend in an elevated, wearable way. And whilst I can appreciate the creativity of layered dresses over jeans, I’m unlikely to dive into that version of the trend myself. Her look, finished with ballet flats in a similar tone, feels thoughtfully put together without trying too hard. The best part? This is another smart way to style white jeans using pieces already in your wardrobe.

4. Boat Shoes + Jeans + Jumper + Suede Bag

Style Notes: Another colour that makes white jeans feel incredibly stylish? Chocolate brown. This rich, earthy shade adds warmth and cosiness whilst remaining undeniably timeless. Paired with white jeans (as seen on Géraldine Boubli, pictured above), it creates a look that feels both chic and laid-back. Her choice of suede accessories (loafers and a matching bag) adds visual interest and a trending edge, keeping the outfit feeling fresh and relevant. It's exactly the kind of look I want to re-create once cooler days set in.

5. Suede Bomber + Jeans + Woven Bag

Style Notes: More suede? Yep. I’d be remiss not to give them an honourable mention when it comes to styling white jeans. With chic dressers everywhere leaning into boho-inspired pieces with modern finishes, a suede jacket is the perfect way to tap into the trend (I should know—I own a cropped version in the same shade). Amy Lefevere’s ensemble, at its core, is incredibly simple: a brown suede jacket, thong sandals, a white tank and a brown woven bag. Yet the pairing with white jeans gives the look that "oh, I just threw this on and still look effortlessly chic" polish I always crave, especially when I’m wiggling into my own white denim.

6. Cropped Trench + Jeans + Cardigan + Loafers

Style Notes: Everyone’s taking notes from Scandi style—especially when it comes to the cropped trench. After reaching virality at the end of last year, with styles from & Other Stories and Marks and Spencer selling out within days, the trend hasn’t slowed down. In fact, I’ve already started spotting pieces from brands like Gina Tricot and Damson Madder selling out fast (Damson Madder's trench is set to be restocked in early October).

As more of us prioritise functionality alongside style in our capsule wardrobes, the reversible trench has become the go-to update. It offers multiple looks at a fraction of the cost. Flip the belt? You’ve got a new silhouette. Turn it inside out? A completely different vibe. Or take a cue from Nina Jolley (pictured above) and roll the sleeves for added visual interest; proof that even the smallest tweak can make a big impact.

7. Pretty Top + Jeans + Pointed-Toe Heels

Style Notes: Delicate lace-detail tops have been everywhere this summer, but it’s not time to pack them away just yet. With a romantic, lingerie-inspired edge, the lace adds a playful touch. This summer in particular, I’m living in the good old-fashioned trouser and T-shirt look. It wins every time for me, as it’s an outfit I always feel good in. Comfort is definitely key for looking effortless, so I try to prioritise it in everything I wear. I’m currently teaming my look with some chunky sandals and a basket bag. When it’s really hot though, you’ll find me wearing anything linen.

My absolute summer essentials would have to include an investment white T-shirt, one that I adore and can wear year after year. A white oversize linen shirt is also on my list, and of course, a well-fitting pair of white trousers, which can be taken into autumn and winter as well. When it comes to dressing for summer, I always go for laidback pieces in ice cream tones, so anything fitting that bill will win me over.

As you can probably predict, my favourite pieces from the summer collection would have to include its white linen shirt (I’m wearing a size large) and cream crop trouser.
