If I’m being frank, I’m not one to traditionally stick to a "New Year’s resolution". I'm proudly Type B, so the phrase has often filled me with a sense of dread. However, this year I’m determined to make a change. With smaller lifestyle changes on my to-do list (make it to more than one reformer class a month, eat healthier—you get the gist), I must say the past two weeks have been pretty successful, for me at least. Having made it to a few 6 am(!) classes, a well-deserved reward was in order. So when the task of testing out every It girl's favourite workout brand, Alo Yoga, landed on my to-do list, it felt like cosmic timing.

Over the years, I’ve been somewhat sceptical of the allure of Alo. A staple of Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber's workout wardrobe (as well as every other chic celebrity and influencer on my feed), I’ve often wondered if these pieces are as life-changing as they're made out to be. Far from an emerging label, the LA-founded brand has been the go-to for the rich and famous since even before the athleisure boom during COVID-19. With its enviable invitation-only gyms, serene wellness experiences and exquisite custom colourways floating on a wave of virality, I’ve often wondered if I, too, could be an Alo girl.

With 10 years of 200-meter sprints under my belt, I’m a touch fussy when it comes to activewear. Constricting sports bras, ill-fitting leggings and unsuitable fabrics are struggles I know all too well, so deviating from my tried-and-true workout gear is something I rarely do.

So when I went to try on Alo's more recent collections, I was pleasantly surprised when I ended up wanting to take everything home. With sports bras ranging from £48 to £78 (there are some cashmere lounge bras, which are priced a tad higher) and leggings from £88 to £168, the brand veers slightly more on the expensive end of the activewear spectrum, which fans of the brand may justify by citing the functional materials chosen to withstand a range of motions whilst being soft to the touch. I stayed true to size throughout my try-on, choosing almost every piece in an S-M, and the trainers in UK 8.

1. Airbrush Heart Throb Set

My Review: When you think of Alo Yoga, the Airbrush Heart Throb brand leggings are probably the workout set which comes to mind. One of the brand's signature silhouettes, at its core, the design leans rather simplistic. Yet it's the distinctive contrast stitching flowing through the set in sculpting placements that sets this two-piece apart.

Starting with the sports bra, I was beyond impressed. With a gently scooped sweetheart neckline and low-back cut, it's the perfect shape for medium-intensity movement. The medium-level compressed Airbrush fabric held everything right and tight, whilst the soft elasticated underbust band contoured "the girls"; it really felt like a gentle second skin. I tried the wiggle test, a simple yet effective way of deciding whether a piece is big bust-friendly (I typically wear a 30 DD). Much to my surprise, it passed with flying colours. With slight movement, they were constricted, not restricted, and I was able to lean, bend and stretch with ease.

Onto the legging's, I was a touch disappointed. With a high-waisted, full-length finish, the texture of these leggings were reminiscent of the cotton Nike Pro's we all wore at secondary school. The medium compression fabric did nip and tuck (in a second skin type of way rather than a constricted blood flow type of way). However, when testing how they'd work during a 'work-out' (I'd settled on a few squats and star jumps) these leggings began to wiggle down my waist. In speaking to the sales assistant, he advised (if, like me, you fall between sizes, to size down). This will alleviate the dreaded roll or any excessive wiggle room you may have. However, I can't help feeling that had I received these sight unseen, I would have been left a little frustrated as the quality was not quite what I was expecting. Just a little tidbit before you take the plunge.

2. Airlift Line Up Set

My Review: If you’re an avid follower of celebrity culture, you’ve probably seen the Airlift Line Up set on your For You page at least once or twice. From Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber's best-friend post-workout coffee dates to Kaia Gerber and Bella Hadid's morning hikes, this Alo set is a favourite amongst L.A. It girls. Naturally, I was looking forward to testing it out for myself.

Unfussy in shape, it's the sheen-y, sculpting finish that attracts so much attention. Similar in shape to the Airbrush Heart Throb Bra (see above), the Airlift has a few distinctive features that make it stand out amongst other sports bras I've tried (and I've tried a lot).

With removable cups for added boob support, a functional hook-and-eye closure and skinny adjustable straps, this piece would withstand even the most intense HIIT workout. The flocked band adds visual interest, whilst the subtle contrasting colours make the bra look just that touch chicer. Slightly more compressed than the Airbrush, the Airlift bra flew through the wiggle test. With little to no movement in the bust region, you could easily complete an elbow crunch with no issues.

Now, the leggings are a little different. With sweetheart detailing on the back, they’re less sculpting and do far more heavy lifting than the Airlift. These leggings are super durable. With a snug, compressive fit, they handled my 10 (poorly executed) squats and five star jumps with ease. Somehow, I looked like a pumped gym-goer rather than the sweaty dishevelled mess who’d just tried on half the Alo store. Now, if that doesn’t say "wonder leggings", I don’t know what will.

3. Airbrush Better Together Bra + Accolade Straight Leg Sweatpant + Alo Runner

My Review: Anyone who knows me well knows that any outfit featuring a straight-leg tracksuit bottom is right up my street. And after all that compression fabric, I was craving comfort, so the Accolade Straight Leg Sweatpant felt like a godsend. Made from a sumptuous French terrycloth-cotton shell and fleece-lined on the inside, they really lived up to the hype. Think of these as your favourite trackies with a luxurious twist.

Now, even for someone who enjoys all things baggy and loose, these were gloriously oversized, so I’d advise you to size down. Grazing the floor on my 5'10" frame (if you’re under 5'5", they may well be far too long—just some food for thought), I paired them with the Airbrush Better Together Bra, and my perfect loungewear combination was created. These bottoms were one of my favourites of everything I tried on; I could see myself shrugging them on for a chilly London day or post-workout class.

Can we talk about the double-layered sports bra for a second? I initially grabbed it as a throw-on piece to try with the bottoms, but I was pleasantly surprised by just how elevated this sports bra looked. Leaning into the layering trend we're seeing everywhere in fashion right now, it felt super comfortable and gloriously supportive. I was secure yet unconstricted, and looked put-together yet pared-back. With only the yellow-and-white colourway available in-store, I placed an order for the black-and-white as I knew it was about to become my newest go-to loungewear piece.

Alongside tracksuit bottoms, trainers were on my hitlist. Whilst the Alo Sunset Sneakers remain a go-to for the fashion set, workout-wise, it was the Alo Runner I was interested in. Designed as a practical running trainer, these shoes have all the features of the perfect exercise shoe: lightweight to carry in a gym bag, a cushioned yet supportive heel, a breathable double-mesh layer to keep your toes cool during high-intensity workouts and springy soles to propel you when you need the extra energy halfway through a 5K. I tried my normal size, and even though one of my feet is slightly larger than the other, there was no pinching, squeezing or claustrophobic toes. I was very impressed.

It seems obvious to talk about activewear in January, but you know us, we like to give the people what they want. Fitness and January go together like peanut butter and jelly (or jam, if you’re as British as me). Whilst we’re certainly not saying that you need to exercise at the beginning of a new year, there’s no doubt that it’s a time that people feel inspired to make new habits.

This year I’ve tested Tala, an eco-conscious affordable activewear brand that uses recycled materials to create stylish, high performance essentials for different types of exercise. It's also the It brand I see on stylish London girls in every spin class I go to.

For reference, I’m 5ft 4, I’m a size 10-12, with a bigger bust. Usually, I’d wear a size M in tops and a S-M in bottoms, depending on the piece. I’m someone who exercises fairly regularly, loving HIIT classes that you find at F45, 1Rebel and Barry’s Bootcamp and the like. But as well as being someone who enjoys keeping fit, I'm a fashion girl at my core. By this I mean I still like serve even when sweating, squatting or even doing a burpee, so refuse to accept that sportswear has to be the least chic thing in your rotation. Actually, as someone who has been known to wear a flared legging to the office, and is partial to a quarter zip pullover, I'd consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to activewear pieces fit for wearing on and off the treadmill.

And with that, I tried on much of Tala's collection for 2026, and these four looks were the ones I loved most. These were my honest thoughts.

The Best Tala Pieces for 2026

1. Dayflex Wrap Flared Yoga Pant + Zip-Through Sports Jacket

My review: If you were to see me at the gym, there’s a 99% chance I’ll be wearing black. Classic and forever-cool, I feel my most comfortable in an all-black ensemble. Despite usually being an avid slim legging person, lately I’ve really enjoyed flared leggings, just as its a style I'm happy wearing out the office. These I've tried on are part of the new Dayflex range, in a 30’’ leg and size S, the length is absolutely perfect. As the name suggests, these have been designed for yoga, which I think they'd be great for. If you're more of a runner or enjoy spin class, I would recommend a slimmer silhouette, as, by definition and design, they're less streamlined and either flap in the breeze as you run, or can get caught in your bike pedals. In terms of fit, they’re a little tight around my waist, but I love how they look when I have top layered over the waistband.

The overlapping ‘V’ shape waistband sculpts my stomach slightly, which I love, and the high zip jacket in a M feels snug in the way that it’s supposed to. I could have gone up a size in both, but there’s nothing worse than baggy activewear, so I’m happy with how these feel. Special shout out to the square neck sports bra and tank top, which snatches and lifts my upper body. I’m a 34E, and am wearing a size M bra and top, so if you have a bigger bust like me, and don't want a huge cleavage, I'd recommend sizing up.

2. Dayflex Wrap Legging + Cocoon Zip Through Hoodie

My review: As you can probably tell from the selection of items I've chosen to style in these four looks, I'm not usually one for vibrant colours. As mentioned, I wear black to workout most of the time, but the odd occasion I fancy venturing out of my all-black comfort zone, it's likely to be a shade of brown, cream or white. Tala's colour palettes are sumptuous and rich, offering earthy greens, buttermilk shades and, as shown here, a few tonal coffee hues. When testing the Dayflex Wrap High Waisted Legging, I went for mocha brown, and paired it with complementary tones like this hoodie in Oat Marl, and I'm really into how they work together.

But how do the pieces fit? The leggings, which are an icon for the brand, I was really impressed by. Cleverly designed with a sweetheart overlapping 'V' shape waistband, they sit perfectly on the waist and ensure comfort even when doing core exercises like crunches (which I find isn't always the case). I had the full length size, and they are slightly too long, so I'd recommend getting the 7/8 style if you're on the shorter side.

The hoodie fits exactly like its name suggests, like a cocoon. I really like this silhouette, and honestly have't tried one like this before: slim and cropped on the waist, but with these balloon-like arms and large hood, it's really hitting the mark in terms of being sweats with a subtle difference. It's also an incredibly soft cotton.

I'd also like to call out the sports bra which isn't pictured, the Dayflex Bandeau sports bra, which I styled in Americano. As someone with a bigger bust, I have to say Tala's bras probably aren't supportive enough for me to do high intensity training in them, but this one particularly is great for lower impact workouts, and just felt great to wear. It also had adjustable straps on the back help you get the best fit for your size, which I often find is overlooked with basic activewear bras.

3. Dayflex Capri Legging + 365 Boat Neck Top

My review: This is probably my favourite look of all four, simply because I know I'd wear each piece outside of the gym. I've long been looking for a simple boat neck top for everyday, and this is a great option for work, to work-out. I don't normally love a tight-tight top, often feeling a little exposed, but there's something about Tala's compressed fit pieces that make me feel good about an ultra-slim silhouette. I think with this top specifically, it's the extra thick fabric, which feels more like a warm hug than a way to reveal more than I want. This being said, I do worry that this extra thick fabric will make me quite warm, but for hiking in winter, or a gentle stretch session, this would be perfect.

Now let's talk about the leggings. Full disclosure, I am a capri legging addict. Despite this shorter length being a little passé for a decade or so in activewear trends, I've noticed that it's really making a comeback lately. The deep waistband sits at the perfect spot on my waist, right on the tummy-button, which feels quite '90s and chic. Most capri styles I find have a small split on each hem at the side, but I think not having this (like these) is much neater. I also love their seamless design, which makes them feel less like activewear in their aesthetic. Personally, I would rather wear these for lower impact exercises, where I don't need to wear a bulky pair of running trainers, but can switch it for a slimmer trainer silhouette, or even my Nike Air Rifts like pictured here.

4. Dayflex Floaty Shorts + Elevated T-Shirt

My review: This is honestly one the softest, best-fitting t-shirts I've ever tried on. And as you can imagine with my job, I have tried and tested a lot of t-shirts in my time! Usually, I wouldn't wear a standard cotton t-shirt for the gym, just because it's less breathable and has a heavier weight than those options made in recycled polyester. However, when paired with the shorts, this is the type of thing I'd choose to wear for padel or tennis, which come the spring months, I tend to play every fortnight. I love this soft grey colour as I'm terrible at keeping white, white, but the downside to grey, as many of us know too well, is that it shows the sweat, so I would say this is best for less active sports, or an option for a throw-on tee for the post-class coffee or juice. In terms of its fit and shape, it's slightly oversized, without being overbearing. The arms are a little more fitted, and the ribbed crew neck feels thick and sturdy.

As this look for me was less about my usual work-out routine, and more to showcase the extra pieces Tala offer, I wanted to show two very different options for the bottom half. The Dayflex Floaty Shorts are definitely the more sporty option: they're loose and oh-so comfortable, so perfect for those that like to avoid tighter silhouettes like cycling shorts and leggings. I love the zip-up pocket, this is a minor detail, but I don't think I've ever tried a pair of sports shorts that have a zip-up hidden pocket before. Usually it's a secret flap, which isn't great for valuable items (airpods case, phone, jewellery etc). So this is definitely something that impressed me.

On top of these, I styled this look with the Everyday Tailored Trousers, which I was also most impressed by. Not many activewear brands do fashion or loungewear pieces so well. The elasticated waist gives the comfort, but the wide leg and pinstripe design feels very on point to sartorial trends of late. I would definitely wear these in the office, at the weekend et al, but it goes without saying that they're not so fit for exercise.

With the new year now in full swing, I'm keen to set some personal goals, kick-start fresh habits and actually set aside time to work on myself. Getting back into a new gym routine is high on my priority list, as not only do I want to keep my heart healthy and my body feeling toned, but I also love the feeling of endorphins I get from a good, sweaty workout. I typically mix things up with cardio, weights, floor work and yoga for full-body conditioning, but admittedly, I did fall off the wagon a little over the festive period. It's time to get back to business.

To get me into the mood for my fresh start, I wanted to try on some new gymwear—pieces that feel fresh, stylish and practical. My current rotation of workout gear feels a little tired, and so I was excited to check out the latest collection from H&M Move. I've heard great things about it from friends, collegues and fellow gym-goers, so giving it a real spin for the first time felt well overdue.

H&M is one of the biggest players on the high street and is constantly at the forefront of trends, as well as offering solid wardrobe staples and affordable items which are deceptively expensive-looking. The brand has been designing its workout-friendly Move line for several years, and this season, the collection is inspired chiefly by hot Pilates, infrared saunas and cold plunges (all of which I'm looking to introduce to my weekly exercise sessions in 2026). Aesthetically, this collection is all about '90s minimalism: clean lines, sculpting silhouettes, smoothing fabric and pared-back colours (hello, ink black, ivory white, soft sand and pomegranate), powered by a new fabric H&M is pioneering: SculptMove.

“This collection is about glowing from the inside out, facing the future with purpose and power and feeling excited. We wanted to channel all the energy, anticipation and transformation that comes with starting a new year into pieces that will make you feel and look like the best version of yourself," says Marie Fredros, head of design at H&M Move.

For context, I am 5'8" and typically take a size 12, medium or large, which suits my height, shape and curves. I tried on everything in a Medium, which felt spot-on and true to size thanks to the compressive nature of both the sports tops and leggings. The H&M Move collection is offered from XS to XXL, which, according to the size and fit guide, should benefit those looking for pieces from a UK 6 to a 22, catering to a wide range of body types and needs. I tried on pieces in colour-coordinated combos (which is how I like to style my activewear) and gave each a thorough review, providing pros and cons to help you decide if they'll work for you.

The Best H&M Move Pieces for 2026, Tried and Reviewed by a Fashion Editor

1. Sculptmove Sports Jacket + Vest Top + Leggings + Waterproof Jewellery

My Review: I'm not typically one for an all-white look (I'm a coffee drinker, after all), but this soft ivory-toned set felt like exactly what I need for 2026: a clean slate, fresh start and clear perspective for my workout goals. The base of the look is comprised of H&M Move's new signature Sculptmove pieces, including a vest top and leggings and finished with a bodycon Sports Jacket. The fabric feels buttery soft on the skin, and each piece promises to be moisture-wicking, quick-dry and breathable, which is necessary when getting a real sweat on.

I loved the hug-like fit of each of the items. Leggings that roll down and sports bras that don't compress my chest adequately are my biggest ick when it comes to activewear, and these pieces felt like they wouldn't fall into that category. The jacket has a slim-fit shape and short, stand-up collar, as well as full-length arms with thumb-holes for that extra bit of comfort and coverage on chilly days.

To complete the outfit (and for the others you'll see below), I opted for long white ankle socks (from a five-pack) and a pair of chunky white-and-silver trainers. As far as high-street trainers go, these felt premium and comfortable, but truthfully, I know I would normally opt for a tried-and-tested sports-specialist brand for a sneaker that can go the distance. These will get you to your morning classes just fine, however.

Cleverly, H&M is now offering waterproof jewellery made of 100% stainless steel, so you can still add a hint of shine to your 'fit without the worry of it tarnishing or turning your skin a funky shade of green. The simple huggie hoop earrings and snake-chain necklace are a highlight. All in all, I really liked the clean lines and fresh hue of this full look, and I feel like it would be perfect for Pilates and yoga sessions.

2. Loose Fit Sports Hoodie + Sculptmove Medium Support Sports Bra + High-Waisted Leggings

My Review: For those seeking a punchy, bright and head-turning gym ensemble, might I suggest this fuchsia-pink set? Admittedly, the hoodie itself is an ever-so-slightly different shade from the sports bra and leggings (the hoodie is a few shades lighter), so this is worth noting if you were seeking something truly monochromatic. Otherwise, you can opt for the Sculptmove tee or sports jacket in the same hue for a head-to-toe pink moment.

The hoodie feels warm, chunky and soft, the cropped fit is modern and flattering and I love the classic kangaroo pocket and loose feel; it's easy to whip over your head pre and post-workout.

In terms of the sports bra, it's a classic cropped fit and has medium support with a round neckline and removable cups, which can be taken out with ease depending on preference. The leggings have a high-waisted cut, which I liked for that extra touch of coverage on my abdomen. Hot pink was not on my 2026 bingo card, but for the greyest days of winter, this is a nice dose of dopamine dressing.

3. Water-Repellent Padded Sports Jacket + Sculptmove Sports Vest Top + High-Waisted Leggings + Weights

My Review: Next up, I gave this tonal taupe look a whirl. I do love a look that feels like an extension of my everyday capsule wardrobe, and so this neutral but modern colourway is something I naturally gravitated towards.

I tried on the Sculptmove Sports Vest Top and matching High-Waisted Leggings (having already loved them in the ivory colourway), and teamed them with the corresponding Water-Repellent Padded Sports Jacket, which was a true match in colour (a win!). There's even a two-pack of wrist weights in the same beige tone, so you can add a bit of resistance to your workout, stylishly.

The jacket was a favourite of mine, as the light padding and weather-repellent fabric would mean I have no excuse not to step outside and take that short walk to the gym, whatever Mother Nature throws at me. The square cut, funnel neck, cropped cut and discreet side pockets make it look ultra-modern, timeless and chic, and it will effortlessly pair with infinite leggings and cycling-short looks. This is the outfit I adored the most. It felt like the most "me", and the dark, biscuit-y shade will stand up to frequent wear, sweat and weekly wash cycles.

4. Sculptmove Sports Top + Cycling Shorts + Tote Bag

My Review: Last but not least, I tested this sleek, minimal and dare I say quite sexy two-piece in black. Comprised of the Sculptmove Sports Top with long sleeves and the Sculptmove Sports Cycling Shorts, this ensemble would be just the ticket for a dance class or gentle weights session.

The long-sleeve cut of the top features thumb holes (quite '90s, no?) and a chic square neckline. The hem is neither cropped nor long, but right in the middle, which means it teams perfectly with the cycle shorts, which have a regular cut, if you're comfortable showing a flash of midriff. Going back to the top, it does, in fact, have bust support, so you might not need a bra too (depending on how much bust support you require).

Black is, of course, a fail-safe shade for both curated day-to-day wardrobes and athleisure, as it pairs with everything and can withstand stains, sweat and the perils of constant daily wear. I'm saving this set for warmer days when I dare to get the pins out. I also checked out the frosted-white tote bag, which was easy to throw over my shoulder, apt for holding all of my sweaty items post-shower and even large enough for a towel and water bottle, too. Ideal!

When it comes to the world of sport, style isn’t something that typically quantifies someone’s performance. But, when you look at someone like Serena Williams wearing a denim mini skirt at the US Open or Sha’Carri Richardson sprinting around the track in a full set of acrylic nails, you can’t help but pay attention. It’s precisely this reason why I’m keeping a closer eye on the pieces I wear when I’m working out. I’m not an elite athlete, let alone a novice one. (My exercise regimen starts with hot girl walks and ends with bi-weekly reformer Pilates classes.) But should that hinder me from looking considered and, dare I even say, chic when sweating?

Adanola is a viral activewear brand that shares this sentiment exactly. Founded over a decade ago, the Manchester-based label has quickly become one of the biggest go-to spots for sports bras and leggings in the UK for its softer approach to gym gear. Amongst exceptionally comfortable materials that offer both stretch and support, refined cuts that come in a wide range of sizes and a loyal base of celebrity adherents that include Kendall Jenner, you’ll notice Adanola thrives in creating modern silhouettes that are rendered in beautifully tonal shades.

Those who turn to brands like Leset for well-crafted and thoughtfully coloured wardrobe fundamentals and Aeyde for pared-back and intentionally textured footwear will find a kindred spirit in Adanola’s use of pigment. Instead of gaudy or lurid tones you’d typically find activewear offered in, you’ll notice Adanola is set apart by its minimalistic shapes rendered in polished, trend-forward and neutral tones—mocha brown, dark cherry, eden green, graphite grey and slate blue (which has become chic again thanks, in part, to Isabella Rossellini’s scene-stealing role in Conclave). As a proponent of ‘90s fashion, it’s this characteristic that really drew me towards the brand. I'll say it now, it's basically The Row of activewear.

I’m not someone who typically finds myself endeared to finicky design elements like multiple zips, cross-body straps or waist-cinching boning, so having a brand that excludes these pieces from its offerings whilst maintaining an air of effortless elegance is really important to me as a consumer. Better still, the mutable palette means I can easily pull together a sophisticated workout outfit without thinking too hard. (Because an hour class is strenuous enough, let alone expending energy styling a look!)

What’s more, these are styles refined enough to wear from a mat class to my monthly brunch catch-up with my girlfriends. The fabric is designed to be moved in, which is great for days when I need to run errands after exercising, but still want to look smoothed and sculpted whilst doing so.

With all these factors in mind, it felt entirely right that I turned to Adanola to replenish my athleisure collection for 2026. But how did the brand live up to the hype? Ahead, I break down the pieces that piqued my interest most, review the brand’s best sellers and share my honest thoughts on whether the brand is worth the price tag. (But as my favourite instructor would tell you, it most certainly is, given how regularly I wear these styles.)

My Review: Basics are the building blocks of any great ensemble. Once you’ve nailed the fundamentals, anything you layer on top of it will simply sing. When we’re talking about activewear, these flourishes usually consist of a pair of trending trainers and a functional bag like the bumbag-esque Pocket bag from Miu Miu. Still, the point remains.

As the name suggests, these pieces are the superlative style in Adanola’s entire collection and are designed for “doing everything, every day”, as the brand says on its website. Here, I’m pictured wearing both in a size medium. For context, I’m usually a UK 10 and stand at around 5’5” high, so you’ll typically see me cuffing, hemming or folding most trouser hems. Such was the case for these leggings.

Though it’s something I’ve become accustomed to, I want to caveat this for those who typically take their standard size, as I’ve found a few mixed reviews when it comes to leg lengths from my fellow editors who have also tested the brand. And, because Adanola doesn’t have any retail stores, you really are stabbing in the dark when it comes to selecting the correct size, especially since there are three lengths (regular, tall and ⅞) and eight sizes (XXS - XXXL) to choose from. In saying that, they do fit really well through the calf and thigh and also offer a compressing sensation that truly makes you feel more athletic.

As for the top, I didn't necessarily love the short sleeve as much as the leggings. As someone with a bigger bust, I found the t-shirt to be quite constrictive, which is saying something considering the fabric is designed to be skin-tight. I also found the seam along the shoulder to be cropped at an awkward angle, which led to a really stiff and strained feeling around the top of my bicep. I would’ve enjoyed it more if the tee had been cut more generously, as the fabric did sit quite heavily on top of my skin because of the taut finish.

2. Ultimate Wrap-Over Leggings + Ultimate Square Neck Bra

My Review: Another thing I really like about Adanola is that the brand really considers its designs. Instead of boasting superfluous design elements like a built-in holder for your phone, because whoever uses that slip that always appears on the side of leggings anyway, or panels that are designed to add an element of sex appeal where it’s not required, the shapes it puts out are intentional in working with your body’s natural curves and aiding movement.

The Ultimate Wrap-Over Leggings and Square-Neck Sports Bra are perfect examples of this. On the latter, I’m wearing a wrap top over it, as I found the neckline to be a little too risqué for my taste. (Cleavage at a 9 AM gym class is not what I had in mind for my activewear upgrade!) However, I did find the top to still be really supportive, despite my bigger chest size, and still kept my boobs sitting really nicely throughout the duration of a class.

The leggings also boasted this undulating curve, which is great for those who want to display a glint of skin. You’d think this wavy hemline would mean you’d be constantly adjusting throughout your workout, but I never found myself reaching to pull the band up once. Better still, it added an extra layer of support around my tummy, which was great for perfecting my form in tabletop positions.

My Review: The intersection of sports and style is always one ripe for innovation. Think: On’s CloudTec® technology for better strides, Nike’s Dri-FIT technology for sweat-wicking runs and even the way Adidas adopted the three-stripes as a signature branding tool. Now, Adanola has entered this cannon with a revolutionary new category launch: Impact.

Like Ultimate, this range is designed specifically for movement in mind. The main point of difference, as the name hints at, is the fact that these pieces are made for higher-intensity workouts in mind. Think: HIIT classes, spin, interval training and boxing. These pieces are made unique because of their bonded edges, contoured segments, a smoothed finish, and breathable panels. Intentionally seamless for a sleeker and more dynamic silhouette, the brand promises the new range “provides support through every rep and set, adapting effortlessly to every motion”.

Whilst I’ve always found Adanola to be supportive of my lower-intensity Pilates classes, this new Impact range certainly hit the mark for me on days when I wanted to break out into a bigger sweat. Thankfully, the fabric still felt buttery soft and lightweight, despite being compressive and contouring. I wore the Seamless Racer Back Bra in an XL, and although it was a bit low-cut, I enjoyed the fact that it had thick adjustable straps that could alter the level of support. I did think the buckle was slightly clunky and not as chic as the options available, so this is something to consider, as I regret not getting the tank top to layer over.

The leggings were really lovely, but I did have a slight gripe when my sock line showed underneath, a factor that comes down to their second-skin finish. The real star of the show was this ultra-cuddly fleece. With a lined interior and incredibly comfortable texture, this is the kind of thing that will make your weekend dog walks and early morning trots to get a takeaway coffee all the more enticing.

I write this fresh from lamenting my achy muscles to my colleagues. Between reaquainting myself with treadmill sessions and topping up my Spotify with particularly peppy playlists, January’s annual fitness renaissance is in its stride. My Review: I was instantly drawn to the thumb-hole detailing on this black quarter-zip running top. There’s something inherently comforting about cocooning your hands—especially when you’re bracing yourself for a cold-weather run. Unsurprisingly, this was the piece I walked out of M&S with. Beyond the thumb holes, I loved the depth of the zip, which can be pulled down to the chest to allow for airflow mid-run. And while jet black might not be the most exciting shade, it’s the colour I gravitate towards time and again—activewear included.

Paired with M&S’s buttery-soft wrap-waist yoga leggings, this duo feels like a reliable foundation for easing back into a fitness routine. Unlike glossy, scuba-style leggings, these have a softer, more matte finish—so that I’d happily style them with knee-high boots on off-duty days.

And if your TikTok For You Page is anything like mine, you might be inundated with Oura Ring reviews right now, and wondering if it's worth buying one for yourself.

I've always been interested in wearable health trackers, but, to be honest with you, I think a lot of smart watches are pretty ugly-looking. So when I came across the sleek Oura Ring, with its minimalistic and discreet design, I knew this was one health tracker that I wanted to wear. So, I decided to put it to the test over three months, and I have a lot of thoughts about it—both good and bad.

What Is the Oura Ring and How Does It Work?

The Oura Ring is a wearable health tracker, which tracks and monitors lots of different health markers, such as sleep, activity, stress, heart health and your menstrual cycle. It measures your vitals using a range of sensors to track biometrics such as heart rate, blood oxygen and body temperature, amongst others.

It pairs with the Oura app, which can give you a snapshot of your general health whilst allowing you to take a closer look at more detailed metrics if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of your health data.

My Experience of the Oura Ring 4

I've been wearing my Oura Ring 4 for three months now, so I've really put the health tracker through its paces. Firstly, if you're considering an Oura Ring, I'd highly recommend ordering the sizing kit (free with purchase on the Oura site or redeemable against the ring from other retailers, including Boots), which allows you to try on the different sizes before ordering your ring. For the most accurate date, it's recommended to wear your ring on your index, middle or ring finger.

I was between sizes 7 and 8, and if you also find yourself somewhere in the middle, Oura recommends sizing down. It's better to have a tighter fit to ensure the ring accurately measures your vitals and doesn't fly off your hand (and when you're spending hundreds of pounds, you want to avoid that!) I opted for size 7, which comfortably fits both my middle and index fingers.

Readiness

When you wake up and check the Oura app, you'll be given a "Readiness" score. This takes into account how well you slept, the previous day's activity and other biometric data (such as heart rate, body temperature, and heart rate variability) to formulate a score out of 100, which gives you an indication of how ready your body is that day. It's a helpful snapshot to see how much you should push yourself. A high readiness score means you might be able to go harder with your workouts, for example, whereas a lower readiness score encourages you to prioritise rest when you can.

It gives you a top-line overview as well as more detailed metrics, flagging any areas that may need attention, with the option to go more in-depth if you want. In my case (as you can see above), my HRV—one of the markers that measures recovery—needs attention. Lots of things can affect it, including stress, illness or intense exercise. In this instance, I'd been unwell, so I was prioritising rest to bounce back.

Sleep Tracking

A core part of forming your daily "Readiness" score is how well you slept, and the Oura Ring tracks an incredible amount whilst you snooze. It's able to measure not just how much sleep you had, but the percentage of your total sleep you spent in the different stages, including REM (often associated with dreaming), deep sleep and light sleep. It can also detect naps during the day.

Additionally, it will tell you at which times your ring detected movement during the night, as well as any incidents where your breathing was affected. It will also alert you to any "sleep debt", which can help keep you accountable for getting enough shut-eye each night. After 90 days of wearing your Oura Ring, it will also gather data to work out your sleep chronotype, which can determine whether you're a night owl or a morning person.

I like that you can add tags to each evening to help log patterns or figure out what may be affecting your sleep, such as eating a later meal, drinking a coffee late in the day or experiencing illness, which can all negatively affect your sleep. On the flipside, you can add behaviours that positively affect your sleep (like pre-bed yoga or having a warm bath). It really helps to give a good overview of what works—and doesn't work—for you.

I've been really trying to prioritise sleep, and it's showing up in my sleep scores, which are consistently around the 80/100 mark, so it's motivating to see my efforts pay off. Although I definitely noticed how illness and stress also affected my quality of sleep on days when it wasn't so high.

Activity

The Oura Ring also tracks your activity, but you don't have to be a regular gym-goer to benefit from it. It captures daily activity from doing chores around the house (turns out that even vacuuming counts) or walking. But it's also good at detecting other types of exercise like running, dancing and lots more (it can even pick up if you're skiing, doing martial arts or playing basketball). It's also waterproof, so you can wear it whilst swimming.

It will also tell you the calories burned, your step count and what heart rate zones you're reaching when exercising, from Zone 0 (the lowest heart rate) all the way through to Zone 5 (full-throttle exercise that pushes you to your absolute limits). I found this insight helpful, as whilst I do a lot of walking and reformer Pilates, my heart rate wasn't reaching Zones 3, 4 or 5 very often, so it's encouraged me to incorporate more cardio into my weekly routine.

One thing I will say is that I noticed that my Oura Ring never picked up my reformer Pilates workouts (mostly because the movements are slower and less noticeable than, say, running, where your body is moving more regularly). As this is my primary form of exercise, this oversight is annoying, though you can manually add your workouts if something hasn't been tracked by the ring automatically. Amusingly, when I was drying my hair with a hot brush one evening, the Oura Ring detected it as a workout.

I also like that the Oura app encourages me to stretch my legs if I've been sitting at my desk for too long (guilty), so it helps me stay active in even small ways, which all add up over time.

Stress and Resilience

Tracking my stress levels has been the most eye-opening part of wearing my Oura Ring. Measuring your heart metrics, it can detect when you're feeling calm and zen (in the Relaxed and Restored modes) as well as when you're feeling more switched or stressed (during Engaged and Stressed modes).

It's interesting to see how they can fluctuate during different days and what activities bring on stress or restoration. Not all stress time is bad (Oura says activities that bring about excitement or enjoyment can also be logged as stressful; equally, a stressful work day or a bad commute can also be stressful), but it can be helpful to see the amount of stress versus rest you're experiencing day-to-day, and see in real-time how well your body bounces back.

My ring had detected some moderate cumulative stress, and whilst my body was showing signs of solid resilience, it's been needing more attention lately, so I've been looking at working to reduce my cortisol levels. The app gives you suggestions on ways to relax and unwind, and you can access in-app meditations and see in real time how these activities help to bring your body back to a more relaxed state of mind. It's helped me prioritise both mental and physical rest and make active steps to improve my resilience. We all know that behaviours like meditation and yoga are good for the mind and body, but it's another thing being able to see their effects in personalised data—I'm much more likely to actually do it when I can see positive results.

Cycle Tracking

Another feature of the Oura Ring is being able to track your menstrual cycle. It does so by measuring your body temperature, helping to predict not only when your period is due, but when you're ovulating as well. It's been extremely accurate in predicting the start of my period, and it's helpful to know where I'm at in my cycle each month, when I may need to rest more during the luteal phase or when I might have more energy for activities in the follicular phase. If you want to conceive, it will also predict your optimum window for conception.

Out of all of the features, I found this one to be the most underwhelming, to be honest. Whilst you can log how heavy your period is, there is no way to tag other symptoms (as of yet) that you might have during your cycle that other period-tracking apps have. So I favour apps like Stardust (which can be connected to the Oura Ring) to log and track other symptoms for my menstrual cycle health.

Heart Health

You can also see data on your heart health, and this goes hand-in-hand with the stress tab to see how much restorative time you get versus stress, as well as your current heart rate, sleeping range and activity range, which give you a picture of your cardiovascular health. I was delighted to see that my heart health age was lower than my actual age, and it motivates me to keep up with exercise and manage my stress.

Symptom Radar

A great feature is the Symptom Radar. By measuring your biometrics, it can detect if something is straining your body or if you're coming down with something. It flagged when I was unwell; however, it took a couple of days into my illness for the ring to register it. That being said, it helped me to prioritise rest until I was better. When the symptom radar detects something, you can turn on "Rest Mode", which will pause your activity goal. You can also turn on rest mode for jet lag, illness or injuries to help you prioritise rest and recovery. It's helped me to be kinder to myself on days when rest is needed.

Other Features

There are lots of other nice features of the Oura Ring. It includes the Advisor, which is an AI-style chat where you can ask it just about anything about your health metrics, or ask for advice on how to create a good bedtime routine, ways to manage stress and more. You can always refer back to older conversations, too.

The Oura app can also be linked with other health apps, including period-tracking apps like Natural Cycles and Stardust, fitness apps like Strava and The Sculpt Society, nutrition apps such as Cronometer and Zero, as well as apps like Headspace and Open to support meditation and breathwork.

Another cool feature is being able to take a photo of your meal, and the Oura app can identify foods and tell you how nutritious they are. I haven't used it all that often, perhaps because I was testing during the festive season, where I didn't need an app to tell me that cheese and biscuits aren't a highly nutritious meal. But it's nice to have.

Lastly, you can also consolidate your data into trends and reports. This can be helpful for looking back on previous weeks or months, or supplying data such as your cycle or sleep to medical professionals. Plus, if you happen to lose your ring, you can trace it on the Oura app.

The Verdict

Having worn my Oura Ring over the past few months, I can honestly say that I can't imagine being without it now. There is so much I love about it, and the more I wear the ring, the more insights I get about my health. But there are also a few things I dislike.

The Pros: I have a much better understanding of my health, particularly with my sleep and stress levels, and I like that the Oura app provides actionable tips to improve them. You can get down into the really nitty-gritty with the data if you want to, but it's not forced upon you. Upon opening up the app, you can see at a glance how your sleep, stress and activity fare to help inform how you want to approach your day.

A nice surprise of reviewing it has been that my activity levels are much higher than I thought (even housework all adds up!), and it's helping me to manage my stress better and prioritise a good sleep routine.

The design is also sleek and comfortable to wear, and is much more discreet than other wearable health trackers. Plus, the range of colours means you'll find one to match your jewellery or style. There really is a wealth of information at your fingertips, and it gets better and more accurate the longer you wear your ring.

Whilst some reviews have noted dwindling battery life, this isn't something I've experienced yet. I only need to charge it once every 5-6 days, and a full charge takes 30 mins.

The Cons: The main con is the initial investment, which, depending on the colour you buy, can set you back nearly £500. On top of that, you'll also need to commit to a £6 monthly fee to access all the features on the Oura app. Personally, I think this ought to be included as standard. However, it does mean that any updates or new features will be available to you without having to buy a new Oura Ring.

I should also mention that my ring has become quite scratched, so I'd recommend buying a cover for it and wearing the ring on your non-dominant hand to reduce damage, or removing it for activities like weight-lifting. Lastly, I wish that the ring would pick up workouts like Pilates better; however, it had no trouble identifying other exercises, so I'm willing to see past this.

The Final Verdict: If you're someone who is really into tracking your health and wellness, you'll love the Oura Ring—especially if, like me, you're really nerdy about tracking all your health vitals.

Of course, this type of investment is a nice-to-have purchase, and there's definitely an argument that you don't need a tracker to tell you slept badly when your body knows you've had a bad night's sleep. It's sensible not to obsess over the data too much and stay in tune with your body, but I do feel the Oura Ring has made a positive difference in my health habits.

However, with all the details and insights the Oura Ring has provided me over the past few months, it's become a valuable part of my daily routine and has actively helped me to improve many areas of my health. And for that, I think it's a worthwhile investment.

According to Holland & Barrett's new-year trend report, the global gut-health market is expected to surpass $90 billion by 2030, thanks to increased awareness of the topic. I was keen to speak to the brand to learn more about this and see how I can start caring for my gut more next year.

"2026 is the year we’ll give our bodies balance as we continue to learn and understand how the entire gut microbiome may influence our body, from our brain and mood to our skin."

If you have prolonged gut issues, always speak to your doctor for support to rule out any underlying health conditions. However, if you don't have any potentially concerning symptoms, in terms of caring for your gut in your everyday life, Glover says it's important to eat a balanced diet, focusing on whole foods. "The gut bacteria thrive on variety, through plant foods like vegetables, whole grains and legumes, as well as fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir or kimchi." While I don't consider myself a naturally sporty person, I do like to get moving throughout my day to counter the hours I spend typing away at my desk. Wellness trends are a funny thing, aren't they? If I had to sum up what the word "wellness" means, my answer would probably involve eating your fruit and veg and moving your body from time to time. However, the definition of wellness can look different to everybody. For example, when I asked my colleague what wellness meant to her, she said that it was taking time out of her day to do what makes her feel good (which turns out to be a soak in the tub with the best bath products and a good book). But, truth be told, it's not always that simple.

You probably don't need me to tell you that wellness is having a moment right now. In fact, research from the Global Wellness Institute reveals that the wellness market is worth 26% more than it was pre-pandemic, and is now roughly four times larger than the global pharmaceutical industry. And with a flurry of new wellness hacks and trends being thrown at us, there is currently a lot of noise around what we should be doing to be as healthy as possible—and I don't know about you, but I'm finding it quite overwhelming. All I have to do is open Instagram or TikTok and I'm met with 5am morning routines, complicated smoothie recipes, gruelling workouts, in-depth skincare routines and "75 day hard" challenges that make fitness boot camps look like a walk in the park. As someone who works 9-5 and likes to get as much rest as possible in between, it all feels a little too much.

So, when I was asked to look into this year's biggest wellness trends, I had one aim: to cut through the noise and only give my time to the trends that are actually doable. I have reached out to a wide range of experts to get their honest opinions on what they think people will genuinely be prioritising this year—and from the look of it, everyone else seems to be craving a more simplistic approach, too.

Below, I've rounded up the wellness trends that are set to dominate in 2025, and luckily for us all, there's not a 75 day hard challenge in sight...

The 7 Biggest Wellness Trends to Know About in 2025

1. Better Together

Is it just me, or does it feel like is joining run clubs right now? It seems that we are all wanting a bit more social interaction when it comes to working out, and according to the experts, this sense of community will become even more prevalent as the year goes on.

"We’ve seen a significant surge in applicants citing connection and community as their top reasons for joining The Club by Bamford," says C.J. James-Leake, head of memberships at Bamford's luxury wellness club, one of the most exclusive and talked-about UK wellness spots of the past year. "Many members have relocated to the Cotswolds post-pandemic, drawn by a shared desire to connect with nature and be part of a like-minded community. However, this trend isn’t limited to rural areas. In cities, group fitness experiences are reshaping the wellness landscape—from running clubs to Hyrox competitions and social sauna sessions. Group workouts are fast becoming the new personal training for 2025."

And the reasons why we're turning to human connection in our wellness routines doesn't just make sense from a community perspective, but from a scientific one, too. Simon Salter, co-founder of health and wellness brand Dirtea, agrees. "Ancient tribes knew it—our survival wasn’t just about strength, but about unity. They depended on collective care for protection, resource sharing, and emotional warmth. Modern neuroscience backs what our ancestors lived by, showing how genuine human connection releases oxytocin, a powerful hormone that strengthens bonds, reduces stress, and boosts emotional wellbeing—proving we’re wired to thrive together."

As explained by Salter, modern life has fractured these bonds. "The rise of extreme individualism and the addictive grip of social media—doom scrolling, constant comparison—has pulled us away from what truly matters. We've traded real connection for surface-level validation, leaving many craving something deeper and more authentic. We weren’t built to do life alone. We’re stronger together which is why wellness spaces are thriving. They remind us of what it means to be truly human: connected, supported and empowered to grow."

2. The Night Shift

As you might have guessed already, I'm not much of an early riser. So the idea of an in-depth 5am morning routine is pretty much my idea of hell. Therefore, I was delighted to hear that this year will be all about our nighttime routines. Yep, forget waking up at the crack of dawn, 2025 is about spending time winding down before bed to ensure we wake up feeling as fresh as possible.

"2025 will mark the rise of evening rituals eclipsing the humblebrag morning routine," says James-Leake. "Instead of focusing solely on how the day starts, the wellness-savvy will prioritise winding down to optimise sleep and set the tone for tomorrow. Expect meditation, breathwork, sleep retreats and digital wind-downs to dominate the conversation on how to rest to impress."

You might be asking yourself, why is winding down so important? Well as it turns out, it can have a huge impact on our sleep. "Winding down at night is crucial for your health because it prepares your body for restorative sleep, which is vital for maintaining overall well-being," says Jianne Jamil, founder and CEO of supplement brand, Diome. "As awareness of the importance of sleep continues to grow, people are likely to become more proactive in investing time and effort into building healthier night-time habits."

So, what can we actually do to help wind down at night? Jamil recommends a few simple steps such as dimming the lights before bed and avoiding screens an hour or two before going to sleep. "The blue light emitted by phones, computers and televisions can interfere with melatonin production, a hormone necessary for regulating sleep," she explains. Breathing techniques, meditation and going to bed at the same time every night can also help to maximise your sleep quality.

3. Its All in the Tech

With technology (especially when it comes to AI) seeping into all aspects of our lives, it's no surprise that it's having a profound effect on the wellness industry. "AI and machine learning will likely make personalised wellness plans more accessible than ever [in 2025]," says Jess Sepel, clinical nutritionist and founder of JSHealth.

"The demand for wellness apps has grown significantly over recent years and even projected to keep growing at a compound annual growth rate of [approximately] 15% from 2024 to 2029," adds Confidence Udegbue, VP of product at AI-based fitness and lifestyle coaching app Freeletics. "Users are increasingly looking for convenience and flexibility, whether it’s guided workouts, nutrition advice or mindfulness exercises, all available at their fingertips. Fuelling a new era in health and fitness, AI is changing the way we workout and recover." Before, this kind of information would have only been available via one-on-one coaching, but now we have everything at our fingertips.

And technological advancements aren't just helping with our fitness either. Take facials, for example. A wellness treatment that was once only available at clinics and spas, facials can now be achieved at home through at-home devices complete with apps that allow you to personalise your facial to suit your skin needs. "The future of beauty is all about personalisation, convenience and results—and apps are key to making that happen," says Melanie Simon, co-founder of at-home facial device, ZIIP. "Personalised treatments allow you to target specific concerns at the right time, whether it’s calming irritation, boosting brightness or lifting and firming. They also give you more control over long-term skin health."

As great as this technology is, it's important to consider the downsides. "One potential downside is that people might overly rely on algorithms without fully understanding their training data and how representative it is of unique needs or limits. This is why education and human expertise remain essential alongside AI-driven solutions," says Udegbue.

4. Fibre Is the New Protein

I think we all know the importance of protein in our diet by now. However, according to the experts, 2025 will bring about a larger focus on fibre and how much we are consuming on a daily basis.

"As we learn more about the gut-brain connection, fibre is taking centre stage for its incredible benefits," says Pilates By Bryony founder and Dior Beauty wellness expert, Bryony Deery. "From improved digestion to reduced inflammation, this nutrient is a game-changer for both physical and mental well-being. Even though protein is just as important than ever, I think we will be seeing a big focus on fibre-rich foods and snacks."

Government guidelines recommend that adults should be eating around 30g of fibre per day. However, according to the NHS, most adults are only eating around 20g a day on average. Wondering how to work more fibre into your diet? Fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains (think brown rice, quinoa and spelt) are great places to start. "A good rule of thumb is to aim for 30 different plant varieties per week—this includes fruits and vegetables as well as herbs, spices, grains, pulses, nuts and seeds," says Dirtea nutritionist, Clarissa Berry. "This target can help you get creative with new foods to try, as well as promoting diversity and increasing your fibre consumption."

However, Berry says it's important to start slowly when introducing more fibre into your diet. "Not everyone can tolerate a high volume of fibre, particularly if they haven’t been eating a lot before, so go slowly if you plan to increase it and be guided by how you feel in your own body, rather than what you see working for someone else online."

5. The Magic of Mushrooms

I don't know if you've noticed, but mushroom supplements seem to be seriously trendy right now. When I first heard of this new wellness discovery, I thought it would be just another fad, but more and more people are incorporating mushroom supplements into their daily routines. My question is, what do they actually do?

"Mushrooms are [thought of as] nature's alchemists, offering a huge range of benefits that [are believed to] enhance cognitive function, boost immunity, manage stress, boost energy, improve gut health and promote overall well-being," says Jess Clark, founder of functional mushroom brand, Mother Made.

Berry agrees, and says that different mushrooms can provide unique health benefits. "Many functional mushrooms are also rich in 'prebiotic' compounds that nourish our gut bacteria, which can greatly contribute to gut health," she adds.

So why are they suddenly popular? "I think people are craving a natural alternative to synthetic supplements, and mushrooms have proven time and time again just how powerful natural healing can be," explains Clark.

"There is more awareness than ever about the benefits of functional mushrooms, and with more delicious ways to consume them appearing on the market, it’s only natural that people will find it easier to enjoy them," adds Berry.

That being said, it's important to approach any form of nutritional supplementation with caution. As iterated by the experts, when it comes to wellness, the key is listening to your body and finding out what works for you. Of course, you don't need mushroom supplements in order to be healthy, and it is important to always check in with your doctor before adding any new supplements into your routine.

6. Stress Less

A trend that I can definitely get on board with in 2025 is stress management. After being incredibly busy over the past year or so, I have definitely felt the effects of not allowing myself to slow down for a moment, and I know lots of people who ended the year feeling burnt out and fatigued.

"Life isn’t slowing down anytime soon so I think people are intentionally seeking calm moments in their busy lives," says Deery. "We will see a huge focus on tools like journaling, breathwork and sound healing [in 2025]. I think going to a sound bath with friends will be the new bar."

In fact, Deery tells me that the sound bath and breathwork analytics on her Pilates By Bryony app app are higher than ever. "It's amazing to see people investing in their mental health," she says.

7. Back to Basics

I felt that it was only right to end this wellness report on a trend that sparked the entire idea behind this feature in the first place. With so much information out there, it can be so hard to know what to eat, how to workout and when to rest in order to feel your best. According to the experts, this is the year that we take things back to basics.

"My hope is that people will move towards more mindful and flexible eating patterns that honour their unique biochemical needs," says Sepel. "The wellness world can sometimes lean too heavily on trends, but the key is listening to your body and finding balance that works for you."

Alongside this back-to-basics approach, Sepel says that quick fixes are out and holistic health is very much in. "Holistic health is becoming more popular as people realise that results from trendy diets or wellness fads are often short-lived," she explains. "I believe we’ll see a gradual shift away from rigid, one-size-fits-all diets and towards a more mindful, flexible approach to eating and self-care. It’s a process, and it may take time, but I’m hopeful that people will eventually embrace a more intuitive way of nourishing themselves."

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Is it just me, or is everyone obsessed with matcha? It feels as though as soon as I open any social media app, I'm greeted with clips of people making matcha, going for matcha dates or talking about the health benefits of this trending green drink.

From Blank Street to Pret, you can pick up a matcha latte pretty much anywhere these days, and there are all sorts of variations out there (who remembers the blueberry matcha craze?). The thing is, I only tried it myself a few months ago, and I'm still not really sure what it is, if I like it or if it's actually good for me.

However, I think the first thing worth noting is that matcha isn't the flash-in-the-pan wellness trend that you might think it is. The tea actually has a rich history; it can be traced back to China hundreds and hundreds (and hundreds) of years ago, before making its way to Japan and becoming a traditional part of Japanese tea ceremonies.

Thanks to this rich history and its apparent health benefits, I've been keen to learn more about this popular drink. So, like any good journalist, I decided to reach out to the experts to find out where matcha comes from and how (or if) drinking it could benefit me in any way. Intrigued to learn my findings? What Is Matcha?

First things first, what actually is matcha? According to Clarissa Berry, nutritionist at health and wellness brand Dirtea, matcha is a specific type of green tea made from finely ground, powdered tea leaves. "Like all tea, it comes from the camellia sinensis plant," adds Maria Dawson, managing director at Japanese speciality food brand Clearspring.

"To prepare matcha, tea plants are grown in the shade, increasing their chlorophyll content and giving matcha its vibrant green colour," Berry tells me. "The tea leaves are harvested, dried and ground into a superfine powder, which is later dissolved in water to be consumed."

According to Dawson, the youngest, most vibrant leaves at the top of the tea bush are those chosen to make the most celebrated variety of matcha, called "ceremonial" or "ceremonial grade". "This is the variety used during Japanese tea ceremonies to enjoy traditional matcha made with warm water," she says.

How Can You Prepare Matcha?

I'm sure you've all heard of a matcha latte, but as explained to me by Berry, this drink is a popular Western twist on traditional matcha tea and uses steamed milk instead of water. However, I was keen to find out how to prepare a traditional matcha drink.

"Traditionally, matcha is prepared as tea by whisking the powder into hot water," says Berry. "First, add a heaped teaspoon of matcha powder to a small bowl, followed by a splash of hot (but not boiling) water. Using a traditional bamboo whisk, mix the powder into the water using a zigzag motion, until fully dissolved and frothy. Finally, top up [your tea] with hot water."

What Does Matcha Taste Like?

There are lots of drinks that combine matcha with flavoured milks and sugary syrups, but what does matcha actually taste like on its own? "Matcha is deliciously 'green-tasting', if that’s a thing," says Berry. "It has quite an earthy, grassy taste; well balanced with natural sweetness, savoury richness and sometimes a slight but pleasant bitterness. It is smooth, fresh and complex."

What Are the Health Benefits of Drinking Matcha?

According to the experts, matcha really does have some incredible health benefits. "The differences in the cultivation and preparation of matcha compared to regular green tea, and the fact that the entire leaf is consumed rather than just its infusion, means that matcha is considerably richer in antioxidants," explains Berry. "It’s particularly renowned for its concentration of EGCG, a potent antioxidant that can help to reduce inflammation in the body and promote both heart and brain health. It also provides a hefty dose of chlorophyll, which has antioxidant properties and is highly nutritious."

Not only that, but it could help with stress and those dreaded post-caffeine jitters. "Matcha is rich in caffeine which makes it highly energising and cognitively stimulating, similar to a cup of coffee," says Berry. "However, what’s interesting is that it also provides a source of l-theanine, an amino acid that promotes the production of calming neurotransmitters in the brain. L-theanine has been shown to reduce stress, improve mental alertness and offset some of the more stimulating effects of caffeine like anxiety or jitters."

Is Matcha Better for You Than Coffee?

Considering all of the health benefits, it begs the question, should we all be swapping our coffee for matcha? "On balance, it can be argued that matcha is the healthier choice, but that’s not to say that coffee isn’t also healthy," says Berry. "However, matcha has a slight edge on antioxidant content and has unique properties from chlorophyll, which besides its antioxidant benefits, may support detoxification; l-theanine, which promotes relaxation and mental clarity, and catechins like EGCG. My at-home yoga and flow practices tend to be short (up to 30 minutes) and not too challenging. Because of this, I like to wear a long-sleeved crop like the Movement Long-T Crop for extra warmth in winter, with biker shorts. As a beauty editor, I adore how wide-reaching and varied the industry is. We all know that high levels of cortisol (AKA the stress hormone) are bad for our mental and physical health and wellbeing. But in all honesty, it is easier said than done when it comes to lowering my stress levels.

Stress is an unavoidable part of life. However, in today's world, it's not uncommon to feel constantly on edge. From juggling work pressures to keeping the plates spinning in personal lives and batting off the constant stream of notifications from our phones while we're at it, modern life can feel overwhelming at times. Whether it be financial concerns, the political and social landscapes we live in, or major personal life changes, stress can stem from various sources.

So, it's not surprising that search interest in 'cortisol' in the UK is at or near its highest level on record and a recent YouGov survey found that 81% of UK women say they've felt so stressed in the past year that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope, compared with 67% of men. The World Health Organisation (WHO) officially recognised burnout as a medical diagnosis back in 2019, and lately, my For You Page has been inundated with videos all around the topic, from "cortisol face" to "high cortisol symptoms" and the best supplements to reduce cortisol. It seems cortisol is a particularly hot topic right now, and many of us want to know how to lower our cortisol to boost our health, manage our stress and feel our best.

However, with so much misinformation on social platforms, I decided to enlist the help of hormone doctor Dr Sohère Roked, and nutritionist Maz Packham, asking them to share their expert-approved tips to effectively lower our cortisol levels and clear up some myths around the stress hormone. But first, what exactly is cortisol, and why do we need it?

What Is Cortisol?

Cortisol often gets a bad rap, but our bodies do need this hormone in order to carry out different functions (such as regulating our blood pressure and helping us wake up in the morning. "Cortisol is a stress hormone which is made by our adrenal glands," explains Dr Roked. "It is important because it can help us cope with stresses in life, but our body doesn't know the difference between perceived stress, like watching a scary film, or getting stressed at work, or being chased by a bear. So often, our bodies are in overdrive because we have a lot more stress these days than before," she says.

"If we're producing a lot of cortisol for day-to-day things, then this can lead to inflammation in our bodies. And eventually, if we're under stress for a long period of time, it could lead to us producing less cortisol, which can be when you're in a burnout situation," she says.

What Are the Symptoms of High Cortisol?

According to Dr Roked, symptoms of high cortisol can include:

- Aches and pains
- Skin rashes
- Poor sleep
- Feeling irritable or agitated
- Feeling tired after exercise, rather than energised
- Feeling both tired and wired

"Another sign of high cortisol is that when you do vigorous exercise, like, say, a HIIT class, a spin class or a big run, you can then actually feel more tired after and not energised, because your cortisol is already high, and then having so much cortisol in your system can lead to feeling quite tired," she says.

"Having high cortisol can often be described as feeling tired and wired. So you can maybe feel tired all day, but when it comes to relaxing in the evening and winding down, you then feel really wired and can't sleep," she adds.

How Does High Cortisol Affect Women?

"There aren't any real symptoms specific to women. However, having high cortisol can dysregulate our female hormones, so you can sometimes get changes in your period, like heavier or more painful periods, or you have a shorter cycle or bleeding in between," says Dr Roked.

Being on hormonal contraception like the pill doesn't directly affect our cortisol levels exactly; however, "sometimes, because it's shutting off our ovaries, which produce our natural estrogen and progesterone and testosterone, we can sometimes have less resilience to deal with the stress," explains Dr Roked.

How Does Cortisol Affect the Face?

You may have seen the term "cortisol face" doing the rounds on TikTok, claiming that having high cortisol can make our faces puffy. And there is some truth to it. "Having high cortisol can sometimes cause facial puffiness," says Dr Roked, "however, not everyone with high cortisol gets facial puffiness, but yes, sometimes you can get a puffier face or ankles, or feel like you're retaining more fluid. It can also sometimes cause rashes, and sometimes that can manifest on the face as well."

How Does High Cortisol Affect Weight?

If you're trying to lose weight, you may find that high cortisol levels can make this harder. "Cortisol affects weight because it causes inflammation in our system, and then this inflammation leads the body to think we're under attack," says Dr Roked. "Because of the high cortisol, our body will store fat. So some people find it harder to lose weight if their cortisol is high, even though they're doing all the right things."

How to Lower Cortisol Safely

There is no single silver bullet or hack to instantly lower our cortisol levels. "Regulating your cortisol doesn't happen overnight," affirms Dr Roked. "I myself have had high cortisol for a number of years, and it's taken me a good four to five years of consistency to try and get things in place." However, addressing our lifestyle and making changes that positively affect our day-to-day lives can help reduce our cortisol levels both now and in the long run.

Below are the six expert-approved tips that Dr Roked and nutritionist Maz Packham recommend to effectively lower our cortisol and manage our stress levels.

7 Steps to Lowering Your Cortisol

1. Factor In Time to Relax

Our schedules can be jam-packed with responsibilities; however, finding time throughout the day to focus on your wellbeing can help lower high cortisol levels. "Find small pockets of time to unwind and relax, even just doing a 10-minute meditation app in the morning and evening, maybe some gentle yoga," says Dr Roked.

For those who are really time poor, try stacking relaxation into activities you're already doing each day. "Do something when you're already doing something else. If you're on your commute, you could be doing your work, or you could be listening to some relaxing music that puts you in a good state. You could be listening to some meditation or positive affirmations. If you go for a walk at lunchtime, you can either be on your phone, or you could be really present during your walk, looking at nature and being mindful of anything else—it's about consistency," she says.

2. Prioritise Gentle Exercise

The more workouts and the higher the intensity, the better, right? Not necessarily if we want to lower our cortisol levels. "The mistake people make is doing really high-intensity exercise, because that's what we've been taught exercise is," says Dr Roked. However, lower-intensity movement like walking, pilates and yoga are great forms of exercise, which, unlike a HIIT workout or full-on spin class, won't elevate your stress levels further.

"When I see patients with high cortisol, I ask 'So do you do yoga?' and they will often respond 'No, I don't really like yoga. It's too slow, I can't focus on meditation, because my mind's quite busy'," she says. However, if you have high cortisol, these are the exact forms of exercise you should be doing. "It's really about carving out moments to do more gentle, mindful things," says Dr Roked. "I have a patient who runs a lot very intensely, so I asked her if she could maybe run for less time and a bit less intensely. So it's just about changing your routine up a little bit."

3. Reduce Screen Time

Many of us are guilty of doomscrolling on our phones; however, too much screen time can inhibit our ability to relax and switch off. It can be easy for any small amount of downtime we do have during the day to be stolen away by scrolling on social media, so try to be mindful about your overall screen time and actively choose more mindful activities. Dr Roked suggests going for more walks in nature, practising meditation or breath work. "Focusing on the breath can really help regulate cortisol too," she says.

4. Limit Caffeine

Caffeine is fine in moderation, but too much can raise your cortisol levels. "Caffeine is a stimulant, and we know having excess caffeine can increase cortisol levels as it stimulates the adrenal glands, which can lead to elevated cortisol production and therefore increases the stress response," explains Packham. If you experience elevated stress levels, try limiting your caffeine in take a notice how you feel. "Also look to calming herbal teas such as chamomile and lemon balm to help promote relaxation and have a positive influence on stress reduction," advises Packham.

5. Limit Processed Foods

Our diet can play a huge role in our cortisol levels, says Packham. "Eating foods rich in sugar or refined carbs such as pastries, biscuits and breads, for example, are broken down quickly and rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, causing a spike in blood glucose," she says. "Insulin is released to help the cells absorb the glucose and store it for energy, which rebalances blood glucose levels, but what also happens is that high blood sugar levels, especially if they are constantly spiking, are a stressor on the body which can lead to elevated cortisol levels," she says. As a result, constantly elevated levels can result in inflammation and lead to other metabolic issues, such as insulin resistance.

Instead, Packham recommends a balanced diet, including the below:

- Fruits, including berries
- Vegetables, including leafy greens
- Whole grains and complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice
- Good quality, lean proteins
- Oily fish, such as salmon and sardines
- Herbal teas

Prioritise a "healthy balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to reduce inflammation," says Packham. "Include berries and leafy greens regularly as they are also rich in mega antioxidant vitamin C and magnesium, which supports relaxation and can help regulate cortisol levels."

Good quality proteins are essential. "[These] help manage blood glucose levels as do wholegrains or complex carbs like brown rice, which can help stabilise blood sugar and minimise the release of excess cortisol triggered by poor blood sugar control," says Packham.

6. Eat Mindfully

It's not just what we eat, but how we eat, too. Below, Packham has some tips to help eat more mindfully and lower our stress levels.

Don't skip meals: "Think about the timing of your meals, as skipping meals can also contribute to fluctuations in cortisol levels, as it can cause your blood glucose levels to drop, which is perceived as a stressor to the body," says Packham. "In response, the adrenal glands release cortisol to help increase blood sugar by promoting the release of stored glucose from the liver. So, eating regular balanced meals is a good idea if you are looking to keep cortisol levels steady."

Meal timings: Try to leave at least two or three hours before your last meal of the day and going to sleep. "Eating late or close to bedtime can lead to elevated cortisol levels when you’re trying to get to sleep," says Packham.

Relax when eating: Eating when we are stressed can compromise our digestion, as well inhibiting the absorption of nutrients. "During times of fight or flight when there are elevated cortisol levels, blood can be diverted away from the gut and into the muscles where the body thinks it may be needed, to escape danger for example—this can also impair effective digestion and nutrient absorption," says Packham.

Beat bloating: Taking a moment to relax before eating can help with bloating, too. "We know that high cortisol can lead to decreased production of digestive enzymes and stomach acid, which affects the digestive process, how well we are absorbing nutrients from our food, and may also lead to bloating," she says. "Elevated cortisol can also affect gut health in other ways—it can affect motility (the speed that food moves through the system) so you may experience a change in your bowel motions," she says.

Breathing before eating: "Take a few deep breaths at the start of your meal to support the parasympathetic nervous system, which is known as the rest and digest state. It keeps the body calm, keeps cortisol levels steady and supports a more efficient digestion process

Eat slowly: Mindful eating is really important, so eat slowly and take time to chew your food. "Slow down and make a date with your meal," recommends Packham. "Try to avoid going on your phone or working at your laptop while you eat, as your environment has the potential to cause stress and trigger cortisol production."

Stay hydrated: "Drink plenty of water throughout the day as dehydration can increase cortisol levels within the blood.

7. Enlist the Support of Supplements

Both Packham and Dr Roked recommend the supplements below to help lower cortisol.

Vitamin C: "Vitamin C is nourishing for the adrenals, so it can help with cortisol regulation," says Dr Roked. During times of stress, it can also be depleted. "Replenishing it during periods of acute stress is especially important, as it helps reduce cortisol levels and supports the body’s stress response," adds Packham.

B Vitamins: These are important for a whole number of functions in the body, but are particularly important for managing cortisol levels.

Magnesium: "Magnesium is an essential mineral depleted in times of stress. It supports GABA activity. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that can lower cortisol levels by encouraging relaxation.

Ashwagandha: Herbal adaptogens, such as ashwagandha or rhodiola, work by regulating our cortisol, which can be beneficial for both those with high cortisol, as well as those with low cortisol. "There are some studies that show it reduces the cytokines and interleukins, which are inflammatory markers in the body," adds Dr Roked.

I try to approach these things with a healthy dose of scepticism whilst remaining open-minded, but the truth is that I've found sound baths to be some of the most immersive and relaxing experiences I have ever had, truly transporting me away from the physical space and scratching my itch for escapism.

Done right, a sound bath provides you with a comfortable space and a soundtrack that aids your ability to reach a deeply meditative state. I first became interested in the world of sound therapy when I found Farzana Ali on Instagram. She's one of the best in the business, and I've been following the tips and suggestions she shares for ages. I recommend checking out her page before taking a deeper dive with her new book, Sound Healing: How to Use Sound to Beat Stress and Anxiety.

What Is a Sound Bath?

For the uninitiated, a sound bath is a meditative experience where those in attendance are "bathed" in sound waves. These sound waves are produced by instruments whose sounds are believed to have healing properties, such as gongs, singing bowls, chimes, rattles, tuning forks and even the human voice. The music doesn’t have a particularly "catchy" melody or rhythm— instead, it's usually a carefully crafted soundscape of instrument and voice with distinct resonance and overtones. During a sound bath, you lie on your back with a sound healing practitioner facilitating the experience, and sometimes the group also participates in the chants and mantras. Sessions can be as long as an hour and often end with slow movement to ease you back to reality.

What Does a Sound Bath Feel Like?

I've attended a number of sound baths to date, from mentally escaping the stresses of London to trying to find the ultimate chill whilst holidaying in Tulum, Mexico. I'm not going to say that every one of these has been transcendental, but as I said above, they can be, so persevere if at first you don't succeed. When I've been most moved by a sound bath, I've left with a deep sense of satisfaction that I usually only get from solo meditation, combined with a warm feeling of community and shared experience.

The chanting, mantras and sounds create this atmosphere of togetherness; I've often closed my eyes and felt both at one with the others in the room and like I was actually part of the sound. Be warned: it can get emotional. On a few occasions, I and my fellow bathers have been known to cry during the experience, and I've never felt anything but supported in that moment.

On a more practical level, a sound bath is so easy to fit into your schedule because there's no need to change or shower, and you can do them online from home too, though it's not exactly the same experience as in person (more on that below). My anxiety and stress levels have massively improved as a result of regular sound baths, and because there are so many around now, making it easy to attend a session, it's a fantastic way to "spot reduce" my anxious thoughts.

What Do You Need to Know Before Your First Sound Bath?

Go with an open mind and open heart. Sound healing is a great tool for rest, relaxation and transformation, but intention is key too. Stay open to the experience and don’t assume what it might be like. Sound has a great ability to meet us where we're at, so whatever comes up for you in a session will tell you a great deal about what you (or your nervous system) are processing.

Sometimes people fall asleep during a session and feel guilty for doing so, but if sleep is what you needed the most from the session then that’s okay. Also, don’t forget that you don’t just hear the sounds in a sound bath; you feel them too, so even if you did fall asleep, you’d still benefit from the session. Post-sound bath, try to stay relaxed and hydrated.

What Are the Benefits of Sound Baths?

Sound healing has so many amazing benefits—it’s so transformational in so many ways. It can allow you to access deep rest, change your viewpoint on anything you're working on internally, release stress and trauma and even leave you feeling inspired and productive—sound healing really does have so many pros. Best of all, it requires no effort. All you have to do is turn up, lie down and listen.

What Are the Cons of Sound Baths?

There are no "cons" as such with sound healing. Unlike medication, there are no side effects. However, if you suffer from seizures or wear a pacemaker then in-person sessions aren’t suitable, as the vibrations could interfere with the machinery.

Are Online Sound Baths as Good as In-Person Sessions?

Recent research has shown that digital sound baths can be just as effective as in-person ones, whilst having slightly different benefits. So, of course, an in-person session will likely be more tailored to you (or your group if you’re in a class setting), and you’ll physically feel the vibrations, making for a much more immersive experience. However, studies show that digital sound baths can still lead to more insightful and introspective ASC (altered states of consciousness) experiences.

It's January, which is typically the time of year when we all start thinking about New Year's resolutions and what we might want to achieve over the next 12 months. Of course, you can set goals at any time of the year, but the first month offers a fitting clean slate and is also when we tend to reflect on the previous year and begin to look ahead to the next. From starting a new fitness routine to organising your wardrobe, New Year's resolutions can come in all forms.

I don't know about you, but I have mixed feelings about them myself. I often start the year full of motivation, ambition and good intentions once I've set my goals, but by the time March rolls around, I find that life has inevitably got in the way, routines are too easily disrupted and it can be tricky to stay on track. Sticking with a goal or a new routine can prove difficult.

This year, however, I'm willing to try a different approach. An opportunity came up to speak with Roxie Nafousi, manifestation expert and author of the best-selling book Manifest, and after our conversation, my entire perspective on making and sticking to New Year's resolutions had shifted. Scroll ahead for all the gems of advice she gave me. But first, you might be thinking: what is manifesting exactly?

What Is Manifesting?

Roxie Nafousi is the author of the best-selling book Manifest.

Let's first get clear on manifesting, which can often be understood as wishing things into existence. "Manifesting is using the power of your mind to change and create the reality you’re living in—it's a self-development practice," says Nafousi. She explains that it is often confused with the law of attraction (in which it is believed that positive thoughts lead to positive outcomes). With manifestation, she tells me, we're instead attracting what we already believe to be true. 

"A big part of manifesting is about our belief system," says Nafousi. "Our belief system not only changes what we attract into our lives, but it changes the way we feel about ourselves. And so manifesting is really about empowerment, self-belief, confidence and becoming the best version of ourselves. It's about being able to step out of our own way, take risks and go through with the things that we actually want," she says.

With that being said, there are limits to manifestation. And no, you probably can't manifest winning the lottery (sorry). "I always get asked, 'Can you manifest a specific person?' And the answer is no," says Nafousi. "You also can't manifest for somebody else, and you can't manifest something that is only to do with luck, like winning the lottery. There has to be a degree of an element of something that you have control over," she explains.

Manifesting can act as a useful framework to create goals that you'll actually stick to. "I always say that the goals are actually the cherry on top, that the actual gift of manifesting is helping us become happier," she says. Ahead, Nafousi tells us exactly how to implement manifestion into our New Year's resolutions and goal-setting practices.

1. Add Purpose to Your Goals

Nafousi tells me that getting to the real purpose behind your goal is key.

"[The new year] is this really unique time where we have this sense of a new beginning and a fresh start. And so with that energy, people are more motivated to do things differently or change things. And I think that's always a good thing. What I think can get missed is that people focus on what they want to change without really thinking about where that's leading them," she says.

Getting really granular about how you'll execute your goals with exact steps is key. "Without the focus or the purpose behind why they want to make that change, what happens is that the initial excitement of the new year wanes and the resolutions fall off," says Nafousi. "Whereas if you're using manifestation, what you're doing is focusing really heavily on specific goals. You know, why do you want to make the change?"

Nafousi breaks it down as an example for someone who may want to get ahead in their career. "So you could say, 'Okay, I'm going to get to work 10 minutes earlier every day, so I don't feel rushed because my goal is to be promoted to a particular position by the end of the year. Or, let's say, 'Because I own my own business, I want to have this many clients by the end of the year, and that extra 10 minutes is going to really add up.' Knowing why you're doing something is going to help on the days when you don't feel like it," she explains. "Resolutions are great, but know why you're doing it and what the goal is at the end of it."

2. Categorise Your Goals

At the start of the year, it can be useful to break your goals into categories. "I always suggest splitting your life into categories so that you can get a full picture of what your life is like," says Nafousi. "So you know, personal relationships, romance, work life, home life and personal development, which is more like how you want to feel within yourself," she says.

"Then, within each section, make sure that you're clarifying your goal. But really allow yourself to be as big as possible in those dreams. When you're thinking about your goals, I do think it's really important to make sure that your goals are really aligned with your most authentic self and who you actually are," she says. "Because sometimes we make goals that are based on what [other] people want for us, or what we used to want, and actually, we don't allow ourselves to realise that maybe we've changed and the things that we want are different," she adds. "And those things that we thought made us happy, don't. And so it's a really nice opportunity to also get clear on what you actually want [for yourself]."

3. Dream Big, But Be Realistic

Another of Nafousi's tips for creating goals? Dream big. "I think that it is definitely possible to dream too small," she says. "And I always say that most people will write down goals that they think are ‘realistic’, and I hate that because what is actually happening is your insecurities are running the show and they're telling you what is too big or too small, and so that's what we don't want," she says. "What we want when we're thinking about our goals and dreams is to say to ourselves, 'If fear and doubt were no object, if I could do anything, what is it that I really want?'," she says.

However, it's essential to get clear on how you'll make it happen and what purpose it serves. "Let's say you were thinking about having a certain amount of money next year. Don't just think of a number out of thin air just because it sounds good. Try to be real with yourself on it. What is it you want that money for? What's it going to give you? What's the purpose behind it? Is that actually going to bring you happiness and contentment? I think there needs to be meaning behind the goal. If you feel that, for example, having a certain amount of clients will bring you joy, or having a big house will bring you joy, put it down. But don't go big just for the sake of it—be intentional." 

Nafousi shares how she put this into practice when writing her first book. "Before my first book came out, no one had read it. And I put things like 'Sunday Times best seller' and 'multiple languages'. At the time these were all completely outlandish, but they were huge dreams and they did happen," she says. "I had a very strong purpose behind it—purposes that I truly wanted; as many people as I could possibly get to read it across the globe and positively change their lives. So there was a real intention behind it."

4. Know That Goals Don't Have to Be Huge

When we think about New Year's resolutions, it's easy to think we have to set huge or overwhelmingly ambitious goals. But this doesn't have to be the case—goals can also be small rituals that enhance or bring joy to your life. 

"In 2023, my goals weren't all these crazy big career goals. Although there were some, mine were things like work-life balance, and that was the thing that I was focusing on. I think everyone should have a goal; everybody needs things to work towards, but they don't all have to be these big things that need a certain energy behind them. It could be that you want to get really good at a hobby," she says. It could be that you want to make more me-time in your week or get back into reading again—anything that makes you feel joyful. "Your goals can be whatever you want, but just make sure that there's a real purpose behind them," says Nafousi.

5. Practice Self-Compassion When You Fall Off Track

Fallen off the bandwagon? Or maybe one week was a total flop? It happens. What matters is how you bounce back, says Nafousi. "Firstly, sometimes you just need to let yourself have that time to be 'off'. You don't have to be motivated and 'on' all the time, so make sure you've given yourself enough compassion first," she says. "Once you feel like you've had your time of retreating and feeling sorry for yourself for a little bit, then we have to kick ourselves up the ass and re-energise ourselves with that clarity of what our goals are. What do you want to achieve? Why do you want to achieve them? What are they going to bring you? What change do you want? I find that is always helpful."

Nafousi calls these tricky moments "tests from the universe". "You're going to have bad days and you're going to have shit weeks. But you know how to pull yourself out of it. You know how to make that into a positive experience. You know there's levelling up on the other side," she says.

6. Reward Yourself

Are you keeping on track with your goals? Or maybe you've achieved a huge milestone? Celebrate it, says Nafousi.

"I think being able to celebrate yourself and give yourself rewards when you've done things for a certain amount of time is really key in manifestation," she says. "Let’s say every day that month you did do that thing on your New Year's resolution list. Really take time to feel proud of yourself," she says. "Think about that feeling of pride. Reflect on what that has actually done for you, how [it's] made you feel, how it's helped you to progress and then how you can reward yourself for [it]. It's a really nice way to reinforce good habits."

Hands up if you find yourself setting a new gym goal every January (and this time, really meaning it), only to cancel your membership within a few short months. Raise your other hand if you're determined to break this cycle in 2025. Same—and you can hold me to that. It’s nearly impossible to be anonymous in our hyper-connected world. While millennials have been flouted as early adopters of technology to a detrimental degree, Gen Zers were born into the age of digital media. They know that what gets published on the internet stays on the internet. That’s a fact of the 21st century that many young people have embraced, including actress, singer, and activist Amandla Stenberg. 

Stenberg is many things, but she’s certainly not your average starlet. The 22-year-old began her career with Disney at age 4 and burst onto the young Hollywood scene as Rue, the beloved tribute from District 11 in the first Hunger Games movie. More recently, Stenberg played Starr Carter in the fantastic 2018 adaptation of The Hate U Give, which garnered even more visibility for her as a voice of Gen Z and as an activist in the broader Black Lives Matter movement.

After a year of keeping busy behind the scenes amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stenberg is back in the spotlight, starring as Alana Beck in the film adaptation of Broadway smash hit Dear Evan Hansen. A confident, hyper-involved, type A valedictorian, Alana follows in the footsteps of Grease’s Patty Simcox and Election’s Tracy Flick—with a notable twist. Alana has always been played by a Black woman, as originated by Kristolyn Lloyd when the show debuted on Broadway in 2016. Stenberg considered this critical casting element as she stepped into the role. "Within the Black community, conversations about mental health are not normalized culturally,” she explains. "There’s a societal pressure to prove yourself, especially if you have the experience of being the person in your family to achieve upward mobility or the child who carries the responsibility in your family.” With this insight top of mind, Stenberg embraced the opportunity to dig deeper into her character’s psyche through song.

Alana’s presence is secondary in the stage performance, serving mostly as a vehicle for comic relief. However, fans of the original will be delighted by the new life that Stenberg breathes into her character with an expanded role and original solo. "I remember reading the script and already feeling very connected to her, thinking this girl is super cool and weird,” Stenberg divulges, noting that it was easy to draw parallels between the two. "I was a super–type A student,” she shares, "Like, really hard on myself and intensely academic. My grades felt like life and death for me.” In addition to the pressure of being a 21st-century teen, Stenberg had to contend with the pressures of coming of age in Hollywood, a double-edged sword hardly imaginable by the students in Dear Evan Hansen’s high school setting. 

Through close partnership with screenplay writer Steven Levenson and creators Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Stenberg penned "The Anonymous Ones,” which reveals Beck’s internal struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, and climbing the ladder of success. "When I was cast, [Pasek and Paul] came to me pretty immediately and said, ‘We have this opportunity to expand this character on the screen and to explore her more. So who do you want her to be? What do you want to communicate through her?’ and invited me to collaborate on the song,” recalls Stenberg, who appreciated the ability to explore her character emotionally through the power of music.

Stenberg was in her element writing the song with Pasek and Paul, which was executed not just over Zoom but also across time zones, with two-thirds of the team stateside and Stenberg in Denmark. (She is half Danish.) "A lot of our Zoom sessions were late at night for me, which I loved because I’m a night owl. It was just me and Ben Pasek and Justin Paul and many, many cups of tea. We spent nights debating over lyrics, and there were many moments of spontaneously breaking into ‘Kiss From a Rose,’ by Seal. That’s musical theater work,” she explains with a note of playfulness. "Bursting into song or just genuinely being foolish was preordained, and I’m proud of how it turned out.”

Not only does the song specifically shout out the use of Lexapro, a common prescription antidepressant, but it also prompts listeners to take stock of their personal struggles and coping mechanisms. "We decided to focus on her journey with mental health,” Stenberg explains, astutely noting that, whereas Evan has this feeling of isolation throughout the film, this was an opportunity for Alana to bring in another perspective, one which not only subverts the type A character archetype but also lifts the veil on what it’s like to feel pressure and worry as a young Black kid. "That was something we talked about a lot in the construction era of the character,” shares Stenberg. "Pasek, Paul, and Steven Levenson and I talked about how it feels to be a Black kid with that weight on their shoulders who is struggling with depression and anxiety.” This is something Stenberg knows a thing or two about from her personal experience growing up in the limelight. In writing "The Anonymous Ones,” Stenberg empowered her character to communicate the anxieties that bubble under the surface. Though the song is not lyrically complex, the message is strong: "It’s a challenging process and experience to be a human being and to be vulnerable to other human beings,” explains Stenberg. "I hope that people connect to it or feel seen by it. That was the main priority for me—that the kids who already have a connection to the [Broadway show] feel further seen and understood by the song.” 

Although Alana’s vulnerability is simultaneously unexpected and striking, Stenberg’s version of the character is not a foil to Evan Hansen, the titular character and antihero protagonist reprised by the inimitable Ben Platt. Rather, Beck is a mirror, reflecting the usual coming-of-age trope: Appearances can be deceiving. "There are actually tons of people who feel similar [to Evan], and Alana reveals herself to be one of those people, even though you might not assume that about her,” she clarifies.

The film, which is equally heavy as (if not more so than) the original show, debuted on September 24, but Stenberg and I caught up earlier in the month over Zoom. Between the New York Fashion Week frenzy and preparing for her trip to the Toronto International Film Festival, she talked with me about Dear Evan Hansen and her character as well as her personal style and, crucially, her passion for speaking up about mental health. "It was really exciting for me to play a Black girl with anxiety and depression,” she shares. "It has taken years for me to arrive at the point where I can seek out the help and treatment that I need because that treatment is not super normalized. So to play a Black girl that’s on meds was really gratifying.”

It’s no coincidence that we sought out Stenberg for Who What Wear’s October cover (in addition to her expanded role in the highly anticipated film, it is Depression and Mental Health Screening Month), so it was wonderful to be able to have a conversation that was refreshingly candid, vulnerable, and a bit therapeutic. We called in from our respective dwellings in Brooklyn, and Stenberg elected to make this a video-free interview. That’s just one way she chooses to set boundaries and preserve her stamina during this busy period of publicity and high visibility. 

It’s not lost on anyone that music plays a significant role in how Stenberg takes care of her mental health. Notably, several of her past projects have featured her singing, whether in character or over the credits. The timing of Dear Evan Hansen is also prescient, aligning with Stenberg’s release of her first original single and music video that she produced and wrote herself. "I’m in this really exciting moment where I’m less afraid or, at least, feel developed enough as a musician to show that off to the world,” Stenberg emotes. Although, she is still debating over the song’s title, which she acknowledges is a critical item on her vast to-do list.

Of course, it comes as no surprise that Stenberg’s musical tastes are excitingly eclectic. Obviously, she can do musical theater, but the self-proclaimed "raver kid” describes her sound as house, emo, and alternative R&B, with a few bars of rap thrown in. "I live in New York City and DJ events and raves. That culture is inevitably intertwined in queer culture, which is really important to me and the way that I express myself,” she confides. 

Since relocating from her home in Los Angeles to NYC, Stenberg has found support and strength in her social circle, which is mostly comprised of similarly minded queer folks like herself. "I think therapy is critical for everybody. Everyone should be in therapy. That’s kind of my belief system, and it’s really normalized in my immediate community, which is nice,” she shares. "I have a really tight-knit queer community mostly comprised of people of color, and we definitely process things together. That has done wonders for my mental health. It’s also something me and my partner have removed the taboo around.” By incorporating regular talk therapy sessions into her overall self-care routine, Stenberg is able to maintain a baseline instead of seeking help solely in times of strife. She continues, "Therapy is not just something you do in moments of conflict or low moments, but rather as a continual practice that you lean on to stay actively working on yourself and your relationships.” 

Being vocal about one’s mental health needs is still challenging for many people. That pressure is magnified for those with public personas, like Olympian Simone Biles and tennis superstar Naomi Osaka. This summer, both women were at the top of their careers, performing at the pinnacle of their professions, when they chose to take a step back. Biles sat out a few events during the Summer Olympics in Tokyo following a scary encounter with the "twisties,” and Osaka dropped out of the French Open after choosing to forgo the routine press conferences. Both women cited the need to attend to their mental health as their priority.

The world—and Stenberg especially—took note. "I can’t imagine what being at that sort of critical juncture in your life, having so many eyeballs on you, and being under that amount of pressure must feel like, literally competing in the world games,” she reflects. "Deciding to be vulnerable and public about the fact that you need to attend to your mental health… I’m grateful for their bravery. It seems really terrifying.”

As a card-carrying member of Gen Z, Stenberg is also a big fan of mental health TikTok. "I see so many conversations centered on mental health and neurodivergence in general,” she recalls. "Using the internet as a place of communion to discuss the fact that struggling with mental health is normal and thinking of mental health as something you need to tend to as actively as your physical health is a cultural shift that I find refreshing.” On a more analog note, Stenberg also pursues inner peace through music, alone time, and something she and her mom call "pajama days,” which are filled with comfy clothes and marathons of I Love Lucy. Though, that could probably be translated into a TikTok trend, too. 

Given Stenberg’s busy schedule, it’s understandable that digital still reigns supreme in her universe. She loves virtual reality and uses it to keep up with her family and friends. "I’ve always been an internet person,” she acknowledges. "I used to be a blogger, and I’ve always spent time in online communities.” Interestingly, this has had a huge impact on her style, which has plenty of E-girl elements, like fun makeup and flashes of skin. "[My family] ends up spending a lot of time together in VR, like neon fairy princesses running around space. I just want to look like an avatar,” she says. "And that’s what the shoot reminded me of.”

Ah yes, the photo shoot. Who What Wear worked with stylist Rachel Gilman to serendipitously style Stenberg as the E-girl of her dreams, complete with looks from Nanushka and Elliana Capri, Amina Muaddi shoes, and early 2000s–inspired makeup by Steven Canavan. While, as Gen Zers say, "that’s the vibe,” Stenberg has only recently become comfortable with her "work style,” which includes doing red carpets and going to events. "In moving to New York, I wanted an opportunity to start from scratch and have my style be a really authentic reflection of me,” she says. So Stenberg has started collaborating with stylist Kyle Luu, who she describes as occupying the same world, personally and creatively, and she most recently donned memorable looks by Gucci and Thom Browne at TIFF and the Met Gala.

With Dear Evan Hansen, mental health, and personal style fully dissected, Stenberg and I parted ways, on to the next items on our endless to-do lists. For one of us, taking a proactive COVID-19 test before TIFF lied ahead; for the other, writing this article; and for both, checking in with our therapists.

There are two versions of me in the pandemic. The first is a person who’s enthusiastic about working out—sometimes four runs a week, a few HIIT YouTube sessions in the kitchen and maybe a bit of yoga too. But that was the beggining of lockdown, and now, as we’re coming to the end of week 678 in this strange time of our lives, my motivation has started to wane. Instead of working out, my attention is drawn to funny YouTube videos and getting lost down an Instagram hole, all while eating my way through a hefty chunk of Dairy Milk. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I know that I’ll feel much better once my love of exercising returns. So what’s the solution? A bit of extra kit to help me get going again. 

I’m not an expert, though, so I spoke to personal trainer Richard Hart about the sort of technology to invest in, especially when it comes to wearable tech—aka fitness trackers. "The great thing now is that technology has come on so much you won’t really find a bad one out there,” says Hart. "I use mine for fitness, music, and a basic stopwatch, but I don’t like calorie counting, as I think people become too reliant on what that means, as it’s not always precise. But if you’re a beginner, they’re a good stepping stone with tracking how you’re getting on.”

Hart recommends a few options, including Fitbit, Garmin and Apple Watch. Although, he says for the most precise readings, Garmin is one of the best. Another important area to not overlook is the apps that are available, says Hart. If you like running, for example, a new app called District is brilliant, as instead of the stop and start of couch to 5K, this app is all about running to different checkpoints in a city—a much more fun and interactive way to run. There’s also Nike Running and Nike Training, which are worth trying. But the app that Hart says is one of the best when it comes to tracking fitness is Strava, as it’s more precise with its data. With all this in mind, I’ve put together a list of watches that are great for working out, plus a few other pieces of equipment that will motivate you. Next up, the biggest spring/summer 2020 fashion trends to know. 

I will be the first person to admit I am absolutely no gym junkie. You'd be more likely to find me at a café than a workout class on a Saturday morning, and while it would be nice to keep it that way, the New Year has me feeling like I should start putting into practise some healthier lifestyle choices. 

To increase my motivation, I've decided to turn my attention to something I am a little more experienced in: fashion. I figure my investment in fitness will increase in accordance with my investment in fitness clothing. Makes sense, right? 

Luckily, there is a plethora of interesting activewear brands on the market right now making exercise clothing in just about every aesthetic. With colour-block iterations, patterned looks and minimalist monochrome options, there really is a style for everyone, believe me. 

Though, they're not just nice to look at. There is so much technology that goes into great workout gear nowadays. From fast-drying fabrications that will keep you feeling fresh to circular knits that reduce friction, and flatlock stitching to avoid irritation, activewear has come along way since Olivia Newton-John was singing "Let’s Get Physical.”

So whether you choose to head to the gym in an all-black outfit or you'd rather vibrant hues and leopard print, this is the activewear that is making me excited to go to the gym this year.
