Over the past decade, living in France, I have attended what feels like 852 French weddings. I have been to more French weddings than any other type of social event in my life. Children’s birthday parties now come in a respectable second, though they’re nowhere near as competitive. Why so many? It’s not that I have an impossibly large social circle, though my husband does have an impressive number of first cousins. It’s that the French, with their passionate devotion to the separation of religion and state, often have two weddings per couple.

Before any religious ceremony can take place, couples are legally required to marry at their local mairie (city hall). Their forthcoming union is announced publicly on a noticeboard outside the building (to give anyone in the vicinity with just cause the chance to dispute the union), after which they may proceed with whatever religious celebration they choose (or not). For many couples, these become two entirely separate events: a civil wedding in the city, followed weeks or months later by a larger, countryside celebration.

Plus, if you haven’t gone for hair and makeup that’s too elaborate, it’s much less likely to look like it’s come apart at the seams after hours of wild dancing. A few weeks ago, I was perusing the high street and stumbled into Zara. One of my go-to spots for a Who What Wear try-on, I had originally set out on a mission for all things double denim. But that quickly went out of the window as my eyes were drawn to something else entirely: the slinky dresses.

A go-to for me when warmer days approach is a dress style that can work for an entirely different set of occasions. I like my dresses to be the kind you can wear for an event as easily as you can to work or a weekend picnic. You don't want to go for something too elaborate that inadvertently upstages the bride, but you do want something that's a little more special than your everyday hairstyle.

Unlike the bridal party, we might not have a hairstylist to get our hair looking its best on the day. And if you're heading to a destination wedding, finding a nearby salon that won't give you a 2007 era prom hairstyle can prove risky. So, how do we get our hair looking its best as a wedding guest if we don't have access to a glam squad and are going it alone on hairstyling?

Between the Who What Wear UK team, we have a lot of weddings to attend this year. So, we turned to Edward James, founder of Edward James Hair and The Hair Consult for some wedding guest hair inspiration as well as the key advice on how to make the looks work, whether you're heading to the Cotswolds or Capri. Whatever your hair length or texture, there is a look to suit every wedding situation, whether it's in the UK or abroad. Scroll ahead for all the inspiration and tips you could need to see you through the summer wedding season.

The Italian Wedding

The Wedding: I'm attending a wedding in Italy in the middle on June. My default look is wearing my hair down, but with the weather being near the 30 degrees mark in Tuscany, I'm thinking it's safest to have my long hair up and off my neck. I'm also prone to frizz in the summer heat, so James and I landed on an unfussy, easy up-do that still feels cool—literally and metaphorically speaking—while minimising flyaways.

Get the Look:

Step 1: For better hold, you'll want to wear this style with second day hair—freshly washed hair will be too slippery. "Begin by smoothing any flyaways using a hairdryer with a round brush, or alternatively, use hair straighteners, paying special attention to the upper portion of your hair and around the hairline, where it's prone to frizz," says James.

Step 2: "Use a texture spray to introduce volume and gently backcomb around the crown area for enhanced body and height," says James. This helps to create a flattering profile.

Step 3: To create a sleek ponytail, James recommends slightly tilting your head backwards while gathering all your hair just below the crown. You'll then want to secure it with a hair bungee elastic for lasting hold. "Tilting the head back helps prevent the hair from bulging at the back of the head, ensuring a more flattering profile," says James. Lightly mist with hairspray to smooth any stray flyaways. If you have face-framing layers, you can leave some tendrils free if you like.

Step 4: "Next, twist the ponytail and begin pinning it around its base with hair pins to form a simple knot," says James. Having plenty of hair pins will help your style to securely stay in place.

Step 5: "Finally, release two small sections of hair above the forehead and use a hair straightener to add gentle bends and movement, framing the face elegantly," says James. He recommends finishing with a fine mist of hairspray to smooth any remaining flyaways and secure the look.

The Wedding

Affiliates manager Jerrylyn Saguiped had a wedding in the countryside this spring, which inspired this tousled, effortlessly undone wavy look. "I was recently a guest at a countryside wedding in March which took place in a stunning 16th-century mansion. Because the ceremony took place outdoors, I opted to keep my hair down in curls since I thought this could help with keeping warm (a bonus of the style) since the weather was a little temperamental," she says. "I've been obsessed with 'undone', loose waves as opposed to tighter ringlets for more of an effortless feel and less of a need to re-style throughout the day."

Get the Look:

Step 1: "Begin by evenly distributing a heat protectant throughout your hair, with a focus on the mid-lengths and ends which are more frequently subjected to heat," says James.

Step 2: Beginning at the back of your head, section the hair and use a hair straightener to curl. "Following each curl, gently tease or back-comb the root of the section, then apply hairspray and allow it to cool," says James. "Continue this process, working upwards towards the crown, before moving on to curl the sides, directing the curls away from your face."

Step 3: "For hair that lacks volume or that is naturally oily, the application of a texture spray can impart additional body for a more durable style," says James.

Step 4: "After the hair has fully cooled, tips your head upside down and apply extra texture spray, massaging it in with your fingers. Return your head to an upright position and finish with a light misting of hairspray."

Junior beauty editor Grace Lindsay is attending a London wedding and wants an easy yet chic look to see her through the day. "My friend is getting married in the heart of London this spring, so I wanted to go for a cool hairstyle that would fit with her contemporary rooftop hotel location. I've been seeing bow hair accessories everywhere and I knew this would be the perfect way to jazz up a modern ponytail look," she says. "I love how well this hairstyle complimented my dress and the bow elevated the whole look in seconds."

Step 1: Start with your preferred parting, whether it be parted down the middle or to the side. "Begin the styling process by sectioning the hair from the nape upwards. Apply a heat protectant to each section prior to curling. Maintain consistency in the direction of curling for a cohesive look," says James. "Continue working up the back and sides, ensuring each section is meticulously curled."

Step 2: Secure hair into a low ponytail using a bungee hair tie. James has a tip to elevate a basic ponytail. "Enhance the ponytail's sophistication by wrapping a small strand of hair from its base around the bungee elastic to securing it discreetly with a hairpin," he says.

Step 3: "Use a wide-tooth comb to gently shape the ponytail into a sleek, wavy silhouette," he says. "For the hair framing the face, use straighteners to create gentle waves that elegantly frame the face."

Step 4: Next, choose an accessory to add detail. A metal ponytail cuff is particularly chic, and you can never go wrong with a timeless bow at the nape of the neck.

Step 5: "Finalise the style with a light misting of hairspray to ensure durability," says James.

"For my sister's wedding this August, I've been conscious about not falling into the default thinking that braids aren't a 'special occasion' hairstyle. With this in mind, James styled my hair in a half up-half down look, opting for an intricate braid-on-braid for the bun at the top of my head," say freelance beauty journalist Ata-Owaji Victor. "An easy up-do for the multitude of events across the weekend that can easily unpinned when it's time to—literally—let my hair down on the dance floor."

These days, spring weddings can mean many things. It can involve jetting off to a sophisticated European destination, or spending a weekend in the countryside, or heading to a town hall before celebrating the nuptials in a pub garden. Whatever the event specifics may be, the combination of the change of season and toasting to new chapters makes spring weddings feel especially celebratory. And what better way to mark the occasion than with a new dress?

Finding a new dress to toast to the happy couple may be exciting, but it can also prove to be pretty daunting. That's why I've done the work for you and pulled together some of the very best.

Here's my thinking. Given the season, I'm picturing gorgeous colours and joyful prints, from spring-ready pastels to a thoroughly modern take on the classic floral design. This year, the coquettish aesthetic continues to stay on trend, meaning that you could also fully embrace the romance of the moment with a dress adorned with bows and frills.

But I'm also a firm believer that while a wedding is the perfect excuse to play dress up, you still want to stay true to your personal style. So if you're more of an understated minimalist who typically veers away from colours, don't feel like you have to go ultra-feminine just for the occasion. Forget the old rules—black is officially wedding appropriate, and you can still wear dark hues even on a spring day.

Plus, we know what British weather is like—temperamental, to say the least—so when it comes to silhouette and fabrics, you're not bound to one in particular. That being said, my recommendation is to go for a more summer-appropriate dress that you can use for later weddings, and layer with a great jacket for cooler spring affairs.

As a fashion editor, I’m always happy to offer style advice to anyone who asks for it. Most of the time said advice pertains to weddings—what’s acceptable to wear, what isn’t, and whether or not a light shade of blue looks too white in some lights. I understand the anxiety many guests experience when an invitation comes through the letterbox; choosing an outfit for a wedding as a guest—especially a guest who identifies as a woman—can be tricky. White is still considered to be a big no-no (unless it is clearly stipulated on the invite as the desired dress code—something that is becoming a more popular choice for a variety of couples, if you can believe it). Then there’s making sure you don’t end up wearing the same colour or, even worse, the exact same dress, as the bridesmaids. What are the differences between the dress codes of an Indian wedding vs. a western wedding?
Indian weddings will often have multiple events across a few days, and each will have its own dress code. I understand this might be overwhelming, so the general advice I’d give to wedding guests at Indian weddings is to avoid wearing the following colours at religious events: White (mourning), black (inauspicious) and red (bridal).

An Indian wedding will often have multiple events that come with different dress codes. Hindu weddings in particular have religious ceremonies and meanings attached to each event. Below are examples of typical events to expect when you are invited to a Hindu Indian wedding, in chronological order:

Cocktail Night: Often a black tie event, the wedding celebrations will kick off with a party where the couple can let loose and enjoy a glamorous evening with their family and friends before the serious religious festivities get underway.

Mehendi: This is the ceremony where the bride, her family and guests will have their Mehendi (or Henna) done. Traditionally, the groom’s side would not be involved in this and do their own Mehendi at home, but this has now become the official opening wedding event. As the event is usually held in day time, bright colours—often with a dress code referring to green (like the colour of Mehendi) might be suggested. You should dress in an Indian outfit if possible.

Sangeet: This is usually held in the evening and is a dance-off with stage performances from the bride’s and the groom’s side. Traditionally, this is the evening when the couple would get engaged in front of all their guests, ahead of getting married the next day. Guests would often be instructed to wear sparkly outfits—I personally think you can get away with wearing an evening gown if you don’t want to wear another Indian outfit. Men can wear suits and tuxedos.

Haldi: This is probably my favourite of the religious ceremonies in a Hindu wedding. As a purifying ceremony for the bride and the groom, it can be deeply emotional for people close to the couple. Held during the day, I would recommend dressing in light-coloured clothing. It doesn’t need to be Indian per se, but if you do choose to wear western silhouettes, please do keep them modest. Often the theme will suggest colours in the shades of yellow and orange, as “haldi” translates to “turmeric” in Hindi.

Phere: This is the final event of the wedding festivities and is the religious ceremony where the couple will take their wedding vows and be married by a priest. Traditionally, the bride will wear red—in no circumstance should any guest (male or female) wear red. Women will be expected to dress in Indian outfits—I would recommend either a saree (a stretch of fabric arranged over the body as a robe, with one end attached to the waist, while the other end rests over one shoulder as a stole) or lehenga (a form of ankle-length skirt). Men can wear suits and will be given a Safa (a hat made out of a long colourful scarf) to wear.

Is there anything that would be considered poor taste or disrespectful to wear at an Indian wedding?
As suggested, I would avoid wearing red to any and all events—whether you’re a female or male guest. I would also try to wear Indian clothing where possible and, if and when wearing western silhouettes, please keep them modest.

How do you balance tradition with modernity?
I love mixing up Indian looks with a western take to create something unique but also appropriate for the festivities. You can do this by:

1. Pairing Indian outfits with western accessories—consider wearing your lehenga with western bags such as a Lady Dior for a smart and elegant finish, or a small basket bag for something fun.
2. The reverse—western outfits with Indian accessories. Think maximalist, full-length pieces from brands such as Jacquemus, Nadine Merabi, Needle & Thread, and so on, styling them with bangles, heavy jewellery and Indian bags such as pouches. You could also wear an Indian scarf with a jumpsuit or long dress.
3. For something decidedly “fashion”, create your own take on an Indian look by wearing the top of an Indian outfit (the “blouse” as it is called) with a high-waisted skirt or pair of trousers.

Do you have any tips on getting the most wear out of something you might use for an Indian wedding?
I would highly recommend renting your Indian outfits. There is simply little to no value in purchasing low quality pieces from markets for single use, and the prices will still range from upwards of £75. By renting on the By Rotation app, wedding guests can borrow high-end designer and couture Indian outfits which not only look and feel much better to wear, but are also better in terms of your environmental footprint and usually much more cost-effective than making a day trip to purchase expensive, low-quality Indian outfits from said markets. You have the potential to feel like a real-life princess at an Indian wedding, so do it right the first time and make your outfits count.

What about accessories? Any tips on sensible accessory additions?
For handbags, I’d recommend small bags such as pouches, clutches and even smarter bags such as the nano Lady Dior or interestingly-shaped Lulu Guinness and Alaïa bags. Jewellery-wise, I would wear Indian-styled pieces where possible—large earrings, big necklaces, bangles, etc. For added authenticity, I’d also recommend sticking to gold tones. For shoes, as you will most likely be walking and dancing a lot, I would recommend hiding wedges under your lehengas! I absolutely love my Eleanor Wellesley wedges—they give me incredible height but are also very comfortable.

Are there any key colours to consider?
In terms of colour per celebration, my failsafes are shades of green for Mehendi and yellows and oranges for Haldi. Especially for Phere, say it with me—avoid red, white and black.

Is there anything brides would want you to ask permission to wear beforehand?Colours such as red, white and black must be avoided at all wedding ceremonies and events—I wouldn’t even ask! There are so many other beautiful options you can choose from, it shouldn’t be restricting. Whatever you wear I would also try to keep it modest, especially when wearing western outfits (even outside of the official celebrations), to be respectful of elder relatives and other cultures.

Having been a stylist for over ten years, I'm often asked many different fashion questions. The common ones are 'what's on trend this season?' and 'where do you usually shop?', but the most frequently asked questions are always about dresses, in particular, wedding guest dresses. I think this is because a lot of people can find it trickier to put an outfit together for a specific occasion. When Taylor Swift is a guest at a wedding, it's easy to guess whose dress is the second most talked-about (after the bride's, of course). In this case, the wedding was for Swift's longtime friend and producer Jack Antonoff to actress and Chanel ambassador Margaret Qualley. The wedding took place in a New Jersey beach town, and based on the photos I've seen, I'd call it a classic, semi-formal affair—and Swift dressed accordingly, opting for a light-blue lace midi dress by Erdem (which is now on sale, but it's going fast).

The romantic dress, with its corseted bodice and ruffled skirt, is as perfect for a wedding as it gets. And whilst there are many on-trend elements to Swift's dress, it's the balconette detail that makes the most impact, in my opinion at least. Balconette dresses feature bra-style (often underwired) cups, and it's a pretty, lingerie-inspired trend I've seen a lot of lately.

For perhaps the first time in fashion history, women are consciously considering alternative options to buying new when it comes to thinking about what to wear to occasions like a wedding. The plethora of rental services that have popped up over the last few years, the allure of shopping pre-loved (I absolutely love going on a hunt for a vintage designer piece and wearing it with something I already own) and even good old-fashioned borrowing from a friend’s wardrobe have made shopping for a single event feel really outdated.

That’s not to say that there’s no reason for it at all. I ask myself three questions when I shop new to make sure that a piece isn’t a one-and-done kind of deal. Firstly, is this something that could be circular? If you haven’t opted for a rental, for example, is it something that could be rented out after you’ve worn it? Could it even be resold at some point?

Secondly, and related to that point, is it made of a natural material? Exceptions can be made for occasionwear depending on the piece, but as a general rule of thumb, natural is best, as it leaves less of a negative impact once it no longer has use, and it’s far more comfortable (and less sweaty). Thirdly, is the item actually worth its price? Is it made well enough that it will last through a few years worth of wear? As we’ve seen time and again, so many gorgeous garments inspire us to get that cost per wear, but it simply wasn’t designed to fulfil the best of our intentions.

Showing up to a casual wedding in full-glam attire is akin to wearing a turtleneck on a summer's day. It's uncomfortable, a little inappropriate, and you'll probably end up feeling like everyone's staring at you.

Black-tie nuptials are a great opportunity to go all-out (while being mindful about stealing the bride's spotlight), but if the invite expressly states that the dress code is casual, there's most likely a reason. Maybe it's an intimate wedding, and the venue is rustic and laid-back; a parents' back garden, for example, or the local courthouse. You hardly need to buy something new and extravagant for this brand of ceremony. That being said, there's a fine line between casual and too casual—I'm sure it doesn't need to be stated, but please don't show up in jeans and a T-shirt.

Of course, you can still dress up, but aim to keep the frills and embellishments to a minimum and stick to everyday fabrics like cotton and linen. Save the chiffon and organza for another occasion. Footwear is also important, as are the rest of the finishing touches: a cute clutch and gold jewellery get the green light, but feather-trimmed shawl and diamonte-encrusted stilettos are probably a step too far.

A week ago I had no desire to wear dresses. The weather was still hovering under 10°, it was raining most days and it was still dark at 6pm. Fast forward to this week, though, and pretty dresses are all I can think about. I need to make a confession: I'm obsessed with shoes. While trying on new clothes usually gives me changing-room anxiety (will my boobs fit in this shirt? Am I going to be too short for those trousers?), shoes almost always fit and look good. As a fashion editor, I'm constantly looking at the latest styles and considering which will be the biggest trends worth investing in, so people are always asking for my advice. ("Which shoes look best with this dress?" "Can I get away with trainers for work?" The short answer, by the way, is yes.) The truth is I love designer shoes, but I can't always afford them. So my secret to shoe shopping is to look for affordable brands whose shoes have the look and quality of designer styles without the hefty price tag.

A brand that I go back to time and time again is Steve Madden. Whether I'm looking for the perfect party heel or need to quench my thirst for athleisure with a fresh pair of sneakers, Steve Madden's collections are up to the minute when it comes to trends, and look much more expensive than they are. 

But I'm striving to be a more conscious shopper, so I'm really trying to rein in my frivolous, unnecessary purchasing. At the beginning of each season, I think about what I actually need and invest in pieces I can wear for multiple occasions. At Who What Wear, we're big proponents of the capsule wardrobe, which includes not only apparel but shoes, accessories and bags as well.

In light of this, I selected six pairs of shoes from the Steve Madden S/S 23 collection and styled them for every conceivable event that I may attend in the next six months, from my best friend's 30th birthday to a spring wedding, to a dinner party to even a lunch-break post-office run. Each outfit is built entirely around the shoes (and maybe the bags, too) that I'll be wearing this season. Enjoy!

1. OFFICE TRAINERS

Because I spend so much time in the office dashing to and from meetings, I need my footwear to be comfortable. Thankfully, we no longer live in a time when workwear is synonymous with pencil skirts and court shoes (although that can still be a great look), so my go-to is tailoring with fresh trainers. I'll wear these sneakers with a suit to give a more casual edge, and when they've become too worn-in to be office-appropriate, I'll retire them to weekend wear. (Pro tip: Use baby wipes to clean them so they last as long as possible.) This particular two-piece suit is also Steve Madden. It has an oversized fit, which is what I always look for—I hate feeling restricted in a fitted blazer!

2. OCCASION HEELS

Are you attending a wedding or heading off to the races? Is your summer calendar essentially bursting with dressier occasions? Mine too. May I present you with the Lucent: a black satin heel with a jewelled embellishment. Although it comes in an array of bold colours, this classic black goes with everything I already own. Also, is it just me, or do these shoes have Carrie Bradshaw's name written all over them? 3. SPRING SANDALS

Nothing says spring to me like a skirt, a linen shirt and a pair of comfortable heels. And the Jetfuel Sandals are exactly that. When I'm going out, I like to go all out. Call me attention-seeking, but there's a place for statement shoes. For me, that is a big celebratory occasion, such as a big birthday or a hen party. This look is perfect for date nights or dinner parties. Silver is this year's metallic of choice, so double down on it with the Bglowing Bag. Normally, I say to hell with fashion "rules," but a wedding is certainly one place where I'll happily abide by tradition as a guest—after all, it's not my day to shine. The unspoken guidelines include not wearing white and not upstaging the couple, and they're easy enough to follow for one evening.

That said, when the groom specifically asks you to wear white and dresses you in his own designs, that's a whole different story. This was clearly the case at the wedding of designer Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marco Maestri in Charleval, France. Nearly all of the attendees wore white to the celebrity-packed event, and the lucky ones, including Dua Lipa, were dressed by Jacquemus himself. Her completely sheer, underwear-exposing dress transformed in my mind from a rule breaker to the perfect French fashion moment.
