Plus, designer vintage pieces are often better quality than their modern counterparts; some luxury brands have stopped using high-quality metals in favour of plated alternatives to reduce production costs, though that's not reflected in the hefty price tag. The Gucci Play Watch has taken the original concept of the '80s Bezel Play Watch and reimagined it through a contemporary lens. In other words, it's had a few design modifications over the past 40 years, as well as a whopping £2000 price increase.

How do I know this? Well, my generous mum gifted me her original, which my dad bought her one Christmas in the early '80s for under £200. Suffice to say, it would be near impossible to find a luxury designer watch for that price now, even on resale sites.

What Are the Differences Between the 2026 Gucci Play Watch and the Original '80s Design?

The new-generation Gucci Play Watch honours the debut creation. It features a bangle-like strap, round face and interchangeable bezels, much like the '80s classic. However, there are subtle differences. The new version boasts a slightly larger face that measures 28mm, a thicker strap with hinges to make it easier to slip onto the wrist, whereas the original has a fixed slimline bangle. The fastening has also been modified; the click-ball back replaces the classic hook closure.

The gold-plated stainless-steel watch still features the distinct interchangeable bezel faces. However, the material has been refined; it's now made of durable ceramic rather than the former featherlight—yet fragile—acrylic. The new faces have a slight pearlescent shimmer, whereas the original bezels are a bold opaque colour.

Whilst we're on the topic of faces, the new iteration of the Gucci Play Watch has fewer bezels (seven instead of the original 11). Thanks to my mum's safekeeping, I know the original included white, black, lilac, deep purple, light blue, navy blue, burgundy, yellow, pink and red, as well as Gucci's signature green with a red-stripe bezel. The new version only includes the signature green-and-red stripe, as well as block green, red, black, white, lilac and navy blue.

Fast forward 40 years from the first launch, and Gucci officially re-released the Play Watch in November 2025, thanks to rising demand for the original. "At the same time, there’s a romantic, Victorian-inspired undercurrent that includes military-style jackets, ruffled shirts and decorative detailing, she continues. "Translating this to watches, I expect to see strong colours, particularly coloured dials, such as deep emerald green and rich burgundies to be a major trend, as well as a continued appetite for bold, 80s-inspired models like a Rolex Day Date or a Cartier Santos Dumont," Urbinati adds.

However, for those who were swept up in the mania surrounding the Cartier Panthère over the last twelve months, fear not. Minimalism and vintage-inspired silhouettes still will reign supreme in 2026, albeit styled with a few more flourishes than anything too austere and stealthily wealthy. At least, that’s what Pia Mance, the Melbourne-born founder and creative director of Los Angeles-based accessories brand Heaven Mayhem, says. “Vintage, timeless pieces will always be in style, because vintage never truly goes out of fashion,” Mance explains.

Ultimately, the beauty of time is its mutability. The trend cycle will constantly revolve, meaning that styles that aren’t currently in now will find their way back into style. Likewise, the pieces that have cultural capital now might lose relevance, only to gain it back in a matter of years once a new generation rediscovers it.

“Part of the reason why we've been seeing a rise in small watches for men and women is because they're kind of different from what's on the primary market, so you see people going to thrift stores and scouring The Real Real to find these really edgy and individualistic pieces.

“You should also think about what metal you wear. If you’re more of a white metal person, you would go with steel or yellow gold,” Wallner says. “Size does factor in, too,” she continues. “It might be nice to buy a really, really huge watch, but practically, you should consider how it sits on your wrist. I think it's bringing more women, too, because fashion brands get women. The customer base is already there, they're already switched on and engaged.”

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. Wallner is a writer and watch expert who serves as a "femme-forward resource", as she says herself, under the name Dimepiece. Launched in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic, Wallner disrupted the industry through her insightful, approachable and colloquial commentary at a time when horology wasn’t necessarily pandering to female consumers. This scarcity left space for Wallner to fill, which she did with wit, humour and an eagle eye for celebrity watch-spotting and identifying the next most covetable style.

Despite never owning a watch while running the account—a blight she swiftly corrected with the purchase of a Cartier Tank Française to commemorate the platform’s first anniversary and her 31st birthday—Wallner tells me over Zoom from her apartment in New York that it was the infrequently discussed Baignoire that piqued her interest.

The History of the Cartier Baignoire Watch

Created in 1912, the Cartier Baignoire was born into obscurity after Louis Cartier, the grandson of the brand’s founder Louis-François Cartier, designed the shape for Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. The rounded edges and petite face were quite revolutionary for the time, and in 1958, it went into production before being officially baptised as the Baignoire in 1974, earning the support of early adopters like French New Wave actress Jeanne Moreau by direct consequence. "A year and a half before starting Dimepiece, a friend of mine who I worked with at Sotheby's introduced me to Alan Bedwell, a professional watch dealer who goes by Foundwell," Wallner explains.

"He’s been in the business for 20 years, and on our first watch 'date', he came with a little pouch of ladies' watches to do a show and tell. Amongst those watches was the Cartier Baignoire, which I had never seen or heard of before, even though I had done a lot of research. I was like, 'What is this watch? It's so cute. I'm obsessed.' He explained it was a Cartier Baignoire and that it was named after a bathtub. I looked into it and was so surprised by the fact that, despite Catherine Deneuve wearing it and having this cool '60s design, nobody was talking about it.

"So, I started posting about it being like, 'Oh my god, the Cartier Baignoire is so cute, how come nobody told me!' Other people started to notice it, too, after I started calling it out. At the time, those watches were so undervalued on the secondary market. Nobody really cared about them or wanted them, which is why Alan had his collection for, like, ever."

Wallner’s publicity for the Baignoire certainly bolstered its desirability in the space, and it was a little over a year later that Cartier cemented this online fervour with a splashy release.

"Cartier was kind of watching what was unfolding online, and so in 2023 at Watches and Wonders [an annual trade event held in Geneva], their big release that year was the Baignoire on the bangle. It was also like the reintroduction of the Baignoire into the Cartier stable. That watch just took off after that. The Baignoire got the wait-list treatment a lot of popular men's watches get. It became really hard to purchase. You couldn’t just go into the Cartier store and buy the watch because it's sold out, so all these people were like, 'How do I get this watch?'

"That moment was the first time in recent history when a lady's watch was so coveted. The Baignoire bangle has all these elements that nod to Cartier’s history as a jewellery maker, and when [it was unveiling] it, the brand explained that it was designed to be stacked, which was surprising to hear because stacking is almost a taboo subject in the watch industry. So I thought, 'Oh, they really thought about women and how women like to wear watches when they were creating this."

If anyone in Hollywood exudes pure luxury and grace, it's Nicole Kidman. And no, I'm not hearing any arguments. The Australian actress has, for decades now, dressed (and acted) with understated glamour and sophistication at the forefront, whether she's at the Met Gala in a re-created Balenciaga gown from the 1950s or on set in a timeless piece of outerwear. (Her characters always have the chicest coats.) Knowing that, I wasn't the least bit surprised to find her walking the red carpet at an Omega event in Paris wearing this year's most elegant skirt trend. Oh, and did I mention it was held in her honour? No one does it like she does—period.

The event, called Her Time, held at Omega House on Monday during the 2024 Paris Games, was meant to bring women's style into the spotlight, according to a press release. As a longtime ambassador of Omega, the official timekeeper of the Olympics, Kidman was the guest of honour, attending alongside her daughter Sunday.

For the occasion, Kidman kept her look fairly simple, as she so often does, in a white short-sleeve cropped tee by Valentino and a matching A-line skirt. She balanced out the duo with white-and-red pumps by Charles & Keith and an exclusive rose-gold De Ville Prestige watch (casual).

There was a time not so long ago when watches were a rare sight in the fashion world, or, you could argue, on women at all. In fact, you might assume that a wristwatch is traditionally a men's accessory, but this isn't the case. Whilst pocket watches were a popular item for a man to carry, it wasn't until 1810 when the first ever wristwatch was created for the Queen of Naples that the watch as we've come to know it today was born. Fast forward to the invention of the mobile phone and you could say that watches became, well, not entirely obsolete, but hardly essential. I must confess, I haven't worn a watch since the day I unwrapped my Nokia 3210 in 2000. 

With a surge in technology came the smartwatch—wristwear you could sync to your even smarter phone, which in one way or another, put watches back on the map for many of us. Of course, people have always been buying watches, but the focus (unless housing microchips) swiftly switched from function to form. Those who wore "un-smart" watches did so for aesthetics and status, and so the market for appeasing styles grew.

Catalogued alongside Tiffany diamonds, Louis Vuitton bags and other peak-luxury items, many watches have become status symbols in their own right. Rolex, Cartier, IWC, Omega—owners of such timepieces belong to a very exclusive club, which makes them all the more desirable. I remember reading an article about how the purchase of fine jewellery soared during and immediately after the pandemic, as those with the budget to play with found themselves looking to make key investments rather than frivolous designer purchases. This has made the luxury watch market—and subsequent resale market—all the more buoyant. 

The wider effect of this? Watches are very much back in fashion, and for the first time in my life, I would really like to own one myself. This sentiment is one shared by others within the fashion industry. A couple of years ago, I would have been hard-pressed to find anyone of stylish note wearing a watch in plain sight (at least not without their Instagram caption being finished with "#ad"). Now, my feed is full of editors and influencers who have made the watch an integral part of their signature style. The quiet-luxury, old-money and Birkin mom aesthetics all speak to the desire not just to be wealthy, but to look wealthy. And a watch? It has a big part to play here. A watch can be a whisper of wealth, or in some instances, a mirage of wealth.

You see, choosing an expensive-looking watch doesn't immediately equate to spending a fortune. Of course, if you have the means to invest in one of the aforementioned watch brands then if I were in your shoes, I likely would, too. However, I do believe that there are four 2024 watch trends for women that give high luxury, even if you're working with a tighter budget.

1. YELLOW GOLD

Style Notes: At one point in my life I would have considered a gold watch gaudy, and they definitely can be. But with an otherwise pared-back outfit, a neutral manicure and some general style flair, they can look incredibly luxe.

Style Notes: When you picture a watch, you'll likely conjure a style with a round face. That's no surprise—they are the most common type. However, over the years, square watches have gained more of a following thanks to both heritage brands that have become known for the shape, as well as new brands looking to make their mark.

Arguably more recognisable because of their less common face, most of the square-dial watches I'm seeing usually come with a polished leather strap, though there are metal options, too. Why not tick off two 2024 watch trends in one swoop with a gold face?

3. LARGE FACE

Style Notes: Gone are the days when dainty watches were a woman's only option. Now, I'd argue that some of the coolest watches out there are those with cumbersome straps and big, round dials, like the sort your dad might own. Silver is the colour to consider here—watches of this size in gold would run the risk of looking ostentatious, which is the last thing you want to achieve. 

One of Who What Wear's U.S. editors, Eliza Huber, regularly wears a watch of such ilk. "One trick to styling a men's[-style] watch is to stick with cases that are 40 millimetres or below," she advises. "Anything larger than that tends to be overly showy; a trait that's best avoided, especially for an everyday watch." Agreed.

4. LEATHER STRAP

Style Notes: I've already pinpointed the fact that leather-strap watches are a recurring theme this season, but they aren't mutually exclusive to square dials. Perhaps more "wearable" than a full metal style, leather straps are generally subtler in nature and won't pull focus from the rest of your look. 

Whether you opt for a mock croc, glossy or aged leather finish, look for watches with minimal detailing on the dial to further push their elegant narrative.

There’s no denying that at Who What Wear we love the French women style. French women have mastered effortless elegance like no other–and whilst the clichè pieces such a breton tops, berets and red lipstick are all staples, there are others things in their arsenal that we look to too. Neat blazers, cute cardigans and expensive-looking denim (that always somehow seems to fit as if it was made for the very person wearing it) are other must-have wardrobe essentials. But there’s one small addition that people often overlook: Watches. 

I’ve been looking to invest in a watch for a while as I have a big birthday coming up and thought this would be the perfect excuse to treat myself. The thing is though, it’s a tough decision to make, because whilst I may change a coat, a pair of shoes or a bag depending on my outfit, the occasion or the weather, the watch I buy really needs to pair with everything. Also, despite being a shopping expert, I’m admittedly a bit of a watch novice.

Which is why I’m looking to the style set that are known for their timeless capsule wardrobes as a guide. I don’t want a statement piece or a fleeting accessory ‘du jour,’ I want a forever timepiece that will go with everything. Style Notes: When considering French-made watches, the brand that always comes to mind is Cartier. In fact, this isn't limited to France or with French women–with Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, Gwyneth Paltrow and many, many more having be known to sport the Cartier Panthère, Tank and Ballon Bleu styles over the years. 

2. Classic Metals Rule

Style Notes: Don't have a Cartier budget? Perhaps you want to try a new style but don't want to invest too heavily? No problem–there are so many affordable brands offering elegant designer-looking watches that have the same traditional silver/gold setting. From Citizen to Rotary and Tissot, to Instagram favourites, Charlie Paris and Daniel Wellington, there are plenty out there that prove you don't have to break the bank to stay on time.

3. Parisians Love Vintage

Style Notes: It's certainly no secret that Paris is home to some of the best vintage shops, and Parisians are some of the most experienced when it comes to second-hand sourcing. If you're looking for something unique, vintage may be the best option. From designer to lesser-known brands, Goldsmiths have an excellent vintage selection, and what's more is it's sustainable too!

Style Notes: When it comes to French style–and I really can't stress this enough–less is always more. This same rule applies for watches. A timepiece doesn't need to be encrusted with diamonds to shine, nor does it a coloured face and pattern. Don't go too oversized, rather something that fits your wrist well and compliments your skin tone. The idea is to own something that blends in, or really ties together, everything else you're wearing.

Style Notes: Whilst many look to silver, gold and stainless steel link straps, leather is also a popular choice, and one I personally think is more classic. Black leather with gold hardware is a favourite, but silver and tan leather are equally chic. Again, we're talking dainty rather than chunky.

Style Notes: With luxury watches, you can either opt for brands that specialise in timepieces, or high-end designers that offer them as part of their wider accessories collection. Whilst some will tell you those that specialise in watches will have better accuracy, quality and technology, and luxury houses will offer have the fashion-forward 'look', nowadays you can expect the same level of accuracy and quality of material anywhere with a high price tag. And if you want to go all out on the French style, then it makes sense to invest in French brands– so look to Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Breguet and so on.

3. THE OVERSIZED WATCH

Style Notes: After decades of women's watches traditionally possessing petite faces and slender straps, the XL watch has become increasingly popular since the late nineties/early 2000s. So much so, before this time women were often purchasing men's styles for a more dramatic effect on their wrist. Today, most of the popular watch models will come in 36mm (the standard diameter you should look out for if you're wanting a chunkier style), as well as a smaller option.

4. THE MAILLE MILLANAISE STRAP

Style Notes: The Maille Milanaise strap is the underdog when it comes to chic watches. The mesh metal is a pretty universal style, often offered unisex or appearing in both men's and women's collections, and is fuss-free style that attracts many minimalists out there. 5. THE SMART WATCH

Style Notes: See, smart watches can be cool! Proved sublimely by fashion writer Amelia Madden, this tech accessory regularly causes quite a divisive conversation when brought up in fashion offices. Where some editors love them, and others love to hate them, if you're a fan like Amelia, take note and don't try to style it to your outfit, rather find the strap you like and pair it with anything and everything in your wardrobe.

6. THE LINK STRAP

Style Notes: Whether it's Chanel's iconic leather chain that reminisce of their handbags, or simple gold styles from Coach, the interwoven link bracelet strap is a watch trend that has seen exponential growth in the last two years. We can thank celebrities like Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid for this, as well as Princess Diana back in the day, who are often seen styling a Cartier Panthère and others similar. A timepiece that is also like a bracelet or cuff, and can be worn with the face placed on the inside or outside of the wrist, this is watch wearing at its finest. Denise Selby asserts that “Link strap watches with stylish tapered bracelets bring a hint of luxury to the everyday. Those who know me will tell you I’m not very good at timekeeping. I am that friend who texts saying, "Sooo sorry. I’m just leaving now,” when actually I’ve just got out of the shower. I don’t really have a good excuse. Not only do I have the time on my phone, microwave, oven and wall clock, but also there is hardly a shortage of spectacular watches on the market that, if nothing else, serve the single purpose of getting you out of bed, into work and wherever you need to be in an orderly, calm fashion. Of course, that’s not their only purpose—they are also pretty. 

Since turning 30, I feel like I’ve really entered adulthood. Not by law, but in the much, much more real sense that I now do things like take my makeup off before bed, avoid entering my overdraft and actually pay a TV licence. And because being persistently seven to 12 minutes late is a fundamental personality flaw that doesn’t belong in your 30s, I recently made the decision to invest in a watch that I intend to cherish for the rest of my life.

After scouring many (and I mean many) websites, I’ve found myself looking to celebrities whose style I've always admired, asking myself, "If Rihanna can rock a Rolex, why can’t I?” Whilst I want a classic piece, I also want to be able to style it in a fashion-forward way. Whereas Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Reese Witherspoon demonstrate that casual, pared-back watch wearing, Simone Ashley in TAG Heuer is the answer to dressed-up styling. 

Such an investment piece—one that ought to last a lifetime—requires you to figure out who you are as a watch wearer. Are you a chunky-gold-link-strap person like Jennifer Lopez? Style notes: Hadid isn't the only one to love this classic French watch; Dua Lipa, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow are just a few of the other icons who have been seen sporting this timepiece over the years. But the latest way to wear it? With the face on the inside of the wrist. Well, if Bella's doing it, then so will I.

2. RIHANNA, CHOPARD HAPPY SPORT

Style notes: Where do I begin with this? I'm absolutely floored by this look. Leave it to Rihanna to pair a Chopard 18-karat white-gold diamond-encrusted watch with, you guessed it, more sparkle! The Balenciaga bag, the rhinestone pink shirt… and are those crystal-embellished socks? Leg warmers? Or perhaps part of these fluffy shoes? Whatever it is, I'm definitely into it. Estimated at a cool $130,000, Chopard's Happy Sport series includes spectacular pieces with and without diamonds at a lower (albeit still very high) price point, but please note: Jewelled socks not included. 

3. REESE WITHERSPOON, APPLE WATCH

Style notes: I love Reese Witherspoon. I mean, honestly, who doesn't? Whilst I don't know her personally, she definitely seems like the type of person who always arrives three minutes early to any engagement and never fails to count her steps. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that she opts for an Apple Watch. To spoil yourself, go Hermès. But to channel Elle Woods? Opt for pink.

4. MIA REGAN, TAG HEUER AQUARACER

Style notes: Mia Regan has to be one of, if not the, coolest Gen Z people around. Whenever I see her show off a new outfit on TikTok, which is usually Y2K-inspired, I immediately open a tab and google where I can get it. In other words, whatever she wears, there's a high chance I'll want to wear it. Here, in Saint-Tropez, she wears TAG Heuer, and I can't get enough of how it matches the embellishments on her dress. Two points for coordination, Mia. 

5. JENNIFER LOPEZ, ROLEX DAY-DATE

Style notes: J.Lo on honeymoon in Paris has been possibly the celebrity moment of 2022. Whilst everyone was focussed on her take on French style, I was taking into account her accessories. Two of which happened to be a blue Birkin and a Rolex (ah, that classic combination). It goes without saying that Rolexes are the crème de la crème of the watch world, so one of these definitely makes the wish list. 

6. DINA ASHER-SMITH, HUBLOT CLASSIC FUSION

Style notes: You may be wondering, Does the fastest woman on record really need a watch? Of course she does! Dina Asher-Smith's Hublot Classic Fusion is perfect for those looking for a sportier timepiece. With a refined titanium face and rubber strap, it's less ostentatious than other styles, but as Asher-Smith demonstrates so well, all you need is a black gown, some spectacular jewels, a red carpet et voilà! It's fancy. 

7. JENNIFER ANISTON, CHOPARD EAGLE

Style notes: I can't get enough of Jennifer Aniston's effortless elegance. To me, she is the older sister to Mary-Kate and Ashley—a pioneer of the neutral palette and the OG when it comes to the noughties vest-top-and-cargo-pants look that we've all grown to love again. And is it just me, or do her characters all seem to resemble her in IRL? Here, she's snapped between takes on The Morning Show, and we're not sure if she's playing her character, Alex Levy, or just herself. Either way, I can't help but love this Chopard Eagle—a classic in the link-watch roster.

8. SIMONE ASHLEY, TAG HEUER CARRERA

Style notes: Bridgerton fans, take note! Actress Simone Ashley serves subtle sophistication with a classic TAG Heuer Carrera. Much unlike the costume design in her breakthrough role in the period drama, the Carrera is all about is sleek, slick and understated elegance, with a dash of sparkle with the diamond hour markers.

For some, the past 18 months or so has proven to be a good time to invest in the kind of wardrobe additions that you'll not only enjoy wearing right away, but that you'll also love forever. With disposable income re-routing from holidays or dinners out to considered fashion and accessory purchases, there has been a noticeable rise reported by many luxury brands and e-tailers in categories such as leather-goods, fine jewellery and watches. And the tail-end of 2021 has seen quite the peak in the latter two: According to shopping app LYST, over the past three months, there has been "a rise in searches for gold fine jewellery; they’re currently up 23% month-on-month. Although necklaces and earrings are the most popular categories at the moment, searches for Cartier’s bracelets have increased 26% since the start of October.”

Our desire to cherry pick pieces that speak to our personalities and that we will always adore and cherish is stronger than ever. NET-A-PORTER's Senior Market Editor, Libby Page says, "Customers have been looking for truly special, timeless investment pieces that can be treasured for the long-term. They want pieces they can ‘buy now and wear forever’… Chain necklaces, heritage watches by the likes of Cartier and Hermès, signet rings, zodiac pendants by Foundrae and delicate hoops earrings by the likes of Jessica McCormack are pieces that have that personal touch and can be worn every day."

It hasn't been plain sailing for all parts of the jewellery sector since the start of the pandemic. In fact, according to McKinsey, "a global industry with combined annual sales of over $329 billion in 2019, fine jewellery ($280 billion) and watches ($49 billion) are highly significant industries in terms of their contribution to global business. The fine jewellery and watch industries suffered revenue declines of 10 to 15 and 25 to 30 percent respectively”. At a legacy brand level many companies didn’t have the digital infrastructure to support online-only sales and so, in stepped other, more nimble, independent, demi-fine brands who could pivot quickly and decisively. Many of these reported triple figured growth as we, the consumer looked for ways to jazz up our looks whilst we were all stuck at home.

I’ve spoken to the experts including buyers, designers and retailers for their breakdown of what we were all buying in 2021 across watches, fine and demi-fine jewellery, because these bubbling-up trends are all solid indicators of what will still be going strong for 2022. So, here are the 7 luxury jewellery and watch trends you need to look out for…

Luxe beads are everywhere and this shows no signs of dissipating in either the fine or demi-fine jewellery categories. London-based jeweller and queen of nostalgic styles, Roxanne First launched her "Bead for your Bestie” campaign in January 2021, giving customers a fun way to connect with their BFF by creating and sending a friendship bracelet in the post. 

Carolina Bucci’s Forte beads offer a similar, more elevated offering (exclusively semi-precious stones here) showing us that just because we’re grown up and wearing fine jewellery doesn't mean we can't have a bit of fun. Bracelets are knotted by hand by the wearer and come with Bucci’s signature woven gold thread.

Celebrity favourite, Mateo has added bold turquoise strands to his newest collection. Founder Matthew Harris found inspiration from his "true island boy” upbringing where he was always to be found wearing a beaded necklace or anklet. Meanwhile, over at Threads Styling, Ananya has been the biggest brand in this category with their customers enjoying the bespoke options available to them through Personal Shoppers. These pieces are über luxe, fun and add a bit of texture to your look. Look at the Threads Jewels Instagram for more inspiration—matching your Anaya to your Rolex is a whole microtrend in itself, and they are all but sold out everywhere you look!

For years we’ve been obsessed with dainty stacking rings and delicate eternity bands. There is, without doubt, a change in the air, led in part by US-based jewellers Brent Neale and Kirsty Stone at Retrouvai.

Neale was a design director at Kara Ross so knows her way around the statement jewel. The master of the gemstone cocktail ring, her bold, chunky yellow gold styles with rub over set gems are pure pleasure on the eye (and are hugely popular with her global stockists like NET-A-PORTER where she regularly sells out).

Mie Ejdrup, co-founder of FineMatter (a new jewellery sales platform that focuses on the independent jeweller) sees the cocktail ring as the ultimate self gifting piece—a way to celebrate empowerment, self-expression and independence. The ring we don’t have to wait for someone to give us.

Randi Molofsky, Co-Founder of For Future Reference—a boutique PR and sales agency that specialises in fine jewellery—tells me "The coloured gemstone cocktail ring is one of our biggest sellers, especially in chunky shapes set in yellow gold. We’re really seeing our clients looking for something unique —whether it’s a fancy-cut stone, an oversized silhouette or even an unusual gem."

I asked jeweller Lauren Rubinski what she thought, as she has several diamond pavé cocktail rings as well as a solid gold puffy heart on it’s way for 2022. She gave me a styling tip: she told me to wear mine on my pinky ring for a decadent, chic yet rock 'n' roll look.

I’ve seen a handful of great offerings from demi-fine brands Daphine and Otiumberg whose Gisele and Diamond Burr rings are crying out to be layered up for an even more unique look. UK-based independent jeweller/makers Jessie Thomas and Minka Jewels are great places to source your own bespoke creation.

The State of Fashion (a watches and jewellery report published by Business of Fashion in July 2021) reported that, "the premium to ultra-luxury watch industry will see value reshuffle across geographies, channels and consumer segments in the next five years.” They predict that, "revenue will transfer from retailer to watch makers as direct-to-consumer business models take centre stage, while the pre-owned watch market is set to become the industry’s fastest growing segment. This prediction is supported by Vestiaire Collective who recently reported a spike in searches for Rolex (+18%) and Omega (+12%). In essence, all signs points towards a resurgence in truly timeless watch styles. 

We are seeing a strong desire to return to the classics with key heritage brands like Cartier and Hermès at the fore. NET-A-PORTER confirmed to me that they have seen robust performance with the "Classic Stainless Steel Ballon Bleus from Cartier and the Heure H by Hermes which is a perfect price point for customers new to watches.” 

As an extension of this trend, however, my sources at Threads Styling, NET A PORTER, MATCHESFASHION and Browns all told me about a surge in demand for limited edition and one-off timepieces. The designer on everyone’s lips is jeweller Jacquie Aiche with her custom vintage watches. She restores and revamps key styles from Rolex and Cartier by adding gemstones, a custom leather strap or hand painted imagery. Look out for her exclusive Zodiac collection which has arrived just in time for a very fancy Christmas.

Holly Harding, Buying Manager of Non-Apparel at Browns says "Re-imagined watches really resonate with our customers, from the likes of Lizzie Mandler (as well as Aiche). What makes these so appealing is that they are either completely individual or in limited supply."

Threads Styling's Sophie Quy, Executive Vice- President Brands, echoes this sentiment, reporting requests for these type of pieces rising significantly this year, over 100% YoY, with clients asking for unique colour and detail combinations that reflect their personal sense of style. Threads also offers customers the opportunity to play designer for the day with full customisable timepieces like the Threads x Wildman exclusive.

This year I have seen an influx of brands branching out to experiment with brightly coloured enamel. Page tells me that "colour continues to have a powerful impact in the world of fine jewelry, whether it be semi or precious stones, inlay details or splashes of enamel we are still seeing mood lifting pieces across the board. This ‘more is more’ attitude is also across the way we style jewellery, via the art of layering chains and necklaces, to ear stacks."

The star jeweller in this category is Bea Bongiasca whose Vine ring is a sell-out hit with all the retailers I spoke to. Celebrities and shoppers alike have fallen for her asymmetric, squiggles topped with semi-precious stones. A bit Pop Art, a bit Memphis, Kim Kardashian, Florence Pugh, Beyonce and Dua Lipa are all fans.

US brand, Fry Powers is new to MATCHESFASHION and already in their best-selling jewellery brand list. Launched in 2018 by Alison Fry, this brand initially caught my eye on celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes (who always has an excellent #curatedear situation going on). They sell rings and earrings in mini collection sets so you rock an instant stacked look. Other brands with a strong enamel offering are Boochier and Melissa Kaye.

A key trend has been percolating away in the background for a couple of years but this year has found a real focus is our obsession with heavy yellow gold chains. Put it down to #zoomlife it would appear we want people to really SEE our jewellery.

Fashion Icons like Rosie Huntington-Whitely are rarely seen without a chunky gold chain necklace and it seems to be the key item for those who choose a tonal, pared back fashion aesthetic. A deep, (deep) dive into Rosie's Instagram tells me that she rotates a 18kt gold Tiffany City Hardwear graduated link necklace or two with a Lauren Rubinski Large necklace, Medium and Extra Large necklace (she has several from the brand) in 14kt gold and a slightly daintier Jessica McCormack Ball ‘n Chain necklace. I’ve spied some Bottega thrown in there for good measure too. Honestly, whilst we’re on Rosie—I’m dubbing her the new Elizabeth Taylor for her spot on adornment choices and her championing of independent jewellery brands.

All of my experts tell me that Lauren Rubinski is the gold (sorry!) standard when it comes to the chunky chain—her pieces sell out regularly and are famed for their large, hollow links which contributes to their super light, easy wearability. Rubinski herself tells me "they are great investment pieces, go with everything and are a true wardrobe staple.” 

If solid gold is cost prohibitive there are so many amazing options in the demi-fine category. Missoma gave us their Axiom chain in 2019 and have been serving strong chain looks ever since. They have myriad options with detachable pendants to add to create an even more maximalist look. Another leader in this category is Aligheri, with oversized, blown out links in a more rustic style. 

Jewels that resemble tiny pieces of art appear to have been resonating well with consumers. Cecily Motely, founder of London jewellery brand, Motley reveals that their collaboration with artist Zak Seinman which launched in October 2021 is already sitting in their top five best sellers for the whole year. Crafted in 18k gold vermeil, the Gold Whoosh Hoop Earrings use an innovative electroforming technique to mimic an inflatable design. The success of this along with brands like Completedworks, Anita Ko and Carlotte Chesnais demonstrate our desire for a bolder, more daring look.

Harvey Nichols Contemporary Accessories and Jewellery Buyer, Kathryn Tan tells me that Completedworks was one of their best-selling brands this year with their pearl Wibble Wobble earrings marked as being a best seller with their clients and currently sold out.

Newly picked up by NET-A-PORTER and Liberty for this season is independent demi-fine brand, By Pariah whose sculptural Sabine Hoops are part oyster shell, mermaid chic and part scalloped satellite dish. A self confessed "lazy-dresser”, founder, Sophie Karg has created a collection of jewels for women who are comfortable letting their jewellery take centre stage. Slink into your black slip dress and go.

The way we wear jewellery now is so exciting. We mix our costume with fine and demi-fine. We have multiple piercings and layer several chains on top of each other (search #neckmess and find 109k posts for inspiration). We use our jewellery as a way to communicate—to show who we love, what month we were born, our rising sign, that we are searching for love (or have already found it).

Browns have seen the trend of "jewellery with meaning" become more and more prevalent; whether this be through initials and numbers, or spirituality and symbolism from brands like Foundrae. Tanika Wisdom, Buyer at MATCHESFASHION has 'curated a strong edit of uplifting, joyful pieces from colourful gemstones, to positive messaging and healing crystals." This is a sentiment shared by Quy: "The uplift in mood boosting jewellery over the summer has shown no sign of slowing down. Also trending are crystals, gems and talismans with the most-sought after brands including Harwell Godfrey, Ananya and Marie Lichtenberg.|

Roxanne First has made gemstones and their power a cornerstone of her brand. She told me, "these materials have an energy (as everything does) and this energy has a certain magic to it. RF vibes is about education on the materials we use in our pieces—and if it is not for you, that's totally cool and you appreciate the piece for it's beauty—however, if you believe these materials do have the ability to help heal, focus or soothe, then great!”

And if crystals and gems are a bit too woo-woo for you, First has recently launched an It’s Ok Edit which is a dedicated homage to… the smiley. These pieces feature smiley faces set with diamonds. She explains, " : ) is widely regarded as the international symbol of happiness, the simple design is one of the most ubiquitous images of the 21st Century— understood in most cultures and languages around the world. If one can wear it on a T-shirt, send it in a text—why not create one in diamonds? Happy days always.”

"The first thing I did was paint the boat pink," Angela Pham says on a chilly Friday morning at her property in upstate New York. The tiny but mighty 800-square-foot cottage is tucked away in a lush neighborhood a little over two hours outside of Manhattan, in a town that's definitely at risk of becoming something of a place to be for cool, Hamptons-averse New Yorkers. Rhinebeck is just far enough outside of the city to forget what it’s like to have car horns and sirens as the soundtrack to your life, but just close enough to bring your major Manhattan wardrobe with you (in Angela’s case, we're talking the kind of to-die-for vintage it seems impossible to find, Gucci timepieces, and anything else that fits the criteria of eclectic yet timeless).

Pham is a photographer by trade, known around town for snapping the chicest NYC parties (like, I don’t know, just the Met Gala) as well as shooting products and people for an array of fashion and lifestyle brands. But it's no surprise how often she finds herself in front of the camera due to her bold, inventive style. She also appeared on Bravo TV's reality series Gallery Girls back in 2012, which is exactly the kind of hilarious fun fact that makes her quirky and relatable in the very best way. Beyond getting the inside scoop on all things #phamcottage, including the inspiration behind her bubblegum pink house, I set out to answer the eternal fashion-girl question: If you wear an amazing outfit and no one’s around to see it, does it even count? The answer may lie in her Instagram feed, where it’s apparent that watering her lawn in statement pink suiting at 10 a.m. has really found an audience. Her polished-eccentric style delivers no matter the time or the place (or who's watching for that matter).

Anyone who’s ever lived in New York (or any other fast-paced city) knows that time is everyone's most valuable commodity. "When I’m at the cottage, I check my watch five times a day, but in NYC, I check it at least 30 times,” Pham says. She continues, "When I moved out from California, I quickly became overwhelmed with city life—the subway stairs, the spitting passersby, the incessant car honking… Driving north, I can feel that anxiety in my shoulders melt away (unless I'm the one driving, in which case I'm white-knuckling the narrow Taconic roads)."

Pham became intrigued by the idea of investing in real estate five years ago after reading the millennial finance blog Afford Anything, which she says made it feel accessible and ultimately a no-brainer decision. But where to start? "The journey was really one of my favourite parts and dating an architect made everything feel possible and less daunting,” she says of the process. "I fell in love with a Federal-style mansion in Catskill, an eight-acre land parcel in Phoenicia, a handsome mixed-use brick building in Saugerties,” and almost pulled the trigger on all of them.

Her hesitation, however, led her to the lakeside property she ended up purchasing. "I scooped it up faster than a vintage camel coat on a thrift store rack,” she says.

Next to her cottage, I’m naturally most intrigued by Pham’s style sensibilities. I’m surprised to learn that her childhood was actually deprived of fashion, not only because she was an uninterested tomboy but due to her mother's strict view on "frivolous” things like clothing. Of course, she eventually rebelled and became the unabashedly over-the-top, vintage-loving "fashion girl” who does some light gardening in the middle of the afternoon while wearing a party dress (same).

While Pham views her upstate abode as a work in progress, explaining, "A house is a living thing, and the fixing up never ends," it's obvious to me what makes this place so special. It's quiet without feeling isolated, sits atop a beautiful lake, and is a quick drive from a charming Gilmore Girls–esque (as Pham describes it) village.

Pham explains to me that her goal when getting dressed is to make people smile with what she wears. "It takes me about 30 minutes to get ready; it's not a process I love to draw out, but the best part is that it allows me to physicalize my mood. If I'm feeling especially confident, I'll go for the six-inch heels and the structured trench. If I'm feeling lazy, I opt out of getting dressed altogether and stay naked until noon."

I'm delighted to discover that this stylish city girl doesn't leave her fantastical wardrobe behind while at the cottage. In fact, it's quite the opposite. "My style becomes more IDGAF upstate because there is absolutely no one judging up here," says Pham.

Once dressed, how does Pham actually spend her time upstate? She says the greatest luxury is having the time to actually read and digest a full New Yorker article in print. DIAMONDS

"The best way to clean diamonds is with a mild detergent," reveals Links of London's rep. "You can purchase diamond specific formulas but gentle detergents such as baby shampoo also work wonders. Using it with a soft brush and warm water to gently loosen any dirt—the sparkle will speak for itself. I also recommend avoiding exposing your diamonds to extreme temperatures and activities, so as to help better protect your jewellery."

BRASS

"Brass can tarnish easily," warns Caplan. "That said, tarnished items can also be cleaned quite effectively by using a jewellery silver-dip solution. We've found it to be extremely effective in cleaning tarnished items on most of our costume jewellery, so do so at your own risk. If you leave it in the solution too long, it can have adverse effects."

COLOURED GEMSTONES

"Stones may loosen naturally over time, so it's best to have the settings checked every now and again," suggests Links of London's representative. "Many gemstones can be cleaned in the same manner as diamonds. Others, however, require different care. For example, opals should only be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth."

CRYSTALS

"Sometimes can sometimes succumb to green verdigris," explains Caplan. "This can be extremely tricky to remove in items like crystal pieces, which have lots of small settings. As surprising as it sounds, ketchup is brilliant at removing verdigris and manages to get into hard-to-reach places. Gently brush with an used toothbrush, and then finish by delicately rinsing in room-temperature water. Extra care should be taken if crystals are present, as the crystals can loosen or fall out."

GOLD

"To keep your gold jewellery looking as good as gold can, I suggest regular cleaning with a dedicated gold-polishing cloth," says Links of London's rep. "Infused with cleaners and anti-tarnishing agents, avoid washing it to ensure it's as effective as possible. You can buy them Links of London stores and online."

PEARLS

"Whatever you do, don't use any solutions on pearls," stresses Caplan. "They're incredibly absorbent, and it doesn't take much to damage them beyond repair." Instead, after every wear, wipe your pearls with a soft cloth. "This will help prevent buildup of oils or other substances that may have come in contact with your jewellery throughout the day."

SILVER

"It definitely pays to invest in premium silver pieces. At Links of London, our sterling-silver jewellery is coated with an anti-tarnish solution, but it may still tarnish naturally over time. To recapture its original brilliance, clean with a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth."

WATCHES

Watches are one of the pieces many of us wear daily, but how often do you clean yours? With unavoidable sweat buildup, we advise taking a couple of minutes every evening to clean it properly. “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” I spent a lot of time pondering that frequently asked question during my senior year of high school, and it lingers to this day, inspiring questions that only seem to beget more questions. Got the promotion I was working toward? Great, but what’s next? Happily married? Cool! But where do I see us in 10 years? Thinking about the future is clearly something I find a smidge anxiety-inducing, so when I meet people who are relentlessly driven by their vision of the future—people who make great strides on a daily basis toward achieving that vision—I tend to feel rather inspired (ok, and maybe a bit envious).

I might be thinking of two people in particular, actually… Pakistani artist Hiba Schahbaz and gender-fluid model/activist Elliott Sailors. I recently had the chance to sit down with the pair and talk with them about their visions for the future—specifically, the world of art with Schahbaz and important LGBTQ+ issues with Sailors. Not in a crystal-ball “What’s going to happen?” kind of way, mind you; more like “What are we making happen?” Decked out in Gucci (which only felt natural, given that Creative Director Alessandro Michele always seems to be light-years ahead of us in every respect), they had a lot to say…

For Karachi-born, Brooklyn-based artist Hiba Schahbaz, the future means many things, and she’s especially excited about the expanded opportunities for self-expression. “I love the possibility,” the wide-eyed artist tells me.

Schahbaz comes from a traditional Pakistani background, one where paintings of the nude female form were deemed unacceptable. “When I was growing up, I got the feeling that women's bodies were sinful and somehow not appropriate—that we need to be seen less, speak less, feel less, be less,” she explained. “I spent so much of my life trying to conceal my vulnerability and emotions because I felt there was no place for them.”

Which makes the subject of Schahbaz’s paintings—nude female forms that often look like her—feel especially moving. “Now I find that being a woman is such a pure and natural experience,” she continues. “I want to express that through my paintings. In a way, expressing my femininity through my paintings has helped me express it in my daily life. I suppose life imitates art and vice versa.”

ON THE FUTURE OF HER ART:

I asked Schahbaz how she would answer if someone asked her 10 years ago where she saw herself. “I thought I would live in a mansion surrounded by rolling hills, with 27 children, a baby elephant, and lots of horses and dogs,” she answers. “And everyone would be running around happily, loving each other.” It’s the opposite of where her life actually ended up: in a Brooklyn studio painting all day, every day.

“I took a chance on myself, moved to Brooklyn, and began my life as a full-time artist,” she explains. When she talks about her art and her daily profession, it’s clear that she’s found her true calling—and that she would have had regrets if she hadn’t made the leap. “As an artist, I live in a world of imagination and communication. I create paintings which are an expression of my inner life. Every decision—colour choice, subject, scale—is a form of self-expression. I’m also lucky to be working in a space with natural light and flowing energy, which suits my temperament.”

As for her future? Schahbaz tells me that she’s not really a planner, preferring to make decisions with her gut as she goes. “It feels important for me to keep moving forward and challenging myself,” she adds.

ON HER STYLE:  

When we got around to talking about personal style, it was clear that Schahbaz feels that every piece she wears needs to express who she is. “As a woman, my clothes, hair, and scent all facilitate my natural self-expression. I need to feel comfortable in my clothes. I prefer soft, natural fabrics that allow my body to breathe and move freely,” she told me as she slipped into her mules. Sure enough, every detail, down to her timepiece, reflected her vibe: expressive, delightful, and just a little unexpected. “I’m partial to dresses and wear them every day,” she noted. “I also enjoy wearing white and off-white tones. Sometimes I feel that a clean aesthetic de-clutters my mind.”

You might recognise Elliott Sailors from their modelling days: Their striking features are hard to miss. Sailors made a splash in 2012 when they announced to the world that they identify as gender-fluid. “The most significant action I have taken was getting my hair cut,” Sailors told me. “I chose to to do this in order to model menswear as well as women’s, and that led to incredible opportunities. There were times people questioned my intentions, and it had me constantly and consistently question myself as well, always considering how best I can make a meaningful impact.”

ON THE FUTURE OF THEIR ACTIVISM:

Soon, Sailors had launched their #BeTrueBeYou movement: “[It’s all about] bringing together individuals and brands to help make a difference in the world, while to coaching these people and companies in practicing mindfulness, empowering each of us and then others.” An important part of this involved their work on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community.

With #BeTrueBeYou, Sailors is not only shaping their own future as an activist but also helping shape the future of their community. “As the oldest of six children, my father always spoke to me about leading by example,” they tell me. “From my earliest memories, [I was always conscious of the fact] that I’m shaping the future, and mindful of what example I’m being and how I’m shaping the future.”

ON THEIR STYLE:

“Who I am is constantly shifting, evolving, changing, and growing, so how I feel most comfortable one day looks completely different than how I feel most myself another day,” Sailors tells me when we start chatting about style and fashion. With these Gucci looks, we see the true range the model and activist can pull off.

“So often, people think gender-fluid is just dressing the opposite of the gender you were assigned at birth,” they add. “But what I love about fluidity is moving seamlessly between what’s seen as traditionally masculine or feminine. Alessandro Michele does that perfectly.”
