If there’s one night of the year where music and fashion overlap in the most exciting ways, it’s the Grammys. Unlike other awards shows, this red carpet isn’t about playing it safe; it’s about experimentation, glamour, and showstopping appearances. Last year, standout outfits included Charli XCX in John Paul Gaultier, Gracie Abrams in Chanel, Doechii in Thom Browne, and Taylor Swift in Vivienne Westwood, so expectations are high for this year’s arrivals.

After years out of the spotlight, the once-ubiquitous shoe is creeping back into the conversation. Pay attention: the clues are subtle, scattered, but impossible to ignore once you start looking. Let’s examine the evidence.

What Are the Valentino Rockstuds?

First introduced as part of Valentino’s autumn/winter 2010 runway collection by then-co-creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the Rockstud heels and flats are defined by slender straps and neat rows of square metal studs that trace across the shoes, whilst the corresponding bags feature studing along the border. Capturing the 2010’s indie sleaze mood while also nodding to the growing boho influence that was beginning to take hold, their launch was followed by instant commercial success.

Almost immediately, Valentino's Rockstuds filtered into the wardrobes of the street style crowd, editors and celebrities, becoming one of the most recognisable accessories of the early 2010s. Their appeal was easy to understand: the stud detailing lent a subtle toughness that offset their femininity. Few shoes managed to feel quite so of-the-moment—or quite so omnipresent. Worn by a variety of celebrities, from Alexa Chung to Jennifer Lopez, they quickly became the go-to 'going out' heel of choice.

Why Are Valentino Rockstuds Making a Comeback?

Of course, when a trend reaches peak saturation, backlash is inevitable. By the late 2010s and early 2020s, Rockstuds had slipped from favour, weighed down by overexposure and changing tastes. As minimalism, quiet luxury and logo aversion took centre stage, the high-impact studded heel all but disappeared from the style set’s rotation. But fashion has a long memory, and an even longer appetite for nostalgia (hello again, 2016). As we’ve seen time and again, the trends that fall hardest often return with the most force. Which brings us to 2025.

All was ticking along quietly until The Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer dropped. Striding through the halls of Runway Magazine was the iconic shoes and those shoes alone—immediately reigniting the conversation. While there’s no denying these shoes spent years out of favour, the signs of their return are hard to ignore. Fashion has spent the past few seasons enthusiastically resurrecting silhouettes once considered passé, and Rockstuds align well with what’s coming next. Between the toe-baring shape, stud detailing and T-bar straps, they already tick off several key trends forecast for 2026.

Anticipating their revival, Valentino introduced Rockstud designs into their Pre-Fall 2026 collection, leaning into fashion's penchant for a nostalgic shoe. Meanwhile, the death of Valentino Garavani earlier this month makes the synonymous shoe feel relevant all over again.

Suki Waterhouse and her baby bump just made their debut at the 2024 Emmys red carpet in a stunning backless Valentino couture gown. 

If 2023 was the year of the girl—complete with frills, bows, and an ode to innocence—2024 seems to be the year of the mum. The Emmys red carpet marks one of the first occasions Waterhouse has stepped out after announcing her pregnancy with fiancé Robert Pattinson.

Waterhouse, who announced her pregnancy on stage at a concert, is attending the award show in support of her Daisy Jones and the Six castmates who are up for awards tonight. You should know something about Kaia Gerber: She is delightfully funny. 

If her magnetic stare, in all its glorious intensity, had you thinking otherwise, I don’t blame you, because behind all that "blue steel”—which has graced countless fashion and beauty campaigns, runways, and red carpets—is a genuine sweetheart with one heck of a sense of humor. It’s your classic case of "you can’t judge a book by its cover.” Dripping with sarcasm, Gerber’s wit is unassuming and smart. It’s the kind that will catch you off guard in the best way. I know this because I experienced it firsthand during my hour-long interview with the model and actress (which took place in early July before the strike) and because it’s on full display in her new film Bottoms, the raunchy and hilarious teen romp directed by Emma Seligman. It appears Gerber, 22, has officially ushered in her comedic era. Lucky for us, she plans to stay a while.

"I’m excited for people to actually understand that I do, in fact, have a sense of humor,” Gerber tells me from her hotel room in Germany. Wearing a crisp white T-shirt (an item she admits is on heavy rotation in her wardrobe) with her brunette locks framing her face, she, sans makeup, is posted up casually in front of an abstract mural she thinks might be of Angelina Jolie but can’t say for sure. She’s been trying to figure it out for the last couple of months while the room has served as her home away from home. With the exception of a quick jaunt to Los Angeles back in June, Gerber has spent the majority of her spring and early summer abroad filming a yet-to-be-announced project. A few days before our interview, she took another break from production to open the Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2023-24 show in Chantilly, France. It’s but a snapshot of Gerber’s fast-paced life as a rising star in Hollywood and one of fashion’s most prominent faces.

Though it may seem that acting is a new chapter for Gerber, she’ll be the first to tell you otherwise. 

From as early as she can remember, Gerber was trying to make people laugh and perform for family and friends. If there were a play or musical happening in her hometown of Malibu, California, she was at the audition ready to go. Playing tree number two in the local production of The Wizard of Oz was a serious endeavor. She was an avid viewer of the classics and adored musical theater. It’s worth noting she is a Wicked superfan. "I actually think I’ve seen that show at least nine times,” she shares proudly. And yes, she is very excited for the upcoming movie adaptation. She loved watching Scorsese films with her dad when she got a bit older and harnessed a passion for international film by way of Jean-Luc Godard and new-wave French cinema. At 15, she landed her first professional acting job in the 2016 film Sister Cities. 

Then modelling happened.

A career in front of the lens seemed almost predestined for Gerber given her familial ties to the fashion industry. Her mother, the legendary Cindy Crawford, practically wrote the playbook on how to be a supermodel; her father, Rande Gerber, is a model turned businessman; and her older brother Presley has been the face for major brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Prabal Gurung, and Moschino. At 16, she made her runway debut for Raf Simons’s Calvin Klein collection, and from there, her career skyrocketed. There were the jam-packed fashion weeks, the glossy campaigns, the high-profile print covers—including her first American Vogue cover in 2021—the British Fashion Awards’ Model of the Year award, the design collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld, and a current partnership with Celine. "I got to travel and see the world and be independent and meet people from all over, and I thought, ‘This was so exciting,’” Gerber says. But even with all her success in modelling, her passion for performance never waivered. There was a creative pull, a proverbial knocking at the door she couldn’t ignore. She needed to give acting a real try.

"It’s scary when you have something that you have somewhat of a security in and that you have found success in to go, ‘I’m going to do something that has no guarantee,’” Gerber shares of shifting gears. "But I just thought, ‘Life is too short to not do something because it scares you,’ and oftentimes, the things that scare me are the things I should be doing.”

In 2021, Gerber made her television debut in the 10th season of the FX horror anthology American Horror Story as well as its spin-off, American Horror Stories. Last year, following a leading role in the short film The Palisades, she appeared in Damien Chazelle’s original epic Babylon.

Gerber compares finding the right role to the feeling of falling in love. "Sometimes, you can’t figure out why, but you just get butterflies, and something happens to you,” she says. Another surefire way Gerber knows she really is excited about something is if the material leaves her asking, "What is this?!” and "Who are these people?!” That was precisely her reaction to watching Emma Seligman’s first feature film, the indie flick Shiva Baby, starring Rachel Sennott. "I watched it and thought, ‘Whatever they do next, my answer would be yes,’” she says.

Enter Bottoms. Co-written by Seligman and Sennott, the comedy follows two queer high school students who start a fight club to meet girls and have sex before graduation. Sennott stars in the film opposite The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, another girl of the summer. A playful nod to the great teen comedies of the late ’90s and early aughts, Bottoms, which premiered at South by Southwest earlier this year, is the kind of weirdly funny, campy watch we’ve been missing in the last few years. 

"I read the script, and I was just like, ‘This is the gayest, horniest, funniest thing I’ve ever read,’” Gerber says. Knowing these scripts don’t come around very often and excited about the opportunity to work with a young female director, Gerber was determined to find her way into the movie. Before auditions were even being held, she put herself on tape. She ultimately landed the part of Brittany, the love interest of Sennott’s PJ. Not far off from Gerber herself, Brittany is usually perceived off looks alone, but if you peel back the layers, you’ll see there’s more there than meets the eye. "If I had watched this movie in high school, I would have had maybe an easier time, so I hope that there is some teenager out there who watches this and is like, ‘Oh my god—okay, there are other people like me,’” Gerber says.

Working on Bottoms was the equivalent of comedy boot camp for Gerber, with Sennott and Edebiri serving as her counsellors. She would study the pair’s every move, trying to match their comedic timing and figure out how their brains worked. The experience would end up being transformational for her—not just in building up her confidence in the comedy space but also in sparking a new passion for the genre.

It’s fitting, then, that Gerber’s next project is another comedy, the Apple TV+ miniseries Palm Royale (formerly titled Mrs. American Pie) about one woman’s attempt to gain a spot in Palm Beach high society. This time around, her counsellors, so to speak, were comedy heavyweights Kristen Wiig and Carol Burnett. The show also stars Laura Dern, Allison Janney, and Leslie Bibb. Not too shabby. "Some people go to Groundlings—I went to the Rachel, Ayo, Kristen, and Carol school of comedy,” Gerber says with a laugh. Gerber could have easily succumbed to imposter syndrome in such a room, but instead, she rose to the occasion and leaned into her vulnerabilities, saying "As an actor, you’re really only as good as the person you are acting with, and you can’t be self-conscious or thinking about yourself when you are with someone as amazing as Kristen or Carol or Laura. … It’s in the fear of failing that I think people don’t actually produce their best work. I’ve been lucky enough to be in environments where I feel safe enough to fall flat on my face.”

When Gerber’s not putting her comedy chops to the test alongside the greats, you’ll likely find her curled up somewhere with a good book. It’s not out of the norm for her to be rotating between three or four at a time—usually a memoir, a novel, a short story, or a poetry book. She is an enthusiastic consumer of literature, one who will happily ham it up with you about her latest book finds. Recent favorites include Acts of Service by Lillian Fishman, Lucky Dogs by Helen Schulman, and Terminal Boredom by Izumi Suzuki. 

"When people think of Kaia Gerber’s Instagram, [I don’t think] they expect to go on and basically see me only talking about books,” she says. Looking for a place to connect with others and start purposeful conversations, Gerber created her own online book club. Each month, she shares a new book with her 9.6 million followers, inviting either the author or a special guest to join her live. "I decided, Why not use this book club as a way to highlight authors and encourage people to read but also as a door or window into conversations that are really difficult to have?” she says. For this reason, she’s quite particular about the titles she chooses each month, basing it on the kind of dialogue she wants to spark. For August, Gerber hosted a live with author Alex Auder to discuss her memoir Don’t Call Me Home, a story that tackles being raised by a Warhol superstar and the intimate bonds of mother-daughter relationships. "I get to have these really incredible authors or people who just have so much insight into these topics. I am a very curious person in my life, and I think it lives in my book club as well,” she adds.

So where does modelling fit into all this? It’s obvious Gerber is leaning more into acting these days, but she is quick to clarify it’s not one or the other. The two can live harmoniously in her life. For the moment, she’s enjoying being more selective with the fashion projects she commits to. "I have fun doing it now because I get to come in and do really special, meaningful things with people that I have really deep, wonderful relationships with,” she says. The Valentino Haute Couture show is one example. Working with longtime friend Hedi Slimane as the face of Celine is another. "I love working with Celine because I really feel like it’s the coolest version of myself, and it’s not at all how cool I am in real life,” she says. Even her fashion choices on the red carpet, for which she collaborates with stylist Danielle Goldberg, are meticulously selected and have intent behind them. 

Gerber is nothing if not thoughtful in how she presents herself to the world and where she invests her time. It’s her Virgo energy showing. "I’m very organized and type A and focused,” she says. But that’s not to say she’s closed off to any new adventures the world has in store for her. At 22, Gerber is very much in a period of self-discovery. Having been thrust into the spotlight and adulthood at an early age, she’s essentially been living life in reverse. It’s only now that she’s getting in touch with her inner child and finding out what really excites her, how she feels fulfilled outside of work, and who she is as a friend, a daughter, a partner, and a mother to her rescue pup Milo. Even our cover shoot takes Gerber "back to school” with some of the season’s biggest looks. As our conversation starts winding down, Gerber gets a little introspective: "At 16, I was so much more confident in my knowledge about the world, and now, I’m like, ‘I don’t know anything about the world.’ … Growing up is realising how much more you have to learn.”

Right now, the possibilities seem endless for Gerber. First conquering modelling and now a whole new world in comedy film and television. What will she take on next? While we’ll have to wait and see, one thing is certain. Whether it’s that magnetic stare or her infectious charm on-screen, there’s no taking your eyes off of Kaia Gerber.

I spend a significant amount of time scouring the web for pieces worth sharing, and although I always try and bring a selection of the finest things the internet has to offer to the fore, be they from independent labels or French fashion houses, there's one place I can always rely on for inspiration: Net-A-Porter.

Ever since I saw her in Mr. and Mrs. Smith wearing that white, eyelet two-piece set, I've been completely and irrevocably obsessed with Angelina Jolie's style. Is the term "fashion week" even relevant anymore when the industry has basically taken up the entire 365-day calendar? Outside of the traditional spring/summer and autumn/winter shows, there are also cruise collections, menswear shows, and the crème de la crème: couture week. Naturally, the Valentino Haute Couture show was packed with A-list celebrities, but Anne Hathaway's outfit stood out to me because it was a much more daring look than we're used to seeing from her. 

For the Rome event, Hathaway wore a head-to-toe Valentino outfit with the most exaggerated of proportions: a teeny-tiny miniskirt and absolutely sky-high platform heels. Zendaya has become one of the most highly anticipated celebrities at red carpet events, and this year's Oscars were no different. She and stylist Law Roach have become one of fashion's favorite duos, providing us with stunning, bar-raising red carpet looks. Tonight, Zendaya decided to ditch the traditional long-gown style and wear a crop top and metallic skirt by Valentino. She can pull off virtually anything, but this look is especially gorgeous. The top is a cropped silk dress shirt with a classic collar and button-down detailing, and the hem is cut in a way that gives us a peek at Zendaya's midsection. Paired with it were a floor-length silver skirt and a silver bracelet wrapped around her arm. The metallic skirt added the perfect touch of Hollywood glam and elevated the whole ensemble. 

Zendaya could write the book on how to look chic, elevated, youthful, and glamorous all at the same time. The Dune actress has had an amazing year so far, on-screen and with her fashion moments. This crop-top-and-skirt look is definitely going to be on a best dressed list.

The It shoes that have been gracing the feet of fashion insiders over the last two years or so can be summarised as thus: flats and flatforms. Whether it's Prada's loafers, Bottega's chunky Chelseas or even the return of the Ugg, comfort and casual appeal have been the name of the game—which is unsurprising considering how much time we've spent on our sofas throughout 2020 and 2021. Coming in a high-shine patent material and a rainbow of hues, Valentino Garavani's Tan-Go platforms have well and truly captured the hearts of the fashion crowd, and within the space of a fortnight, we've spotted them on the likes of Emili Sindlev, Camille Charrière and Ellie Delphine. Though they're styled with everything from jeans and maxi dresses to micro shorts, I'm not sure you can exactly describe them as versatile, but they certainly seem to be catering to a wide range of outfits and personal tastes.

Virtual fashion weeks have meant that for the past year or so, we haven't experienced those everyone's-phone-goes-up moments when a truly spectacular look goes down the runway. It only happens a handful of times a season when there is a look so fresh and so brilliant that everyone unanimously falls for it at the exact same time. While in Zoom land, we can't hear audible gasps or see the entire front row video the same outfit, there was one look in the S/S 21 collections that went well and truly viral. The item in question was a bright-pink oversize button-down shirt at Valentino. 

The silk shirt is so oversize that it can be worn with little else, and on the runway, it was styled with a pair of barely visible short shorts. The shade of pink is so bright that it has a neon, highlighter quality and is exactly the kind of joyful piece that buyers were craving. Nearly £2000 for a button-down shirt is the definition of a luxury buy. While nothing will be quite as beautiful or special as the original, it's a price tag that will be out of reach for most. The term "resort" clothing is confusing for plenty of people—even those who know about fashion. For example, many know the difference between spring/summer and autumn/winter and when each collection becomes available to buy. You also know your Vetements from your Off-White. You worship at the altar of Alessandro Michele and Gosha Rubchinskiy. But you still find yourself scratching your head when it comes to resort collections. What are they for exactly? Who even shops them? And do you actually have to be in some sort of resort to wear the aforementioned pieces? We've answered these questions so you can confidently say you know what they are. 

Resort, also sometimes referred to as "cruise," is admittedly a little strange, not least because it's no longer about being in an actual resort. And it's not about getting on a cruise ship either (well, not unless you wanted to). Originally, the resort or cruise collection was created for those lucky souls who needed separate updated wardrobes for their holidays that would fall around the end of the year. It was a way for people to get ready for a fancy vacation (think those headed for Mustique or St. Barts) with fancy clothes when everything else in the stores would traditionally be catering to winter weather.

Traditionally showcased in May, these collections used to scream out "holiday clothes" in the most literal sense: all gladiator sandals and striped tops with a noticeable influence from nautical fashion. However, these days, resort clothing has moved on somewhat and now it's more of an extra drop of newness between winter and spring that does cater to the vacationing folk but also to anyone looking to pick up some clever transitional wares. Thanks to a broadening clientele all over the world, just summer clothes would mean at least half a hemisphere wouldn't be able to wear the pieces, so these days the collections even contain cosy outerwear.

What's more is that these more commercially focused ranges have resulted in buyers seeing a greater return on their investment—the pieces are also on the shop floors for longer, which naturally generates more sales over time. This means stores are ploughing a significantly larger chunk of their money into resort orders, and there it's no surprise to find that the resort catwalk shoes are becoming a far bigger deal.

Of course, it's not just that the designers have invested in creating new collections and committed to showing them on a catwalk, there's a whole strategy that revolves around creating a buzzy grand spectacle to amplify the message. From Chanel's Ancient Greek extravaganza in 2017 to Dior taking over Blenheim Palace in 2016, they're becoming as memorable (if not, more so) than the traditional shows during September and February. For a long time, I never spent more than about $150 on a pair of shoes. I forayed in everything from sub-$30 shoes (a dabbling I strongly recommend against after one very painful romp across Midtown Manhattan) to $400 booties on sale for a remarkable $133 (one of my favourite sale finds to date!)—but never did I drop more than $150 on a pair. I simply refused, based on principle, on account of my love for thriftiness, and on a belief that, truthfully, is a $400 shoe that much more high-quality than a $100 shoe?

The answer, I’ve now learned, is that yes, it is. I recently donated 400 of my hard-earned dollars to a for-profit charity organisation otherwise known as Bloomingdale’s, purchasing this pair of Stuart Weitzman pumps that I simply could not refuse. When I saw the perfectly pointed stiletto, the subtle gleam of iridescence, and the deeply-cut silhouette of the arch, I felt that I had waited my entire life to spend so much money on one pair of shoes—and this was the pair I was destined for.

As my clicker finger paused over the purchase button, I pondered what I was doing. As a 28-year-old woman, I had finally reached the point where I felt like I should own a pair of shoes that costs a somewhat significant portion of my rent—ones that at least had the potential to elevate my personal style from respectable to undeniable. My feet needed an upgrade. Plus, this was all in the name of science: I had to test my long-held belief that expensive shoes weren’t that much better than shoes of average price points. I clicked purchase.

And I’m here to share with you, ladies, an unfortunate truth: Expensive shoes really are better than cheap ones. Here’s a breakdown of what I’ve gathered, point by point:

1. They’re more comfortable.

While stilettos are rarely if ever comfortable, this pair is without a doubt the most comfortable I’ve ever owned. Because the construction quality is so high, and the quality of the leather is too, I feel like my foot is being constantly hugged by my shoe—a sensation that gives at least the illusion of comfort, even when true comfort isn’t entirely present.

2. They feel much more stable.

What’s truly amazing about a well-crafted stiletto is that it makes you feel like you’re not walking on a stabby rod of metal, when in fact you are. While most stilettos I’ve owned have mostly resulted in me wobbling around like a maniac, this more expensive pair somehow makes me feel like I can walk like a normal human being in them. Unlike with shoes that are more cheaply constructed, I don’t feel like I’m tempting fate with each and every step.

3. They magically withdraw compliments from others.

As much as I don’t want to believe it’s true, expensive shoes just look better. If you buy a good pair of expensive heels, they tend to look expensive, which just equates to looking sleek, well-made, and stylish. While I am a big proponent of brands like Zara and ASOS, who have more affordable shoes that oftentimes look just as pricey as the real deal—I’ve come to believe that there is no replacement for true quality.
