Indeed, checked prints are on the rise, be it the flannel shirts tied around the waists of sensual slip dresses or gingham blouses that cascade over a pair of denim shorts. Indeed, adopters of the check fashion trend aren’t wearing it in a way that’s pining for the blistering chill, cosy scarves and hot water bottles. Instead, they’re wearing it in a way that feels subversive and vibrant, especially during a time of year defined by picnic blankets strewn over verdant parkland and the checkerboard tablecloths of alfresco lunches.

There’s something quite ‘90s about the trend, courtesy of the fact that checked shirts were a staple in the wardrobes of fashion icons from the decade like Kurt Cobain, Claire Danes and Winona Ryder. However, rather than the more grunge inclinations of these members of the celebrity style set, wearing checks this summer feels far more minimal. This is down to the fact that the check print trend has become such a ubiquitous motif, cropping up in the collections of romantic and understated designers like The Row, Faithful and Posse.

You could even argue that the Olsen Twins are at the helm of this revival, with the duo opening its Spring 2025 collection with Italian supermodel, Mariacarla Boscono, wearing a checked button-down with tailored black trousers and chunky toe-ring sandals. Elsewhere, Dôen, the California-based brand beloved for its use of nostalgic prints and ethereal silhouettes, have helped push the checked summer agenda with its Faye dress, a ‘60s-inspired throw-on mini adored by fashion editors and trend setters.

Style Notes: Drop-waist dresses have officially dropped out of the conversation, with the most prevailing dress shape this season arguably the babydoll variety. From Olivia Rodrigo’s floral-adorned Generation78 style to Elsa Hosk’s Sandy Liang version, this silhouette is easy to style and breezy to wear. However, this season, the most covetable option does have to go to the Faithfull Costa dress, which is a style with puffed sleeves and a blue shade that’s inspired by Cadaqués in Spain, as seen here in Cincinnati-cum-Nashville based influencer Hannah Allen.

2. Balloon Shorts

Style Notes: Another check trend that’s bubbling up is balloon shorts. With inflated proportions and a slight bloomer shape, this cropped style is the latest iteration of the underwear-as-outerwear trend, with the hemline equivalent to the length of knickers. Still, when designed with a dreamy check print, they feel like the perfect thing to throw on and go, be it in city settings or coastal alcoves.

3. Grunge Shirting

Style Notes: It feels like every few years the check shirt has a revival. A mainstay in off-duty wardrobes in both 1996 and 2016, fast forward a decade and it appears this wardrobe staple is ready for a revival. Last winter, this style went viral thanks to a certain COS version. This summer, it’s gaining intrigue once again, appearing in the collections of Toteme, Matteau and Mango. Not only is this proof of the checked print’s constant appeal, but also evident that investing in the right style will have you reaching for it year-round, even if you are simply tying it around your waist or slinging it over your shoulders as an accessory layer.

Style Notes: Don’t let the name fool you. A skirt that falls just below the knee, which has always commonly been referred to as an awkward length, is one of the most covetable styles of the season. Languidly skimming the area between your ankle and your calf, this in-between shape is an essential look for both Hailey Bieber and Matthieu Blazy. Still, don’t think that wearing a checked skirt is equivalent to wearing a tartan kilt. Ditch the pleats and opt for a more streamlined and pencil style that evokes a Parisian sensibility.

5. Funnel-Neck Jackets

Style Notes: The long days, blue skies and scorching temperatures currently gracing us are set to end. But don’t fret. Enjoy them while they last, whilst still preparing for the season about to be upon us with a polished funnel-neck jacket. Most commonly seen in suede and leather styles, this shape has become one of the most sought-after styles for cooler moments. However, for days when the weather turns and all you want to do is stay at home to watch The Celebrity Traitors, you’ll already be set.

When you’re invited on a holiday co-hosted by Net-a-Porter and Aquazzura, the shoe brand that counts fashion royalty (Amal Clooney and Meghan Markle) as part of its fan club, you know the vistas are going to be worthy of a scene in The Five-Star Weekend (this summer’s Big Little Lies). What your imagination might not have dared to stretch to, however, is a level of detail that encompasses logoed coconuts (their skins quite literally etched with "Aquazzura Net-a-Porter"), as well as a pair of boats moored just off the beach, their sails blowing in the wind and emblazoned accordingly. I would say day-trippers won’t have seen anything quite like it in Port Pierre Canto, Cannes, but that overlooks the fact that branding is back in fashion.

Nowhere was this more evident than at Men’s Fashion Month. Singapore-based photographer Su Shan Leong was there to capture this wave of logomania, a trend whose origins can be traced to Dapper Dan (Harlem designer, Gucci collaborator and something of a logo mixologist). "One trend that was impossible to miss this season in Milan and Paris: athletic jerseys and bold logos," she tells Who What Wear UK. "With the World Cup season in full swing, people proudly wore their national team jerseys, whilst brands like Willy Chavarria also stood out, reflecting the growing influence of sports culture and statement logos on everyday street style."

There was no second-guessing who was about to show on 28 June, with one logo repeating as crowds gathered: Celine’s. Some were subtle (the first letter of the brand’s name scattered across a silk scarf, for example) and some the opposite (a clutch bag the colour and shape of a gold bar, "Celine" embossed onto its length in raised capitals). The house’s famously hard-to-buy belt—which features a disc of either metal or calfskin logoed with "Maison Celine à Paris; Hotel Colbert de Torcy; 16 rue Vivienne, Arr. 2", a reference to its historic Parisian HQ—already has the cult status of a handbag and has been spotted on Naomi Watts. Next to sell out will be its just-seen sneakers. "Even quiet luxury still embraces logomania; just look at Michael Rider’s new Celine Reebok collab," says eBay’s pre-loved style director Amy Bannerman. "The trainers will retail for around £800, and that is mainly down to the tiny Celine label sewn onto the tongue. If that isn’t logomania, I don’t know what is," she says, noting that logo tees have been flying on eBay.

A-listers have also embraced logos, an element of designer labels that you don’t usually see on the red carpet. For her inaugural look to promote The Odyssey, Lupita Nyong’o wore a dress by Chanel, an almost flapper-style frock, drop-waisted and monochrome, that was offset by an octagonal focal point that served as a frame for possibly the most famous logo in fashion history. It wasn’t ostentatious, but an understated pledge of allegiance. Dua Lipa, freshly honeymooned and back in New York, doubled up (or down) on a pair of logos, which graced her ballet flats and bag, by Chanel, using those interlocking letters to very successfully dress up a backwards cap and denim cut-offs.

These logos might appear like those before them. What might be different, however, is why people want to buy into them. As Leong mentioned, Willy Chavarria’s show felt like an invitation not just to wear but to flaunt his logo, with ticket-holders wearing branded football shirts (part of the designer’s collaboration with Adidas), tees and gym shorts. It’s how he has leveraged his name into slogan-type logos—"Willy Chavarria Fashion Service" and "Chavarria Community Center", for example—that’s interesting, using a logo to identify a community instead of it being a status symbol that confers IYKYK cache.

His Adidas collaboration, incorporating the colours of Mexico, has been posted far and wide on Instagram. "Wearing Willy Chavarria’s logo goes far beyond fashion or status," says digital creator Dhamar Lambaren, who’s based in Las Vegas. "As a Mexican-American creative, his work feels like a reflection of identity, culture and community. The logo represents a sense of pride and belonging. It’s a symbol of visibility for people who have historically not seen themselves represented in luxury fashion spaces."

In fact, Lambaren says that logos like Chavarria’s, which situate his garments within a proud culture, define inclusivity. "When I wear Willy Chavarria, especially through his collaboration with Adidas, it feels empowering," she says. "There’s an emotional connection to the storytelling behind the brand: the celebration of Chicano culture, working-class roots, family, resilience and authenticity. The logo acts almost like a shared language."

There are options if you don’t want a straight-up logo (Chavarria’s slogans being one of them). By Malene Birger has a house print that, ironically, looks rather like a tastefully repeating monogram. Its "Signature Flower" comes in the form of clutches, weekend bags, vanity cases and totes, as well as fluid co-ords that would easily fold into a suitcase. Acne Studios has released a seasonal logo tee, a raglan printed with a serif font that reads: "Ambition to Create Novel Expectations"—the brand’s acronym.

The simplest way of wearing logos is often the best. When Sophie Wilde arrived at Haute Couture Week, she styled a dramatically feathered skirt with a white tank top, its logo the only hint that it was Dior. If you can get a logo that quietly speaks instead of shouts, that is worth a bit of mania.

After two heatwaves (and one unexpected storm), it's fair to say that we're fully in the throes of summer. Our boots and jackets have been tucked to the back of the wardrobe in favour of flip flops and open shirts, but with practicality so important to getting summer style right, it can often mean that we end up relying on the same pieces time and time again.

However I have to be honest: this can start to feel just a tad bit boring and “same-y”, especially in summer when I wear my black linen trousers and white tank tops on repeat. Style notes: If you love an easy, throw-on dress as much as I do, then you’ll be very pleased to know that trapeze dresses are back in style. Comfortable, flattering, and effortlessly chic, this dress style can be dressed down with flat sandals and a raffia tote in the day, and kitten heels and a statement clutch for summer evenings out. First made popular in the 1960s, and then having a moment in the early 2020s, it’s clear that volume dressing is at the forefront for summer 2026.

Style notes: We all know that flip-flops are having a resurgence this year, and they're a far cry from the rubbery, poolside iterations we all remember from our childhoods. My favourite style? The ‘90s inspired wedge iterations that dominated the 90’s and early Y2K era. Style notes: If you were to ask me what trends I wasn’t expecting to come back this season, neon would be at the top of my list. However, I think after years of the creams, beiges and greys that dominated the quiet luxury era, I think we all deserve a bit of fun! Of course, I won’t be wearing all of my neon hues together like in the picture above; however, I definitely plan to invest in a few separates that can help add some playfulness to my outfits.

Style notes: I’ve never been a huge fan of bikinis, so a one-piece swimsuit has always been my choice for holidays. However, the tankinis that I wore as a child in the early 2000s are very much calling to me. They’re flattering, fun, and, most importantly, sit well within my comfort zone.

A few months ago, I wrote an article questioning whether New Yorkers were the "new" French girls. In the story, I claimed that the huge interest in '90s minimalism spawned from Love Story, the hit TV show that depicted the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her husband John F Kennedy Jnr, had inspired an aesthetic amongst fashion insiders in the city that wasn’t too dissimilar from that which we often associate with French women.

Whether or not you agree that one might be replacing the other, there’s no denying the growing movement in fashion that has adopted these same codes of Carolyn’s ‘90s minimalism and French-girl style. Every New York influencer, stylist and editor I follow on Instagram claims the same seeming irreverence to trends and commitment to a timeless, neutral capsule wardrobe of pillbox hats, frog-clasp closures and silk scarf belts that ensure the appearance of effortless elegance at all times. The show began at the start of 2026, right after the peak of quiet luxury, and gave classic dressers a renewed passion for their pared-back sense of style.

Countless publications, Substack writers and online commentators documented the meteoric chokehold "CBK style" had on womenswear earlier this year. Every high-street edit and marketing email came with a subject line around getting the look, and understandably so! Bessette-Kennedy’s uniform of knee-length skirts, white shirts, Levi 501s, minimalist tailoring and dresses from Prada and Calvin Klein (she worked for the brand) was supremely elegant. Sarah Pidgeon, who played her in the show, added fuel to the fire by adopting CBK's low-key, highly effective '90s style off-screen, even dying her hair the same specific shade of blonde.

But as the show ended just in time for spring, the new highly anticipated spring/summer 2026 designer collections dropped. These collections had an occasional whiff of quiet luxury and minimalism here and there, but on the whole they painted a different picture. Texture at Bottega Veneta! Ruffles and tulle at Dior! And sequins, florals, feathers and much, much more at Chanel! Finally, maximalism was back on the menu. And it’s not that minimalists are immediately hanging up their all-black looks, but there has been a notable shift, one that made way for more experimental, eclectic and colourful wardrobes; a wardrobe that one might associate with another very well-dressed, highly referenced New Yorker born with the same initials: Carrie Bradshaw.

Worn by Sarah Jessica Parker but devised by costume designer Patricia Field, Carrie’s style needs no introduction. A longtime champion of Manolo Blahnik shoes and the person who made the Fendi Baguette the first-ever It bag, with each episode of Sex and the City, fans knew to expect the unexpected from her outfits. From the Galliano for Dior newspaper dress and the "naked" DKNY slip she's wearing on the side of the bus to the tulle skirt in the opening credits, she was an advocate for some of today’s most divisive comeback trends, including capri pants (even those in camo print), crop tops, bandanas, boob tubes and exposed bras (always with the exposed bra!). Carrie did it all, whilst almost always in heels and always looking—as she’d say—fabulous.

Today, we might be in the midst of summer 2026, but look around on the streets or in your office, and you could hardly tell. I’d estimate 90% of women dress similarly to one of these two iconic New York women of the '90s. The Carrie Bradshaws (CB) of today are those diving into mermaidcore colour palettes, likely having a "Pucci summer" and no doubt invested in one of the latest re-edition designer handbags like the Saint Laurent Mombasa, the Gucci Indy, the Fendi Baguette or the Chloé Paddington. The Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (CBK) gang, however, wear new styles from contemporary luxury brands like Toteme, Khaite and The Row. They’ll be in tailored skirt suits, tank tops with jeans and a thong wedge sandal, and maybe a pair of Celine sunglasses with a black headband for good measure.

Sure, there are some overlaps in their style; some of Carrie’s most-loved outfits were surprisingly low-key (the white bias-cut silk dress when she sees Big outside his engagement party at The Plaza), but those are few and far between. It’s deeper than just minimalist vs. maximalist, timeless vs. trending. Carolyn had a uniform, but if one tried to give the same to Carrie, she’d have it tailored into a miniskirt and put a Tory Burch brooch on it. Where Carrie was appealing because she tried (who else wears heels with athletic shorts for a dog walk?), Carolyn was appealing because she didn’t. Effortlessness was essential to her aloof sense of cool.

And before you tell me that New York style can’t be categorised just by these two women, that I’m forgetting many other well-dressed NYC celebrity inhabitants like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Chloë Sevigny and Zoë Kravitz, to name a few, I know, but they weren’t born with the same initials, so they don’t count here.

As a fashion editor, there’s a level of expectation that you’re the default stylist, sartorial advisor and general sounding board for your nearest and dearest. My mum, whom I obviously adore to bits, is someone who takes full advantage of my insights and expertise. It also comes in so many variations, from beige-leaning hues to deeper olive shades, which makes it easy to find a tone that works best with your summer capsule. Style Notes: Speaking of colours that work with khaki, periwinkle sits firmly on that list.(And it works with hot pink too). This specific hue of blue, although light, is a touch cooler in colour temperature than other trending shades, such as teal. It's breezy and it certainly won't fade in popularity come next summer. Blue shades rarely do. Whether you wear it as a crisp button-down, as a dress or through footwear, you won't have any issues making it work with the rest of your clothes.

Style Notes: Chartreuse is summer's answer to spring's colour trends, such as aquamarine. It's louder, brighter and exactly the kind of hue you want to wear when it's scorching.
