As a professional doomscroller, it didn’t take long for the rumours of a certain cult brand’s high-street return to bubble up on my Instagram feed a few weeks ago. In a post that now boasts over 4 million views, Topshop teased a comeback that pulled directly on the nostalgia-ruled heartstrings of Millennials and Zillennials who grew up with the brand, promising Topshop will soon ‘return’ to the brand we once knew.

Maybe it’s the well-coveted Brit pop revival, or our Y2K-leaning shopping habits, but something in the waters (and the overwhelmingly enthusiastic comments section) tells me Topshop loyalists are ready to commit to whatever the brand has in store next. But just like the eager users in the comments section, I want to know what 'next' looks like. And, can it live up to the Topshop of old? The brand that managed to create a culture with their clothes and effortlessly encapsulate the youth of their customers.

Topshop, like a lot of '90s babies, had my heart as a teenager. It became the backdrop for whatever I defined as 'style' back then. I spent hours in their changing rooms and would save up money to purchase items from their premium Unique range—a term I still search on Vinted now. That era represented a brand you could rely on, effortlessly striking the balance between trends and personal style.

These are the reasons Topshop love runs deep, despite its murky downfall (which, if you’re interested, I’d recommend watching Trouble at Topshop on iPlayer). Whether you find yourself reminiscing on days spent in their iconic Oxford Street store, their sought-after celebrity and designer collabs (Kate Moss, Christopher Kane and JW Anderson, to name just a few) or simply can’t shake off the impact your Joni jeans had on you growing up, being a 'Topshop girl' in a previous life feels like the glue sticking together a keen audience of shoppers in 2025. And, clothes aside, it sets the bar high for what the brand can represent in its new 'era'.

A fact the new team at Topshop are well aware of. Last year, Danish fashion group Heartland acquired 75% of Topshop and Topman, marking a new chapter for both brands and move away from ASOS, operating as a standalone site from August (while continuing to be available on the retailer site). This investment has brought with it a slew of employees, fresh creative direction and new collections, launching with the new range entitled Ranch Water.

With a London-based scavenger hunt kicking off their relaunch this summer, a "We Missed You Too" interactive art installation by London-based artist Russ Jones's taking over Soho and a solo website on the cards for autumn. The brand’s new Director of Marketing, Moses Rashid confirmed that the old will inspire the new, telling us at the launch of the latest collection, “Hearing from fans of Topshop will be key to moving into the new era.”

So, with the scene potentially set for a 'Topshop Summer' I took the first opportunity I got to try out the new product in person (something we’ve all missed since the brand moved online). Armed with a criteria of all the things I once loved Topshop for and healing my inner child as I went... Welcome to The Great Try-On. With spring well and truly in the air, we seized the opportunity to try on some of the best new-in pieces from some of your favourite brands, documenting the process along the way. We believe that the best way to shop online is to see an item IRL and to read candid reviews, so we hope that this leads you to your most successful purchases of the year.

It’s been exciting to see how Topshop has evolved since being bought out by ASOS in 2021. One of the biggest changes has been the expansion of sizing. It has been six months since Topshop finally became available in plus sizes, and it’s clear that the brand is trying to fill a gap in the market. Its pieces feel more grown-up, cleaner and more premium than much of what is currently on offer over size 18, and it feels as though this new iteration of Topshop is going to be the place I go for good wardrobe basics and statement pieces.

As soon as the extended size range launched last September, I bought its bold orange faux-leather trench coat. I was won over by the super-soft and extremely realistic faux leather, and it’s been my main winter coat ever since. After this impressive start, I’ve been looking forward to seeing what styles it would have in store for us this spring. Excitingly, Who What Wear have called upon me to try out a wide selection of new Topshop pieces as part of this season’s Great Try-On. Read on for my Topshop test-drive as a size 24.

1. STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS + BIKER JACKET

My Review: Since Topshop always was the place for high-street denim, I thought it was a must that I tried out a pair of the brand’s Curve jeans. The Kort is a straight-fit, super-high-rise, 100% cotton jeans style without any stretch. At first, they felt tight to fasten, but I know they will give over time as they are worn in. I might be tempted to try on a size up still to see if they fit around my stomach area better, as I imagine these wouldn’t be very comfortable to sit in. I do, however, love how high these come up on my waist, and I love the fit of the legs. 

It feels like Topshop is currently trying to elevate the basics, and here’s another piece that many would consider an essential in any wardrobe: the biker jacket. The faux leather feels soft and incredibly realistic, while the hardware feels suitably chunky and sturdy. There are four functioning pockets, including this little popper one on the front which I found to be the perfect spot for your bank card if you’re running out without a bag. I really would recommend this jacket, as it’s a great piece you could just chuck on and go.

2. FLORAL MAXI DRESS

My Review: When I picked out this maxi dress to try, I had wedding guests in mind. I thought the blurry floral could be an edgier update to the classic floral prints we often see in spring styles. When I took this piece out of the packaging, the first thing that struck me was the lovely quality of the fabric. This dress is 100% viscose, which gives the garment a gorgeous drape and nice weighty quality. The dress feels lovely to wear, and I love the design. However, there are aspects of the fit that I feel need tweaking. I would prefer the neckline to be slightly higher, and I felt the seam under the bust could have been a little lower to accommodate my fuller bust. I love the slit in the skirt, which I feel was cut to just the right height to feel sexy without the worry that you might show more than you want to.

3. TRENCH COAT + BLACK SATIN MAXI DRESS

My Review: Although I rarely wear black, I can feel it creeping back into my wardrobe this year. Alongside a few of my colour-loving friends, I am leaning back into the dark side. I really think this might be the first black dress to reenter my wardrobe in years! As soon as I saw this dress, it stood out to me as an exciting piece to see in plus-size. I like its nod to sportswear and its clean aesthetic. I think someone with minimalist style would adore this, but it would work equally well for someone who likes to layer more. I would pair this with a colourful or printed high-neck top underneath and leave the zip undone. 

The trench is another great version of a classic. It’s not usually something I would wear, but again, it is something I’m thinking I need in my wardrobe after trying it on! I love the fit of this coat, which leaves plenty of room to wear a jumper underneath. The longline length gives it a more premium look, and I love that it feels full of fabric. The brand hasn't scrimped on the size of the collar or the volume in the back storm flap either.

4. PINK SHIRT + FLARED BLUE TROUSERS

My Review: A crisp cotton shirt will always be welcome in my wardrobe, and as I’m a lover of pink, this felt like a perfect combo. The extra-large cuffs and double-breast pockets add a twist to a classic oversized shirt, and this is a good style to try if you struggle with shirts being tight around your hips/stomach area. The open back would give you the ease to move around and sit down comfortably without needing to undo the bottom few buttons like I often need to. This shirt is also available in a white cotton.

Next, flares! I absolutely love flared trousers, but it can be difficult to find a flare that is exaggerated enough to suit my plus-size frame. The extreme flare of these trousers absolutely ticks that box. I love the quality of the fabric, and the colour truly is incredible in person. They fasten at the side, which can be a little awkward to use, but it does give the front a smooth clean look. At 5’11”, I love the length of these on me, but this would likely mean that you would need to take these up if you’re shorter than 5’8”. This shape is also available in black, which I think would be a brilliant basic to have in your wardrobe if you prefer neutrals.

5. BIAS-CUT MAXI SKIRT + LACE LONG-SLEEVED TOP

My Review: There has been a resurgence of maxi skirts in all formats, and the bias cut is one of the key styles of the moment. Topshop Curve has this particular skirt available in six plain colours and one print. It’s such an easy style to wear due to the elasticated waist and the natural stretch that bias-cut fabric gives to a garment. I would pair this with an oversized jumper and T-shirt for a grungier daytime feel or a lace top like the above if I wanted to take it to an evening look. This fabric is thicker than many bias skirts I have tried in the past, which means it hangs really well and has a more luxe feel. Topshop design team, if you’re reading this, I would love to see this shape in a classic leopard print next! 

This is a perfect top for layering. I love the neckline and the ruched details that add more interest to this sheer long-sleeved top. I would wear this on its own, over a cami top, underneath a slip dress or with a blazer—it really is such a good building block for an outfit.

6. STRIPED MINIDRESS

My Review: I love knitted dresses! They are comfortable, easy and perfect if you tend to float between sizes. I’m always drawn to a high neck, and I think that paired with the long, flared sleeves creates a silhouette that is just fabulous. I think this would look great layered over a pair of flared trousers or worn underneath a waistcoat. This dress has loads of stretch and feels lovely to wear, but I am slightly put off by the diagonal seam through the waist. I also really wish we (plus-size people) had been given the option of the lime-green striped midi knit dress, too, like in the Topshop core range. You know me—I like a bit of colour.

7. CHUNKY LOAFERS

My Review: I’m always on the hunt for wide-fit shoes, and I’m impressed with the Topshop offering. These chunky loafers feel nice and sturdy, and I love the patent croc texture. After a day of walking around London in them, I was surprised by how easy they were to wear for the first time—no plasters needed, hurrah! I get the feeling that I’ll wear these daily, as they basically go with everything in my wardrobe.

Les Francaises have a knack for making everything look as easy as un, deux, trois. From their no-makeup makeup to the breathy way they draw out their ouis, French women seem to have being effortless cornered. This is particularly true in winter, when looking cute can feel like a Herculean task. Even at subzero temperatures, French women move about unbothered, which felt novel to this Californian; the last thing I feel like doing when it's cold and grey out is putting together a look. 

But the French have it down to a science! This is partly due to how they shop. French women typically invest in a few good pieces per season, favouring timeless pieces over trends. A well-cut coat. Sticking to long-lasting durable fabrics that drape well. After my first winter in Paris, I picked up a few tips to make cold-weather dressing more fun—as well as a shearling coat and pair of camel riding boots that I still own today (after all, practice makes perfect.)

Ask anyone who has turned 30 in the past few years which brand had the most influence on their adolescent style, and they'll likely say Topshop. From my formative years spent stealing my mother's Topshop staples for Friday nights in my best friend's front room to landing my first-ever job with the brand the second I turned 16, Topshop was at the centre of my teenage universe. I'd try on the store's most recent deliveries during my lunch break, get a thrill out of introducing a customer to our best-selling jeans (long live the Jamie!) and eat up its going-out dresses like candy, particularly when I reached university age.

Although I have the memory of a goldfish, there's a part of my brain in which my Topshop purchases live rent-free. I remember buying a black jacket covered entirely by fringing from Kate Moss's first Topshop capsule and a red lace dress that I wore for my first date with my now-husband. In fact, my wedding shoes came from Topshop, too.

I started out my career in fashion when Topshop was still king. I worked for a high-street magazine, and Topshop was the brand that bridged all tastes, styles and aesthetics. The best pieces in every shoot would inevitably come from Topshop, and calling in samples for said shoots was a challenge to say the least, as every publication from Vogue to Dazed tried to get their hands on them for their latest editorials.

This, the nostalgia and the deep roots of the brand made it seem almost unreal when it was announced it was going into administration. Of course, this was a move every fashion editor had seen coming for a while, but the follow-through of seeing a Great British fashion institution close its doors was a sad day for the high street. But a ray of hope: Topshop had been acquired by ASOS, another shopping stalwart. Perhaps the magic of Topshop would be reimagined into a new digital concept. It's been a moment, but that time is now.

Topshop has officially relaunched, and after a few edits that didn't quite live up to its former glory, that Topshop magic has been recaptured and just in time for it to make a positive impact on our autumn wardrobes. It's clear to me that the design team has taken the task of rejuvenating the behemoth very seriously, resulting in an edit that will appease 30-somethings like me but also tempt Gen Z.

Amongst the trend-led pieces Topshop always did so well, there's a solid selection of more timeless items, too, with a honed focus on tailoring, accessories and outerwear. The shoe department looks strong, too, but will it be able to capture the mecca that was its Oxford Street shoe lounge? Time will tell. For now, though, it's a promising start. By now, you may know my standpoint when it comes to dresses. It's something of a love affair. I've been combing the web in search of the best affordable dresses, and to my delight, I've been inundated with beautiful, timeless styles that truly defy their price tags.

As we launch into July, our summer wardrobes have already been tested to the max. Sudden heatwaves saw us lean heavily into our lightest pieces, whilst soft showers coaxed a few light layers back into our daily rotations. Amongst the women in my family, we’ve always believed in the power of the change-room boogie. You know, the inadvertent reaction you have when trying on clothes at a store and finally finding a piece that fits *just* right, inevitably leading to a quick shimmy in front of the change-room mirror to whatever pop song is playing over the loudspeaker.

Okay, maybe it’s just us? But I’m sure everyone can relate to the exciting feeling of putting on an item of clothing that instantly fits like a glove. As a petite woman, I have to say it’s a rarity. There's usually a skirt hem dragging on the floor or a trouser leg that requires rolling up whenever I'm trying on clothes. That is why this month, I set out to find some petite-specific items that warrant a change-room boogie (or in my case, an at-home happy dance), and below, you’ll find 10 pieces that I think deserve your attention. These items have been created specifically with women 5’4” and under in mind. And in terms of perfect proportions, you can definitely tell the difference.

Style Notes: Reformation is easily one of my favourite places to shop as a petite woman. The brand has a wide range of options and creates the kind of contemporary, trend-led designs I actually want to wear. This skirt is a great example of that. The style is classic, but the pattern is modern, and obviously, the length sits exactly where you want it to. It’s the kind of item you’ll wear again and again and again.

Style Notes: This fit-and-flare dress was probably my favourite of the bunch. This is a size 4 and fits me absolutely perfectly. Call me Goldilocks because everything about this was just right.

Style Notes: I’ve never felt more in touch with Gen Z than when I put these trousers on. The retro pattern is very on-trend right now, and the length was perfect. I usually prefer a slightly higher rise on my jeans, but if you’re into a low waist, these are for you! If I were the kind of person who attended festivals, these are the trousers I’d buy for the occasion.

Style Notes: In my last petite try-on, I spoke about how I often avoid maxi dresses altogether, as they inevitably just end up dragging on the floor. Next’s petite range, however, may have just changed my tune, as the brand’s maxi dresses seem to have the perfect length. I love the pleating details on this dress, it felt like a classic that will stay in your wardrobe for years.

Style Notes: I was instantly drawn to the print of this skirt, as I love the look of gingham and its summer-to-autumn versatility. To be completely honest, this skirt was a little longer than I would have liked, as it felt more maxi than midi on me. At 5’1”, I am still on the shorter side of the petite spectrum, so if you’re taller, this might be the perfect fit.

Style Notes: As one of the retailers with the biggest petite collection, ASOS often gets it right when it comes to smaller sizes. At times, though, I struggle to find wardrobe basics available in the brand's extended sizes, which is why this skirt was a great find. It’s plain, simple and timeless and fits exactly as it should.

Next Bleached Cropped Straight Jeans

Style Notes: It's rare to find cropped jeans that are actually cropped on me, but these were the perfect above-ankle length. I really liked the fit of this pair from Next. The straight leg and precise crop felt very flattering.

Style Notes: Fun, flattering and a bright shade to boot! What’s not to love about this cute minidress? It’s a yes from me.

Alyda Gigi Dress

Style Notes: The first thing I noticed about this dress was how great the quality was. It’s made from a linen/cotton blend and is fully lined. You can just tell real craftsmanship has gone into creating this piece. The dress was slightly too wide for me around the hips (I definitely don’t have an hourglass figure), but the length was just perfect! It would be a great addition to any wardrobe, just throw a blazer over the top in the cooler months.

Alyda Lila Skirt

Style Notes: I loved the silky feel and perfectly fitted bias cut of this skirt, not to mention the length and the pistachio-green colour, which is ideal for trans-seasonal dressing. I tried a size 6, which felt a little roomy on me, but if a size 4 were available, I would be first in line for this skirt.

As a petite woman, I can pretty safely say that I've experienced all the pros and cons that come with my stature. Sure, I might not be able to see over the crowd at a concert, but I know I'm the one having the last laugh when there's always ample legroom on a long-haul flight or cross-country train journey.

While there are some issues I have just learned to accept (reaching the top shelf of the kitchen cupboards is a losing battle), there are other realities I refuse to give up on. One such example is finding well-fitting clothing. We're officially eyeballs-deep in the Black Friday sales, and every day this week sees another flurry of fashion brands announcing their seasonal discounts. As much as I enjoy partaking in the lesser-known sport of high-street fashion hunting, it gives me so much pleasure to hand over the baton to other industry experts who can add their own perspectives and tastes into the mix. I discovered Marisa Martin's through her work with the Topshop Personal Shopping Instagram page, and ever since I have followed her personal account and relished her clean-lined, timeless approach to fashion. So I figured, who better to pick out the best, expensive-looking pieces from Topshop's autumn/winter collection?

Naturally, she did not disappoint, and her edit comprises of dream velvet suits, high-shine patent coats, classic denim and versatile accessories. "I'm always on the lookout for a new coat when September hits, and love to make a statement. For me this season, it's all about the oversize leopard-print and updated matte trench or a PU trench for that high fashion look," Marisa explains. "I'm also a huge fan of statement leather pieces. It's easy to throw on Topshop's little black dress and toughen up the look with some '90s grunge knee-high boots. The chunky boot definitely isn’t going anywhere this autumn."

With the end of August in sight, the high street's autumn edits are dropping thick and fast. The weather might not have turned yet, but we're already planning ahead and deciding which cold weather staples we'll be unearthing from the depths of our wardrobes, which items we'll donate and, finally, if there's any holes that need to be filled for the season ahead. 

We have to say, this year's edit is looking better than ever, and brands have really gone to town on premium-looking, elevated basics that will slide seamlessly into your autumn/winter capsule. All of the below can be mixed-and-matched according to your needs: For example, H&M's ribbed knitted dress can be dressed-up with knee-high boots, or dressed-down with the matching trousers and loafers. Up Next: Autumn/Winter 2020 Trends: The New Fashion Looks You Need to Know

This week I went to Oxford Street for the first time in five months, and it's fair to say the shopping experience was rather different from the last time I visited. There's the mask-wearing and constant sanitising, of course, but I found that the most significant change is that at least 90% of all changing rooms are now closed. Clothes that have been touched now have to be quarantined for 48 hours, and so trying on a jumper or pair of boots is now followed by a logistical operation that is just near impossible for most high street stores. The one place I did manage to try on clothes, however, is at the personal styling suites at Topshop's flagship, where you can book an appointment in advance and have a room to yourself for an hour or so. 

I tried on a whole rail of the new autumn pieces, and after a long trying-on session, I was most impressed by five pieces, in particular. Like many at the moment, I am gravitating towards comfortable classic pieces, and so the items I loved are all 2020 spins on autumn basics. 1. Two-Tone Coat

This coat is so good I almost went home with it. The double layers makes this a unique, statement-making trench, however, the brown and beige combo is classic, meaning it'll go with pretty much anything and won't date quickly. 

2. Zebra Cardigan

I'd live in my dressing gown if I could, and so I instantly gravitated towards this floor-length cardigan that is so cosy you'll feel like you've left the house in your PJs. I'd wear this with a black roll-neck and a belt over the waist to make it feel a little dressier and at home with my slippers.

3. Chunky Boots

When it comes to boots this year the general rule is the chunkier the better. Topshop's take on stomping boots is the Albie style, which comes in ecru and black leather. 

4. Straight-Leg Jeans

These jeans tick off a lot of boxes for me, as I love the raw hems and straight legs. Although they are slightly more cropped than I'd usually go for, so bear that in mind if you don't like a gap between your jeans and ankle boots. 

5. Blouse

Oversize collars are everywhere at the moment, and this is a blouse I know I'd wear all the time—especially on those days when I want something a little more fun for my work Zoom calls.

With spring here and summer fast approaching, it seems that dress season is well and truly underway. And while, I absolutely love this time of year, and all the beautiful weather it brings with it, for me, the phrase "dress season" doesn't conjure up images of beachy linen mini dresses or flowing floral midis. No—it only makes me think of alterations and the dread of having to take each aforementioned dress to the tailor.

You see, standing at the very petite height of 5'1", historically, it has been very rare that I've been able to find a dress (or anything else for that matter) that actually fits me without the need to be taken up. It's a fate I very much accepted in my late teens, as I learned how to shorten my clothes with hemming tape and an iron.

Thankfully, though, in the years since then, several high-street retailers have heard my prayers and created petite-specific clothing lines, where absolutely no hemming is required.

I'm not sure whether it is because I work in the industry or not, but each time I make a new clothing purchase, I always, always think about price per wear. How many times will I utilise this item, I ask myself? Does it go with the rest of the clothes in my closet? It is versatile enough to be worn all year round?

Livia Firth, the founder and director of Eco-Age, began the #30Wear campaign, a concept that encourages people to consider whether they will wear an item at least 30 times before making a purchase. Hands up if you have more than one wedding this year? Assuming your hand is aloft, I feel your pain. I have four weddings dotted across my social calendar this year. Thankfully, I'm a bridesmaid for one of them, which means I don't have to worry about what I'm wearing to that one (we've already picked out our bridesmaid dresses from ASOS), but of the other three?
