Why? Well, I just love how much you can do with a jumpsuit. Wear it open with a tee or cami underneath. Why not roll the sleeves up for a more relaxed approach? Or perhaps even channel your local mechanic, undo the top half and tie it around your waist. The world is your oyster and the time it takes you to decide and get dressed *should* decrease now that you've got the top and bottom half covered.

Regardless of what year you came into this world, we can all learn a thing or two about style from our wiser fashion counterparts. These are the women who have lived to see generations worth of trends come and go and have spent the better half of a lifetime honing in on what they can now claim as a strong sense of personal style. Since this group of women offers a wealth of knowledge, I was curious to know what kind of style lessons they can teach the rest of us.

I spoke with a handful of the many chic older women I've taken to following on Instagram for style inspiration. Grece Ghanem is a 54-year-old from Montréal with a penchant for print-mixing and "old Céline." Lyn Slater, otherwise known as Accidental Icon, is a 65-year-old from New York whose career took off when she started blogging several years ago. Finally, Renata Jazdzyk is a 50-something living in Newcastle you've seen wearing all the buzzy street style looks. They each shared the fashion "mistakes" from their past, what they learned from them, and how they choose to dress instead now.

To be clear, I say the word mistakes lightly. We all make them, and I'm not here to shame anyone's sartorial choices but rather to celebrate and share the wisdom that only comes after taking the time to reflect on how you'd like to evolve your style. This kind of self-reflection doesn't necessarily require having decades of outfits to look back on (people of any age can vow to make better fashion habits at any point), but the years each of them has under their belt certainly gives more weight to the following advice.

"It happens rarely, but sometimes I will try something that deep down I know is not right for me, but I love the way the garment looks on the hanger, so I wear it anyway. I always end up looking uncomfortable. It impacts my mood and makes me feel anxious. So bottom line, if I do not feel 100% myself in it as much as I stare at it lovingly, I don't wear it. That includes telling creative directors I work with, 'That's not happening,' if they want me to wear something (like a black leather miniskirt) that is not me." — Slater

"Another mistake of mine was making sure that all my accessories were perfectly in the same colour, and I often wore too many of them at the same time. Scarf, belt, bag, shoes—they all had to match and be in the same colour, followed by my jewellery. Now I believe that less is better. Everything does not have to be perfectly matched at all times. Sometimes mixing colours and patterns can result in creating something unique and one-of-a-kind. Thanks to the various colours, our outfits become more interesting, more energetic and help us to look younger." — Renata Jazdzyk

Learn how to mask all the unattractive things we need to carry back and forth to work. (Those fabulous "bag spills" you see in magazines don't really exist.) Look for a fun, chic tote that adds to your look.

Learn how to pull it together quickly for the days when you're short on time. Think about the go-to items you know will always come to your rescue. Blazers are consistently my go-to; I toss them over almost anything for polish. 

Learn how to walk in heels! They might not be something you wear to work every day, but if a time comes when you need to dress up, it's a lot easier if you have already mastered the skill of walking in them.

Layering is a big thing in the world of the fashion elite—and it also happens to be one of the hardest skills to master, especially during the hot summer months. From one perspective, layering is a great way to stay cool, because you can remove layers as you see fit—but if you do it the wrong way, it's not a great look and you'll end up sweltering. 

To help us navigate the challenging world of summer layering, we recruited the help of a bona fide expert: our resident stylist Marissa Webb. Webb is very well-known in the fashion community for her top-notch layering skills, so she's the perfect person to tell us just how to do it.

"Layering isn’t as complicated as we often times think it is. There’s no real formula to it, or rules," Webb says. "You have to simply give it a try; but there are a few things to consider while styling with layers."

Usually it’s easiest if you think of the lightest layer first, but I also like to do the reverse. Try a cropped top or tank over your tunic or sweater.

Don’t put limitations on the items in your closet. A dress can easily convert to a top when styled with your favourite bottoms; a trench dress can easily morph into a lightweight jacket. Just like many things in life, our clothing has more to offer then we usually give it credit for.

One of my favourite and probably easiest tricks is to put items together of the same colour for a saturated, monochrome look. For example, try a navy T-shirt with a navy blazer and a navy trench.

Think in colour. Even pattern-mixing becomes second nature if you start looking at colour first; a black polka dot print pairs perfectly with black stripes, a red floral easily fits with a red geometric print. If you’re not a big fan of prints, try solid colours in varying shades.

Think proportion: if you’re wearing something skinny on the bottom, layer up easy on the top. If you're slouchy on the bottom, layer up with slim shapes on the top.

The age-old adage says that black dresses at weddings are in poor taste because they send a somber message that’s more appropriate for a funeral than a celebration of love. I personally would invest in a great handbag. It’s something that you use every day and, in a neutral colour, will last you for many years.

I also like to make sure I have a great pair of flats that I can wear on the days I know I’ll be on my feet all day, but still need to look dressed.

Another investment piece is a great-fitting blazer that easily takes you from day to night. There are just so many ways to wear it—I personally love it to dress up a pair of jeans.

Now that you know what to wear to your next holiday bash, a quick etiquette refresh couldn’t hurt. After all, nothing ruins a cute outfit more easily than bad manners. Keep reading for the eight rules you should definitely be following this holiday season!

1. RSVP—immediately.

It’s crucial to RSVP promptly, both as a sign of respect to your host and to help them plan for the correct number of guests. If you RSVP yes and your plans change, it’s courteous to let them know if you’ll be late or can no longer make it.

2. Be on time.

As a general rule of thumb, arrive at or shortly after (15 minutes or so) the time stated on the invitation. DO NOT ARRIVE EARLY. It will burden your host, who may still be getting ready after a long day of preparation.

3. Dress the part.

Follow the dress code. If you’re going to back-to-back parties in one night and can’t change in between, dress for the more formal event, since, as a general rule of thumb, it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. Check out our handy guide if you need more advice!

4. Come bearing the right gift.

It’s best not to show up empty-handed, but when choosing a gift, try not to bring something that creates more work for the host, like flowers that aren’t already in a vase. Some host-friendly ideas include a coffee table book, a bottle of wine, or a plated dessert.

5. Say hello.

This is especially important at a big party where everyone can get lost in the shuffle. Seek out the host to say hello and thank you for the invitation. This should happen shortly after arriving, to avoid awkwardly encountering them for the first time while you’re helping yourself at the buffet.

6. Offer to help. 

Unless there are waiters and servers around, always offer to help the host. Trust us: Even saving them just one trip to and from the kitchen will be appreciated.

7. Don’t bring a surprise guest.

If your invitation comes with a plus one, feel free to bring someone, but be sure to RSVP for that person. If you’re not offered a plus one but would like to bring someone, politely inquire if you feel the host might be open to the idea. Just don’t show up with an uninvited friend or significant other, which can be particularly frustrating if it’s a seated dinner.

8. Stay off your phone.

In general, your phone should be put away—and silenced—at parties. If you’re at a seated dinner, don’t even think about it. If you absolutely must make or receive a call, politely excuse yourself from the table for a moment.
