What were you doing in 2006? Perhaps watching The X Factor, going out-out in a bandage dress and listening to "Crazy" on repeat on your iPod Shuffle. But amongst all that sickly sweet noughties pop culture, something a little more refined was happening in fashion land: The Row.

In 2006, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were former child-star It girls who had the power to make a pen-stained Balenciaga Moto bag, a smoking habit and goth-eqsue black layers the height of chic (what can we say? In the 20 years since, these two little whispered words have become the ultimate in discreet, classic and minimalist fashion, bought by those with the budget and imitated by the rest of us. Who hasn’t attempted to get the look without dropping £640 on a tank top? I’m certainly guilty as charged.

Content curator Olivia Wayman is a fan. "Don’t tell my fiancé, but I counted last night, and [I have] approximately 80 [pieces]," she says. The influence goes beyond this impressive collection, though. "Not only do I take notes from the pieces, but also the styling," she adds. "There is so much to learn from simple tricks The Row utilises in its campaigns, such as a popped collar, a rolled sleeve or a purposeful size up."

Fashion curator Brittany Bathgate agrees. "[It has] transformed my wardrobe and how I get dressed. There’s much more ease now, and a quiet inner confidence in what I wear. I reach for fewer pieces, but the ones I do wear feel considered and fit perfectly," she explains. The clothes are one thing, but The Row’s discretion extends to its communications, and this is part of the lore. If most brands promote their designers and share imagery from their shows, The Row famously doesn't allow phones (often giving out notebooks and pens for the audience to make notes), and the designers rarely appear in public.

This, of course, makes any tidbit of insider information go viral, such as the perfectly juicy, individually wrapped blackberries given to guests before the autumn/winter 2026 show this March. "Most luxury fashion didn’t resonate with me because of the extravagance, logos and loudness of it all," says Bathgate. "[Its] refusal to participate in what can sometimes feel like the circus of the fashion world felt genuinely game-changing."

It’s also just, well, all kinds of chic. Like everyone, I made a mental note to go more minimal with my wardrobe whilst watching Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in Love Story. Still, the Olsens provide an equally camera-shy blueprint of how to do understated in 2026. In a world quite obsessed with selfies and 'fit pics, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are the antithesis, and it works. Case in point: seeing just one rare image of Mary-Kate this winter, wearing a long coat and Sambas, recently made me reconsider the classic trainer once again.

With The Row’s success comes imitation from other brands—not that the twins would lower themselves to point it out, of course. Instead, others have done it for them. Last year, respected fashion journalist Rachel Tashjian called out designers showing at New York Fashion Week as "copycats", with a "Rowification" taking place. And there are, of course, Row-like items on the high street that we all buy into. I love the sweaters at COS, for example, or the fisherman sandals at Massimo Dutti. "It would be an understatement to say other brands have taken inspiration from The Row," says Wayman. The Row styling is felt from high street to luxury, all [to capture] a Rowesque customer."

There are also the ex-The Row designers who bring that exquisite taste to the other brands they go on to join. Sofia Menasse, now design director at Gwyneth Paltrow’s GWYN, used to work at The Row, as did Veronica Leoni at Calvin Klein and Nina Christen, the new design director of shoes at Dior. "It is definitely cool to say you have a The Row alum," confirms Amy Odell, the woman behind fashion Substack Back Row. "It’s got cachet."

This wasn’t always the case, though. The Olsens were child stars of TV shows like Full House before they were It girls and then fashion founders, and—much like Spice-Girl-turned-fashion-designer Victoria Beckham— faced preconceptions from the industry when they first started the brand. "[The programmes are] really cheesy if you go back and look at them," says Odell. "It’s night and day compared to The Row. So they had to overcome that, and I think that they have."

And some 20 years after The Row began, it’s a long way from a "celebrity" brand. Instead, it’s reaching the status of what Odell says the Olsens wanted all along: to become the Hermès of America. Valued at $1bn in 2024, and with investment from the owners of Chanel, part of this is down to a relatively new addition to the offering—the Margaux, a bowling-bag shape priced coolly at over £4000, if you can even get your hands on it. "If you're going to have longevity in the luxury space, it’s pretty essential to have an It bag," says Odell. "People were comparing it to the Birkin." The brand has even followed the Margaux with the Terresse, an east-west style released in February, and now—you guessed it—it's sold out.

Beyond product, fans who love this less-is-more brand want, well, more. "I believe [the Olsens] will have absolutely expanded on the world of The Row," says Wayman. "Art galleries, dedicated homeware and antique stores. One can only hope."

On the heels of Matthieu Blazy’s masterful Métiers d'art 2026 show for Chanel, Demna has delivered his sophomore offering at Gucci and made a case for this signature silhouette to make its return: cigarette trousers.

Ever since Matthew Macfadyen’s cunning interloper character Tom Wambsgans introduced the conception of a “ludicrously capacous” bag in the final season of HBO’s Succession, fashion insiders have been embracing the merits of an oversized tote bag more than ever before.

Inherently cavernous and celebrity-approved—you only need look at Jacob Elordi’s hoards of oversized intrecciato-leather Bottega Veneta carry-alls for proof of the shape’s popularity—these supersized utilitarian accessories have become a symbol of the effortlessly elegant aesthetic that’s currently reigning supreme.

However, for 2026, a more specific mode is emerging in the way that a certain occupation is inspiring the trendiest bag silhouette. Now, it’s not secretarial top-handles or bourgeois lawyerly briefcases, but a doctor’s bag.

When I first heard murmurs about the rise of the doctor’s-bag trend, an image of a old-fashioned, clinical design containing medical devices like stethoscopes, thermometers and that incredibly silly reflex hammer for knee-hitting sprang to mind. After first spying this trend in cult pre-loved fashion platform The RealReal’s annual luxury resale report, I couldn’t really comprehend exactly the style that was being outlined as the next big thing. Was the data really telling us to carry something that Meredith Grey or Nurse Ratched would wear to work? Not quite.

What Is the Doctor's-Bag Trend?

Speaking to Noelle Sciacca, associate director of fashion and strategic partnerships at The RealReal, she explains that doctor’s bags are "a structured style with a true rectangle shape and usually include a zipper closure and shorter double strap handles." Certainly less sterile and far more sophisticated than I had pictured. Sciacca told me that the shape of the doctor’s bag is the common thread that ties some of the most popular rising styles together, with "average selling prices and searches up 25% and 24% this year, respectively."

In a world where wellness culture prevails—the industry is reported to hit USD $9 trillion by 2028—it’s fitting that a style with medical origins soars to an all-time high demand. If you look at the designers who are pioneering the trend, you’ll also notice that this is a notion they’ve mined for a while now.

"I credit the release of Miu Miu’s Beau bag with sparking the doctor’s-bag resurgence,” says Sciacca. “The brand has a knack for presenting accessories in ways that create viral demand for specific styles."

However, even long before the spring/summer 2023 collection that delivered us the bag, Miuccia Prada had been exploring the concept of uniform dressing through the codes of healthcare. For instance, Prada’s autumn/winter 2023 show, which was aptly titled Take Care, saw nurses' skirts flipped into something visually poetic thanks to the addition of embellished rosettes.

Though I’m not suggesting that the adopters of this trend are necessarily consciously subverting the GP dress code, I can’t help but draw parallels between the doctor’s bag becoming a thing and the post-pandemic world that we live in today. After all, aren’t we more hygiene-conscious than ever? Especially living in London, I think this is the perfect bag style for someone who methodically rubs anti-bac gel into their hands after commuting and drinks a daily gut-health shot to ensure their immunity is boosted to max capacity.

Take Kendall Jenner, for instance. For an appearance at The Row's Paris Fashion Week runway show back in 2023, the reality star and supermodel sported the brand's famed Margaux bag, a cropped trench coat and a tailored pencil skirt, which evoked the pure lines and clean palette associated with the trend.

Sciacca tells me that the Margaux style itself is also one of the most prominent examples of the doctor's bag trend. "Whilst the style isn’t particularly new, it reached peak popularity the last few years, even selling for 108% above its original retail price on The RealReal," she notes. "It sparked a renewed desire for top-handle bags in clean, streamlined silhouettes."

This softer shape also appeared in the Olsen Twins' recent spring 2025 collection, as seen on Italian model Mariacarla Boscono alongside a lace-trim silk skirt, pinstriped shirt, cashmere knit and mesh boots.

Elsewhere in London, content creator Marilyn Nwawulor-Kazemaks sported her doctor's bag with a more contemporary outfit, including an on-trend windbreaker, barrel-leg trousers, flannel shirt and retro suede trainers.

Of course, you can also throw caution to the wind and take a page from Sydney-based influencer and writer Ali Whittle's style playbook. These glittery mesh flats might be a violation for the operating room, and you certainly won't see them allowed in any surgery, but given the bag's more architectural shape, the juxtaposition between the silhouettes feels right to bring a sense of individuality to a more sombre bag.

If money were no object, I’d have a closet that rivals The Row’s Mayfair boutique, complete with a James Turrell light fixture, mid-century modern furniture and the latest designs Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have to offer. While that’s a dream that’s far from becoming a reality, I’ll happily resort to living vicariously through those who have the means to do so.

Indeed, there’s not much these chic dressers couldn’t convince me on when it comes to the luxuriate’s specific strain of opulent minimalism and irreverent signatures. But, I’ll be the first to admit that there was one silhouette that took a little more persuasion than others. No, it’s not the grosgrain ribbon and rubber Dune flip-flops, ‘80s-inspired turquoise Mara jelly sandals or the orange embossed medallion print towel designed to be layered over boxy blazers and pristine white T-shirts. (Unfortunately, they all remain on my wish list and would happily own them in a heartbeat.)

Instead, it's The Row’s Canal loafers that required further meditation. With a deconstructed shape, rounded toe and raised stitching that ridges the top of the calfskin shoe, I initially wrote them off as a slightly grandpa-ish style that wouldn’t be as flattering as the more popular Eel loafers. You see, this week alone I’ve come across so many fashion insiders sporting them, which has led me to a profound change in heart. The most influential moment, however, came earlier in the month when Kendall Jenner stepped out in a pair during Paris Fashion Week. The French capital is always such a well of fashion inspiration, and her look certainly cajoled me into lusting after the Canal loafers. Of course, to eagle-eyed celebrity street style adherents like me, you’ll know that this isn’t the only time she’s worn them, either. For that outing, she teamed her Canal loafers with a similar outfit consisting of a calf-grazing skirt and a cropped double-breasted shirt-jacket.

Recently one of our favourite L.A. fashion girls spent the last few days of New York Fashion week, attending events. Of course, with her came a handful of awe-worthy ensembles, each one better than the next.
