With the new year now in full swing, I'm keen to set some personal goals, kick-start fresh habits and actually set aside time to work on myself. Getting back into a new gym routine is high on my priority list, as not only do I want to keep my heart healthy and my body feeling toned, but I also love the feeling of endorphins I get from a good, sweaty workout. I typically mix things up with cardio, weights, floor work and yoga for full-body conditioning, but admittedly, I did fall off the wagon a little over the festive period. It's time to get back to business.

To get me into the mood for my fresh start, I wanted to try on some new gymwear—pieces that feel fresh, stylish and practical. My current rotation of workout gear feels a little tired, and so I was excited to check out the latest collection from H&M Move. I've heard great things about it from friends, collegues and fellow gym-goers, so giving it a real spin for the first time felt well overdue.

H&M is one of the biggest players on the high street and is constantly at the forefront of trends, as well as offering solid wardrobe staples and affordable items which are deceptively expensive-looking. The brand has been designing its workout-friendly Move line for several years, and this season, the collection is inspired chiefly by hot Pilates, infrared saunas and cold plunges (all of which I'm looking to introduce to my weekly exercise sessions in 2026). Aesthetically, this collection is all about '90s minimalism: clean lines, sculpting silhouettes, smoothing fabric and pared-back colours (hello, ink black, ivory white, soft sand and pomegranate), powered by a new fabric H&M is pioneering: SculptMove.

“This collection is about glowing from the inside out, facing the future with purpose and power and feeling excited. We wanted to channel all the energy, anticipation and transformation that comes with starting a new year into pieces that will make you feel and look like the best version of yourself," says Marie Fredros, head of design at H&M Move.

For context, I am 5'8" and typically take a size 12, medium or large, which suits my height, shape and curves. I tried on everything in a Medium, which felt spot-on and true to size thanks to the compressive nature of both the sports tops and leggings. The H&M Move collection is offered from XS to XXL, which, according to the size and fit guide, should benefit those looking for pieces from a UK 6 to a 22, catering to a wide range of body types and needs. I tried on pieces in colour-coordinated combos (which is how I like to style my activewear) and gave each a thorough review, providing pros and cons to help you decide if they'll work for you.

The Best H&M Move Pieces for 2026, Tried and Reviewed by a Fashion Editor

1. Sculptmove Sports Jacket + Vest Top + Leggings + Waterproof Jewellery

My Review: I'm not typically one for an all-white look (I'm a coffee drinker, after all), but this soft ivory-toned set felt like exactly what I need for 2026: a clean slate, fresh start and clear perspective for my workout goals. The base of the look is comprised of H&M Move's new signature Sculptmove pieces, including a vest top and leggings and finished with a bodycon Sports Jacket. The fabric feels buttery soft on the skin, and each piece promises to be moisture-wicking, quick-dry and breathable, which is necessary when getting a real sweat on.

I loved the hug-like fit of each of the items. Leggings that roll down and sports bras that don't compress my chest adequately are my biggest ick when it comes to activewear, and these pieces felt like they wouldn't fall into that category. The jacket has a slim-fit shape and short, stand-up collar, as well as full-length arms with thumb-holes for that extra bit of comfort and coverage on chilly days.

To complete the outfit (and for the others you'll see below), I opted for long white ankle socks (from a five-pack) and a pair of chunky white-and-silver trainers. As far as high-street trainers go, these felt premium and comfortable, but truthfully, I know I would normally opt for a tried-and-tested sports-specialist brand for a sneaker that can go the distance. These will get you to your morning classes just fine, however.

Cleverly, H&M is now offering waterproof jewellery made of 100% stainless steel, so you can still add a hint of shine to your 'fit without the worry of it tarnishing or turning your skin a funky shade of green. The simple huggie hoop earrings and snake-chain necklace are a highlight. All in all, I really liked the clean lines and fresh hue of this full look, and I feel like it would be perfect for Pilates and yoga sessions.

2. Loose Fit Sports Hoodie + Sculptmove Medium Support Sports Bra + High-Waisted Leggings

My Review: For those seeking a punchy, bright and head-turning gym ensemble, might I suggest this fuchsia-pink set? Admittedly, the hoodie itself is an ever-so-slightly different shade from the sports bra and leggings (the hoodie is a few shades lighter), so this is worth noting if you were seeking something truly monochromatic. Otherwise, you can opt for the Sculptmove tee or sports jacket in the same hue for a head-to-toe pink moment.

The hoodie feels warm, chunky and soft, the cropped fit is modern and flattering and I love the classic kangaroo pocket and loose feel; it's easy to whip over your head pre and post-workout.

In terms of the sports bra, it's a classic cropped fit and has medium support with a round neckline and removable cups, which can be taken out with ease depending on preference. The leggings have a high-waisted cut, which I liked for that extra touch of coverage on my abdomen. Hot pink was not on my 2026 bingo card, but for the greyest days of winter, this is a nice dose of dopamine dressing.

3. Water-Repellent Padded Sports Jacket + Sculptmove Sports Vest Top + High-Waisted Leggings + Weights

My Review: Next up, I gave this tonal taupe look a whirl. I do love a look that feels like an extension of my everyday capsule wardrobe, and so this neutral but modern colourway is something I naturally gravitated towards.

I tried on the Sculptmove Sports Vest Top and matching High-Waisted Leggings (having already loved them in the ivory colourway), and teamed them with the corresponding Water-Repellent Padded Sports Jacket, which was a true match in colour (a win!). There's even a two-pack of wrist weights in the same beige tone, so you can add a bit of resistance to your workout, stylishly.

The jacket was a favourite of mine, as the light padding and weather-repellent fabric would mean I have no excuse not to step outside and take that short walk to the gym, whatever Mother Nature throws at me. The square cut, funnel neck, cropped cut and discreet side pockets make it look ultra-modern, timeless and chic, and it will effortlessly pair with infinite leggings and cycling-short looks. This is the outfit I adored the most. It felt like the most "me", and the dark, biscuit-y shade will stand up to frequent wear, sweat and weekly wash cycles.

4. Sculptmove Sports Top + Cycling Shorts + Tote Bag

My Review: Last but not least, I tested this sleek, minimal and dare I say quite sexy two-piece in black. Comprised of the Sculptmove Sports Top with long sleeves and the Sculptmove Sports Cycling Shorts, this ensemble would be just the ticket for a dance class or gentle weights session.

The long-sleeve cut of the top features thumb holes (quite '90s, no?) and a chic square neckline. The hem is neither cropped nor long, but right in the middle, which means it teams perfectly with the cycle shorts, which have a regular cut, if you're comfortable showing a flash of midriff. Going back to the top, it does, in fact, have bust support, so you might not need a bra too (depending on how much bust support you require).

Black is, of course, a fail-safe shade for both curated day-to-day wardrobes and athleisure, as it pairs with everything and can withstand stains, sweat and the perils of constant daily wear. I'm saving this set for warmer days when I dare to get the pins out. I also checked out the frosted-white tote bag, which was easy to throw over my shoulder, apt for holding all of my sweaty items post-shower and even large enough for a towel and water bottle, too. Ideal!

I wanted to launch a bit of an investigation as to why the teddy coat remains so popular, so I tapped an elite group of leading industry experts for their insights and styling advice, and, as we do so well at Who What Wear UK, tried on an assortment of styles with a little help from some of my most stylish colleagues. Are Teddy Coats a Timeless Style?

"Well, yes," notes Ian Griffiths, creative director of Max Mara. "The teddy bear coat has been a best-seller for Max Mara since it was first introduced in 2013. So we're talking about 13 years later, and with no sign of the appetite for the teddy bear coat abating. So, I think you can truly describe it as a timeless item or an item whose appeal is timeless—what I would describe as an object of desire."

"Teddy coats return year after year because they’re genuinely timeless," adds celebrity stylist Emma Lane. "They’re cosy, practical and endlessly adaptable, which makes them the piece people reach for when the temperature drops. For 2025 and going into 2026, we’re seeing a renewed desire for comfort that still feels chic. Teddy coats deliver exactly that. The silhouette and texture feel luxurious yet relaxed, which means they never really date. What Is the Inspiration Behind the Teddy Coat?

"I mean, really, there's a clue in the name," says Griffiths. "I was noticing how people were attaching little toys to their bags and their keys, and so on, like little children's toys. This struck me as being synonymous with a desire to retreat to childhood in a big, scary world. I was looking for something that would give a tremendous sense of comfort. The Italian word 'coccole', meaning 'cuddle'; [I wanted to design] a coat that would cuddle you like a parent would a child. I wanted a coat that was like a big pet bear, your favourite animal, your favourite toy when you were a child."

Is the Teddy Coat Meant to Be Oversized?

"We first showed it in 2013. It was regarded as being almost shocking because it was so big, when everything else was so small. The Max Mara teddy bear coat was designed to be big and should be worn big," says Griffiths. "And one of the reasons why it became so successful was because it went against the grain of fashion at the time."

"If you try one on, it's so light and so warm. Its volume is so completely cuddly," adds Griffiths.

"The very latest is Taylor Swift. Everybody from Jennifer Lopez [and] Julia Roberts to Lady Gaga, Cardi B and Beyoncé. And just when you think it might be waning, another celebrity wears it, and it never loses its currency," affirms Griffiths.

"Recently, I spotted Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wearing a teddy coat, and she is the definition of chic," comments Lane. "Kendall Jenner has also been spotted in them consistently for almost a decade, which tells you everything you need to know!"

"I’ve spotted many celebrities in teddy coats, including Simone Ashley, Lily Collins and Hailey Bieber. Lily Collins has been spotted in our teddy aviator," shares Kostas.

What Colours Work Best When Choosing a Teddy Coat?

"A light brown is always a gorgeous choice, as it’s incredibly versatile," advises Lane. "It pairs beautifully with black, light denim, dark denim and even winter whites. If you want a teddy coat you’ll wear on repeat, that soft brown palette is definitely the most adaptable."

That one store is, of course, Zara. Tasked with checking out their latest offering of autumnal goodness, I sent myself on a retail safari to one of their biggest stores in central London.

I know all to well that shopping IRL can be busy, stressful, and overstimulating, so I took it upon myself to get out there and do this for you (I know, you can thank me later!). This is what The Great Try On is all about!

Right now, Zara is brimming with great suede pieces, coats and jackets, contemporary denim sets, lace-trimmed separates, skirts, suiting, and an abundance of fabulous accessories, from satin scarves, of-the-moment shoes, do-it-all all handbags and artful, statement jewellery. And these are the things Zara does best—directional and trend-led pieces which, if bought with a discerning eye and thoughtful investment, will fast become wardrobe staples that ultimately feel like they can take pride of place in your wardrobe for a long time. And helping you build a considerate and hardworking closet is our MO here at Who What Wear UK, so I gave the best pieces I could find a go, as well as providing some pros and cons for fairness.

The Best Zara Pieces for Autumn 2025, As Tried and Reviewed By a Fashion Editor

1. Funnel Neck Jacket + Satin Separates + Leather Loafers

My Review: If you know me, you know I am a sci-fi girlie through and through, so building a look that resembles and honours Trinity from The Matrix, one of my biggest on-screen icons, gives me great, unrivalled joy. With that in mind, I naturally gravitated towards this high-shine, funnel-neck black jacket, which looks perfectly capable of outrunning and outsmarting many an agent. Funnel-neck jackets are really taking off at the moment, and so I wanted to get in on a slice of the action myself. I gave this one a go in a medium size (spot on, with an oversized fit), which is from Zara's premium selection. I loved its ultra-light feel and the paper-crisp quality, allowing for ample layering underneath, and ruching where you want it (it is equipped with drawstrings, stoppers and elasticated cuffs.) My only hesitation with this jacket is that it is made from a real mix of man-made fabrics, including polyurethane and polyester. If I were to truly invest in a classic jacket like this, I would want to opt for a 100% leather version, for that real luxury finish.

To play up to the glossy black texture of the jacket, I paired it with Zara's bestselling lace-trimmed cami, which has been spotted on so many stylish people on the streets and on Instagram this summer, in pastel and off-white variations. This autumn, Zara are keeping the people happy, bringing it back in an all-black colourway. This top alone is spot on for date night dressing, and its asymmetrical shape allows for the lace to peek over or pop out from under any layering, whether that's sweaters, skirts or denim (all of which are very Olsen coded). I spotted the corresponding skirt, but this time, in a chocolate tone, which, when worn together, gives a rich, added dimension to the look. To finish, a black east-west bag in a rectangular shape (not laptop friendly, so perhaps keep shopping around if this is a non-negotiable for you), plus shiny leather loafers (they looked super expensive), gave the look real intention and practicality. Lastly, an oversized silver floral cuff for an artful flourish to my arm. Head to toe, this is something I would wear for the office, to then take me to after-work dinner and drinks with friends, as it feels slick, stylish and put-together.

2. Faux-Fur Trimmed Trench + Sweater + Sequin Skirt + Olive Accessories

My Review: I've been on the hunt for a brand-new trench coat, something that feels equally contemporary and timeless. I have been loving all of Zara's latest uploads and the styling I'm seeing online, which has been giving me a heady mix of boho and grunge vibes. This trench (which I first spotted on site) has both in abundance, due to its mushroom tone and faux-fur trim, so I was excited to find it and try it on in the flesh. The collar is removable, so you can keep things streamlined or cozy, your choice. Not only that, but the coat itself is reversible, so you can switch up the checked fabric to a deep green one-note tone. Both look quite heritage to the unassuming eye, and the straight-cut shape allows it to swing and drape over your outfit, without clinging, which I, for one, really appreciate. Again, this jacket is made of a mix of cotton and polyester, but I think the latter brings that protective, shower-proof quality to this trench, making it ideal for easy breezy autumn days in the city, not so much the countryside. I went for a medium size, but wouldn't mind a large for a bit of extra layering space.

To amp up the cozy factor, I gave this chunky oversized knit a spin, which came in a natural biscuit-beige hue. I loved its fit and feel, and I think that came down to the heavy cotton and viscose element, giving it that softness and comfort factor we all seek in our sweaters. I wanted to throw the look off a bit and give it a pretty, nighttime element. I couldn't help but try on this super-sparkly, all-over sequin mini skirt, which, truth be told, is not normally something I would ever consider or buy. Taking a bit of a gamble can sometimes really pay off, and this skirt actually felt so fun and powerful to wear, with the super short shape making it a neat option for the upcoming party season. I took the shirt in a size large, which was spot-on for my size 10/12 physique. Not to give too much leg away, I opted for a knee-length boot, which I noted in my What To Buy Now column recently. I adored the opulent olive-green hue, patent shine and kitten-heel, which felt very comfortable and walkable. To complete the fit, I reached for a suede handbag, which had a braided finish to the seams and top handle. This yet again tapped into the modern boho trend, which is not only seriously prevalent on the catwalks, but is something Zara does at a pocket-friendly price on the high street. All in all, this is a great weekend look, and would be great for chilly evenings at chic dinners or bar-hopping.

2. Suede Collarless Jacket + White Denim + Chocolate Accessories

My Review: I don't make the rules—no autumn wardrobe would be complete without a solid suede moment, be that in bag, jacket or shoe form. This suede coat was placed at the very front of the store when I walked in, and is part of Zara's brand-new premium edit, so it felt only right to try it on for size. I noticed the collarless neckline first and foremost, which feels reminiscent of the brands and looks I am seeing on many an Uptown New York style-setter. Knee-length and straight-cut in shape, this jacket is simple, but could be mistaken for designer, given its 'quiet luxury' feel. I took this in a large, which felt comfortable and with enough room for a light knit underneath, as the jacket itself is quite weighty. It has an ever-so-slightly off-the-shoulder shape, which gives it an easy-to-wear, unrestrictive silhouette. At £169, I actually think this is a steal, and no doubt will be a bestseller.

I wanted to let the chocolate brown shade take centre stage, so I accented the coat with a squishy, patent-brown shoulder bag, suede kitten-heeled boots and a brown leather belt. I wanted to keep the base of my look tacitly considered, so I chose a knitted t-shirt in what I can only describe as the perfect Jersey gold milk hue, and a crisp pair of winter-white denim jeans. The jeans felt super soft to the touch, and had a great stretch for ease of wear. I loved their wide leg shape and to-the-floor length, which made for a great excuse to add a slight heeled shoe. All in all, this look felt elegant and polished, and infinitely wealth-whispering. I am a real sucker for chocolate brown, so this jacket, as well as all the bells and whistles, ticked many a box for me. What I also rate is that these items didn't feel tied down to a trend, fad or fleeting mood—they are great additions to anyone's capsule wardrobe, and can no doubt be worn for endless autumnal seasons to come.

This is especially true if you're looking to make a few luxury purchases. Let me explain why: September is one of, if not the most pivotal moments of the fashion calendar. First of all, it's obviously the start of the autumn/winter season—a moment when the trends for the next six months, if not longer, really begin to emerge and cement. Within the industry, it's the time when we start to see which microtrends and cult pieces people actually want to invest in—the predictions from February that will manifest, and those that won't. It's also just culturally a time of 'new beginnings', there's a feeling of a fresh start that comes alongside that 'back to school' mood. As such, it's a significant time for publications to release their fashion issues, in which they forecast the season ahead.

There's also of course the weather, which seems almost cliché to point out, but it does have an impact. After months of wearing barely anything, we're always ready to get back into our wardrobes with full looks of layers, textures and a multitude of different occasions to dress for.

The Best Luxury Buys for Autumn 2025, As Tried and Reviewed By an Editor:

1. The Investment Piece: Toteme Suede Coat

My Review: We've spoken about suede jackets and coats mutliple times in the last few weeks on Who What Wear. Because, despite every autumn always bringing us a variety of sumptuous suede styles, this year the offering feels stronger and more compelling than ever. Toteme's suede coat is a true investment piece, but is the absolute definition of timelessness. Its soft creamy-beige hue will see you wear it in early spring, and it has a neat yet slightly boxy fit that feels a little reminiscent of Jennifer Anniston (read: Rachel Green) in the late '90s. It's made from 100% calf leather, has welt pockets, a rounded collar and an ever so slightly oversized fit—which is great for fitting a jumper underneath.

Pros: It's simply stunning, and won't fail to achieve compliments. I'm careful in my considerations for recommending products that are a higher price point, but this coat really does feel and look like its price tag.
Cons: The cream colour is definitely a little risky, please don't be drinking any black Americano coffees whilst wearing this! It's also, ultimately, a suede coat, so is not going to keep you warm in the coldest months. But for September and early October, as well as April and May, this will be a stand-out piece.

2. The Perfect Tailored Trousers: Róhe

My Review: What would the autumn season be without tailored trousers? And as a matter of fact, tailoring in general! I know when we talk about tailored pants, we often think of a working wardrobe, but I really think sartorial styling is incredibly sexy, and is just as good worn for dinner dates or drinks as it is in an office environment. So, it was important to me to find the very best of luxury's tailored trousers when curating this list. Róhe's grey trousers here are the best I tried on. Granted, they're long, but I'm happy to have my tailoring altered to achieve the best fit. The waistband is just over an inch, which is slightly more generous than your usual tailored pants, and I think makes a real difference to the silhouette and fit that outlines the body. It also means you can wear it with a thicker belt—I can't stand it when my belt loops don't fit my favourite belts! The pleated detail at the sides of the hips also helps flatter the form. At 98% wool, 2% elastane, they feel soft with some slight movement, without being too hot—perfect for these more transitional 'in-between' weather days.

Pros: The trousers also have a matching blazer and waistcoat, so if you love them as much as me you could also purchase the full set. Other advantages are the pleated detail on the sides, and a aforementioned generous depth on the waistband.
Cons: They're incredibly long—great for those who are 5ft10, but those with a shorter stature will need to have them altered.

3. The It Bag: Loewe Flamenco

My Review: It's hard to land on the ultimate It bag, because really it depends on your needs and style. After careful consideration though, as well as testing a few different options, I landed on the Loewe Flamenco. Why? Well, with Jonathan Anderson's departure from the brand, and the Flamenco being one of his signature designs, there's icon status automatically given here, and who knows how long it will be available under the house's new leadership. But in a more practical sense, when trying out and carrying the different styles from a range of brands, this is the bag that felt the most customisable. With different straps and handles that are already part of the design (the side two drawstring-style handles on either side, as well as the attachable crossbody strap), as well as the multitude of chain straps that can be purchased separately, the Flamenco just felt like it was the most personal to the buyer. The most bespoke. What's more is the size. I road tested all the options, I loved the larger one with a shoulder strap–perfect for a laptop, by the way—but the medium felt like the most versatile; both a clutch for the evening, but a casual day bag when worn crossbody or with the attached shoulder-length chain. Also, the Loewe Puzzle has reigned supreme for a long time, and I think this is the next to take its place.

Pros: Very customisable with different straps, depending on needs and style. Lovely soft supple leather that I think will only get better with age. Comes in every colour under the sun, and some!
Cons: Less practical internally, only the larger style has compartments.

4. The Hero Staple: Róhe Leather Jacket

My Review: This jacket has probably been the most talked about leather item in our office in the last few weeks, so when tasked with doing the luxury try-on, this was top of my list. My word, it didn't disappoint. First of all, a little anecdote for you. Before I'd got to the Róhe rail in Selfridges, I was looking at other leather jackets by other luxury brands, the sales assistant actually pointed me in the direction of this one, saying "if you're looking for a leather jacket, I have a stunning one that is a more attainable price," before guiding me to this guy. I know what you're thinking, £800 isn't exactly cheap, but for luxury leather? It's not so bad. I can't not mention these gorgeous toggle ties—really the detail that makes this jacket not just a leather jacket.

Pros: It's made with the softest, most supple leather. It also comes in other fabrics and colours, I love the cream wool one too, which has a higher neckline. The fit is also very accurate—not tight, not oversized.
Cons: The leather, like a lot of leather, quite easily scratches. But perhaps this sense of aging will add to the overall look.

5. The Ultimate Denim: Toteme Jeans

My Review: Everyone that has worn denim knows how it feels when a pair of jeans just fit. It's possibly the hardest category of clothing to shop for, which is why knowing those fail-safe brands is key. Toteme denim is a favourite for the Who What Wear team and its audience. These particular Toteme Low Straight-Leg Denim Jeans are a great everyday, classic style. The fit? Perfection. They come in true to size (with sizing coming as waist sizes, i.e. 26, 27, 28 etc), they hug at the hips so neatly, without feeling too tight and lie at the ideal place on the body. They're marked as 'low', but they're not actually low waist, just lower than your usual high-waist fit, which is ideal for those who fear the comeback of trousers slung below or on the hip bones.

Pros: The biggest pro is definitely the fit, as mentioned, as well as the general quality and feel. They're breathable, and have a slight stretch, without being made with so much elastic that they make you sweat. I also really like the wash colour, this mid-to-light wash feels fresh without being summery.
Cons: For my 5ft3 height, the length is just o-k. If you're a similar height as me, and happy to wear shoes with a slight heel, or even wear them a little baggy, then fine, but if you're more petite or fairly tall, the length probably won't work for you.

6. The Cult Sneaker: Loewe Ballet Runner 2.0

My Review: Loewe sneakers have been on my radar for a while. Long gone are the days of the chunky trainer or the 'dad sneaker'—we want this slimmer silhouette these days. This category is a competitive one, with Miu Miu also giving it a run for its money and Dries Van Noten's leather trimmed style garnering more and more popularity. The Loewe Ballet Runner 2.0 just clinches it though, with it's fresh take on its original silhouette, the Ballet Runner, it has a slightly curved toe that feels a little culty and cool.

Pros: Comfortable, comes in multiple colourways and has a slightly 'fresher' take on the classic slender trainer shape.
Cons: There are parts of this sneaker that make it feel a little unfinished, like the exposed internal sponge on the top of the tongue.

7. The Chicest Knit: Toteme Cardigan

My Review: In case you missed it, grey is the colour to invest in for autumn. Especially so for knitwear. Of course, there are multiple grey knits out there right now, but what I think allows this Toteme to take first prize, is that it's a cardigan with a collar. It gives it something a little different. It's 100% cashmere, so you just know how soft it feels, and it hangs beautifully on the body. I'm a size 12, and am wearing a medium here. There's no gaping between the buttons, it finishes just on the hips, I would say it's a slightly oversized fit, but is fine enough that I could tuck into a high waisted skirt if I wanted to.

Pros: Lovely tortoise shell buttons, comes in multiple colours including black and cream.

Cons: I'm not sure that you could really consider this a con, but because this style has a collar, it does make it slightly less restrictive on the ways of wearing it. Cashmere also has a tendency to stretch slightly as you wear it, so I also worry a little that this oversized fit would get even bigger after wear. If you like a neat look, go for a size down to your usual.

For me, autumn starts the second the calendar flicks to September, no matter the official date. Plus, the right bag needs to be able to take me from a busy workday into the weekend, so I don't have to switch over my essentials to a different style.

This isn't to say that I'm totally ignoring the autumn/winter 2025 trends, though. '90s-style minimalist shoulder bags are everywhere right now, and I'll admit I never thought they were for me. My Review: The Savette Slim Symmetry Pochette immediately caught my attention thanks to its shape and suede finish. Tactile without being too heavy, suede always feels so right in autumn. The bag is so compact that it's not suitable for office days; it's more of a daytime or weekend companion than a desk-to-evening hold-all. It's perfect for the essentials: phone, small wallet, keys and maybe a compact mirror and a lip product. What surprised me was how well it worked with my outfit that day: wide-leg trousers, sweater vest, flats and a cropped trench. The finish was simple yet effective.

The structure is firm around the top handle, which gives it a smart edge, and because it's so small, it doubles nicely as an evening bag too, as long as you're travelling light. The suede holds its colour well, but I'd be cautious about damp weather and would advise giving it a coating of suede protectant. For the coming season, I could see myself pairing this with casual outfits that still have some structure, like a wool coat or tailored trousers.

My Review: I like to invest in a new work bag every year or two, and COS has nailed it this season with this suede tote. The dark-brown tone feels particularly relevant; it's softer than black but still grounded enough to go with everything in my autumn capsule wardrobe. The tote has a clean, pared-back look but is surprisingly spacious, which is exactly what I need for commuting days. It doesn't have compartments, so your phone, notebook and umbrella all would share the same space, but because it's big, that works in its favour, letting you pack what you need without worrying about rigid divisions.

3. DeMellier Hudson Bag

My Review: DeMellier's bags are simultaneously classic and modern. The Hudson is the perfect example: structured, elegant and incredibly versatile. The grainy leather makes it hard-wearing, which is something I always look for in an autumn bag, and the size is just right for everyday use. It also wins big on versatility. First, the many, many compartments are a major plus. It has a central zipped section plus pockets on either side, meaning you can organise your main essentials in the centre, keep your phone and keys where they're easy to reach and maybe pop a compact or power bank in a side pocket.

If I were taking this to work, I'd be able to fit a smaller laptop or iPad, plus a notebook, charger and some snacks. My 13-inch MacBook is too wide, so it wouldn't fit, but that's a trade-off I'd accept given how refined this style is. For a day out, you could throw in a water bottle, sunglasses case and more without issue, and the structure keeps the bag from slumping. Whilst trying this one out, I styled it with a Liberty scarf tied around the handle, and it instantly gave me Hermès Kelly vibes—playful but still elevated. The top handle and crossbody strap give you options, which is always useful when you're running around the city. For me, this ticks the day-to-night box easily.

4. H&M Crossbody Bag

My Review: H&M has been quietly releasing some impressive bags this season, with lots of suede styles garnering attention. To me, this leather crossbody feels like the underdog that deserves more recognition. It surprised me with its colour; it's very "mole"—that is, a blend of grey, brown and taupe tones in that muted middle ground which isn't quite warm and not quite cool. It would work beautifully with deep brown, forest green, charcoal and rust shades. The multiple compartments are a win too; there's a main section, a zippered inner pocket and a slip pocket, so you won't end up rummaging around for ages. It's faux leather, but the bag is so well made that I had to double-check. It honestly feels more premium than many other high-street offerings I've come across.

I love how you can dress this bag up or down. On a casual day, I'd style it with jeans, a slouchy jumper and Mary Jane flats, letting the bag rest casually over my shoulder. 5. Chloé Paddington Bag

My Review: The Paddington is back, and for me, it's a real full-circle moment. I remember watching my sisters carry theirs in the early 2000s and thinking it was the most stylish thing I'd ever seen. Fast forward, and Chloé has reissued it just as we're heading into a boho-comeback autumn. Speaking of which, the Granat colourway is a deep, wine-like hue that feels perfect for this time of year. It's rich without being too bold and would look amazing against a camel coat or saturated indigo denim.

The bag has all the charm of the original: the padlock and the slouchy shape, but introduces a slightly different leather finish, cleaner seams and a marginally slimmer silhouette in some colourways. The hardware is more refined and less bulky than older Paddington styles, and the edges are smoother, which gives it a little more polish. In terms of capacity, it's definitely roomy enough for daily essentials: a lipstick, a book, AirPods, a hairbrush, your phone, a compact and perhaps a small umbrella. The structure means it can take a bit of weight without falling flat. My Review: This is the bag that changed my mind about smaller, '90s-inspired shapes. When you think of ’90s bags, you might picture small shoulder or crossbody bags with subtly curved lines, a gloss, vinyl or lacquered finish, minimal hardware and compact shapes; back then, bags were about simplicity and attitude rather than load-carrying. This Arket lacquered crossbody fits that mould nicely: it has a glossy burgundy finish, clean lines, minimal embellishment and a sleek silhouette. Even though it's labelled a crossbody, I found that I could tie the strap higher so it sat under the arm more like a shoulder bag, which leans more into the '90s vibe.

2. COS Minimal Leather Trainers

My Review: Now that we’re on the same page that slimline trainers are back, it would be remiss of me not to mention COS's minimal leather trainers. Spotted on influencer Lucy Williams at the brand's spring/summer 2025 show in Athens, there was a distinct buzz in the Who What Wear UK office when these designer-looking trainers hit shelves. Now, I know what you’re thinking: high-street trainers? But hear me out. Known for their high-quality craftspersonship and ahead-of-the-trend designs, COS does trainers better than its competitors, in my humble opinion. Made from a 100% suede shell and soft leather lining, these honestly aren't too dissimilar in style from the aforementioned Dries Van Noten style. Instead of a round toe, though, they have a slightly square shape, along with a thicker, ridged rubber sole and leather-accent trims. To me, they're like a hybrid between the Nike Cortez vintage running design and the motorsport silhouette of the new Adidas Taekwondo, resulting in a minimalistic trainer that's truly wearable.

Again, I tried true to size and was pleasantly surprised. They felt snug with thick socks but not too tight (and remember, leather trainers naturally soften and give). Each colourway is contemporary without being overtly trendy or trying too hard. The pony-hair pair in particular looks so luxe IRL, and is an easy way to dip into one of autumn's biggest shoe trends. However, the suede style left me slightly disappointed. A pair taken from the shop floor, I couldn't help but notice the discolouration in the black suede. Likely a result of repeated try-ons, there were paler spots where the shoes had seemingly rubbed against each other or another item of clothing, causing the dye to fade somewhat. This is the beauty of try-ons, though; I can truly test out an item for you before you buy, and had I purchased sight unseen, I wouldn't have been best pleased about this.

To give the trainers a proper road-test, I styled them with some of COS's key pieces for autumn: the Sculpted Merino Wool Jacket and the gloriously soft Brushed Cashmere Cardigan, both of which surpassed my expectations. The jacket is lightweight and fluid, a perfect transitional piece crafted from 100% wool, whilst the cardigan, which I've tried on before, was every bit as soft as I remembered. All in all, these trainers are perfect for those looking for a pared-back, easy-to-style shoe with a high-end feel that won't break the bank.

3. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

My Review: When I saw our senior shopping editor, Marina Avraam, rocking a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 trainers a few weeks ago, I was reminded just how great they are. Thin-soled and available in bright colours, the Mexico 66 features crossover stripes with an aesthetic reminiscent of Adidas Samba and Gazelle, just not as mainstream. Finding fans from fashion people to supermodels (Bella Hadid, here's looking at you), the popular neon yellow colourway was originally worn by Uma Thurman with her iconic yellow-and-black two-piece from Kill Bill Volume 1, which was released in 2003.

Since then, these trainers have filtered into mainstream, in an ever-expanding array of colourways that now includes a particularly bold silver style. This everywhere-but-somehow-also-under-the-radar trainer is constantly being worn by the coolest of fashion people, but I had yet to try it myself, so this was the perfect opportunity to put it to the test. I took my normal size in both pairs I tried (yellow and silver), and was genuinely surprised when they were a good fit. The silhouette looks deceptively narrow, so I tried them with my thickest socks, yet they were comfortable through and through.

Made from 100% cow leather, they’re smooth to the touch and glide onto the feet with ease. There's a definite throw-on-and-go energy to them, and each colour variant brings something a little different. Whether you're looking for a bold, contrasting shade or subtle minimalism, you’ll find a pair to match your vibe. 4. Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers

My Review: Now, I need to preface this by saying that I am not a fan of the Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers, and thus won't be subscribing to the "sneakerina" trend. From Iris Law to Dua Lipa, fashion's It girls have been gravitating towards this ballet flat-trainer hybrid for a romantically cool edge for some time now. With a low-profile design complete with several straps that bind the shoe to the foot, these ballet trainers offer all the comfort of a trainer (thanks to the rubber sole) whilst retaining a delicate aesthetic only ballet flats can achieve.

Because of my initial scepticism, I put these trainers to the test—hard. And as I sit here typing this, I have to eat my words. Surprisingly, they delivered, and my mind might be changed. The rubber sole makes them super-comfortable, especially if you’re someone who racks up 10,000 steps a day like me. The straps hold your feet in place, and the cut is just high enough that there's no toe cleavage on show (which is my preference). I stayed true to size, and the fit was spot on.

Adding a playful finish to the everyday blue jeans I was wearing when I tried them on, they added an IYKYK feel to my casual 'fit. Upon leaving the store, I suddenly found myself surrounded by a multitude of fashion people who had added delicate ballet satins and a plethora of charms to make them more individual. All in all, I have to admit that these trainers have all the makings of a trending style worth investing in if you're after something different, especially for those on-the-go looks that trainers do best.

My Review: It's not just retro flat soles making a strong comeback in the trainers sphere; chunky white sneakers are still very cool. But having moved on from the era of maximalist Balenciaga "dad" trainers, the coolest fashion people are now gravitating towards the Salomon XT 6 GTX. Depending on your taste, you might be thinking, "Surely not?", but thanks in part to Rihanna's co-sign, these ultra-functional trainers have gained serious traction—pun intended.

So here we are in mid-September. The air is crisper, my summer dresses are packed away and layering pieces have once again taken centre stage in my wardrobe. While normally our Great Try-On series sees Who What Wear UK editors roadtesting the new collections from our favourite well-known brands, this year, I decided to dedicate my time to trying on some of the most elevated cashmere pieces across every budget—from timeless high-street finds to investment knits you can genuinely justify. Few fabrics feel as instantly luxurious, or as enduring, as cashmere, and the right piece will see you through season after season. Worn with jeans, leggings, over dresses, or even styled with sequins when party season arrives, it’s a true wardrobe hero. That’s why I thought it was about time someone hit the shops and tried on as many cashmere jumpers and cardigans as possible, with the mission of identifying the very best of the best.

Below, I’ve focused on styles that balance quality, fit and comfort. I tried on pieces at different price points, paid close attention to how they look and feel and narrowed the edit down to those that genuinely deserve a place in your wardrobe. My Review: Okay, I’m cheating slightly with this first pick because I already own the COS Chunky Cashmere Jumper in black—I bought it last year after reading our shopping editor Florrie's rave review and spotting it on stylish people everywhere, from London to New York. If you're even remotely considering investing in it, let me assure you now: you will not be disappointed.

This year, COS has brought the jumper back (to no one’s surprise) and it’s just as good, if not better. Alongside staple shades like black, navy and grey, the brand has also added fresh new hues, including a soft pale pink and a classic camel. I tried on almost every colour in-store and they are all gorgeous—versatile, elevated and fantastic quality.

So, let’s talk details. For a high-street piece, this jumper sits at the higher end of the price spectrum, but the quality truly justifies it. It’s made from 100% cashmere—no blends, no synthetics—and the knit is thick, warm and incredibly soft without being heavy or bulky. It has a classic boxy silhouette that gives structure without swamping your frame and the ribbed neckline, cuffs and hem add a nice finishing touch.

In terms of sizing, I’m usually a UK 12–14 and I’m wearing a size small in the photo above. Last year, I bought the medium, which also fits beautifully and gives a slightly more relaxed feel. But this year, I’m leaning into a neater silhouette and the small just felt right. Honestly, the sizing difference is subtle, so it really comes down to your fit preference. If you're a size 6 or 8, you'd want to try the XS, but be warned that this will probably still be pretty roomy on you! It's also worth noting that this jumper, like most cashmere pieces, can't go in the washing machine. However, it does hand-wash surprisingly well. I’ve washed mine a bunch of times since I purchased it last November and it’s held its shape and softness beautifully.

My honest review of the COS Chunky Cashmere Jumper? It’s as close to perfect as you can get. If you know me, you’ll know I don’t part with my money unless I genuinely love something, so take it as a sign that I walked away with the new pale pink version to go alongside my OG black number. That should tell you just how good this jumper really is. The fit, the feel, the quality...everything about it hits the mark, and although there are designer iterations out there that are just as nice (more on that below), this high-street buy really takes the top spot for me.

2. Jenni Kayne Amelia Cashmere Jumper

My Review: If you're thinking about investing in knitwear this season, Jenni Kayne is well worth a look. I recently tried on the Amelia cashmere jumper and was genuinely so impressed. It’s one of those pieces that feels quietly luxurious without trying too hard, which is exactly what I want from my wardrobe.

For a designer label, the price is relatively fair—certainly not cheap, but not unreasonable given the quality. It’s made from 100% cashmere and that really does come through in the feel: soft, warm and substantial, you can tell this is a knit that is going to last you for years. The cut is relaxed, with a round neck and slightly longer sleeves, giving it that effortless, I-just-threw-this-on-and-look-amazing feel. The brand says the Amelia jumper is true to size, but I’d suggest sizing down if you prefer a slightly neater fit. I tried the large and could have easily gone for a medium—the length in particular felt quite generous, so something to keep in mind if you’re on the shorter side. For reference, I’m 5'7 and the large sat around my mid-thigh.

I tried it in grey, and while the images and lighting might not do it justice, I have to say it's a spot-on shade: not too dark, not too blue, just a soft, pale tone that’s incredibly easy to wear. It also comes in camel, ivory and black, so all the classics, really, if you’re looking for something timeless.

All in all, this is a very good jumper. Quietly elegant, beautifully made and the sort of thing you’ll reach for over and over again. I'm impressed, and if my wallet could've stretched to it, I would've taken it home that very same day.

3. Reformation Cashmere Clara Cardigan

My Review: Reformation’s Clara cardigan is one of those cult pieces the Who What Wear UK team has been raving about for some time, so I decided—reluctantly—to give it a proper test run. I say reluctantly because, full disclosure: I never wear cardigans.

I have a fuller bust and wide hips, so I’ve always found cardigans a bit unforgiving—often too fitted, too buttoned-up and generally not my go-to. So yes, I was slightly apprehensive to test this out. And yes, the Clara cardigan did come up small, just as I expected. I'm typically a size 12–14, depending on the brand (and the day), and I tried the large. It fit, but it wasn’t a silhouette I felt entirely at ease in. That said, it is true to size—it’s just a neater, cropped cut by design, which might not work for everyone depending on proportions or preferences.

That aside, the quality is genuinely lovely. The knit is soft and fine, and I can absolutely see why so many people love it and return to it in multiple colours. I went for the red—a bold choice for me—and I have to admit, it was fun to wear. I tried it with black barrel jeans, as with all the knits in this review, and I instantly lifted my complexion and outfit.

I can absolutely see why this is such a bestseller for the brand, and if you're looking for the perfect layering piece as we head into autumn, I think this is a very strong contender.

4. LouLou Studio Polo Cashmere Jumper

My Review: I love LouLou studio for Parisian-inspired pieces that feel elegant but also fresh, and unsurprisingly, this knit was just as gorgeous as everything else in the brand's autumn 2025 collection. Let’s start with the texture, because honestly, it’s the first thing you notice. This jumper is impossibly comfy and probably the softest I tried on for this story. It’s made from 100% pure cashmere, and boy does it show.

The cut is slightly cropped with a boxy silhouette, which is not good if you're particularly tall, but still incredibly chic. I tried on a medium, which fit well but felt just a tad snug across the hem, so I’d personally size up to a large for a more relaxed, slouchy fit. They didn't have that in stock and the medium was definitely the right fit on the shoulders. The sleeves felt a little long, but that's the design, and the hem hit me just at the top of my hips, making it perfect for pairing with high-rise jeans or skirts.

I also want to highlight the polo-style collar and button detailing, which add just the right touch of trendiness to an otherwise simple and classic piece. When you're parting with a significant amount of hard-earned cash (this knit retails for £430), you want something with lasting appeal. That doesn’t mean it has to be plain or basic—the subtle design details on this polo keep it feeling fresh, yet versatile enough to see you through many seasons and years to come. A win-win in my book.

5. M&S Cashmere Cardigan

My Review: Ah, another cardigan! You can’t say I didn’t give this try-on my all. This time, it’s an M&S number I’m road-testing. If you know me, you’ll know I love M&S and to be honest, there’s very little it can do wrong in my eyes. So naturally, I had high expectations walking into the Bond Street store to try on the much-loved cashmere collection.

I picked up the classic crewneck cardigan in a size 14 and in a colour I wouldn’t usually go for—I really wanted to focus on the fit and quality of the piece without being swayed by my usual go-to (read: black) colour choice. And of course, it was lovely. In terms of fit and feel, this easily matches up to higher-end pieces I tried on—some of which didn’t even make the cut. If you told me it was a £300 jumper from Net-a-Porter, I’d believe you. It wasn’t the absolute softest I tried, granted, but for the price, I think it’s superb. The fit felt spot on. Now remember, I’m not a cardigan person, so while I probably wouldn’t wear this out and about on its own just yet, I did seriously consider buying it anyway. My Review: Finally, Zara. I’ll admit, I didn’t originally plan to include Zara in this cashmere try-on. I hadn’t heard much about their knitwear and assumed I’d be more impressed by the more premium or luxury brands. But in the name of research—and because I’d spotted this particular jumper on their website that morning—I popped in for a quick look. Spoiler alert: I was genuinely blown away by how good this piece is.

Before we carry on, let’s get one thing out of the way: this isn’t 100% cashmere. It’s a blend—60% cashmere and 40% wool—but honestly, you wouldn’t know it from the feel. It’s incredibly soft, war and genuinely rivals some of the full cashmere knits I’ve tried, even those at a much higher price point. It retails for £89.99, which feels like excellent value for the quality, in my opinion.

In terms of fit, I tried it on in a size large, which gave me a lovely, relaxed look. If you’re after something a bit neater or more tailored, you could easily size down. I’d probably go for a medium if I were ordering it—which I am seriously considering doing this week. I tried it in a very pale beige hue that doesn’t seem to be available online at the moment, but there are other great colour options, including an elegant navy and a cream version.

As a minimalist, my wardrobe is full of neutrals and basics ready to be brought to life with this joyful infusion of checks. 2. Reiss Oversized Leather Jacket

My Review: Leather jackets are a perennial classic, and this season I've already spotted stylish people reaching once again for this particular style. For 2025, it seems that bomber styles with elasticated hems and fluid forms are the key style to consider, and Reiss's Oversized Leather Jacket ticks all the boxes.

What I love about Reiss's style is that it sticks to the classic motifs of this kind of leather jacket, ensuring that it has a long-lasting appeal. Press-stud epaulettes accent the shoulders, with bold front pockets and seamwork that denote the style. The added elevation comes from the deep burgundy shade that translates better in person than in pictures. My Review: One of my favourite parts of autumn's return is the textural update that occurs, in particular, the return of suede. After being set aside over the summer months, I'm always keen to add this smooth fabric back into the fold, bringing contrast to classic cottons, denims and knits throughout the season. This autumn, suede jackets are once again on the rise, and I searched for an elevated take, leading me straight to Zara's Oversized Suede Leather Blazer.

As one of Zara's more premium offerings, this jacket is made from 100% suede leather. The brown shade is primed to fit into any autumn palette, and I adore the premium look of the deeper tone here. My Review: After spotting a series of stylish people all styling their looks with the Rohé Mandarin Double-Faced Wool Jacket, I figured I had to see if the hype was really worth it. I'll save you the anticipation, it did. If you're searching for a piece that has the soft movement of a light knit, but the finishing look of a sleek jacket, then this is certainly one to consider.

My Review: If there's one thing autumn calls for, it's a jacket switch-up, and I was pleasantly surprised by the outerwear offering when I walked into M&S this week. From cropped, croc-print PVC pieces to the most gorgeous olive suedette number, I was spoilt for choice when it came to my try-on, but this boxy leather-look piece really stood out. It could be styled with so many outfits, and it's also caught the eye of many of my colleagues (I've already seen it hanging on the coat stand in the office!).

Here, I've paired it with another item I was desperate to try. I've heard a lot about these M&S Palazzo Jeans, so when I saw the new black colourway in my size, I knew I had to style them up. My Review: An autumn look that has always lived rent-free in my mind is Sally Albright's Bermuda shorts and loafer outfit from When Harry Met Sally. I've wanted to find a good pair of these shorts to try and replicate it, and I was really impressed with this pair from M&S. I sized up from a size 10 to a 12, and I was very happy I did, because they sat nicely on my hips and didn't feel too high-waisted.

In terms of a staple loafer, to me, it doesn't really get better than this brown suede pair. I've been dying to get my hands on them for a few seasons now; they're always coming in and out of stock online, so definitely keep your notifications on! There are always pairs in store in case you can't find them on the site. Another M&S classic I didn't want to pass up trying was this cashmere jumper. I'm a long-time fan of the brand's cashmere selection, and I love this mole shade for autumn. I'm picturing it paired with all the brown in my wardrobe.

My Review: I don't ever really think to head to M&S when I'm putting together more "out-out" looks, but as soon as I saw these knee-high riding boots, I knew I wanted to put something together with a short skirt and leather jacket. My Review: How much is there to say about a white T-shirt, right? Well, as someone who wears a white tee and jeans at least twice a week, I have a lot of opinions on what makes this simple piece of clothing just right. Surprisingly, despite my colleagues raving about the COS Clean-Cut T-Shirt, I’d never actually tried it. This now feels like a huge mistake, as upon trying it on, I immediately wanted to buy two (so I always have a backup when one is in the wash).

COS is known for its quality, and this classic tee is no exception. In my opinion, it’s the perfect weight; light enough that it can be layered under knits and jackets but heavy enough not to show the outlines or seams of lingerie (as you can hopefully see). The cut is also great (for reference, I opted for my usual size small), slightly cropped so that it works both tucked and untucked from jeans or trousers and relaxed in the body and sleeves.

My Review: You're guaranteed to find loafers in the shoe rotation of many a fashion person come autumn, but in recent years, they’ve solidified themselves as a true wardrobe staple. When looking to recommend a pair, Reformation seemed like a good choice. As a team, we love the brand, not least for its sustainably minded designs and general cool appeal, but also the tried and tested quality of each piece.

I opted for the chunky-soled Agathea style, not only because I’ve seen Gigi Hadid wearing them, but they’re also the perfect balance between edgy and classic. Although the Reformation website says they run large, I tried on my normal size, and they fit really well. I also generally wear a pair of socks with loafers, so I appreciate a bit of room. In the store, I tried the loafers on with a pair of wide-leg jeans (side note: Reformation denim is also very good!), and loved how they looked with denim. I know if these lived in my wardrobe, I’d certainly feel a lot less sad about shelving my flip-flops every summer.

3. H&M Wide Trousers

My Review: I’ll choose separates over a dress any day, but particularly during layering season, so finding a good pair of trousers is always a win. I was first drawn to this H&M pair because of the pinstripe print. Again, maybe it’s the back-to-school feeling that makes me sway towards a grey pair of trousers in autumn, but they’re a staple in my year-round wardrobe and can be styled up (like here, with a shirt) or down (with a tee or casual knit).

I’m 5’9”, so I sometimes struggle to find the right length in trousers, but these worked, hitting nicely below my ankle. If you’re shorter than me, they’d skim the floor a little more and might need a slight heel, but still a good length nevertheless. As wide-leg trousers go, these definitely sway more straight leg than an ultra-wide palazzo, making them a good everyday option. They’re made from a comfortable jersey fabric and have an elasticated waist, but fit on the smaller side, so I’d size up (I’m wearing a medium, for reference).

4. The Frankie Shop Bea Single-Breasted Stretch-Woven Blazer

My Review: If there's one brand that knows how to nail a cool-girl basic, it’s The Frankie Shop. Everything is thoughtfully designed, often with a detail that gives it that point of difference from similar pieces on the market. If you’re a blazer-wearer, you’ll no doubt have heard of The Frankie Shop's styles. I tried on the Bea Single Breasted Blazer and immediately understood the hype. Yes, it may be pricier than blazers from other mid-range brands, but for a piece that will work this hard in your wardrobe all year round (and for years to come), I think it’s justifiable. Plus, the cut and colour definitely look expensive.

Sizing is something to note, as it comes up quite oversized. For reference, I’m wearing a small, and I’d say it’s giving the perfect amount of nonchalance. I loved how this looked styled simply with a white tee and jeans, but I would also throw it on over a dress or pair it with the matching tailored trousers for an elevated look.

5. Arket Alpaca-Wool Blend Jumper

My Review: It may not be the right weather for a jumper as soon as autumn hits, but when it does get chillier, I want to be wearing this Arket knit. The alpaca-wool blend is naturally insulating—I felt very cosy—and softer on the skin than sheep's wool. The classic, oversized fit is nice and slouchy but doesn't look sloppy (I’m wearing a medium), and works both tucked into trousers and untucked for a more casual look.

This jumper is also a firm favourite with the fashion crowd, often going out of stock in popular colours (so make sure to snap it up if there’s one you like!). There are currently nine shades to choose from; the beige, which I tried, would slip seamlessly into my autumn colour palette, but I also love the chic grey, and I bet the burgundy is going to be a popular one this year.

6. With Nothing Underneath The Boyfriend Shirt

My Review: With Nothing Underneath is another Who What Wear favourite. When the brand launched, its sole focus was shirts (it has since expanded into an array of quietly elegant wardrobe essentials), so it’s no surprise that it knows what it's doing here. Offering a range of cuts, silhouettes and fabrics, there is a lot to choose from, and hopefully a style to suit everyone. I opted for The Boyfriend, which is exactly what it sounds like: a loose fit with slightly dropped shoulders and a double-buttoned cuff. It’s designed to be slightly oversized if you take your regular size (I’m wearing a 10).

Most of the brand's shirts come in a range of colours and patterns, and the blue stripes felt both timeless and on-trend (stripes are making a big comeback this autumn—yay!). Before I’d even opened the parcel it came in, I was imagining the multiple ways I’d wear this shirt; layered under a knitted vest, buttoned to the top with a tie and tailored trousers or simply unbuttoned over a T-shirt for an easy, casual ‘fit.

Spring has officially sprung. There, I said it. And it's true! The spring equinox has finally rolled around, and we can start dressing lighter, brighter and more comfortably for the season ahead. I for one am excited to be unshackling myself from heavy leather and wool jackets, mountains of thermal layers and chunky boots that weigh me down.

I can now reach for softer layers and more breathable fabrics, and can maybe even bare an ankle or two. At the moment, the weather is a bit of a tease before the T-shirt days of summer, but we Brits unabashedly know and love "light jacket weather" and the great lift in mood and SAD relief it brings.

When shopping on the great British high street for spring, I find myself mainly seeking out wardrobe foundations—items I know I'll come back to time and again to anchor any outfit at any time of year. I'm always keen to hone my capsule wardrobe; the tighter the edit, the better. I like to dress with ease and not have to overthink putting an outfit together in the morning, so investing in timeless buys and classic pieces has become my go-to approach.

This also means I can feel chic and effortless in an instant, which I know stylish French women have been doing for aeons. This mindset goes perfectly in hand with the spring season—I can pop on a simple T-shirt, jeans and a lightweight jacket with a chic handbag, and the outfit has pretty much built itself, all with very little fuss. Outfits that can transition well from day to night also appeal to me; something which I can swap in a pair of sling-back kitten heels to speedily take me from desk to dinner. Et voila!

With all this in mind, I tasked myself with an in-store try-on at H&M. I wanted to check out its latest offering, see what simple yet sophisticated pieces I could find on a budget and also selfishly squeeze a little bit of sunshine into my day before the familiar London clouds inevitably rolled in. 1. Short Brown Jacket + Flared Jeans + Heeled Boots + Leopard Faux-Fur Bag

My Review: I have and undoubtedly always will be a sucker for any item of clothing that comes in a chocolate shade. Less harsh against my skin than black and instantly bringing a richness and expensive appeal to any outfit, deep brown is something my brain will automatically zero in on in any store. It says quiet luxury like no other colour and pairs delectably with denim and soft beige tones, and if you're feeling trend-focused, butter yellow or powder pink would partner beautifully too.

This short jacket has all the appeal of a regular trench coat, but the cropped silhouette makes it feel like you could wear it much like an overshirt or top, in that it feels comfortable and relaxed when worn indoors. Cropped trenches have been popping up on fashion people everywhere, so I know I'm in good company with this high-street take on the style. Made from 100% cotton, this piece feels premium and soft on the skin. It has now sold out online but is still available in stores.

I paired it with a premium silk-blend white tee and a high-waisted pair of deep-blue flared jeans, which felt a little '70s but also thoroughly modern. I accessorised using a pair of black heeled boots with this season's favourite square-toe shape, plus a faux-fur leopard-print shoulder bag. I took the trench in a large which felt bang-on for my size 10/12 physique, and the tee and jeans in a UK 10.

2. White Denim Shacket + Lace Midi Skirt + Slingback Leopard Heels + Shoulder Bag

Style Notes: Next up, this lace skirt was calling my name. Again in my favourite shade of rich brown, when I first saw it on the hanger, I wasn't sure if it might need a slip underneath, but once on the body, the placement of the lace actually provides enough modesty; although an undergarment or shapewear of your choice wouldn't go amiss. I know lace skirts have been seriously trending, but this piece feels very much like something that would remain in my forever wardrobe, and can certainly be dressed up or down. I took it in a large, which felt breathable and comfortable, with a pull-on, simple elasticated waist.

I matched the skirt with this super-soft white denim shacket, which gave the look a fresh, daytime feeling, with the loose fit and shape giving my knicker-line a bit of coverage. I popped the viscose-blend ribbed tank on underneath, which is a luxurious upgrade to H&M's ever-popular cotton variation. To polish the look, I added this laptop-friendly shoulder bag in a nutty brown shade, along with a pair of slingback leopard-print kitten heels. Topping it all off, I picked up a pair of contemporary gold-rimmed sunglasses, which subtly teamed with the hardware on the bag. Très chic, if you ask me!

3. Trench Coat + White Jeans + Woven Slingback Heels + East-West Bag

Style Notes: For my third look, I sought out this calf-length trench, which comes in a classic beige shade. Under certain lighting, it looks a little khaki-tinted, which I'm not opposed to. For the most part, the weather is still calling for us to button our trench coats to the top, which I think looks utterly chic and gives this one in particular the look and feel of a midi-dress. I nonchalantly tied the belt into a quick knot; a technique that instantly gives the waist a cinched-in shape. The trench feels super light yet crisp, and harks back to the timeless shapes from heritage houses Burberry and Aquascutum, albeit at a fraction of the cost. I took this in a size large, which means layering up underneath won't be a problem if necessary.

I wanted to lighten up the palette with a pair of white jeans and a long-sleeved, cream-toned tee. The jeans are a slim, straight fit, with a slightly ankle-grazing hem, which isn't a cut I would normally go for, but they felt classic and very French. To punctuate the look, I opted for a pair of slingback woven-cotton heels, a little higher than a kitten, with a square toe that feels intentional and makes them look 10 times more expensive than they are.

I practically leapt across the store to grab this smart East-West bag with gold buckle details, which makes it look like something straight out of the '90s. My only contention is that it isn't leather, so I'd prefer to keep seeking out a similar style made from a more durable and luxurious fabric; perhaps suede or nubuck. And then, for that final flourish of je ne c'est quoi, I donned a pair of sunnies which perfectly blend a D-frame and cat-eye—both shapes I feel complement my heart-shaped face. If you were to think these Bottega Veneta, I honestly wouldn't blame you.

So, when The Great Try-On came along for spring 2025 and we were let loose on the shopping streets of London to put the latest new-in collections to the test, it's no surprise that the team came back with tonnes of opinions, pictures, videos and expert insights. We're pretty sure that between us we tried hundreds of products, from trench coats to T-shirts, jeans to dresses and plenty of accessories. Divide and conquer we did, with some editors trying the high street's finest and some heading to find the luxury buys worth investing in.

While you'll find all our in-depth, brand-specific reviews here, below you'll find only the best of the best. The 14 elite items that impressed us the most. Whether for their quality, timelessness, wearability or sheer beauty. Suede jackets were a standout across the board this year, but Zara and Massimo Dutti produced the best versions according to Deputy Editor, Maxine Eggenberger, and Editor in Chief, Hannah Almassi. Unsurprisingly Toteme impressed me with its stunning take on the barn jacket, but their jeans were another particular winner that came out of left field. Contributing Editor Chloe Street put the bag we've all been dreaming of, Bottega Veneta's Andiamo, to the test, and it passed with flying colours. Don't sleep on COS's delicious chocolate brown linen-blend dress which News Writer Natalie Munro is predicting to be the sellout dress of the summer (I mean, how chic and comfy?!). 1. ZARA SUEDE LEATHER JACKET

Maxine's Review: "Like so many other people, I've been contemplating investing in a suede jacket for months, but never quite finding the right style for me. I love blazers, but I wanted a jacket that worked with all of my outfits—jeans, dresses, skirts, the lot. And sometimes a blazer just doesn't quite cut it.

Before I headed in store, I had a quick browse on Zara.com to see if anything piqued my interest. Of course, there are no guarantees that the items I like online will still be in store, but it always helps to have an idea of things to look out for. As soon as I spotted this jacket, I knew I was on to a good thing. Even digitally the suede looked very high quality, and I enjoyed how the barn jacket silhouette had been translated into a premium material.

You can imagine my shock, then, when I came across a full rail of them in the corner of the store. Not only were they discretely merchandised, but there was full stock. Something that never seems to be in Zara stores. I picked up a medium, threw it on with what I was wearing and it just worked.

It's weighty, flanked with robust hardware and has a very elevated feel to it. It's lined well and hangs just so from the body. Featuring a roomy cut (I'm wearing a medium here), it'll work with layers underneath but I also know it'll look the chic part thrown over a tee with blue jeans or perhaps a cotton skirt when temperatures rise. Full disclosure, I didn't buy anything after my try on, as I'm on a spending hiatus until the end of the month, but I'm really hoping this is still available when I de-freeze my bank account."

2. TOTEME TWISTED SEAM FULL LENGTH JEANS

Emily's Review: "I was hella impressed by the fit and shape of these jeans. While the stiffer raw denim style doesn't scream spring, I've been searching for a perfect darker, smarter jean for so long that I ended up purchasing this exact pair. They looked really chic with just a simple white tank top too, so I know I can wear them in summer and through autumn/winter too. Here I'm wearing a size 27 in a 30 leg and I have a mid-heel boot on for reference.

The lighter blue pair are perfect for spring and just so versatile. If I didn't already have a boat load of jeans this colour, they would have come home with me too. While I'm only short at 5'2", I enjoyed how the full length style puddled over my loafers to create a cooler straight-leg vibe than a crop would (these are size 27 waist, 30 length)."

3. SAINT LAURENT SUIT

Chloe's Review: "Suits and ties have been bubbling away as a trend for several seasons now, but it was arguably the stellar spring/summer 2025 Saint Laurent collection Anthony Vaccarello showed back in September that really put "boyish" tailoring on our radars. The image of Bella Hadid sauntering the runway in a black, double-breasted wool suit, white shirt, black wide tie and tinted shades became one of the most-shared from the season and bumped Saint Laurent tailoring to the top of my wish list.

Just as Bottega Veneta is known for its leather and Chanel for its bouclé, Saint Laurent, the brand which invented tuxedos for women (with founder Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking), is famous for its tailoring. And the suits you’ll find in Saint Laurent stores this spring are truly some of the best we've been treated to in years. The Bordeaux-coloured double-breasted wool suit I tried was look 19 from the S/S 25 runway, and the moment I put it on, I understood why people wax lyrical about Saint Laurent suiting.

The jacket is power-shouldered but there’s an ever-so-slight cinch at the waist to give it a softer, more "feminine" shape. I felt instantly confident and put-together without feeling swamped by fabric. The jacket is long enough that you could wear it over a black minidress for a date-night look, ensuring maximum cost-per-wear.

The trousers are my favourite part of the ensemble. They’re super wide and yet so expertly cut that they’re really flattering; the double-pleat front gathers into a nipped-in waist trim enough that you could also wear them separately with a bodysuit and heels for a dinner outfit. I am 5’9”, and they were a bit too long on me even when I tried them with 11cm heels, so I expect most would need a tailor to take some of the length off—a service Saint Laurent offers in-store, but you could do it more affordably elsewhere. The same suit also comes in grey, taupe and black, but the store I visited had just one sample as the pieces have only just launched."

4. SEZANE LACE BLOUSE + TRENCH COAT

Florrie's Review: "The first item I picked up in Sezane was the Clyde Trench Coat. Years after its release, this trench remains a timeless staple for the milder months, ready to become a wardrobe hero when spring rolls around (and knowing the British weather, destined to be worn on repeat until the end of autumn). It certainly didn't disappoint. I chose a size 10, my usual choice in outerwear, and the fit was spot on. Whilst Sézane hones in on the classic design of a trench, the finer details are what makes this coat constantly sell out. The placement of the shoulder seams gives a relaxed feel rather than a structured silhouette, adding to the ease of the piece, whilst a checked lining gives a playful nod to the brand's French heritage.

A delicate guipure lace shirt was next to call my name, intricately woven to bring a contrasting texture to a classic button-down design, and whilst it has no lining, the placement means you can wear this with a nude bra and still feel put-together. It's a truly beautiful piece that would elevate any spring wardrobe."

5. COS LINEN-BLEND MAXI DRESS

Natalie's Review: "My ultimate goal for this try-on? Find the perfect easy-breezy dress, and this chocolate-hued number secured the top spot before anything else even had a chance. Crafted from heavyweight linen, it strikes the ideal balance: light enough to keep me cool on scorching days as we move into summer but substantial enough to drape beautifully and maintain a refined, luxurious finish.

In a deep brown shade, it feels like a seamless transition into the warmer months—more effortless than a bright colour yet just as seasonally appropriate. But what truly won me over was the silhouette. Billowy but structured, it delivers a chic, voluminous shape without overwhelming my frame. The wide cut means it moves beautifully as I walk, creating the perfect amount of swish with every step. And with the all-important addition of pockets, what more could I ask for?

Falling just above my ankles, it’s a true maxi on me. If you’re on the shorter side, you might consider hemming it, whilst taller people may find it closer to a midi length. For styling, I loved it with simple black flats and a small clutch bag, but I can see it working just as easily for an evening look with a strappy sandal, or even paired with a suede boot as we move through early spring’s chillier weeks."

6. ALIGNE DAPHNE BLAZER + MIDI SKIRT

Imani's Review: "As a true wardrobe staple, a black blazer can elevate any outfit, and I couldn't not try Aligne's Daphne style. I'm always looking for pieces that can transition from work to play, and this exceeded my expectations. The waist is cinched with a buckle at the back which helps to nip you in, and when paired with this A-line skirt, casual chic is easily achieved. I'd say the blazer is true to size, and I found a UK size 8 slightly too tight around the bust—worth taking into consideration, as this is a style you'd wear buttoned-up more than open.

The skirt fell long enough for my preference (I'm 5'10" and it hit just above my ankles), but I found it to run a little big, so I went for an 8 rather than my usual 10, and it was a great fit. For me, a reliable cotton skirt is a necessity in the run-up to summer, and this one just became my new favourite. It has an easy-breezy quality with a stretchy waistband and a slight balloon hem which creates visual interest, and I know it would elevate even the most mundane outfit."

7. MASSIMO DUTTI SUEDE JACKET

Hannah's Review: "Okay, confession time! I was on my way out of the store in Battersea Power Station (which, by the way, is so nice and peaceful), and I spotted this tan suede jacket flat on a table. How had I missed it when I did my initial swoop of the building?! Ignore the rest of the outfit as those are my own pieces from other brands, and let's zone in on this perfect little suede creation. Firstly, the suede feels like heaven. The colour is beyond expensive-looking, and I adore the slightly worn-in finish, which is something I spotted a lot on the autumn/winter 2025 runways, especially at my go-to brand for inspiration: Prada.

The size 12 is perfect for a slightly oversized cut, and I could still layer a knit underneath on colder mornings. I would wear this gem of a jacket with everything from this pleated skirt outfit to breezy summer dresses or with leopard-print jeans on the weekend. It was my number-one pick of the entire try-on. I have no negatives, and I think it needs to come home with me."

8. BOTTEGA VENETA ANDIAMO BAG

Chloe's Review: "When it comes to investing in a designer handbag, I am personally most interested in the pieces that will still feel relevant and beautiful 10, 20 or even 50 years from now. Designers produce several bag styles each season; some are Instagram catnip, some have more longevity and some you just know are destined to become a future classic. That’s exactly what happened when Matthieu Blazy debuted the Andiamo as part of his sophomore collection for Bottega in September 2022.

Meticulously crafted from fine calf leather in the Bottega Veneta atelier, the Andiamo—which means "let’s go" in Italian—uses the intrecciato leather technique (a brand signature) and is the perfect everyday bag. The original is similar in size to that of a Birkin, although much less rigid and it will fit a 13" laptop, making it great for the occasional commute. I love that the boxy top-handle design is smart enough for meetings whilst the bag has a slouchy element that gives it a super-chic nonchalance. It’s also very versatile; the leather rope with knotted metal hardware that loops through several holes on the upper can be rejigged to make a shoulder strap or a crossbody, and can even be removed entirely to be worn as a belt.

The Andiamo now comes in a smaller and larger size, an east-west silhouette and a clutch, but I’m drawn to the proportions of the original, which feels timeless. I fell for the deep tobacco-brown colour because it's deep and dark and thus will go with everything, but it feels more interesting and luxe than black. The brand has also just released the bag in an ecru colour that would be gorgeous with summer whites."

9. TOTEME COUNTRY JACKET

Emily's Review: "I'd heard incredible reviews from my fellow shopping editor, Florrie, after she also tried this jacket on recently, and it did not disappoint. I adored the silhouette of it—the pleats at the back give it a nice swing shape, especially when worn over simple slim trousers or jeans, and the wide cuffs on the sleeves also make it feel really design-led. These details along with the beautiful minimalist design of the pockets really make it standout from other similar barn jacket styles on the market right now. The organic cotton fabric is water-repelling to survive any unexpected showers, but it's also super lightweight, so it could definitely be worn into the summer months as well (especially in good old Blighty). The dark brown corduroy collar is a delicious touch. I will say it's really oversized, so while I normally opt for an 8-10, I went for a size 32 here which translates to a UK 6 and it was perfect for my petite (5'2") frame."

10. REFORMATION VIKA DRESS + CASHMERE SWEATER

Ava's Review: "This has the hallmarks of a classic Reformation outfit: a gorgeous floral maxi dress, strappy white heeled sandals and a slouchy sweater. Now, after trying it on and with warm weather on the horizon, I can also call this a classic "me in spring" outfit. There were so many charming dresses to choose from, but I was drawn to this sweet ditsy violet print because it’s unlike anything else I already own. (Sure, I have simple slip dresses and a couple of floral minis, yet nothing with a scoop neck and a thigh-high slit!).

I really like how strong the material of this dress is. Compared to other crepe fabrics I’ve worn, this feels incredibly durable to the touch whilst still being butter-soft—a quality that’s a testament to the substantial lining. In saying that, I do wish the lining featured the same print at the very least, as when I walked around, I could glimpse the block white layer underneath in the mirror. I'm wearing a size 8 here, and it was as slim-cut as Reformation’s website claims it to be. It might be too body-conscious for some tastes—it clung to my waist and hips like glue—but when styled with the knit, I felt it drew the eye away from this tightness.

I had heard incredible things about Reformation’s knitwear and was thrilled when this piece lived up to my expectations. Made from a fine-gauge recycled cashmere blend, it has the perfect amount of slouch and structure whilst feeling ultra-fine (no clunky grandma knits here!). I threw on the Serenity Bare Sandal to finish and was impressed with how comfortable they were. I’ll attribute this to the high-quality cream-toned leather, even though I know they'd be a pain to keep clean and fresh-looking. I really liked the balance this outfit struck—it’s dressy but unfussy and would lend itself well to multiple occasions."

Sophie's Review: "For my third look, I sought out this calf-length trench, which comes in a classic beige shade. Under certain lighting, it looks a little khaki-tinted, which I'm not opposed to. Toteme is a brand I'm shamelessly loyal to. Not just because it's incredibly adept at producing swoon-worthy cult buys that sweep through the internet's most stylish wardrobes. So, when I was set the task of heading into the London store to try on the brand's new spring collection and come back to you with the very best pieces, let's just say I was thrilled.

As a picky editor with extremely expensive taste (but a limited budget as a new mum), I would say I'm quite hard to impress these days. I totally fell for the practical yet elegant country jacket that I've already seen appearing on so many chic influencers. It taps into this trending style while being minimalist and classic enough to pull out every spring. I'm still dreaming of the buttery suede shirts that made my H&M T-shirt and jeans look like a million bucks, and I may or may not have left with a pair of the brand's famously good twisted seam jeans in tow.

Country Jacket + Raw Denim Twisted Seam Jeans

My Review: I'd heard incredible reviews from my fellow shopping editor, Florrie, after she also tried this jacket on recently, and it did not disappoint. I adored the silhouette of it—the pleats at the back give it a nice swing shape, especially when worn over simple slim trousers or jeans, and the wide cuffs on the sleeves also make it feel really design-led. These details along with the beautiful minimalist design of the pockets really make it standout from other similar barn jacket styles on the market right now. The organic cotton fabric is water-repelling to survive any unexpected showers, but it's also super lightweight, so it could definitely be worn into the summer months as well (especially in good old Blighty). The dark brown corduroy collar is a delicious touch. I will say it's really oversized, so while I normally opt for an 8-10, I went for a size 32 here which translates to a UK 6 and it was perfect for my petite (5'2") frame.

I'll touch on Toteme's twisted seam jeans more as we go on, but I was hella impressed by the fit and shape of these. While this stiffer raw denim style doesn't scream spring, I've been searching for a perfect darker, smarter jean for so long that I ended up purchasing this exact pair. They looked really chic with just a simple white tank top too, so I know I can wear them in summer and through autumn/winter too. Here I'm wearing a size 27 in a 30 leg and I have a mid-heel boot on for reference.

Suede Shirt + Chino Trousers

My Review: Anything suede always has my undivided attention. Of course, it emerged as a huge trend for autumn/winter but I love to see it continuing into the warmer months (we love a versatile fabric!) in the form of light shirts like this, jackets and accessories too (keep scrolling for more on that). Buttery soft and in the most gorgeous chestnut shade, this shirt is obviously more of an investment piece but would absolutely last you for years and years.

As for these trousers, I spotted them online recently and the elevated chino style really caught my eye (she loves a wide-leg trouser). I tried on a size 36/UK 8 (true to size or size down if in between), and once I'd fought my millennial urge to take a smaller size so that they were high waisted and fitted, I realised that I actually loved how they were meant to sit quite relaxed and low on the hip. Not only were they more comfortable like this, they looked a million times cooler.

Striped Shirt + Blue Twisted Seam Jeans

My Review: Who can resist a crisp cotton shirt for spring? Add a stripe and I'm totally sold. Toteme is expanding away from its totally neutral colour palette dipping into pinks and reds this season. And while I enjoy the idea of these pink trousers, I tried them and they just didn't feel worthy of a Toteme-level investment in the same way as the versatile beige pair above did. This shirt with a pinky red stripe felt like just enough of a nod to the lighter, brighter spring season while remaining timeless. It has a relaxed fit and this is the size 36.

I told you I loved the twisted seam jeans, and this lighter blue pair are perfect for spring and just so versatile. If I didn't already have a boat load of jeans this colour, they would have come home with me in an instant. While I'm only short at 5'2", I enjoyed how the full length style puddled over my loafers to create a cooler straight-leg vibe than a crop would (these are size 27 waist, 30 length).

Woven Stripe Co-Ord + Silk Knit

My Review: While probably completely impractical, especially with a one-year-old at home, I've always been powerless before a pair of cream trousers. There's nothing else that can make you look more rich, I swear. Add in a silky fluid finish and a drawstring waistband and I'm walking out the door with them. I'd definitely have to get these taken up to avoid trudging them through London's street dirt, but I like the idea that you can really dress these up or down. The co-ordinating top, in the same buttery yellow shade, worn together with heels would make for a lovely summer event ensemble. But I can also see them with a simple flip flop and bikini top on summer holidays. As a test, I threw on this silky textured knit (erm, STUNNING) that I'd wear with them now while there's still a chill in the air and it only confirmed their versatility—I loved the combination of two soft textures.

My Review: I couldn't resist trying my favourite suede shirt in this lighter buttery yellow colour as well. Yes, as you can see it was just as gorgeous and possibly more spring-appropriate than the richer tan brown colour. I loved this colour paired with the off-white twisted seam jeans, which I'm wearing here in the longer 32 length with a heeled boot. A special mention for the ribbed tank top that I layered under the shirt here. It's not super thick so I'd prefer to wear it with a bra I think, but it felt like really good quality and it's a piece I know I rely on day in day out through summer so I'm happy to invest a bit more.

My Review: Accessories are something Toteme has only recently added into its repertoire, but, boy, am I glad they did (a statement I'm not sure my bank account would agree with). The T-Lock is, of course, the most popular style from the brand, and I'm really enjoying all the different versions there are of this modern It bag. Large and small, woven, suede, leather, croc or canvas—there's even a shearling version. I road tested the small espresso brown suede T-Lock clutch here, which I was surprised to find comes with a crossbody strap that also doubles up to create this cute shorter shoulder strap. Clutches aren't really my thing for practicality reasons, but this I can get on board with. This would be my dream year-round evening bag methinks.

I also adored the new suede day tote which is the bigger style pictured here. It would make a perfect elegant work bag, with plenty of room in the structured main compartment for an average sized laptop and all the rest of it. It's also got a zip all around the top, something not a lot of suede totes have at the moment, which will keep your belongings safe, especially in London.

And last but certainly not least, a special shoutout to these suede red flats which I saw on my way out of the store (yes, I gasped) and are now living in my mind rent free. Need, want, adore. The perfect accent accessory to complement a neutral wardrobe in spring. Of course, they're completely sold out on Toteme's website but it looks like Net-A-Porter has just had a fresh restock. If my wardrobe could talk, it would tell me that the thick coats and chunky knits that dominate its hangers are starting to take their toll. My Review: My ultimate goal for this try-on? Find the perfect easy-breezy dress, and this chocolate-hued number secured the top spot before anything else even had a chance. Crafted from heavyweight linen, it strikes the ideal balance: light enough to keep me cool on scorching days as we move into summer but substantial enough to drape beautifully and maintain a refined, luxurious finish.

In a deep brown shade, it feels like a seamless transition into the warmer months—more effortless than a bright colour yet just as seasonally appropriate. But what truly won me over was the silhouette. Billowy but structured, it delivers a chic, voluminous shape without overwhelming my frame. The wide cut means it moves beautifully as I walk, creating the perfect amount of swish with every step. And with the all-important addition of pockets, what more could I ask for?

Falling just above my ankles, it’s a true maxi on me. If you’re on the shorter side, you might consider hemming it, whilst taller people may find it closer to a midi length. For styling, I loved it with simple black flats and a small clutch bag, but I can see it working just as easily for an evening look with a strappy sandal, or even paired with a suede boot as we move through early spring’s chillier weeks.

2. Trench Coat + Jeans + Suede Trainers

My Review: When I think of COS, I think of the wardrobe basics I rely on every day, so, naturally, I couldn’t resist trying on a few everyday-worthy pieces that caught my eye in-store. First up, the high-waisted jeans that stopped me in my tracks. With a straight-leg cut, rib-grazing rise, soft, light-blue wash and thick denim composition, they feel every bit as premium as some of the designer pairs in my collection. Sizing-wise, I went for a 27, which fit comfortably, offering a little extra room around the waist, which I always prefer with high-waisted jeans. If you feel the same, I'd recommend sticking to your normal size, but if you prefer a neater fit, consider sizing down.

Next, the perfect white tee. Whilst I’ve long been a fan of COS’s Clean Cut T-shirt, I had yet to try their long-sleeved styles. This one has a slightly sheer finish, which I didn’t mind; it was beautifully soft and ideal for layering under a jumper—exactly what I look for in a tee like this. Then came the trench coat. COS always delivers on classic outerwear, but the piece that stood out most was this short car coat-style trench in a soft green hue. Fastening neatly down the middle, it had a roomy yet structured fit which you could comfortably layer over a knit without feeling bulky.

Finally, I completed the look with the trainers I’ve been eyeing for weeks. I love them in white suede and leather, but with three other equally chic colour options, it’s hard to go wrong. No matter the choice, they’re the kind of effortless shoe that ties an outfit together with ease.

My Review: I'll admit that I hesitated to embrace the waistcoat trend. A few seasons ago, it felt like it was everywhere—perhaps a little too ubiquitous. So, I admired from the sidelines, resisting the urge to join in. But now? My resolve is wearing thin. After lingering on the periphery of my wardrobe considerations for so long, waistcoats no longer feel like a fleeting trend but a bonafide staple.

With a tall collar that grazes the neck, elegantly concealing the clavicle, this particular style stood out from the rest. Its neutral shade and single-button fastening give it a refined simplicity—more sophisticated than many I’d seen before. Paired with sleek black trousers (which just might be the chicest and most comfortable I’ve ever tried), the result was a simple yet super-polished look that (if I do say so myself) is undeniably stylish.

4. Minidress + Leather Accessories

My Review: In my quest to introduce more colour into my wardrobe, I was instantly drawn to the "glass slipper" blue of this interesting shirt dress. At first glance, it appears to be two separate pieces, but in reality, the dress and shirt are cleverly stitched together at the shoulders. Whilst this ensures an effortlessly put-together look every time, it does mean you’re committed to the extra layer—something to consider on hotter days.

That said, I couldn’t resist the elegant cut, length and thoughtful design. The mid-thigh hemline falls perfectly on my tall frame, making it an ideal minidress for me (often, they can look a little too short for my liking). For a refined finish, I styled it with COS’s Tome bag and court shoes, which I also wore in the previous look, but I can just as easily imagine it paired with a roomy tote and classic ballet flats for a more laid-back feel.

It was a tough job, but someone had to try on all of the chic things at Massimo Dutti. I was tasked with giving Zara's "older" sister's spring collection a spin for The Great Try-On, and this more luxurious high-street destination did not disappoint. I say "older" because it's a little more grown-up. I've been a Massimo Dutti fan for some time now, and over the years I have collected a few pieces that have stood the test of time.

In my wardrobe resides a pleated taupe wrap skirt, a crinkly white blouse, various pairs of shoes, a linen midi, multiple leather belts and probably some other things I have rudely missed off the list because my wardrobe is chaos. In essence, the last thing I need is new clothes, which means I can be extra fussy when contemplating the latest pieces to land in-store.

The Spanish brand is known for its upscale tailoring, leather and suede and overall more bohemian feel than younger, trend-driven Zara. It's more for the busy, sophisticated woman who relishes the finer things in life and thinks about her investment pieces. As such, you'll find that the items are more timeless in design and considered in their manufacturing—meaning they're more likely to stick around in your collection for years to come. Right now, the brand is strong in all of the above categories for spring, but I would add that the bags, jackets, boho skirts and floaty blouses are definitely the current areas of specialism.

For context, I am 5'1'' and a size 12 (give or take). Most pieces were true to size, but—as I often find—the trousers and jeans can be snug on the thighs (I have a chunkier leg versus a smaller waist). It would be remiss of me not to note that it's a shame there aren't more items in the store (or online) above a size 14. I'm convinced that the Massimo aesthetic spans many personal styles and shopping needs, so, somebody somewhere who makes these decisions: listen up!

1. Suede Jacket + Crinkly Separates + Suede Bag

My Review: As soon as I saw this chocolate-brown suede jacket with its contrast leather collar, I knew I had to try it on. This, along with the matchy suede tote bag (it's giving Margaux), were the standout pieces here, and they could be worn with many different outfits, from whimsical off-white layers like this to tailored trousers or denim.

The jacket fits generously, so you could size down if you weren't planning to wear it over knits and wanted a more fitted silhouette. As you can see, the sleeves are long on my shorter arms, but this is a standard thing I have to adjust to as a petite woman, and I often tuck the hems back upon themselves or get things altered.

Massimo's current selection features a lot of gauzy, lightweight fabrics in earthy, natural colours, as you can see in the skirt and top here. They may feel a little summery to try out now, but they'll be a safe investment for the summer period, and because they aren't particularly trend-driven, they have the longevity to last out multiple heatwaves. The colour palette that runs throughout the offering means you can easily mix and match pieces like I've done here, using a crinkled cardigan to break up the cream-on-cream by knotting it at my waist. The cute little ruched tee is a revelation for someone who doesn't enjoy buying basics, and I'd like it in all colours, please!

The suede of both the bag and the jacket is lush and deep in colour, and I think brown is arguably a better year-round choice than black. The bag is big and would house your laptop and all other essentials easily, with sturdy straps and a structured finish. It makes for a solid work option as well as a great travel bag.

2. Draped Cardigan + Braided Bag

My Review: Anything with a scarf detail and I'm already sold, so this draped linen-blend cardigan with a swooping shawl to elegantly throw over the neck instantly appealed to me. Add this chic mole colour (which goes with everything), and you have a knit that you can wear into the summer months. I will say that it's very fine though, so you'd want to think about your underwear or layers carefully for the chicest effect. This goes for a lot of Massimo's current collection—the fabrics are beautiful but many are quite see-through.

I employed some simple black tailored trousers as the base for this cardigan, but I think it would work even better with an A-line skirt, barrel-leg jeans or wide-leg trousers. You can style the drapery to be as full-coverage across the front as you want or keep the action more as a pashmina-style scarf across your neck. I would also try using a brooch to mix things up and keep the scarf in place for a day at the office.

Along with the cardigan came another great find: this braided shoulder bag. A true classic and infinitely versatile, this luxurious little leather style won me over with its simplicity and refined finish. You can carry it as a clutch in more formal moments or sling it on for day-to-day usage.

3. Suede Jacket

My Review: Okay, confession time! I was on my way out of the store in Battersea Power Station (which, by the way, is so nice and peaceful), and I spotted this tan suede jacket flat on a table. How had I missed it when I did my initial swoop of the building?! Ignore the rest of the outfit as those are my own pieces from other brands, and let's zone in on this perfect little suede creation. Firstly, the suede feels like heaven. The colour is beyond expensive-looking, and I adore the slightly worn-in finish, which is something I spotted a lot on the autumn/winter 2025 runways, especially at my go-to brand for inspiration: Prada.

The size 12 is perfect for a slightly oversized cut, and I could still layer a knit underneath on colder mornings. I would wear this gem of a jacket with everything from this pleated skirt outfit to breezy summer dresses or with leopard-print jeans on the weekend. It was my number-one pick of the entire try-on. I have no negatives, and I think it needs to come home with me.

4. Mulberry Dress + Aviators + Suede Bag

My Review: As soon as I saw the colour of this dress, I fell in love. Like a spring/summer progression of last season's omnipresent burgundy, this softer, lighter mulberry hue is incredibly elevated and a nice alternative to the more obvious shades we tend to see during this season. Rendered in a linen fabric with a slight stretch, there's something about the ruched waist, exaggerated sleeves and A-line skirt that feels a little Victoria Beckham-coded. As such, it made sense to go full VB and add a giant bag, aviators and some attitude.

The fit of the dress is great and could definitely mould and shape to suit other body shapes—for me, there was enough room in the bust and hips to skim but not cling, whilst the gathered waist nipped in at my smallest part. The fabric is cool and comfy, so this could easily become a great office piece in the summer months that you could also roll up and take on holiday to wear with flats.

Before I'd even stepped foot in the store, I had a list of pieces I was desperate to try on, recommended by friends and spotted on fashion people consistently, as well as a plethora of new-in styles I wanted to see up close.

My Review: Putting together three spring-ready outfits with a French edge was a total breeze. Sézane has a distinct way of bringing together staple silhouettes with a touch of French influence that makes them supremely elegant, put-together and easy to style. Naturally, this includes a spring-shower-ready trench coat, smart tailored trousers and elegant heels. Spring is prime time to pull out our favourite skirts, and given that my skirt collection is lacking, I knew that a languid maxi with a French lace finish would upgrade my looks perfectly.

To really play with textures, the brand's iconic Will Jacket in sumptuous suede is the ideal outer layer, accented by a simple basket bag that will be a trusted companion throughout the warmer months. Alongside, there's a selection of accessories to complete these elegant and easy-to-wear looks for office days, coffee dates, spring picnics and plenty of other occasions. For reference, I tend to wear an 8 (EU 36/small) on top and 10 (EU 38/medium) on the bottom.

1. Trench Coat + Lace-Detail Shirt + Pinstripe Trousers + Heeled Mary Janes + Crossbody Bag

My Review: The first item I picked up was the Clyde Trench Coat. Years after its release, this trench remains a timeless staple for the milder months, ready to become a wardrobe hero when spring rolls around (and knowing the British weather, destined to be worn on repeat until the end of autumn). It certainly didn't disappoint. I chose a size 10, my usual choice in outerwear, and the fit was spot on. Whilst Sézane hones in on the classic design of a trench, the finer details are what makes this coat constantly sell out. The placement of the shoulder seams gives a relaxed feel rather than a structured silhouette, adding to the ease of the piece, whilst a checked lining gives a playful nod to the brand's French heritage.

A delicate guipure lace shirt was next to call my name, intricately woven to bring a contrasting texture to a classic button-down design, and whilst it has no lining, the placement means you can wear this with a nude bra and still feel put-together. A sharp tailored trouser is one of my most reliable staples, and when building a new-season wardrobe, sticking to designs that you already feel your best in will ensure you make the most of them. Here, navy pinstripes complement the white of the shirt and the beige of the trench, introducing a nice contrast between the smooth cotton, textured lace and patterned stripes. Both the shirt and trousers fit true to size.

To finish, it had to be a Mary Jane. Bringing a polished finish, a little bit of height and a surprising amount of comfort, these are like a classic yet on-trend finishing touch to complete the French-inspired look. Here, I also took my regular shoe size. This is the kind of look I'd wear when heading to the office or on a shopping trip. Both demand I have a coffee in hand, so a hands-free crossbody bag made from smooth leather and roomy enough for my essentials is the perfect choice. Better still, the strap can be tucked away so the bag can be cradled in your hand or tucked under the arm, as I have above.

2. Suede Jacket + White Tee + Lace Skirt + Basket Bag

My Review: The Will Jacket is a piece I've not only spotted on stylish people but which comes editor-recommended, too. It's my idea of a dream spring jacket, with spacious patch pockets that accent either side of the shirt-like design and a line of buttons should you want to wear it buttoned-up. The classic tan colourway was definitely a contender, but as my preferred size (small) wasn't available, I went for this gorgeous olive green.

Truthfully, I'm not much of a skirt person. I'd never found a style that I felt truly comfortable in, but the intricate guipure lace on this one immediately drew me in. The silhouette is a standout: a languid maxi style with unexpected soft pleats in a fresh white shade that convinced me it was time to embrace this elegant wardrobe addition. Whilst heavily detailed, it doesn't feel too heavy, and I can already picture so many outfits that will include this skirt through spring and summer. Plus, I can pair it with the beautiful matching shirt from my first look, adding mules for an elegant garden-party look. Here, I took my regular size 10, and at 5'2", the length was ankle-skimming when worn high-waisted.

I can picture this outfit with easy sandals when warm days are fully underway, but for a bit of colour play, I tried on these butter-yellow shoes. Taking inspiration from stylish French women, I added a miniature basket bag to complete the look. This one comes with longer straps to wear over the shoulder or crossbody, but I also love the look of it toted in hand.

3. Cardigan + Wide-Leg Jeans + Burgundy Bag + "Glove" Ballerinas

My Review: As someone who wears jeans more than anything else, I had to put Sézane's denim to the test. It's a fabric that excels in the spring months, and this pair is crafted from 99% organic cotton with 1% elastane for a touch of stretch. The high-rise waist sat comfortably as I took my regular size (28) with a wide-leg silhouette that will be so wearable with the rest of my wardrobe. At 5'2", most jeans I try come up long, and those taller than me will appreciate the extra length that can easily be removed for us petite people with a quick trip to a local dry cleaner.

Here, I've paired the jeans with the brand's beloved Gaspard cardigan, a cosy knit with a striking scoop neckline that can be worn as a regular cardi or turned around with the buttons at the back for a soft knitted top. The silhouette is relaxed, and for the look I wanted, I sized down to an XS for a slightly more fitted feel. At first touch, I thought it might feel itchy when on, but the mix of super kid mohair, baby alpaca and polyamide come together to form a supremely soft knit.

When I can't decide what to wear, I rely on jeans and a cardigan, and the pairing is sure to feel considered with a smattering of accessories. The Taylor Belt ties in all the brown tones, and I love that the brand offers its belts in different sizes to ensure the best fit. For an on-trend touch, I chose the python-print Matilda Ballerinas, pairing a trending print with a classic French-girl shoe.

Finally, this bag deserves a moment. Crafted from refined cowhide leather, it brings a refined finishing touch to this pared-back look. The glossy burgundy shade is even better in person, like a rich merlot. The strap is adjustable depending on how you want to wear it, and it has plenty of space without feeling oversized. The arrival of a new season always brings a mix of excitement and mild wardrobe-related panic. Just when I’ve settled into dressing for one type of weather, the forecast shifts and, suddenly, I find myself back at factory settings unsure what I want my style to look like. Right now, I’m feeling that shift with spring 2025. I love spring, always have. The lighter evenings, the prospect of outdoor brunches without the need for five layers, having enough energy to get out of bed in the morning. However, when it comes to my wardrobe, this particular spring has thrown me.

Over the years, I’ve gradually moved towards a more considered approach to shopping. I no longer impulse-buy trend-led pieces, instead opting for items I know I’ll get plenty of wear out of. That being said, my spring wardrobe is looking a little sparse. A few linen shirts, a couple of dresses, and a pair of sandals that have seen better days—it’s clear I need to invest in a few key pieces to carry me through the season. And I know just where to turn: Zara.

Zara has long been a staple in my wardrobe. It’s one of the few high street stores that consistently delivers trend-driven pieces alongside timeless staples, though I’ll admit I shop there differently now than I did in my early twenties. I no longer feel the urge to take home something from every visit, but that’s not to say I don’t appreciate the gems Zara has to offer. I just choose more carefully. So, I thought I'd head on in to my local store to see what the new collection looks like up close and decide if there's anything worth taking home with me.

Walking into the store, I was immediately drawn in. Zara has a clear focus on soft tailoring this season—relaxed blazers, wide-leg trousers, and crisp cotton shirts in neutral tones populated the shop floor, all of which felt fresh yet wearable. Of course, Zara wouldn’t be Zara without a few bold statement pieces and this season’s take included sheer textures, vibrant prints, and dramatic silhouettes. It was a mix of understated elegance and some more playful pieces which, in many ways, is what the brand does best.

Although I've just described myself as a discerning shopper, after one lap I had an armful of items that had piqued my interest, so I made my way to the fitting room. This is where the real test begins. How do these pieces actually translate on me, a 5’3” hourglass-size-12 woman who prefers effortlessness over fuss? Zara's known for its unpredictable sizing—something I am certainly not immune to—so it's anyone's guess what would actually work for me. There were standouts, and there were surprises—both good and bad. Some pieces instantly felt like staples I could wear on repeat, while others, though undeniably beautiful, just didn’t sit right on my frame. I left with two items I simply couldn’t resist (more on those later), but there were plenty of other pieces I’d recommend, too.

1. Suede Jacket + White Jeans + Loafers

My Review: Like so many other people, I've been contemplating investing in a suede jacket for months, but never quite finding the right style for me. I love blazers, but I wanted a jacket that worked with all of my outfits—jeans, dresses, skirts, the lot. And sometimes a blazer just doesn't quite cut it.

Before I headed in store, I had a quick browse on Zara.com to see if anything piqued my interest. Of course, there are no guarantees that the items I like online will still be in store, but it always helps to have an idea of things to look out for. As soon as I spotted this jacket, I knew I was on to a good thing. Even digitally the suede looked very high quality, and I enjoyed how the barn jacket silhouette had been translated into a premium material.

You can imagine my shock, then, when I came across a full rail of them in the corner of the store. Not only were they discretely merchandised, but there was full stock. Something that never seems to be in Zara stores. I picked up a medium, threw it on with what I was wearing and it just worked.

It's weighty, flanked with robust hardware and has a very elevated feel to it. It's lined well and hangs just so from the body. Featuring a roomy cut (I'm wearing a medium here), it'll work with layers underneath but I also know it'll look the chic part thrown over a tee with blue jeans or perhaps a cotton skirt when temperatures rise. Full disclosure, I didn't buy anything after my try on, as I'm on a spending hiatus until the end of the month, but I'm really hoping this is still available when I de-freeze my bank account.

2. Cotton Shirt + Woven Bag + Linen Trousers

My Review: Spring to me means one thing: reintroducing linen into my wardrobe. I have plenty of linen skirts and dresses to choose from in my existing ranks but one thing I've never found is the perfect pair of linen trousers. I often find them to be a little shapeless, so have defaulted to weightier fabrics that achieve that structure. However, when I was perusing Zara's front-of-store rails (where much of the chicest pieces live) I stumbled across this pair of wide-leg, pleated waist linen trousers, which, upon first look, checked the boxes that had previously remained unchecked.

Perennially unsure about Zara's sizing, especially when it comes to trousers, I grabbed both a medium and a large and headed to the changing room. Along the way, I grabbed a blue cotton poplin shirt and a beautiful braided bag I'd also spotted online that morning.

Trying the trio on, it was immediately love at first sight. I'm wearing the medium trousers here—thanks to their ultra-wide shape they skim my thighs (the area that Zara trousers don't usually fit me) with ease, while the nipped-in waistline created a chic, tailored silhouette. You can't see them under these hems, but I'm wearing high heels underneath these trousers, so they are long, but that isn't anything a trip to the tailor and £15 can't sort.

The trousers are a warmer white than they look on the website, which I think made the blue hue look all the more expensive, too. Finished with this stunning, deep burgundy bag (so deep it almost looks warm brown), this is a look I'd gladly wear every day throughout the season. Zara, you're definitely in my good books after this one.

3. Satin Shirt + Slip Skirt + Heeled Clogs

My Review: Although I wear jeans a lot out of convenience, and I've tried to bolster my trouser rotation in the last year, I've always been more of a skirt person. That said, there's one style I've never really warmed to and that's the denim skirt.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the appeal. They work with anything you would ordinarily pair jeans with, making them arguably one of the most versatile skirts you can invest in. Perhaps it's just the styles I've tried but I've always found them a bit bulky and uncomfortable to wear for longer periods of time. So, I've generally avoided them, instead opting for full cotton skirts or satin slips.

While I was browsing in store, I came across this blue skirt which has the look of denim but the weight and feel of a slip. I usually don't like fabric imitations, as they can often look cheap, but the weave of this skirt made it much more elevated than any sort of denim "print".

Taking it to the changing room, I picked up this silky shirt along the way, not thinking much of it. However, it was the perfect top to layer into such a delicate skirt—I didn't see any unsightly bulges of fabric coming through the skirt when I tucked it in.

The skirt I'm wearing here is a medium, though I would have just as easily opted for the large for a looser fit. That said, I still liked the way this draped on my body, skimming over my legs in a way that was elegant. The little belt detail was a nice touch too, tapping into the overarching skinny belt trend we've seen so far this year.

Finishing with a pair of wooden-heeled clogs for a Chloé-esque finish, I was taken with every part of this look. Again, it's the sort of thing I'd wear on repeat, which I think is a testament in itself.

4. Embroidered Blouse + Suede Tote + White Jeans

My Review: To me, there's nothing that feels more springlike than a white blouse,. Whether it's trimmed with lace or ruffles, embroidered or plain, they have the power to make any basic bottoms look more elevated and sophisticated, and you feel like you've put more effort into your outfit when, really, it's taken the same amount of time to select as your most reliable T-shirt.

Immediately drawn to this style when I saw it, I loved how authentic it felt. The combination of the intricate lace, full sleeves and micro pleating gives it a vintage feel—if you told me you thrifted it at a French flea market, I'd probably believe you.

I tried it on with my own cream jeans and instantly wanted to take it home with me. The full silhouette means it looks best untucked, which I embraced—as a millennial we're known to enjoy tucking in our tops to our waistbands, but doing so compromised its great shape.

Wearing it with a suede tote, I just know I'd get so much wear out of a blouse like this this spring. If I didn't already own a couple of (okay, a few!) similar styles, I would have been very tempted to take this home with me, spending pause or not. However, in a further testament to its chicness, our managing editor, Poppy Nash, has already invested in it and told me she is smitten.

It feels cliché to say it, but the beginning of a season is always such an exciting time, and perhaps none are as exciting to welcome as spring. Even those who truly love winter will surely agree that the feeling of bidding adieu to short, grey days and countless layers to say hello to blue skies and bare legs is the best. Naturally, working as a fashion editor, there's also a sense of anticipation of a new wardrobe—not necessarily buying brand new pieces, but adding a few fresh additions and even re-wearing old favourites that haven't seen the light of day for six months.

I've been perfecting my personal style and capsule wardrobe for over a decade, and I think I've got to a point where I really know who I am, fashion-wise. I'm a person, who relies on staples but also invests in more statement pieces. I can never keep a white T-shirt white, so why spend a lot on it? But a leather jacket I can keep forever that will stand the test of time? I'm sold. I'm also, admittedly, quite partial to trends, so whilst many of my Who What Wear UK colleagues really do stick to their capsule collections of timeless hero pieces, I'm perhaps a little more tempted by something with a directional cut or a hyped accessory.

That being said, as much as I love luxury labels and cult designers, I'm sadly not made of money. So, there are a few high-street brands I rely on for fashion-forward ensembles, statement shoes and elevated staples. Mango is one of them. If you've been a Who What Wear UK reader for longer than the time it's taken you to read this intro paragraph, you'll know how much I stan Mango. Between its collaborations (which include Siedrés, SIMONMILLER and Victoria Beckham, FYI), premium range The Selection and balance of classic and cool designs that really can look so much more expensive than they are, I've been a loyal ambassador of the brand for several years.

So, for this season's The Great Try-On, there was no question of which brand I'd be taking. I did a big order of pieces that will see me through this transitional period into summer: think light knits, linen and leather, as well as some versatile tailoring. 1. Linen Trousers + Leather Jacket + Statement Accessories

My Review: Full disclosure: I'm automatically biased when it comes to Mango jackets—I have quite a few in my roster now. Every time I wear one of them, I'm complimented, and who doesn't love that? So, the pièce de résistance here is definitely this leather jacket. I love the patchwork effect, funnel neck and double zip. Funnel necks are going to be huge this season—just know you heard it here first! As we tend to opt for lighter tones in spring, I've paired it with cream linen cargo pants (a cooler take on traditional linen trousers) and a cream short-sleeved crochet knit. I think the accessories are what make this look though, particularly the zebra-print bag (didn't you hear? Zebra is the new leopard). I finished it off with gold jewellery and mint-green sandals.

2. MIDI SKIRT + BARN JACKET + BALLET FLATS

My Review: ICYMI, barn jackets are huge right now. I, for one, am very happy that practical outerwear is having a moment, because I'm a person who doesn't often change between activities—you're likely to see me in the same outfit I wear to walk my dog as you are on my next zoom call. This means my casual and professional wardrobes intertwine quite heavily.

Denim is an essential for so many of us, but in spring, I switch my jeans for skirts and shorts. It's been quite widely discussed in the office lately that skirts have really replaced dresses in the last year or so. Be it mini, midi or even maxi lengths, we've witnessed a change in preference from a one-piece to separates, and my guess is that it's because of the versatility skirts can offer. Case in point: this denim kilt can be worn like I have here—with a juxtaposing casual jacket, cutesy shoes, socks and an embroidered handbag—as much as it could be worn with slingback kitten heels and a blazer. This weekend, I'm going to make it very Miu Miu-inspired and wear it with a pale blue shirt, lace tights and mules. Cute, right?

3. THREE-PIECE SUIT + STATEMENT ACCESSORIES + HEELS

My Review: In my humble opinion, a suit is a staple. It's definitely no longer just for the office, but an ensemble you can wear for weddings, dinners or even casually. Here, I wanted to show a three-piece suit for a black-tie occasion. I know many of us choose pastels for spring events, but I have quite a colourless wardrobe and live in black at least 50% of the time. Before you tell me I can't wear black to a wedding, I did in fact ask my guests to wear black to my own ceremony last year, and I've noticed others do the same.

As this look is for the warmer months, I've gone for a heeled sandal and added this waistcoat in case I needed to remove the blazer. The shiny discs on the shoes remind me of a disco ball, so they'd be perfect for transitioning suiting into a party vibe. Equally, the feathered clutch and satin rosette hair tie are chic and easy little accessories that can be used to jazz up a look year round. The belt, however, is a great example of how an affordable trend piece can make a classic look feel cool. Its floral detailing and chain design screams Y2K—wear it low-slung on the waist with trousers or jeans, or use it to cinch in your waist when wearing a dress.

4. TAILORED TROUSERS + CROPPED ZIP-UP + MULES

My Review: If you love sportswear and tailoring, this two-piece will have you in as much of a chokehold as it does me. This is basically a suit with an edge—it feels a bit athleisure, a bit '80s and therefore slightly more casual than a classic two-piece. I love the half-zip detail on the top; this is another example of the funnel neck coming through in this season's trends, but this way, it can be unzipped to show what's underneath. I think a more pared-back way of styling this would be with a tote and ballet flats or a flat, strappy sandal.

Sure, you could put it with trainers, but I think they'd make it feel too '80s—a bit costume and retro. This is my kind of professional look or "corporatecore" (known as just "corpcore" on TikTok); the kind of look that can easily be worn for a dinner after work. And let's talk about the accessories. This bag with the purse detail on the front? Perfect for day-to-night, as are the kitten-heels with their cute bow detail on the top.

Every year around this time, I start itching to invest in my autumn capsule wardrobe. I manage to resist when everyone is looking to purchase jackets in August, sniggering as I sip my Aperol Spritz in my teeny-tiny sports shorts and sandals. I then avoid temptation again with coats in September, telling myself the very notion of the cold is nothing but a figment of the distant future. And then, out of nowhere, October's lower temperatures come and I feel under-prepared, and frankly, f***ing freezing. Thankfully however, no matter how underprepared I am for the cold, a new season, a last minute holiday or a party I forgot I agreed I'd go to, Mango is always there to zhuzh up my wardrobe.

In case you hadn't already noticed, Mango's offering in the last 6 to 12 months has gone up a serious notch. Ever since I discovered its premium collection, The Selection, I swear I've never really looked back. And whilst of course I'm privy to many brands on the high street, no brand manages to conquer expensive-looking style quite like Mango has for autumn/winter 24. Does it have premium materials like leather and cashmere? Erm, yes it does! What about timeless staples like denim and vest tops? You bet. As well as the more trend-led items? Oh, in abundance. The difference is that Mango's pieces, when styled correctly, don't actually look as affordable as they truly are.

Take for example this cream fringe coat, a particularly show-stopping piece in the order that I made and tried on at home this week. I wore it to work the following day and I cannot tell you how many compliments I received. Actually I can, it was 6. From complete strangers, no less! Whenever I told them that it was from Mango, not a more luxury brand like Toteme, the only reaction I receive was pure surprise. And whilst £230 is no small change, it's items like this, that are timeless in their colour and silhouette, but with added details like its detachable scarf and fringe hem, that make it feel special, and frankly, more expensive.

But this coat isn't the only item I loved. Fortunately for my wardrobe (and perhaps unfortunately for my bank balance), there were multiple items I decided to keep. Here are the 3 very chic, very stylish looks I loved most.

Shop the Best Pieces From My Mango Autumn 2024 Try-On

Style notes: Obviously this fringe coat is the pièce de résistance here. Part of Mango's Western edit, where cow print leather, fringe jackets and denim feature, unsurprisingly, quite heavily. Once you have got the hang of how to style the scarf (I think it's easiest to detach it from the coat and just throw it over one shoulder, personally), this coat looks phenomenal. It's a very bright cream, so really should probably be kept for more occasional than everyday wear, unless you're very good at keeping things clean, or have an excellent dry cleaner on speed dial. It's also not lined, so there's room for cosy knits to be styled below without making you feel too hot.

Also worth mentioning is this drop-waist dress below. ICYMI: be it with denim, dresses or cargo pants, waistlines are getting increasingly lower, and although I didn't love these the first time round in the early 2000s, now I'm quite open to them. This dress in particularly tackles it quite well. With the cotton bottom and stretchy knit on the top half, it's super comfortable. What's more, it's easily styled multiple ways. Whilst I have it with boots and have added a belt here for a smart-casual vibe, I think it would work really well with mules, slicked back hair and heavier makeup for a more evening look. Very good, Mango—I'm impressed.

SHOP THE LOOK:

Style Notes: Let's start with these shoes. As a fashion editor, I try on lots (and lots) of new pieces of clothing, shoes and accessories for work, and these mules are probably my favourite item I've tried on this year. Cow print is a huge hit trend this season, seen across bags, jackets and belts, but this iteration is transcendent to any other example I've seen so far. Whilst I try to avoid trends that can feel fleeting, there's something about this style and silhouette—the square toe and the glossy black heel—that makes them look so expensive. They're also just fun, and it's not easy for pieces to feel joyous without also being a bit novelty.

Another stand-out item from this outfit is the knit draped on my shoulder. Although cashmere can last up to a decade, I invest in a new piece every year or two. I think it's an invaluable purchase, nothing else feels quite like it. And, despite being someone more attracted to neutrals, I knew this autumn I'd be buying into the red trend. I can't get enough of it. Be it red shoes, my nails or in this case, a sweater, this cherry shade makes me feel so energised. I particularly love it with denim, and these mid-wash blue jeans, with the eyelets and straight cut are the perfect pair.

SHOP THE LOOK:

Style Notes: A decent leather jacket is an essential for any capsule wardrobe. So is a trench coat. A leather trench coat, however, feels somewhat more special than an 'essential,' and rather an investment piece. Admittedly, being £400, this particular one does have that investment piece price tag, which feels expensive for a high street brand. But I was interested to see how it compared to leather pieces I'd tried in the past from designer luxury brands, as well as other more wallet-friendly options. I have to say, the website's imagery almost doesn't do this coat justice. The leather is deliciously soft, the cut hugs at the waist just enough, and it finishes at the exact right point on your calf. What's more, it seems to go with anything and everything, elevating a fairly casual look into something quite evening-appropriate. It fulfils a tricky but significant equation for me, which is to balance both classic and cool. Not many items of clothing achieve this, but it does guarantee a multitude of wears. So, though £400 may sound a little expensive, it's a good match for many coats just like it that fetch 5 times that!

When it came to styling this coat, I wanted to put my own claim of suggesting it could lift a casual look into an evening one to the test, so I decided to style this with items that would typically be considered for daytime wear.

As the Y2K trend appears to be going nowhere any time soon, I've really tried to embrace it ways that don't make me feel like I'm in costume as my 12-year old self. Whilst I may not be wearing a tiered rah-rah skirt or putting butterfly clips in my hair any time soon, I have started to wear low-rise trousers and will often carry a petite shoulder bag that feels very 2002. These cargo pants, with their eyelet stud details, allude the exact right amount to the styles I loved twenty years ago, without making me feel silly. Even though I'm wearing a white tank top and these trousers, with a pointed kitten heel (again, very 2002) and this really fabulous trench coat, I can safely say this is a look I'd love to wear on a Friday night out. I would say that's mission accomplished, no?!

With the advent of autumn, I have again come to my annual realisation that I have nothing to wear. I thrive during the summer in light cotton dresses, but it's the autumn/winter season that I find the hardest to dress for. Now, I might be overreacting a little, as I definitely have enough to get me through the next few months, but when it's dark outside and I'm staring into my wardrobe with a background of drizzle and a cold breeze, I always get the urge to treat myself to some cosy knitwear, a new coat and a pair of sleek boots.

Although I'm largely content with what I own, there are a couple of gaps I can justify filling with a couple of key wardrobe staples; pieces I've probably over-worn now and are due a refresh. I managed to tick a few of these off with secondhand buys, and now it's time to take to the high street to get me over the finish line. Overwhelmed with options, I headed straight towards a reliable old favourite, walking right into Marks and Spencer. Having worn the brand's tights for school and bought my bras from there ever since my first fitting, M&S is still my first port of call when I'm looking to make a purchase. I find its collections almost always include the refined silhouettes I shop for most frequently—and often at very reasonable prices—and it's still nailing those fundamentals all these years later.

On the shop floor, I plucked a few key items that instantly caught my attention. Selecting a warm knit, a roomy coat, the perfect '90s-style leather jacket and a leopard-print blouse, I also grabbed some wearable denim, trending shoes and a couple of bags I couldn't resist giving a closer look. To the changing room! Size-wise, I tend to sit between a 10 and a 12, often opting for the former for my bottom half and the latter for tops and jackets. Style Notes: I have to confess that I'm a bit of a sceptic when it comes to faux leather. Perhaps because I spent so much of my teens in head-to-toe polyester, I'm now very reluctant to buy any "leather" item that isn't 100% genuine. As such, I was incredibly surprised to find myself falling in love with this faux-leather jacket. In a rich brown shade that falls somewhere between camel and chocolate, this slim-fitting jacket has a boxy cut and a neat finish that reminded me of the '90s-inspired styles I always look out for.

Cropping slightly above the hips, this jacket features a zip fastening and an elasticated hem that ensures a polished silhouette and some extra insulation. Wanting a comfortable, slightly oversized fit, I reached for a size 14, which was fitted enough not to appear too big, but large enough to wear over a knit—exactly the kind of layer I need for these in-between days. Suffice it to say, this sub-£60 jacket went straight onto my purchase pile.

With a slim fit up top, I wanted a little bit of volume on the bottom and tried on M&S' Wide Palazzo Leg Jeans and a pair of chunky Chelsea boots to ground my outfit. The jeans fit comfortably in a regular-length size 10. The great thing about M&S jeans is that they're available in short, regular and long lengths so you can get a much better fit.

Style Notes: As someone with broad shoulders, I often find a V-neck more flattering than a crew neck. Following that same formula, I generally gravitate more towards cardigans than jumpers, as I can wear it buttoned up all the way, or break up the shape by leaving the top button undone. Ever in need of more knitwear—I can imagine that everyone in the UK feels this way right now—I was keen to discover M&S' latest offering. After a loop around the store, I came straight back to the first style that caught my eye: this pretty argyle cardigan.

In a light yellow shade with grey and blue accents, this cosy layer spoke to the softer, brighter side of autumn/winter dressing. Adorned with gleaming gold buttons, the cardigan looks well beyond its £35 price tag, and the wool composition adds a snug touch. I tried it on with and without a layer underneath and found it was soft enough to wear without a base. I selected this cardigan in a size 12, which was perfectly roomy and very comfortable. I kept the rest of my outfit fairly neutral so as not to detract from the cardigan's colour and print, opting for jeans in a sculptural horseshoe cut and a pair of burgundy ballet flats.

I couldn't resist grabbing this expensive-looking suede bag to try with the outfit, and I found it paired perfectly with the cosy knit, earning it a place on my wish list.

Style Notes: I'm a firm believer that if you fall in love with a winter coat, you simply have to buy it. From November to April, a full-length coat is practically your entire outfit and thus needs to really encapsulate your style. Having spotted just the kind of coat I could easily see sitting in my wardrobe, this checked style made its way to the changing rooms with me. Initially struck by the grown-up print, I found the checked motif interesting but not too attention-grabbing—making it feel versatile and easy to style with a broad range of looks.

I'm entirely obsessed with trench coats, so I tend to shop for wool coats in a similar silhouette, and this delivered exactly the finish I was after. Wanting to ground the look with a chunky shoe, I reached for a pair of brown leather Chelsea boots and styled the coat with a simple tee and relaxed blue jeans, but it would also look great worn with tailored trousers or a black slip dress. The coat hit my mid-calf, which is a nice length on me, so if you're any shorter it might require hemming.

Style notes: Somehow, I seem to have evaded the leopard-print trend so far this season, but I was finally taken in this week by M&S' pretty leopard blouse. Looking for something I could weave into my daily wardrobe, this fun top stood out. With hook fastenings tracing down the centre, concealed by subtle bow detailing, the blouse—which I picked up in a 12—was easy to get on and off and could be worn fully buttoned or partially open.

I loved the puff-sleeve detailing and found this helped elevate the silhouette, whilst giving the design a playful edge. This is the kind of blouse that could be worked into so many looks, so I defaulted to a simple silhouette, styling it with classic blue jeans, red ballet flats and a studded bag. Ideal for milder autumn days, this lightweight blouse would sit well underneath a leather jacket or a black wool coat, but equally holds its own when worn by itself. I loved it with dark-wash, flared jeans and found it paired perfectly with the pop of red that the ballet flats offered.

As much as I've tried to hold on to that summer feeling, as October rolls in, I'm finally succumbing to autumn. The new season is here, and my linen pieces just won't cut it anymore, so it's time to face the fact that the cooler days have settled in for the foreseeable future. I've always held summer close as my favourite season, embracing the ease of dressing and warm sunshine until the very last moment, but I have to admit that the stellar offerings of the autumn/winter 2024 collections have me seriously reconsidering.

Colder temperatures, punctuated by quick blasts of sunshine and sudden rain, will soon be keeping us on our toes, but one thing is for sure: no matter the weather, there's a chance to look incredibly stylish this season. The brand has tapped into some of the coolest rising trends for the new season, but looking ahead, I'm firmly focused on timeless buys, and H&M has definitely come through.

A classic coat that will see me through the cooler months, a cosy knit for layering up as the chill settles in, a standout dress that needs minimal styling and a "nice top" to pair with not only my jeans but tailoring and skirts too—the key finds from my shopping trip cover every eventuality. Style Notes: When searching for new additions to my autumn wardrobe, I knew I had to start with a trench coat. Lightweight, ready to take on the swift changes in weather and easy to layer up when cooler moments set in, there's a reason why this coat is a classic. Whilst camel shades are most synonymous with the style, the trench is such a day-to-night hero that I was looking for a versatile black iteration, and H&M came through.

Made from a soft twill fabric, H&M taps into the classic nature of the style with a double-breasted silhouette, easy tie belt and longline silhouette. A great trench coat is one of those few pieces able to support just about any look, be it a sleek work outfit or layered over an elegant dress for the evening. When styling for my try-on, I went simple to tie in with my style, putting it over a simple top, straight-leg jeans and some striking buckle boots to ground the look.

I took my normal size small in the trench, which still had room for a cosy knit underneath. The best-selling Slim Straight High Ankle Jeans fit perfectly in a size 10 and, I took the boots in my usual size.

Style Notes: If anything had me excited for autumn this year, it was the predicted return of boho styles thanks to Chloé's revival of the aesthetic on in its A/W 24 collection. As hoped, flowing blouses and dresses in light, sheer fabrics have returned in a big way for the new season, and H&M has been serving up stunning boho dresses since August.

Featuring a very autumnal deep burgundy shade, long ties to add to the fluidity of the piece and subtle stud detailing for an extra touch of intricacy, this romantic H&M dress ticks all the boxes. The top section is slightly sheer whilst the double-lined skirt offers more opacity. I tried my regular size small. The dress is certainly striking, so I stuck to understated accessories to complete the look. First, I turned to a pair of reliable ankle boots with a thick heel, which fit true to size. With a smooth leather look and pointed-toe finish, I know these sleek boots will complete all kinds of outfits, including jeans, tailoring and skirts. Finally, I reached for this super-expensive-looking bag which is practical in size yet impossibly chic in design.
