Of all of the celebrities out there, there's only a small group that I frequently look to for styling inspiration. And, within that group there are two people that I seem to reference time and time again.

Neck-and-neck for 1st position in my own personal rank of "most-stylish celebrity" are Katie Holmes and Jennifer Lawrence. With fairly similar brand preferences—both have a known penchant for timeless pieces from designers such as The Row and Khaite—it's no surprise that I find myself drawn to the two in equal measure.

Showing just how similar their styles are, both actors recently stepped out wearing relaxed graphic tees and ultra-baggy jeans—proving that their fashion sense might be even more alike than I had initially thought.

Selecting a sleeveless graphic top with a bold floral print emblazoned across the front, Holmes styled an outfit seeped in Y2K qualities. Pairing her trending top with ultra-baggy jeans, a chain belt and a small cross-body bag, sghe crafted a look that felt both on-trend yet genuinely wearable in equal measure.

Also inspired by the growing graphic tee trend, Lawrence wore a similarly relaxed outfit for an off-duty day out. Swapping a chain belt for a sleek leather style, Lawrence chose to accessorise with a sage baseball cap and oval sunglasses in lieu of the cross-body bag à la Holmes.

As a fashion editor, I often get asked by friends and family for advice on where to buy specific items. Sometimes they’re the more trending styles, like the best place to find wardrobe staples, or where to start when investing in a designer handbag, but it might surprise you that most often it's the real basics that people are asked for. After all, they're the hardest-working pieces in our wardrobes, and therefore need to have the quality and style to be as useful as we require them to be. The question I'm asked most frequently is, “Where’s the best place to buy a classic white T-shirt?”. And I have the answer.

It will come as no surprise that this foundation piece is from COS. A reliable spot to turn to for classic styles with a designer look (but not the accompanying price tag), COS is a cornerstone of all our editors' wardrobes. Known for its brilliant tailored trousers and excellence in outerwear, COS really does it all. And the brand's clean-cut T-shirt is no exception.

As with each piece this high street brand offers, this classic tee stands out for its quality. I've tried the white version, but it's worth noting that this comes in a wide range of colours to suit all preferences. The weight is heavy enough not to show the outlines or seams of lingerie, and as you can see (or, more accurately, not see). The slightly cropped, boxy cut really drew me to this style; for T-shirts, I like a more relaxed fit in the body and sleeves, but at 5'2", I want the hem to still sit around my waistline. Whilst you can pick up a similar T-shirt for less, the quality and cut are the standout features that will ensure you rewear it all the time. And just think of how many outfits call for a simple white tee! With jeans, wide-leg tailored trousers, skirts, under dresses, the list goes on, and the cost-per-wear is too minute to calculate. In the fashion realm, cult pieces often find their origins in unexpected corners, though it's clear that there's still gas in the Y2K aesthetic which has borne yet another trend. Cue baby tees, which have been winning over the style set in recent weeks. But what exactly constitutes a baby tee? 

Essentially, baby tees are cropped T-shirts which are often tight-fitting (but not always).These pint-sized garments feature a shorter length, typically ending just above the waist, and are reminiscent of the tees that were commonplace in the early '00s—the sort worn by Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, often in tandem with low-rise jeans and skirts slung low on their hips. Back in the day, baby tees often showcased playful graphics, motifs, and vibrant colours, though 2023's take looks somewhat more refined than the crops that dominated my own wardrobe first time around. 

This week when I added a couple of cute cropped tees to my latest Zara order that I realised I'd been unwittingly influenced to do so. Be it on Instagram or TikTok, my eyes have been opened to the fact that baby tees are absolutely everywhere right now, and their presence is affecting the entire Who What Wear team. Upon sharing my observation on our group Slack channel, floods of messages poured in; "So that's why I suddenly want to buy one!", "I hear the Skims baby tee is really great", and "I've been trying to shrink an old T-shirt this week" were just some of exchanges we shared. 

Baby tees are still basics; wardrobe foundations that work with a significant amount of other clothing, so they're pretty well open to any styling interpretation you see fit. Lean even farther into the Y2K aesthetic by paring yours with cargo trousers (here's looking at you, Sofia Richie), or take the quiet luxury approach with some chic suiting and heels. Either way, summer's looking cropped, and I'm here for it.

It can get very hot, but it's also a big, busy city, and wearing what you might typically wear to, say, a pool party probably isn't going to be the most practical choice. Although it's completely true that there's nothing we love more than a full-blown Jennifer Lopez look (we're talking about her iconic Versace jungle dress and, more recently, her bridal minidress by Giambattista Valli), it would be wrong for us to discount the Hustlers star's more laid-back outfits. This season, my collection of basics is having a makeover and I'm cheating on my classic white tees with a certain revived T-shirt trend. Not so long ago I was always reaching for a plain white or black tee to form the foundation for all of my best outfits, but I've recently been charmed by the striking graphic T-shirts I'm spotting everywhere.

Punctuating an outfit with a playful touch, the graphic tee trend is growing this season. It's by no means new—some might even say these T-shirts have felt "dated" for a while—but this season's offerings feel entirely fresh; peppered with colour, bold statements and an undeniably cheeky edge.

I have never really been into logo or slogan T-shirts as an adult, but perhaps it's because I wore so many terrible ones as a teenager that I've been semi-scarred for the last 15 years. As always, something that looks so effortless rarely is.
