As a fashion journalist, I spend a lot of time thinking about trends—the fleeting ones that spark momentary obsession, the enduring ones that are permanent fixtures and the classic ones that resurface every few years.

The trend cycle moves at speed, and at times, it can feel relentless. When I catch myself getting swept up in its dizzying momentum, I like to pause and remind myself of the wardrobe heroes that have stood the test of time—pieces that remain relevant no matter what else is going on. The polka-dot dress is certainly one that has proven its longevity.

I could talk about polka-dot dresses anytime, but lately, they've been on my mind a little more than usual, and I can pinpoint that switch to the chic style that I spotted Sydney Sweeney wearing this week. Stepping out in a black, sleeveless, form-fitting polka-dot dress by Miu Miu that skimmed her knees—a length that happens to be one of the most in-demand for the season—Sweeney reminded me exactly why I'll always come back to this timeless printed dress.

Whilst I wouldn’t classify polka-dot dresses as a trend in the traditional sense, they're certainly having a moment right now. Peppering new-in sections this season, the classic pattern feels like it's coming up in a big way right now. I also spotted it crop up in so many designer collections this past fashion month, indicating that it's going to remain very relevant for autumn/winter 2025. I love a getting a fashion head start.

Polka-dot dresses also look inherently expensive. With very close connections to event dressing (we all know the polo scene from Pretty Woman) and a firm favourite of royalty (see Catherine, Princess of Wales and Princess Diana), polka dots will always be one of the richest-looking prints, not that you need to spend a fortune to get the look.

Interesting yet uncomplicated, the simple pattern adds texture and interest to an outfit without you having to worry about clashing or heaviness. Read on to find my favourite polka-dot dresses for spring and beyond at every price point.

For fear of overcomplicating my already packed morning routine and making myself late, I like to stick to a simple styling template to ease the morning time crunch.

Most recently, this formula has involved a chunky knit that can protect me from the chill, worn with wide-leg trousers and a puddle-proof pair of platform shoes. Now, there's a little wiggle room in this combination, and depending on the forecast—the jumper might be substituted for a boxy tee or a pretty cardigan—but I'm afraid there's no comprising on the trousers and shoes. Comfortable and easy to style, this two-piece look shields me against the UK weather whilst laying down a chic base that I can experiment with daily. And now, I've spotted two of my favourite celebrities embracing it too.

Stepping out for a walk in London, Daisy Edgar-Jones styled two pieces from British brand Me+Em: the Italian Flannel Wide-Leg Pant (£225) and the Shower-Proof Swing Mac (£495). To complete her outfit, the actor reached for Gucci's Horsesbit Wedge Loafer (£875), a GG Emblem bag (£1610) and looped a GG Marmont Thin Belt (£320) around her waist. Choosing a trench coat (a trusty piece Londoners reach for every spring), Edgar-Jones's low-key outfit leaned into timeless staples that helped her craft an outfit that felt uncomplicated and chic—exactly what I'm going for.

Across the pond, actor Sydney Sweeney stepped out in New York taking a similarly chic approach to her styling. Selecting high-waisted, wide-leg trousers in a light cream shade paired with brown platform boots, Sweeney's clever shoe choice stopped her long trousers from dragging on the ground whilst adding structure to her look. Whilst Edger-Jones went for platform loafers and Sweeney reached for an ankle boot, the styling sentiment remains the same—a platform shoe adds height and dimension to an outfit and makes wearing trousers that touch the floor much less of a risk in these typically wet months.

Style Notes: I've long looked to Sienna Miller for styling inspiration and I don't think this will change anytime soon. Stepping out in a beige Fair Isle knit, Sweeney channelled a cosy look with a polished edge. The intricate Fair Isle detailing that traced the neck of the knit was arranged in a colourful pattern and featured crystal embroidery throughout, making it elevated whilst comfortable and ideal for a chilly winter night.

With access to the latest runway designs and a revolving door of new-season options, it's rare to see celebrities opt for the same item as one another over and over again. But, punctuating the ever-changing world of celebrity shoe trends, I've spotted a particular shoe land in the wardrobes of several of my favourite celebrities this season.

In the past few weeks alone, I've noticed Kaia Gerber, Sydney Sweeney and Selena Gomez have all worn Jimmy Choo's Drop Heel shoe, thus cementing its newfound cult status.

Styled by Kaia Gerber for a recent film premiere, the model selected a pair of the brand's Drop Heels in white shade with a pointed-toe finish, which she wore to complement her white body-con dress alongside a spattering of jewels.

Featuring a distinctive detail that sees the heel of the shoe finish in an elegant teardrop design, this Jimmy Choo balances a fluid energy with a sturdy and sculptural finish. An unexpected addition that feels striking yet refined, the heel felt perfectly at home in Gerber's red carpet look.

Wearing hers with a boxy blazer, sheer knee-high socks and leopard print micro shorts, Sweeney's evening outfit was unexpected and playful and steeped in new-season trends. Adding height and poise to her evening look, Sweeney's simple white pumps injected a timeless elegance that provided an interesting contrast to the seasonal trends seen throughout.

Wearing hers with an all-black look, Gomez paired her black pair of pumps with semi-sheer tights, an oversized blazer and an LBD in a way I could easily see myself emulating for party season.

Whilst we might still be a few weeks away from the official start of autumn, actor Sydney Sweeney is embracing the season's trends early this year. Wearing summer's chicest shorts with the boots trend that I predict will be everywhere next month, Sweeney crafted an easy ensemble that's inspired my trans-seasonal wardrobe to no end.

Wearing her white shirt neatly tucked into matching white denim shorts, she nodded to a growing autumn trend by bypassing sandals or ballet flats, instead opting for knee-grazing brown leather boots to complete her casual look.

Whilst Sweeney might have jumped on the trend ahead of the rest of us (I am nowhere near ready to say goodbye to my open toes), I highly doubt it'll be long until we all own a pair. Appearing across countless A/W 24 runway shows in February, including Chloé's fan-favourite collection, brown boots are set to become the season's favourite footwear buy.

With a rich and warm undertone, brown boots style well with a wide range of autumnal shades, including forest green, burnt orange and rosy pink; and they're just as versatile as classic black. Before next season really takes hold, style the boots with light summer shorts à la Sweeney, or pair them with a flowing white dress. When temperatures dip, instill an autumnal feeling by adding tights or wearing them with blue denim.

Celebrities might have access to the very best dermatologists, expensive skincare and luxurious treatments (it takes a village to look red-carpet ready, after all), but you might be surprised to know that they actually have a few affordable skincare brands amongst their product arsenal. Yes, really. I'm talking under-£20 brands that you'll find dermatologists and makeup artists quick to recommend to their patients and clients, too.

One of those affordable brands that celebrities flock to is Avène. The brand is a French-pharmacy skincare staple that has long been a favourite of those with sensitive skin. As a beauty editor who experiences eczema and acne, I often have the brand's staple products on standby for flares, which were recommended to me by a number of dermatologists.
