I spent years looking for the perfect bikini. And once, as a tween, I found it. Somehow, on a family holiday, I left the bottom half on Prince Edward Island, never to be seen again. I can still picture it: a tiny coral floral print, perfectly cut. To this day, I regret not going back for it; I curse my parents for forcing me to abandon the lost bottom somewhere in those red sands at sunset. The itsy-bitsy teenie-weenies of my twenties still occupy a sentimental corner of my underwear drawer; a tangled nest of strings, bright colours and tiny triangles. They quietly keep each other company now, because these days, I’m a one-piece evangelist.

Why? For starters, it's simply less faff. You buy one size; the one that fits you. None of the endless mix-and-match sizing to accommodate your uniquely specific chest situation, which rarely bears any relation to your hips. No acrobatic strap adjustments. No underwires. No deciphering a web of criss-cross ties whilst your friends are already in the water. When I arrive at a lake, pool or beach, I’m usually desperate to dive straight in, so the last thing I want is to spend precious minutes negotiating my swimwear. The one-piece, by comparison, is blissfully uncomplicated.

It also stays put. There are few things less glamorous than emerging from a wave only to discover you’ve become the afternoon’s entertainment. A good one-piece allows you to swim properly; to dive under waves, race a friend to the buoy, launch yourself off a dock or paddle blissfully for hours, without once worrying that half of your swimwear is about to float off on its own. Which is fitting, really, for swimming is one of life’s greatest pleasures precisely because it exists between leisure and sport. It is at once deliciously languid and quietly athletic: equal parts relief, freedom and movement. A one-piece honours both sides of that equation. It lets you show off your style if you wish, but it also, crucially, lets you actually swim.

I've always associated the one-piece with a certain athletic glamour. I still think about Patrick Demarchelier’s A Swimmer’s Body editorial for Harper’s Bazaar in the late '90s, styled by Tonne Goodman, where the swimsuit felt less like beachwear than a uniform for an impossibly elegant athletic life. Here, sport met seduction in the most desirable way possible. Perhaps that’s why it also makes me think of my grandmother, queen of no-nonsense elegance. She appreciated a garment that was both practical and impossibly chic. I never saw her bathe in the lake in anything other than a simple black one-piece, cut just so to her figure, as she lowered herself in on the ladder before splashing backwards and declaring, "Isn’t it delicious!"

Plus, somehow—and I cannot explain this scientifically—I also think the one-piece suits my very short hair far better, particularly once it’s wet and slicked back after a swim. Another reason I’ve become such an evangelist is that it solves the perennial beach-day wardrobe dilemma. A one-piece isn’t just swimwear; it’s half an outfit already. Where a bikini often calls for a proper cover-up before lunch or cocktails (unless you’re in Rio de Janeiro, where I was delighted to discover women happily stroll around in bikini tops all day—and quite right too), a one-piece slips effortlessly into the rest of your wardrobe. I simply throw on a silky sarong, a pair of fisherman sandals, relaxed black trousers or white cotton shorts and I’m done. No outfit change required.

That’s because the best one-pieces don’t really behave like swimwear at all, but rather an excellent bodysuit. A minimalist black style disappears under linen trousers as elegantly as any tank top. A sporty racerback looks entirely at home with Bermuda shorts, trainers and socks on a day spent chasing children. A plunging halterneck becomes eveningwear with a silk skirt and gold jewellery. The swimsuit doesn’t dictate the mood; it simply adapts to it. Perhaps that’s why I think of a really good one-piece as an investment rather than a holiday purchase. It’s a swimsuit, yes, but it’s also a top, one that happens to survive salt water. Granted, gynaecologists would probably advise against spending an entire day in a wet swimsuit, and that’s why I pack two.

I counted recently and realised I own more than 30 one-pieces. Some are minimalist and architectural, others channel surfer-girl nostalgia in bold colours and a few feature plunging necklines worthy of a Slim Aarons poolside photograph. I love every one of them, and after every swim I dutifully rinse them in fresh water and lay them flat to dry, hoping to extend their lives for another season. Fortunately, many of my favourite swimwear labels reissue their signature one-pieces year after year. The classics, it seems, endure.

My favourites include Matteau, Lido, Lido X Soeur, Banana Moon, Talia Collins and, of course, Eres. And whilst I've accepted that I'll never recover that long-lost floral bikini from Prince Edward Island, I’ve stopped searching for the perfect swimsuit. I found it—it just turned out to only have one piece.

“Swimwear has always felt incredibly personal to us because it reflects the way we actually live and dress,” echo Sami Lorking-Tanner and Evangeline Titilas, the co-founders of resortwear brand With Jéan. “For us, swimwear isn't separate from fashion. After Hailey Bieber wore a chocolate brown bikini to launch Rhode’s latest summer collection—which included the sought-after bronzers and glowing highlighter milk—the shade was officially cemented in the canon of covetable bikini trends. Now, every swimwear expert and authority is co-signing the trend. “You can never go wrong with brown!” explains Sinkovskiy. “2026 sees a shift towards more neutral and monochromatic colour palettes, with fudge tones taking centre stage,” the founder of Fella, Christine Tang-Corte, acknowledges.

2. Deep Black

Style Notes: “If a shade feels beautiful and timeless, we'll continue to revisit it,” says Sinkovskiy, which feels like a perfect description for why black bikinis prevail as one of the biggest bikini colour trends, season after season. Timeless to a fault, this is a colour that will never fade. “You can never understate the importance of a black bikini,” Lorking-Tanner and Titilas explain. However, if you’re looking for an elevated option to see you through the scorching weekends ahead, why not opt for something a little more contemporary with beaded fixtures? “Delicate embellishments like beads, buttons, contrast binding and vintage-inspired hardware are really coming through, adding detail without making the pieces feel overdesigned,” they add.

Style Notes: Tang-Corte add that we’re seeing a shift away from “ultra-neon shades, especially bright pink”. But does that mean this just-bitten shade is twice shy? Summer, we've missed you. And as much as we may complain when temperatures have been reaching a less-than-gentle 35 degrees in the UK, as soon as the sun hits, you'll find us flocking to the nearest open spaces for alfresco dining, plenty of sunbathing, and, if you're lucky enough to find yourself in proximity to a pool, plenty of swimming. What we wear during summer has to tick a lot of boxes. Whilst the runways work through the same cycles of sheer separates and light dresses, one area that is often overlooked (but is just as important) is swimwear. "[Swimwear] used to feel like an afterthought, something you grabbed before a holiday. Now, it's one of the most considered purchases a woman makes," notes Candice Swanepoel, model, founder and creative director of swimwear brand Tropic of C. "Part of that is travel; people are going further, staying longer and documenting more. When you're in Miami, the Maldives or Ibiza, your swim look matters just as much as anything else in your suitcase.

"Beyond travel, I think the design conversation has genuinely evolved. We're seeing real craft in this space now [through] thoughtful construction and beautiful fabrics that last. There's also a lot more comfort intelligence; cuts that actually work for different bodies rather than just one very narrow ideal. That excites me enormously. Women are demanding more, and the industry is finally delivering."

With more options and better fits than ever before, next on the agenda is deciding which style to go for. Simple classics? Experimental shapes? Brights and prints, or monochrome minimalism? Style Notes: Often the biggest fashion trends are echoed across swimwear too, and after we've spent the last few months channelling French summer romance (think bandanas, Broderie anglaise blouses, and basket bags), the same countryside aesthetic is showing up in swimwear too. Expect plenty of ruffles, ruching, capped sleeves and ditsy florals thanks to this romantic trend that prioritises comfort thanks to the soft cups and high-waisted briefs.

Style Notes: What happens if you take one part festival season, one part boho and add a little "Pucci summer"? "I'm really drawn to the return of elegant minimalism: clean lines, sculptural cuts, nothing extraneous," adds Swanepoel. "There is something so refreshing about a perfectly cut one-piece or a simple triangle top in a beautiful colour. It feels quietly luxurious."

Style Notes: Rash suits at the ready! In 2026, you don't have to be a pro surfer to lean into the sportier side of swimwear. If you're looking for beachwear that goes seamlessly from sea to street, the board shorts, cropped tees and sporty shades that the fashion crowd have been wearing this summer are going to come into their own when paired with zip-up suits and swim shoes. "I love how earthy, sun-baked tones are having a moment: terracotta, warm sand, deep bronze," notes Swanepoel. "They feel so right against sun-kissed skin." Whether you opt for embellished bikini tops or elegant one-pieces, these earth tones tap into the bohemian trend that is accessorised perfectly with sarongs, headscarves and plenty of beaded and shell jewellery.

1. I WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT: My Shoe-Shopping Trick

Style Notes: One thing I’ve always done and continue to do is buy items I rate in multiple colours (if they are available), and the most successful category to do this with, in my humble opinion, is shoes. I wouldn’t say this about anything else, but one can never have enough shoes. I’ve followed this tactic at every price point, from designer options (like some over-the-knee boots I have in brown and beige suede from French brand L’Autre Chose, both worn goodness knows how many times), through to countless high-street options from Zara, M&S, Boden and more. This month, I discovered the most elegant little pair of leather kitten-heel sandals from & Other Stories. They were on sale, so I took a punt and bought all three colourways of butter yellow, pale pink and burgundy. As it turns out, they’re well-made, incredibly comfortable and super easy to wear all day at work. So, if there’s any advice I can give you (especially if you, like me, have fussy feet), it’s to buy the damn shoes you enjoy wearing in as many colours as you can—you won’t regret it!

2. UNDER THE RADAR: Karla Colletto Swimwear

Style Notes: It’s deeply embarrassing to share a picture of myself in a swimsuit, but this is important, and this newsletter means I shouldn’t gatekeep. A decade ago, I took the sage advice of Marie Claire’s fashion director and longtime swimwear expert, Lily Russo, and tried out a swimsuit from Karla Colletto. She recommended it to me as a classic style that has all of the clever underpinnings (like layered mesh and underwires) to keep my boobs in check and make the most of the hourglass figure I have—something which can make shopping for swimwear at a cheaper price point quite a depressing process. I’ve never looked back. I chose a ruched red swimsuit from the US brand, and it has more stamina than a Duracell bunny; my figure and weight have fluctuated since I bought it, and this one-piece has continued to serve me well. You can see me in the swimsuit in 2016 and as recently as last year; it hasn’t bobbled, stretched out, lost its elastic or faded in colour. I’d rather spend this amount on one swimsuit and have it last for over 10 years than repeatedly buy cheap and cheerful bikinis that disintegrate after one getaway and don’t do anything for my body anyway. 3. ASK HANNAH ANYTHING (about style)

“I’m looking for white skirts that aren’t see-through (but also not £££). Help!"

Hannah says, "It’s tricky to know when you’re shopping online whether a white fabric is see-through or not; however, I have one workaround to give you a good start: look for a style that has a lined layer. I have two white skirts from last summer that are good examples: one is a cotton, full-skirted midi from Aligne that uses the same fabric for the top and under layers, and the other is a slip skirt from Mint Velvet that uses a finer lining to ensure a smooth and non-see-through finish. If you can’t get a double layer, look for a thicker fabric, and (as boring as this is) read the reviews!"

Swimwear is always a focal point of any summer wardrobe, however in the spring/summer 2025 collections swimming costumes weren't just for the beach and lidos, but were also styled for chlorine-free city days. At Miu Miu brightly coloured swimsuits with cut-outs were worn like bodysuits with pleated midis and patent leather pencil skirts, while at Tory Burch black streamlined swimsuits you’d typically see in London’s Aquatic centre were worn with tailored trousers instead of swimming caps and nose plugs. This unlocked the styling potential of the humble swimsuit, proving they should be given more attention than being a pre-flight “this will do” purchase.

A black swimsuit will always be a stylish, classic purchase, however if you are looking to dive into new territory, there are a number of swimwear trends causing a splash this summer. After years of minimalist suits, five-star resorts are about to be inundated with designer swimwear with a more-is-more White Lotus energy, that couldn’t possibly be mistaken for a H&M lunchtime purchase. The Burberry checked bikini has had a significant marketing push for 2025, with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley diving off a yacht in her plaid, stringy set in the high summer campaign. Missoni zig zags, Chanel hardware, Pucci swirls and Gucci heritage prints are also riding the wave of this post-quiet luxury approach to beachwear.

Miu Miu has also had a significant influence over summer 2025 swimwear trends with sporty bikini tops and briefs that have a contrast piping trim. It’s a subtle detailing that you’ll see across new-in sections, from monochrome suits to more punchy colour combinations. 2025'S BIGGEST SWIM TRENDS:

1. Designer Logo Swim

Style Notes: Resortwear has been steadily rebelling against the quiet luxury movement, with looks that are as flamboyant and colourful as a cruise cocktail menu. Luxury brands such as Burberry, Pucci and Gucci are leaning into their heritage prints, with swimwear inspired by the archives. Forget subtlety, this is all about dressing like you are Kris Jenner spending your summer yachting your way around the Med. Don’t limit the logo-dropping to just the swimsuit, Jaclyn in White Lotus season 3 is another muse, with her opulent kaftans and logo-splattered Gucci hat. Ravello is ready for you.

2. String Bikinis

Style Notes: Barely-there string bikinis have been a dominant silhouette for several summers, but this Copacabana look is sticking around for another year. A black or white triangle bikini is a trusted base to many-a beachwear looks, however for those looking for something a little extra there are plenty of styles with extra embellishment, from beading to chain detailing. Style Notes: Swimwear this year is all about the finer details, and the wider trend for corsage detailing is making its way into your suitcase. Brands such as Maygel Coronel, Marlies Grace and Magda Butrym are leading this look, with swimsuits and bikinis adorned with floral embellishments. Sure, tranquil waves are made to be splashed in wearing one of Hunza G’s crinkled cossies or Peony’s floral tie-up shapes, but as many brands are proving nowadays, swimsuits are more versatile than you may initially think. “Swimwear is being styled like ready-to-wear now,” explains Bianca Bennetts, the co-founder and CEO of Australian swimwear brand FAE. Of course, if we’re talking about transitional pieces that suit both the street and the sand, it would be remiss of us not to mention the most in-demand bikinis of the season: Rèalisation Par’s collaboration with Frankie’s Bikinis.

Indeed, from Malibu to Mayfair, the results of this synergetic collaboration can be seen peaking out from the brand’s cheeky cover-ups or sensually blissful dresses; an itty bitty polka-dot balconette bikini, crochet cherries hanging from underneath a python print slip dress or daring stripes that whisk you away to iconic holiday locales like the Caribbean cabaret bar, Le Ti St Barth.

“Holiday dressing is something we’ve always felt confident in—it’s where Réal really comes to life,” explains Realisation Par’s co-founders Teale Talbolt and Alexander Spencer. Speaking to Who What Wear exclusively about the collection, Talbot, CEO and design director, and Spencer, creative director, added, “swimwear was the natural next step. It made perfect sense to add another element to the way a Dreamgirl could pack for summer. Now, it’s not just the dress you throw on after the beach—it’s the bikini you wear to it.”

When I asked about what it is about the brand that suits so many different cities and tastes as an Australian brand with Los Angeles roots and a large following in London, they had this to say: “Each design pieces that tap into a universal desire, which is to look and feel like the best version of yourself. There’s an effortlessness to our dresses that fits seamlessly into city life, summer holidays, and everything in between. This is where I dig for dial-up, vintage-inspired femininity that turns heads,” she explains. “Looking to today, I have noticed that women, especially when going out, want to feel a freedom of movement and expect their silhouettes to look gilded over their skin,” she adds.

“I remember wearing a '50s-esque bikini that I wore every summer as a kid. It was so well-loved that it eventually started to sag. [These memories remind me that] I have always been drawn to vintage dressing and feel as though each piece I design carries some sort of nostalgia.”

Style Notes: There’s a reason why classics endure, and it’s because the elements are so ageless that they’re unable to be dated to a specific time period. Opting for a timeless piece will save you from future bikini-related regret, but don’t for a second think that these eternal cuts and colours are boring when compared to ritzy prints or novel shapes. This season, swimwear designers are introducing charming add-ons to lasting trends like the black triangle bikini (a design that is arguably the LBD of the swim world). We've finally reached the point of the year when the summer holiday countdown is underway, meaning the following things are imminent: sandy toes, basket bags and an excellent holiday capsule wardrobe. And second to deciphering how to condense your favourite summer holiday outfits into flight-approved luggage comes the complex question of swimwear.

Between impenetrable size guidelines, bust support levels and fabric options, there's much to decipher when it comes to swimwear. Amongst the most frequent questions I get asked as a fashion editor are where to buy the best bikinis and swimsuits, which shapes suit which body types (the ones that make you feel the best) and the justification for the price disparity between what's on the market.

Since 2021, we've witnessed a rising interest in high-end, high-quality swimwear, spearheaded by brands like Hunza G. So, what makes a swimwear brand sustainable? If you regularly read my content on Who What Wear UK, you may be aware of my love for independent brands and natural materials, but these fabrics have limitations. Swimwear fabrics are akin to those of most high-performance clothing: water-resistant, elasticated, fast-drying and functional, and there are a handful of fibres and resins that fit the criteria. More often than not, sustainable swimwear is made from one of three: Econyl (regenerated nylon, typically sourced from landfills and oceans), Repreve (a durable fibre made from recycled plastic bottles) or recycled synthetics, such as post-consumer recycled polyester.

On occasion, recycled materials may be melded with virgin textiles to maintain integrity and ensure durability. Particularly scrupulous brands will ensure the continuation of the sustainable process across manufacturing, with considered dyes, attachments and fastenings; and some have attained Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) and Global Recycled Standard (GRS) accreditations.

Investing in premium-quality brands which uphold values and work with transparent production is a refreshing approach to sustainable shopping that I favour. Shopping for sustainable swimwear often equates to condensed and limited stocks, which is another powerful tool when tackling overconsumption in the fashion industry.

If someone were to ask me what my happy place is, this is what it would look like: I'm on a beach, I've had a whole day of being on a lounger in the sun, and I'm about to watch the sunset with a cocktail.

As cliché as it may sound, holiday me is the happiest me. Which is why I'll always take any opportunity to get on a flight to, well, basically anywhere that's hot. Preferring summer over winter is, of course, a tricky one when you live in the UK, but the first sign of sunshine and you bet my linen shorts and sandals are on.

With two hen dos and a wedding abroad this year, as well as a few work trips, I'm going to be planning a lot of warm-weather outfits over the next few months, which is why I wanted to find out all the key spring/summer 2025 beachwear trends. And I did so with the help of a swimwear expert. I asked Ingemae Kotze, founder of Away That Day (one of my all-time favourite swimwear brands), what we can all expect to see on the beaches this summer.

She told me, "Our polka-dot print swimwear has really stood out and been a best-seller since its launch. I also studied the spring/summer runways to see what other trends (hello, nautical) will be dominating the sandy shores this year, and I've concluded that these are the nine beachwear trends you'll see fashion people wearing all summer.

1. Crochet

Style Notes: Whether you take style tips from April and go for a maxi dress or look to the catwalks where the likes of Acne Studios and Elie Saab had matchy-matchy sets, there's one thing you need to keep consistent: crochet. The texture is the key to that laidback summer beach vibe and I can't get enough of it.

That being said, I know that for some (myself included), swimwear shopping can feel daunting. If the often minimal and form-fitting designs aren’t enough to send you running home in a panic, finding pieces that actually make you feel comfortable can be a real challenge. With this in mind, I have two key tips for you.

1. Buy online and try on at home. When you remove the time pressure, the dodgy, overexposed lighting and the endless angled mirrors usually found in fitting rooms, you can take your time to decide whether the swimwear is right for you, and you can also bring out your summer clothes to ress the item up or down and style it the way you would on holiday. By doing this, you’ll quickly figure out whether it’s the swimsuit or just the stress of the setting making you feel unsure.

With my own holiday still weeks away, I've been living out my European summer dreams vicariously via my favourite celebrities' Instagram feeds.
