Before I detail all of the extra skin benefits it offers, I want to start with the most basic and important aspect: sun protection. It delivers broad-spectrum SPF 50 to keep the skin safe from harsh UVA and UVB rays. The chemical sunscreen uses a combo of UV filters, including avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene.

Beyond that, though, it offers myriad benefits. Let's talk about hydration first. Thanks to hyaluronic acid and glycerin, it moisturises the skin for an impressive 72 hours after application. Those ingredients also contribute to the sunscreen's lightweight, watery texture, but more on that in a minute. Meanwhile, niacinamide and panthenol strengthen the skin's natural moisture barrier to keep that hydration locked in and even balance oil production.

If you have oily skin, I’d recommend giving Bioderma’s Dry Touch Sunscreen a try. Formulated with mattifying powders to soak up excess oil and a cellular bioprotection patent to protect the skin against premature photo-ageing, this water-resistant SPF melts into the skin without leaving behind a white cast or greasy residue. This makes it ideal for those with both oily and acne-prone skin, who often have trouble with heavier sunscreen formulas, especially when temperatures rise.

I often find myself looking for mature-skin product suggestions due to how nourishing they are. Packed with azelaic acid to target acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation, as well as iron oxides, which help to ward off the high-energy visible light that causes dark spots, this formula has been praised for its ability to even out skin tones and reduce further hyperpigmentation. I have to admit, I haven’t used it long enough to see the full skincare benefits; however, its glowy and hydrating formula is enough for me to continue using it.

6. SVR Sun Secure Blur SPF50+ Perfecting Mousse-Primer

Finding an SPF to sit under your makeup without pilling can be a challenge, but luckily, SVR’s Perfecting Mousse-Primer is a hybrid formula that allows you to both protect and prime your skin. Not only is the mousse texture extremely fun to apply, but it sits beautifully under my foundation, meaning I don't have to worry about flaking or dry patches. I do have to note that it’s not fragrance-free, which might be an issue for some, but as someone with sensitive, eczema-prone skin, this did not cause me any issues.

7. Caudalie Invisible High Protection Stick SPF50

An SPF stick is one of my go-to ways to top up my sun protection when I’m on the go around the city. Enriched with nourishing grape seed oil and cocoa seed butter, Caudalie’s Invisible High Protection Stick is moisturising without feeling sticky or greasy. It has a clear consistency, almost like a lip balm and keeps my skin soft and moisturised while providing a smooth, invisible finish. When I have a full-coverage base on, it can disturb the products on my face slightly, so this product is best for no-makeup or light makeup days.

8. Nuxe Sun Oil Gold Shimmer SPF50

An SPF oil is my go-to sunscreen formula in summer, when I want something that doesn’t leave a white cast on my body, and Nuxe’s Sun Oil Gold Shimmer SPF 50 gives me this, plus a shimmery, high-shine finish that’s reminiscent of being on a sun-soaked getaway. It has the most gorgeous true gold finish, which blends in with my deeper skin, but this formula will work for medium and light skin tones as well. And if that doesn't convince you, then let it be known that it also smells incredible, with notes of sweet orange, tiaré flower and vanilla.

But as someone who works in beauty, I’ve tried a lot of SPFs in my time, and finding one without a white cast has been a challenge to say the least. Of course, this is fine when I’m layering a full face of makeup on top, but on my no-makeup days, a suncream that leaves a chalky residue all over my darker skin tone is a genuine nightmare.

Having the same struggles? Well, never fear, because gone are the days of streaky, ashen faces that feel heavy and greasy, and in their place lies a myriad of sun protection formulas that feel lightweight and, more importantly, are undetectable on the skin. But with this, I couldn’t help but wonder how these invisible SPFs compare to traditional sunscreen formulas, and whether they are actually an effective way to protect myself from the sun.

To help navigate my way through the world of the best SPFs without white cast, I sat down with consultant dermatologist, Dr Mary Sommerlad, to answer my burning questions.

What Is an SPF?

Dr Sommerlad says, “SPF stands for sun protection factor and is a marker of how much protection a sunscreen formula gives a person from the rays of sunlight that can burn the skin and contribute to skin cancer formation, known as ultraviolet B (UV-B).

"In the UK, SPF is usually given as a number, such as 30 or 50. "SPF does not indicate how much UVA protection sunscreen provides. UVA causes premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and skin cancer. So you should choose broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF 30 or 50 and a good UVA protection, especially if you have darker skin tones.”

Why Do Some SPFs Leave a White Cast?

“A white cast is common in mineral sunscreens or sunscreens that are hybrid and have a lot of inorganic/ mineral filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These filters sit on the skin and are naturally white in appearance. In those with deeply pigmented skin, the contrast between the natural skin tone and the ashen appearance of the sunscreen filter gives a more striking white cast. This is even more obvious in 100% mineral sunscreens, hybrid sunscreens that have high levels of zinc oxide and if the sunscreen formulation is very thick (e.g., a cream or paste sunscreen rather than a liquid/ fluid/ gel)”, explains Dr Sommerlad.

Are Chemical or Mineral SPFs Better for Avoiding White Cast?

Dr Sommerlad states that, “Chemical sunscreens are far better than mineral SPFs at avoiding white casts, as the filters do not reflect visible light. Instead, they use filters that have been tested for many years and have a strong safety profile with minimal absorption into the body. Micronised mineral sunscreens can also have reduced white cast as the Zinc has been processed to a much smaller particle size, which is useful to know if you are looking for a mineral-only sunscreen.”

1. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5

After seeing Beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 SPF50+ on my TikTok FYP for months, I finally decided to give it a try. I knew it was described as a non-white-cast formula, but I genuinely did not expect it to be quite so invisible as it actually was. And that's not even the best part of it. Often, when it's really hot outside, I feel discouraged about applying my SPF because it can feel heavy and sticky on my face, but this formula is a light, watery lotion that stays hydrating without feeling greasy. I saw a lot of beauty content creators on TikTok suggest this for those with oily skin, but as someone with eczema and extremely dehydrated skin, rest assured that this SPF is perfect for those with dry skin as well.

2. Cerave Invisible Hydrating Sunscreen

As I mentioned above, I have extremely dry and sensitive skin, so finding an SPF that comes with all the benefits of a hydrating moisturiser is always a plus to me. CeraVe’s Invisible Hydrating Sunscreen is packed with skin-loving ingredients such as a triple ceramide complex and vitamins E that nourish the skin without feeling too greasy. When I first squeezed this sunscreen out of the tube, I was worried that the formula would be too thick and leave a white residue on my skin, but it sheers out into an undetectable layer of sun protection, something I’ll be very grateful for on those non-makeup days.

3. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Oil Control Fluid

When it comes to sunscreens without a white cast, La Roche-Posay is a brand that is loved by dermatologists and beauty editors alike. This formula is a lightweight fluid that is sweat-resistant and helps to absorb excess oil for a long-lasting mattifying effect on the face. And don’t be afraid of the slightly beige formula, I find that there is still no white cast left on the skin, making it perfect for those looking for an invisible sunscreen that’s not too greasy. But if you have dry skin, never fear, as this French pharmacy brand also has a regular formula that’s hydrating and just as undetectable.

4. L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Filler Deep Replumping Anti-Ageing

I don’t have mature skin, but I often find myself looking for mature-skin product suggestions due to how moisturising they are. L’Oréal Paris’ Revitalift Filler Deep Replumping Anti-Ageing is a day cream that was created to replump the skin with moisture, tone the face and reduce wrinkles. It’s lightweight and non-greasy, absorbing into the skin without leaving any residue. I love that it’s a two-in-one SPF/moisturiser hybrid, making your skincare routine easier on busy mornings. My only note would be that it’s not fragrance-free, so it could cause irritation in those with sensitive skin.

5. Mimétique Everyday 50 Invisible Face Fluid

When it comes to facial SPFs, finding a formula that simultaneously protects me from UV rays and works to treat my skin concerns was a top priority. Mimétique’s Everyday 50 Invisible Face Fluid offers the SPF 50 protection I’m looking for and simultaneously uses Biomimetic peptides and antioxidant-rich exosomes to even out the skin tone. I have to admit that I haven't yet seen any results regarding my dark spots; however, its glowy and hydrating formula is enough to get me to continue using it.

6. Garnier Ambre Solaire Super Uv Face Protection Sun Cream Fluid

If you're looking for a non-white-cast sunscreen that’s effective without requiring you to break the bank, Garnier has nailed it with their Ambre Solaire SPF that sits at a very budget-friendly £14. It has a fluid consistency that makes it feel super lightweight on the face, but it's also packed with hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and glycerin to help moisturise and nourish the skin. I’m usually a luxury skincare lover myself, but I cannot deny that this product’s formula and packaging feel way more sophisticated than its £14 price tag, rivalling a number of high-end options on the market.

7. Tatcha The Milky Sunscreen

Some luxury skincare products are undeniably worth the extra splurge, and Tatcha’s The Milky Sunscreen is just that. If you’re someone who hates the feeling of SPF on your face, this is the formula to try. I’ve described other formulas in the round-up as lightweight, but this is by far the sheerest formula I tested. And don’t just take it from me, one reviewer described it as “so light you don't feel as though wearing a factor 50 sunscreen at all.”

8. Summer Fridays Shadedrops Broad Spectrum Mineral Milk

Finding an SPF that will sit well under your makeup without pilling can be a challenge, but luckily, Summer Friday’s new hybrid formula is the perfect solution. Not only is the packaging extremely chic, but this invisible formula is packed with ceramides and shea butter to help nourish the skin, as well as vitamin E, vitamin C and ectoin that work to protect the skin from free radicals. It sits beautifully under makeup, but can also be worn alone for a glowy base. As someone with eczema, I love how hydrating and rich this formula is, but I would be cautious for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

8. Caudalie Invisible High Protection Stick

An SPF stick is one of my go-to ways to top up my sun protection when I’m on the go, but it’s also a great alternative for those who don't like the feeling of traditional sunscreen on their face. Caudalie’s Invisible High Protection Stick has a clear consistency, almost like a lip balm, but it doesn't feel sticky at all. Enriched with nourishing grape seed oil and cocoa seed butter, it keeps my skin soft and moisturised while providing a smooth, invisible finish with no white cast. It works best on no-makeup and light makeup, but when I have a full-coverage base on, it can disturb the products on my face slightly, so I’ll still be opting for an SPF spray on those days.

10. Naked Sundays Hydrating Glow Face Mist

Finding an SPF that provides effective sun protection and hydrates my skin effectively without causing irritation has been a journey, to say the least. But I haven’t put down Naked Sundays SPF 50+ Hydrating Glow Mist since I discovered it a few years back. When I have a full face of makeup on, I use it after my normal setting spray to melt everything in, leaving me with a dewy and fresh base ready for the day. But I also use it on non-makeup days to give my bare skin a glow as I’m on the move. And if that doesn't convince you, then let it be known that it also smells incredible, so much so that I get asked all the time what perfume I’m using whenever I spray it.

11. Vichy Capital Soleil Cell Protect Oil

The easiest way to get sun protection without a white cast? An SPF oil, of course, and Vichy's Capital Soleil Cell Protect Oil SPF 50 is a dry-touch spray formula that promises to leave the skin soft and radiant without feeling too heavy. Not to mention that this multi-purpose formula can also be applied to the scalp and ends of hair for added sun protection. It also contains vitamin E, 1% squalane and ceramides for moisturising properties. Despite being labelled a dry oil, this did feel slightly oilier on the skin than the other SPF oils I tried; however, with my skin type, I did not mind this at all.

How Can I Make Sure My No-Cast SPF Is Working?

Dr Sommerlad gives her tips on effective sunscreen application below:

1. Apply sunscreen BEFORE leaving the house—consider it the final step of skincare and before make-up.

2. Apply sunscreen after any serums or moisturisers you have used have mostly dried down—fluid/ liquid/ gel formulations will always blend in better than a cream (save creams for the limbs/ body).

3. Ensure you cover all exposed skin with a thin film of your sunscreen—if you are spending the day outside, I recommend "double application" in order to get the full benefit of the sunscreen (most of us use far less than the amount that the sunscreens are tested on in lab environments); in practice, that means applying the sunscreen, waiting 2 minutes, then reapplying it.

4. Reapply after sweating, after gym or swimming or every two hours in warm weather—don't forget the edges of the face as well as the neck, the ears, upper chest and back of hands.

5. Store your sunscreen away from direct sunlight and remember to replace sunscreens that have sat out in the sun, are more than 6 months old, or have breaks in the packaging.

6. Use sprays to reapply if you have used makeup, but be aware that sprays may not give you the same coverage as a liquid/ fluid sunscreen.

As an editor with combination skin, dealing with oiliness is the bane of my beauty life. The Formula

Whilst I'm a fan of Beauty of Joseon's Tinted SPF, there are two non-tinted, chemical-based sunscreens that I'm totally obsessed with: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ and Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 SPF50+. Truthfully, I love both formulas, but below are the key differences between them.

Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+

This TikTok-viral SPF is truly deserving of its hype. The SPF50+ formula is delivered in a soft, creamy lotion texture that melts weightlessly onto the skin on contact. Ingredients-wise, you'll find 30% rice extract, which includes vitamins B, C and E and amino acids alongside grain-fermented extracts that work as a probiotic for the skin.

I find this consistency hydrating enough to use in place of my moisturiser to help prevent any shiny situations throughout the day, but it's a great all-rounder for all skin types that crave hydration without the heaviness of most SPFs. It's best suited to dry or balanced skin types and is soothing and calming on sensitive skin, too. There's zero white cast, and it sinks in quickly, so you can go straight in with makeup if you want. I tend to go for this version in the colder seasons when my skin requires a bit more moisture.

Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 SPF50+

This formula might be my favourite of the two, especially for the warmer months. It has an even lighter lotion consistency that sinks in immediately with a refreshing and water-like texture, making it a great SPF for oily skin. It quenches the skin with hydration but no greasy residue, no white cast and not a hint of stickiness. I'd recommend this formula for those with oilier or combination skin types who want a virtually weightless SPF that sits well underneath makeup and won't exacerbate any shininess. It sinks in within seconds and doesn't pill underneath my makeup either.

The ingredients differ in this formula too, which includes rice-seed water and vitamin B5 to hydrate and moisturise without being too rich on the skin. It dries down to a totally non-sticky matte finish, and sits well underneath makeup throughout the day. I usually switch to this formula when the weather warms up, and my makeup requires a lighter base.

The Application

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the two formulas. They both sink in pretty fast, but I'd say that the Aqua-Fresh formula just pips it, and the Rice + Probiotics formula feels more moisturising. However, both blend into a second-skin, non-greasy finish and don't leave any white cast.

My Verdict

Honestly? These might be two of the best SPFs I've tried. Not only are they a delight to wear underneath makeup, but they don't leave a hint of oiliness behind either. They're SPFs that I actually want to use. Above, I'm wearing foundation over the top of the SPFs on both sides of my face, and it applied seamlessly and without any excess shine. In fact, I didn't actually need to add powder either. A big thumbs up.

If you're weighing up which one to get, I'd advise going for the Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ formula if you have dry or a balanced skin type, want a bit more hydration or want an SPF that doubles as your moisturiser too. If you're on the oily or combination side, then you will love the Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 SPF50+. It sits so well underneath makeup and doesn't exacerbate my skin's oily tendencies or cause breakouts. Up until a couple of months ago, I had used the same SPF for knocking on two years (Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face, FYI, is still the best sunscreen ever made, in my opinion). Every day, I slathered the moisturising SPF cream over my face as the last step of my skincare routine. I had found my SPF soulmate, and I was never looking back.

But then, an email dropped into my inbox. Simple wanted to inform me that it was launching a top-secret new SPF fluid in the form of Simple Invisible UV Fluid SPF 50. It's the sort of email I receive countless of every week, but something about it piqued my interest, so I uncharacteristically decided to try it out for a couple of months. And let me tell you, it's good. It's so good, in fact, that ever since finishing my first tube, it has become my top-most affordable SPF recommendation. (My Mecca Cosmetica soulmate, sadly, does not fit into the affordable camp, after all.) It has, frankly, left me gobsmacked and, well, humbled. Here's what to know...

Simple Invisible UV Fluid SPF50, Reviewed

The Formula

First of all, I want to note that the above tube is actually not the final packaging—I was sent this tube ahead of launch, and some tweaks have been made to the exterior. So please do not be alarmed: the product is indeed called Simple Invisible UV Fluid SPF 50.

So, what do you need to know about this formula? For starters, it is a very, very lightweight fluid. It has the same sort of runny consistency as La Roche-Posay's iconic Anthelios UVMune, but it has significantly more oomph when it comes to hydration thanks to a hit of nourishing ceramides.

Inside this seemingly unassuming fluid, however, is a combination of very, very impressive skincare ingredients. For starters, you've got your high-protection UVA and UVB filters—the sort that will protect your skin from the sun's damaging rays just as effectively on the hottest days of the year as it does on the most overcast. Then there's the niacinamide, one of my favourite ingredients in skincare—it works to soothe, nourish, regulate oil production and also even out skin tone. The star of the show, however, is Simple's trademarked Gluta-Amino™, a concoction of powerful antioxidants and amino acids (most predominantly, glutathione) that boost the skin's natural glow and fight against uneven skin tone.

Oh, and it does all of this without a hint of greasiness or a smidge of white cast (it's a chemical formula, so no chalky minerals to be found here).

The Application

As mentioned, the fluid texture is runny, but the nourishing ingredients still give it a lightweight lotion feel. It rubs in with unparalleled ease (as you can see from my shaky, one-handed application above) and truly does turn invisible.

While at first, skin appears slightly shiny (as it does after applying any lotion), after just a few seconds, any visible trace of the SPF is totally gone. After applying, it simply feels as though you have layered on a very, very lightweight serum.

Simple Invisible UV Fluid SPF50 also possesses a very light and fresh sunscreen scent—it's something I really quite like, but those who hate fragrance in their skincare should be aware of it.

The most notable thing of all, immediately after application, is the lit-from-within sort of radiance and glow that my skin has. It's the sort that I have only ever witnessed after a 12-minute sauna session. My skin is plump, naturally radiant and healthy-looking.

The Verdict

As you can see above, I am wearing no base products—I've simply dabbed on a little blusher onto the high points of my cheeks, run some brow gel through my brows and applied a few coatings of mascara. But my skin? My skin genuinely looks as though I've applied a glow-boosting skin tint. It's not greasy or shiny, it's just glowing.

I can, hand on heart, say that I have never come across a facial sunscreen with an ingredients list (and results) this good for less than £20. Even the best affordable sunscreen formulas ever made sit around the £20 mark. It's been such an issue, in fact, that when people ask me for affordable SPF recommendations, I have to caveat that I know £20-£25 isn't cheap, but if you really want the results, then that's what you need to spend.

But all of that has changed. At £9, I am absolutely blown away. Is it the most luxurious and visually appealing product out there? Of course not, but it does exactly what it promises to do. Simple has done something I previously thought was impossible—produced a truly invisible, second-skin facial SPF that doesn't sting my eyes or break me out... all for less than £15.

When it comes to my year-round skincare routine, and most likely yours too, SPF is a non-negotiable. But as someone looking for both an SPF for sensitive skin and an SPF for my deeper skin tone, I've tried so many facial SPFs that are either too dehydrating or leave an ashy white cast on my face. And, might I add, the perils don't stop there—finding a body sunscreen that also ticks the boxes is equally as hard. Enter the SPF oil—a glowy and hydration-boosting product that has completely changed my outlook on sun protection.

However, since being introduced to them, I can't help but wonder how they compare to traditional sunscreen formulas, and whether they are an actually effective way to protect myself from the sun. If you're curious about this as well, I spoke with an expert to break down what we should all know about SPF oils.

What Is an SPF Oil?

An SPF oil is a sun protection product that combines effective broad-spectrum sunscreen ingredients with nourishing oils that provide a wide range of different skincare benefits. Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Mary Sommerlad says, "The main difference between an oil sunscreen and a cream sunscreen is the formulation, which dictates the texture and the finish. Oil is a lipid-based formulation only with little to no water, giving a lightweight transparent formula which has an oil texture and glossy finish, perfect for those wanting a dewy/glass-skin look. Creams are a combination of oil and water to create an opaque formula, which can have a fluid or stiffer texture and can have a matte or glossy finish based on the ingredients."

This means that, unlike traditional SPF creams or lotions, SPF oils are transparent formulas that leave the face and body with a luminous sheen, making them perfect for those of us who seek hydration without the white cast that thicker creams and SPF serums often leave behind.

Are Oil Sunscreens as Effective as Classic Cream Formulas?

The easy answer? They can be, but like all types of sun protection, it's important that they are used correctly. Dr Sommerlad states that, "An oil sunscreen should, in theory, be as effective as a cream sunscreen in terms of UVB (SPF) protection and any UVA claims provided—it is formulated and tested under the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation). As sunscreen is considered a cosmetic rather than a medication, there are many brands making claims that, when tested in independent labs, do not meet the SPF or UVA protection they claim to. For this reason, I recommend buying sunscreen formulated by well-known brands and from reputable outlets that test the sunscreens they sell. In addition, in real-world experience, oils may be trickier to ensure an even coverage, leading to missed areas of skin."

What Is the Most Effective Way to Apply an SPF Oil?

Similarly to SPF waters, because of their lightweight consistency, SPF oils can be more difficult to apply evenly. To get the most out of them, start with clean, dry skin and use about a teaspoon of SPF oil for your face and neck and around 6-8 teaspoons of the product to effectively cover the rest of your body. The benefit of SPF oils is that they glide on seamlessly, but because they can feel deceptively nourishing, rubbing them into the skin thoroughly is key for maximum protection.

Dr Sommerlad agrees. "Unlike with a cream, it is harder to ensure you have the "two finger lengths" amount [of sunscreen for the face], as oils are transparent and liquid; therefore, I recommend double application. Apply a thin, even amount to the sun-exposed areas, wait a minute or two, then reapply to ensure even and complete coverage. Reapply every two hours, after sweating/ perspiration and after swimming," she says.

What Are “Tan-Boosting” SPF Oils?

According to Dr Sommerlad, SPF oils marketed as tan-boosting should be pursued with caution. "Tan boosting is a marketing term that can have different meanings. It may mean that the oil contains pigments to give the skin the appearance of a tan. It may also mean it contains ingredients that stimulate the pigment cells, melanin, to make more. Finally, it may mean it contains ingredients that accelerate pigment production when the skin is exposed to sunlight. In this situation, one hopes the manufacturer is referring to day-to-day sun exposure rather than deliberate sunbathing.

"As a dermatologist, I would also advocate a fake tan as there is no such thing as a 'safe' or 'base' tan. Therefore, I would always recommend using higher value protections (eg SPF30 or 50) and reapply every 2 hours or after perspiring or swimming."

As a Jones Road Beauty fan (and a long-time fan of makeup artist and founder, Bobbi Brown), I was so excited to hear that the brand would be launching a facial SPF—and so was the rest of the internet. In fact, Jones Road Everyday Sunscreen might just be one of the most highly anticipated beauty launches of the year so far.

Brown is someone who knows how to do "no-makeup" makeup so well, and I've been really impressed with all of the foundation and base launches from Jones Road. So, it seems only natural that Bobbi would bring her natural-looking approach to sun protection via the new Everyday Sunscreen (£40). I received a sample ahead of the launch, and I couldn't wait to see what it was like.

The Formula

This sunscreen is a mineral SPF formula with SPF 30. The consistency feels like a rich, hydrating moisturiser as you apply it. I tested one of the tinted shades (Sunny, the lightest shade in the four tints available); however, it also comes in an untinted shade if you don't want any pigment.

Although each of the sunscreens is marketed as a tinted SPF, they are definitely more of a colour-correcting hue rather than a coverage-based shade match, so in my opinion, they'd make for great primers underneath foundation or a skin tint.

Truthfully, when I applied Sandy, the pigment looked a little chalky at first (after all, it has a mineral, zinc-based formula, rather than a chemical formula, which will inevitably leave a white cast), however, as I rubbed it into my skin it gradually blended in, matching my skin tone while cancelling out redness and making my skin look more uniform. I wouldn't say it provides tonnes of coverage (rather a sheer tint), so if you're wearing it on its own, you might want to go in with a concealer to cover any breakouts.

After

I will say that on the initial application, the formula feels exceptionally nourishing and hydrating on the skin. After a few minutes, it sinks in and leaves a dewy gleam. Once it has settled, it delivers a subtle coverage, but I did apply a little concealer on some acne scarring and redness in places.

The Verdict

Let me first say that I do like the premise of this sunscreen, and I actually do really like the formula. In fact, it is an exceptional sunscreen for those with dry skin. Because I have oily skin, I think this SPF is too rich for my skin type (sob). However, that's not to say that this is a bad sunscreen at all. I really see this working brilliantly for you if your parched skin craves long-lasting moisture throughout the day, or you want an SPF that doubles as a makeup primer.

It's very hydrating (I didn't need to apply moisturiser beforehand) and if you're particularly prone to dryness, this is a great moisturising primer underneath makeup to provide a dewy and plumped look all day long.

If you have oily or combination skin and prefer a matte finish, you might want to pass on this one. But if you love a dewy glow, you may find it's enough on its own without foundation to give you a healthy-looking glow.

My biggest piece of advice, however, is to try a tester before committing to the purchase. Why? As mentioned, there are four colour-correcting shades (ranging from Apricot, a deep burnt orange hue, to Sandy, a light beige) which each give the skin a subtle, colour-correcting tint. While I've not tried the two deepest shades, I will caveat here that I am sceptical about how suited any of these mineral sunscreens are for dark skin tones, as well as how stretchable each hue is. Similarly, the untinted version may also leave a white cast, so I'd urge you instead to take a look at our favourite SPFs for dark skin.

Summer skincare is all about taking a smart, targeted approach. Lightweight moisturisers, like gel-creams or hydrating lotions are your best friends, delivering all the hydration your skin needs without feeling heavy or greasy. Sunscreen is non-negotiable—opt for broad-spectrum formulas with a lightweight, matte, or sheer finish that won’t clog pores or leave a white cast on dark skin tones. To curate this edit of luxury summer skincare staples, I put each product through its paces in real life—fortunately, we've had our fair shade of hot, sticky commutes and sun-drenched weekends this year. As an esthetician, I’m constantly trialling formulas both on my own skin and with clients, paying close attention to how they perform in warmer weather. Ask any dermatologist or aesthetician, and they'll tell you that sunscreen is the most critical step in a skincare routine. Without it, all of the other steps, including expensive serums, toners, and moisturisers, are for naught. That's because the sun's UV rays will accelerate ageing, create new skin concerns and most importantly, increase the potential for serious health issues.

Knowing this, I'm super diligent about applying daily sunscreen, but not just any old sunscreen. I've been a beauty editor for close to 10 years. Here's the sunscreen in question—Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturising UV Lock Sunscreen SPF 45. The chemical formula offers broad-spectrum SPF 45 plus blue-light protection, with a combination of avobenzone, homosalate, and octisalate. It's the other key ingredients that really set it apart from other formulas I've tried. First, there's the hero ingredient, birch sap, which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Second, there's allantoin, which is a skin-soothing ingredient. Third, there's Portulaca oleracea extract, which is an antioxidant-rich ingredient that also goes by purslane. Add in skin-quenching humectants, and you have a next-level sunscreen.

The milky formula is so lightweight I don't feel like I'm wearing any sunscreen at all, and I can apply makeup over top of it with zero issue. (I never experience any pilling, creasing, or smudging.) It melts into the skin, so there's no need for harsh rubbing or blending. The best part? There's absolutely no white or grey cast, just smooth, plump and protected skin. What Is An SPF Water?

SPF waters have a viscous, clear formula, which is best applied to the skin via a spray. They're formulated to be hydrating and feel lightweight on the skin and often contain moisturising ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. No, this isn't a new skincare trend, but with more and more of us understanding the importance of wearing the best facial SPF on a daily basis, there is certainly an increased appetite for effective sunscreens that don't feel greasy or oily on the skin.

As someone with a big interest in Korean skincare, I've been busy testing some of the most popular sunscreens, from tinted SPF formulas to sunscreen sticks and more. Plus, I've spoken to a range of experts to find out what makes these formulas so good. You're welcome.

Is Korean Sunscreen Better Than Western Sunscreen?

First things first, I wanted to explore why Korean sunscreen formulas are so popular. This could definitely be put down to the importance of SPF becoming more prevalent within the beauty community, but one question that I have been getting asked a lot as a beauty editor is whether Korean sunscreen is actually better than Western sunscreen. While this totally comes down to personal preference, I was keen to get expert opinions on whether Korean sunscreens can be considered "better" than other sunscreen formulas.

"Korean sunscreen filters are so advanced, it hardly feels like a traditional sunscreen texture as they are often weightless, hydrating and provide a natural finish," says Charlotte Cho, esthetician and co-founder of Korean skincare brand Then I Met You.

Yes, Korean sunscreen formulas are a cut above the rest, but there's no denying that Western sunscreens have come a long way in recent years. Because of this, it's hard to say whether the answer lies just in the products themselves.

According to Sumin Lee, founder of bestselling Korean skincare brand Beauty of Joseon, it's also the attitude towards sunscreen that differs. "The difference between Korean and Western sunscreens lies less in the UV filters and more in the way sun protection is integrated into daily skincare," explains Lee. "In Korea, sunscreen is widely viewed as a natural extension of one’s skincare routine—used year-round, every day and expected to deliver not just protection but also comfort. While sun protection has traditionally been treated as a more functional category in some Western markets, there’s a growing trend toward formulas that emphasise skincare benefits, wearability, and daily use. The beauty philosophies of East and West continue to influence one another, and it’s exciting to see this cross-pollination driving innovation on both sides."

What Should I Look For in a Korean Sunscreen?

If you want to give a Korean sunscreen a go, I thought it would be handy to ask the experts what to look out for in an effective formula. As explained to me by Lee, when it comes to Korean sunscreens, you are generally in good hands, but there are a few things you can keep an eye on.

"When shopping for a good Korean sunscreen, [you want to] make sure the sunscreen has broad spectrum protection [against] UVA and UVB," says Cho. "Look for Korean sunscreens that also feature extra [skincare] benefits such as cica for soothing and calming the skin."

As mentioned above, Korean suncreen formulas are usually super lightweight, but Lee recommends going for a chemical suncreen if you want that signature breathable feel. "Physical (mineral) sunscreen formulas tend to be less dominant in this market," she explains.

Finally, Lee says to always check for clinical backing on the listed SPF and PA ratings. "Good brands will be transparent about their testing data."

If there's one product I can't get enough of in summer, it's a tinted SPF. We all know just how important it is to apply SPF on a daily basis (yes, even if the sun isn't shining), and a tinted SPF is such a great product as it combines a facial sunscreen with a light, glowy makeup base. I mean, let's face it, none of us wants to be slathering on heavy foundation in the warmer weather, so a tinted SPF is the perfect alternative. As you can see, I'm a big fan of this product. So, you can imagine my excitement when I logged into work a couple of months ago and saw an email with the subject line "Merit's First Tinted SPF." If you've been reading my articles for a while, then you'll know that I use my Merit Beauty products daily. Yes, this brand is the ultimate minimalist beauty brand with a range of essentials that will enable you to have a glowing makeup look in ten minutes or under. While Merit does have some complexion products on offer, it has just launched its very first tinted SPF. And despite only launching today, it's already been making waves.

As a matter of fact, this product had a waiting list of over 20,000 people, so I think it's safe to say that we can expect a sell-out. As a beauty editor, I was lucky enough to get my hands on the product prior to the launch, and I've already been busy putting it through its paces. Keen to hear my thoughts? The Formula

First and foremost, it's important to know that this is not a base product containing SPF—it is an SPF that doubles as a base product. Its role as a sunscreen is its primary concern, and when it comes to SPF, the formula can be the trickiest thing to get right. As a beauty editor, I know just how important it is to have a formula that you want to wear every day, as it makes protecting your skin so much easier. After trying Merit's latest product launch out, I can confirm that this formula is 10/10.

The first thing to note is that this product is a mineral sunscreen. It uses a mineral zinc oxide active to create a physical barrier to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. It comes with a sheer tint that gives you that "my skin, but better" finish and is available in 15 different shades that cater to a wide range of skin tones—something absolutely unheard of when it comes to tinted SPFs.

I know it's already sounding pretty good, but the thing that I really want to focus on is just how lightweight this SPF is. I think we've all had negative experiences with greasy, oily SPFs in the past, but this oil-free, silicone-free and non-comedogenic formula is as light as air. In fact, it's so light that you might forget you are even wearing anything on your face.

It's the perfect balance between a matte and glowy base, and it features fine natural powders that help to smooth and blur the complexion for this soft-focus finish that I am just obsessed with.

The Application

As you can imagine, applying this product is as simple as can be. The lightweight formula practically melts into the skin and blends beautifully to give that second-skin finish. I've tried using both my hands and my foundation brush to apply this to the skin, and both methods deliver a natural-looking, glowing base.

Now, as with all SPF products, it's important to reapply throughout the day. The brand recommends reapplying the product every two hours or after physical activity or exposure to water. If I'm only wearing this product, then I do find it easy to reapply. However, when I'm wearing other makeup on top, I find that my skin can get a little cakey after reapplication, so I recommend investing in a good SPF spray instead.

It's also important to make sure that you are applying enough SPF for adequate protection. Don't be shy when it comes to using this product, as you want to make sure that it's doing its job.

The Verdict

You can probably already tell, but I am in love with this tinted SPF. Merit products never disappoint, but the brand has outdone itself with this latest launch. I never knew that SPF could feel so good (and look so good!) and I will definitely be wearing this product on a daily basis.

While we all know the importance of wearing SPF every day, it’s still a skincare product that divides opinion. A quick survey of my friendship group ahead of writing this article revealed only two out of the six of us applied sun protection daily, with one not even applying it to her face while on holiday.

The reason? Well, there were many, however, the answer that everyone seemed to agree on was that most sun creams just didn’t feel comfortable on their skin. They felt heavy, greasy and often resulted in breakouts, leading them to skip application altogether. As a beauty editor who writes about the importance of wearing SPF regularly, I can't put into words just how important wearing SPF is, but particularly summer SPF products, when the UV index is high. So, I’m sure you can imagine my face as they broke this to me. I knew I had to spring into action.

You see, while sun protection may have gotten a bad reputation in the past, that’s no longer the case. Beauty brands have taken notice and introduced a new wave of formulas that not only deliver the sun protection we need but are also packed with other skin-loving benefits. These new-gen products combine the lightweight, skincare-ingredient-packed nature of facial serums with sun protection. These SPF serums feel ultra-lightweight on the skin, sink in quickly and leave no white cast, making the process of applying and wearing SPF no more uncomfortable than your favourite serum or moisturiser.

But, don’t just take my word for it. I spoke with consultant dermatologist, Dr Derrick Phillips, to find out everything we need to know about serum sunscreens, including if they're as effective as the cream formulas of the past. Here’s what he had to say…

What Are Serum Sunscreens?

“A serum SPF, sometimes called a ‘sunscreen serum’, is a skincare product that combines the benefits of a serum with the protection of a sunscreen,” says Dr Phillips. “Typically, they’re made of more lightweight formulas than normal SPFs, and also offer other benefits such as hydration or brightening. Serum SPFs can be used either in place of a regular serum or as the final step of your skincare regimen.”

What Are the Benefits of SPF Serums?

“There are a number of benefits of using a serum SPF,” says Dr Phillips. “SPF serums usually have less chance of leaving a white cast than traditional sunscreen formulations, because their formulations minimise the visible residue that most sunscreens are associated with. They’re also lightweight and fast-absorbing, and often contain additional ingredients that benefit the skin, such as vitamins and antioxidants. Some also include ingredients that offer additional benefits, such as helping to address premature ageing, as well as brightening and hydrating the skin.”

Are Sunscreen Serums as Effective?

“Serum SPF can be as effective as a traditional SPF formula, especially if you choose one with a high factor,” says Dr Phillips. “Like traditional SPFs, you do need to ensure you are applying and reapplying enough product to get the full UV protective benefits. Serum SPF should be the last step in your skincare routine [they are under-makeup SPFs], and applied liberally to the face and neck. They also need to be reapplied regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.’’

As a beauty editor and esthetician, I spend a lot of time preaching the importance of wearing sunscreen. Fortunately, SPFs have gone through something of an evolution in recent years, and these days I rarely meet anyone who isn't wearing one every day. From creams and sticks to serums and gels, sun cream now comes in formats to suit every skin type, tone, and concern (yes, SPFs for sensitive skin and sunscreens for dark skin do exist). They're no longer thick, chalky and clogging, but instead feel light and add glow, meaning people actually enjoy applying and wearing them.

But the big question I'm asked? How do you apply sunscreen? And, more importantly, how do you reapply it? Since most sunscreen is only effective for two hours once applied, reapplication is essential to maintain protection all day. "Sunscreen naturally wears off over time due to factors like sweating, touching your face and environmental exposure," says consultant dermatologist Emma Wedgeworth. "In addition, ‘incidental sun exposure’, the kind we get from simply being outside, walking to work or sitting by a window, can accumulate and still cause DNA damage, pigmentation and [accelerated skin] ageing. Reapplying ensures that protection stays effective, reducing long-term risk of skin cancers and premature ageing."

While it's easy to layer a serum or cream sunscreen on as the final step in your morning skincare routine before you do your makeup (there are lots of great sunscreens to wear under makeup), reapplication isn't always so easy with these formulas, especially if makeup was worn. The solution? SPF sprays, which are designed specifically for reapplication, often do double duty and help to set makeup, hydrate and cool skin in the process. I've been on the hunt to find the best SPF sprays for over a year now, and since I apply it every day, I've tried my fair share of spray-on sunscreens. My testing criteria was simple: no white cast, no sticky or greasy feel, no eye sting and no makeup disturbance throughout the day.

How Do You Use an SPF Spray?

According to Wedgeworth, SPF sprays should be used generously and evenly over the skin, making sure no areas are missed. "It’s crucial to hold the spray close enough to ensure full coverage and to rub it in afterwards for even protection—don’t just mist lightly and leave it," she adds. "For the face, it’s often best to spray it onto your hands first, then apply to avoid inhalation and ensure better coverage."

"SPF sprays offer a convenient and easy way to top up protection throughout the day, especially when you're on the go or wearing makeup," says Wedgeworth. What Are the Drawbacks of SPF Sprays?

"The main drawback is that sprays can be easily under-applied. A quick mist often doesn’t give the level of coverage or quantity needed to achieve the advertised SPF level," explains Wedgeworth. "There’s also the risk of missing areas or uneven application, and potential inhalation if used improperly on the face. Let me set the scene for you. It was a normal Monday afternoon and I was sat at my desk typing away when an email landed in my inbox offering some time with Susanne Kaufmann. 1. Over Exfoliating

First up is over exfoliating. When I asked Kaufmann which skincare mistakes she sees the most, over exfoliating was her very first answer. "If you over exfoliate, [it can be] very harsh for the skin," she explained. I used to exfoliate a lot as I suffer with dry patches on my skin, however, since using gentler products and only using these products once or twice a week, I've noticed a huge difference in how my skin looks and feels.

2. Skipping a Double Cleanse

We've all been there. It's late at night, you've been out all day and all you want to do is climb into bed so you decide to skip your double cleanse in favour of a cotton pad and a bit of micellar water. Although double cleansing isn't always necessary, Kaufmann advises thinking about how much makeup you've been wearing or where you've been travelling throughout the day when it comes to your evening skincare routine. "Here in London I always do a double cleanse," she says. "I use a cleansing oil, and a purifying gel, then a toner afterwards. I prefer to use an oil and then a gel on top."

3. Not Hydrating From the Inside

Often we are all so focused on using hydrating products in our skincare routine that we don't think about hydrating our body from the inside out. I'm definitely guilty of this and tend to ask myself why my skin is so dry when I've barely had any water that day. "It's very important to also moisturise from inside," explains Kaufmann. "Drink enough water, tea, cucumber water, everything that also helps to moisturise from inside."

4. Using Chemical Preservatives

When I asked Kaufmann if there were any skincare ingredients she actively avoided, she told me that she doesn't use products with chemical preservatives. "I've been discussing how we keep our skincare as clean as possible and [I] wouldn't use ingredients such as chemical preservatives. With regards to skincare in general, it's about not being too aggressive on the skin when choosing what products and ingredients to use."

Now I'm definitely not suggesting that you throw away all your skincare and only use products that are free from chemical preservatives from now on as I wouldn't want any products going to waste, however I do think that there is something to be said about choosing cleaner formulas when buying new skincare and being aware of what ingredients are in the products we use every single day.

5. Not Wearing Sun Protection

Last but by no means least, we've got to stop skipping our SPF. "I think the most important [step] is protection against the sun. My mum always told me to use it but sometimes you are just too lazy. [If I could go back in time] I would use a lot of sun protection." This is such a crucial step in our daily skincare routines, and not just in summer either. I wear SPF all year round in order to protect my skin from harmful rays.

The Formula

Let's get into the formula. What makes this product so incredible is its pearlescent sheen, which gives the skin the kind of glow that makes it look like you've downed two litres of water, had a facial and just emerged from the spa. It's not a skin tint or foundation, but it does have a blurring effect on application. Whilst the formula has a slight beige tint, this blends out into a transparent sheen on my skin tone.

It used to come in just one universal shade, but thankfully, Supergoop! has brought an additional three shades in the past year. They're all flexible across skin tones, but “Dawn” provides a pink pearly glow that is best for fair skin, “Sunrise” (the original shade, which I'm wearing below) provides a champagne glow for light to medium complexions. Meanwhile, “Golden Hour” has bronzy pearl that looks beautiful on medium and tan skin tones and "Sunset” provides a deep bronze glow that is perfect for deep complexions.

Is Supergoop! Glowscreen Worth It?

In my opinion, Supergoop! Glowscreen SPF 30 is 100% worth it. I find myself reaching for it most days, particularly when I don't fancy a full face of makeup but still want a bit of skin blurring and glow—ideal for when I'm running errands, heading to a workout class or going out for a walk. That being said, it works amazingly as a radiance-boosting primer underneath makeup too, helping skin look glowy whilst ensuring your foundation stays put throughout the day. As you can see, it doesn't give (or promise) coverage on its own, so I would need concealer to disguise redness and scarring, but it does impart a soft-focus effect, which blurs out minor blemishes whilst giving the skin a healthy glow.

This might not be the SPF for you if you like a matte finish or have very oily skin, but if you're all for the dewy, radiant look then I would highly recommend it. It doesn't exacerbate my acne or skin sensitivity, and it does have a moisturising quality, which works well for drier skin types too, thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid. Despite how regularly (and liberally) I apply it, a tube typically lasts me around three months. However, Supegoop! recently launched a large size (the Supergoop! Glowsscreen Jumbo SPF 30, £44) that is almost 74ml (in comparison to the standard 50ml) and works out cheaper for cost-per-wear each day.

Who What Wear UK Next in Beauty Awards 2023: Best in Supercharged Skincare Winners

Farmacy's Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm has become a mainstay in many of our judges' bathrooms since testing, for its ability to make light work of removing even the most stubborn of makeup. Its balmy plant-oil texture glides over the skin, making makeup removal fuss-free whilst delivering a healthy dose of nourishment, and the addition of papaya enzymes helps to gently exfoliate as the balm emulsifies into a luxuriously milky texture. "I loved this so much," says makeup artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis. "It's calming, smells great and is effective without any irritation."

It also captured deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger's attention. "Since trialling it, Farmacy Green Clean has become a non-negotiable in my skincare routine, replacing my previous cleanser," she says. "This luxurious–feeling balm instantly melts into an oil-like consistency and effortlessly erases my makeup (even waterproof mascara) and any impurities, leaving my skin clean and soft. Unlike so many other cleansers I’ve tried, it doesn’t strip the skin—instead, when I woke up after using it the previous evening, without having applied any products afterwards, my skin felt nourished and hydrated, and had a glow to it that I don’t usually expect to see at 6:30 in the morning," she notes, adding, "I appreciate the eco-friendly packaging and the sheer volume of product—you can really make this cleanser stretch out. You won't see any fluffy ingredients here—just the ones that are truly proven to work. 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant has become one of the brand's hero products, earning a loyal fanbase of people with oily and acne-prone skin. Formulated with 2% salicylic acid, it helps to unclog pores and reduce breakouts and blackheads, all whilst soothing the skin thanks to the addition of green tea. The lightweight toner absorbs easily without leaving a greasy residue, but imparts a subtle glow—who doesn't love both long-term and instantaneous results?

"I’ve used this religiously for years and I love it—in my opinion, nothing else compares if you’re looking to address blemish or acne-prone skin," says Who What Wear UK beauty editor Eleanor Vousden. "It’s one of the handful of acne products that really works. When used consistently, it really helps to keep breakouts at bay and clear impending spots swiftly whilst also fading scarring and pigmentation. I find it also leaves my skin really glowy, which is an added bonus."

Freelance beauty editor Mollie Burdell is also enamoured. "I already knew I loved this product. As someone with oily, blemish-prone skin, I always make sure to have a bottle of this in my skincare stash. If I’m in the midst of a breakout, I’ll use it consistently all week by sweeping it across my face with a cotton pad in the evening. It calms the redness from the breakouts, helps to dry the spots out and leaves my skin with a lovely glow."

It takes a very impressive eye treatment to win over our hard-to-please panel. However, Bioeffect's EGF Eye Serum delivered visible results that blew us all away. This powerhouse eye serum harnesses epidermal growth factors derived from barley, which work to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, brighten dark circles and plump the delicate skin around the eyes. It's also a joy to use, with a cooling rollerball applicator that depuffs as you apply, and the hydrating results are instantaneous thanks to the hyaluronic acid. In fact, it's one of the few products that made a difference to dark circles amongst our testers.

"When it came to skincare products, I always thought eye creams and serums were overhyped. That was until I tried Bioeffect's EGF Eye Serum," says Eggenberger. "The star ingredient, epidermal growth factor, is a natural protein that boosts skin-cell renewal whilst minimising fine lines and puffiness. Its hydrating power ensures a radiant look, and it's just about the only thing that can soften my dark circles."

We love a face mask for those moments when we need instant results, whether it be before a night out (or the morning after) or when our skin just needs a helping hand. Gold Collagen's Hydrogel Masks were a firm favourite amongst our judges. Unlike other sheet masks out there, these come in two sections to ensure a tailored fit to both the lower and upper face, but what's really special about them is the results they give. They left our judges' skin intensely hydrated, plumped and soothed, and were a big hit with makeup artist Mira Palmer for makeup prep.

"My face felt hydrated, soft and smooth after this. The masks are great for all face shapes because each comes in two parts, and the second-skin technology has a cooling effect on the skin, with lots of skin-loving ingredients such as pearl extract, hyaluronic acid, botanical complex and glycerine. Plus, you get four masks in a box, which is brilliant."

The masks are also ideal for those with sensitive skin. "I was unsure about trying a face mask as I have sensitive skin, but the Gold Collagen Hydrogel Mask left my skin smooth, hydrated and radiant without any redness or reaction," says Who What Wear UK commerce writer Florrie Alexander.

With more and more people becoming aware of the importance that SPF plays in our skincare routines to defend against the damaging effects of the sun, it's all the more important that our SPF is one we want to wear religiously. Every. Single. Day. Beauty Pie has knocked it out of the park with its Featherlight UVA/UVB SPF 50. Featherlight by name and featherlight by nature, this silky lotion is undetectable on the skin. It sinks in fast—without leaving a white cast, FYI—and offers comprehensive broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays with SPF 50, whilst priming the skin for makeup perfectly. Tanning your face can feel like yet another additional step in your routine, so we love than Tan-Luxe has streamlined the process with its hyaluronic acid serum that's infused with a gradual tan formula that comes in two shades: Gradual for fair skin and Deep for those who require a deeper-looking tan. You can use more drops for more glow and maintain the results by applying daily. Perfect for tanning aficionados and beginners alike, this tanning serum delivers a streak-free tan without the tell-tale DHA smell that's often synonymous with self-tanners. "This is a really lovely product that combines a facial tanner with serum and a mega hydration boost," says Who What Wear UK managing editor Poppy Nash. "It was really easy to apply and I like that you don't have to add drops into a moisturiser and mix. It feels like you’re getting all the benefits of skincare with a bonus tan. I used it once my holiday tan had faded and was really happy with the results. I’ll re-purchase!"

Hyperpigmentation can be a tricky concern to treat, but Dermatica's Clarifying Azelaic Acid 20% Cream delivered incredible results for our judges, working to reduce dark spots and blemishes alike. The 20% azelaic-acid formula helps to brighten hyperpigmentation to encourage an even-toned complexion, however, our judges noted how very gentle the formula is, particularly on sensitive skin. The efficacious formula also contains squalane and glycerin, which work in tandem to hydrate and reinforce the skin's barrier.

"I have suffered with hyperpigmentation for as long as I can remember, and many products promise to eliminate this, but very few have actually managed it," says Who What Wear UK social media editor Joy Ejaria. "As someone with sensitive skin, I usually steer clear of products that contain acids. However, this one is different, because one of the benefits of azelaic acid is that it combats inflammation. There was a noticeable difference in my skin’s texture after first use, and within a few weeks I noticed the stubborn dark spots left behind by pimples had faded away," she says, adding, "What’s great about this cream is that despite the high percentage of acid, it doesn’t interact with other actives, and you can use your usual moisturiser after it."

Not all lash serums are created equal. Uklash's Eyelash Serum was a standout for our judges, who saw incredible results in the length, thickness and health of their eyelashes. Enriched with peptides, pro vitamin B5 and green tea extract, the ingredients work in tandem to keep lashes in their growth phase for longer, resulting in beautiful, long lashes that are noticeably thicker after a couple of months of use. However, our judges began to see results after just a few weeks. There is also a sensitive version for those who have easily irritated skin.

"This stuff is simply amazing," says Who What Wear UK ecommerce analyst, Sophie Cookson. "I was actually already using it before testing began for the Next in Beauty Awards, following almost a year of eyelash extensions. I started to notice my short, stubby and sparse lashes becoming longer, stronger and glossier after around three weeks of nightly application. I’ve recommended it to so many people."

A lip treatment has to be impressive to be offered a permanent position in our handbags, but Ultra Violette has become a mainstay amongst our editors. With a choice of tinted balms, SPF 50 and a cocktail of skin-loving ingredients such as cocooning shea butter and nourishing cacao seed butter, our testing panel loved the finish of this cushioning balm that doubles up as a luxe gloss.

"This feels and looks like more of a lip gloss than a balm, and it works nicely with other lip products," says Who What Wear UK editor-in-chief Hannah Almassi. "It moisturises for the whole day, and I found myself repeatedly coming back to this as a subtle, glossy lip balm that makes for a great replacement for lipstick or other products. It stays on for approximately three to four hours, too."

When we're contemplating spending upwards of £100 on a luxury moisturiser, we want to see a serious return on investment. And ARgENTUM Apothecary's La Potion Infinie ticked all the boxes. From opening the tarot-inspired jar to the visible results on the skin, it's a luxurious experience from start to finish.

"I know beauty is found within, but I love this tarot-themed casing and apothecary-inspired vessel—it all feels very special indeed," says Eggenberger. "The texture of this cream feels incredibly luxurious, which you’d naturally expect from such an investment. It can feel quite rich on first use, but my skin drank it up and I was left with a velvety finish which my makeup looked better layered on top of," she adds.

"The formula also boasts colloidal silver, which as research tells me, is actual microscopic flakes of pure silver that act as an antioxidant, working hard to erase fine lines, tighten wrinkles and aid in settling pigmentation. Bougie? Yes. Brilliant? Also yes," says Eggenberger. "I was particularly impressed at how it softened the lines that have started to become more defined on my neck—an area I know a lot of us want to see results in. I get toxin injections on my frown lines every nine months or so, but after using this, I'm not sure I'll need my next top-up."

A truly great makeup remover is hard to come by, but Tatcha's The Camellia Cleansing Oil was proclaimed a game-changer by our judges. The silky oil, containing Japanese camellia oil, effortlessly melts away makeup (and even waterproof mascara), emulsifying into a skin-softening milk that leaves the skin cleansed, but never compromised. How very clever of Tatcha to revolutionise the chore of taking off your makeup into a sensorial ritual.

"Tatcha is renowned for its luxurious textures that are a joy to use, and this oil cleanser is no exception," says Vousden. "I love this so much that I actually look forward to taking my makeup off in the evening. The silky oil removes everything (even waterproof mascara and heavy makeup), emulsifying into a milky texture upon contact with water that leaves skin perfectly clean and ready for a second cleanse. It’s by far the best oil cleanser I’ve ever tried. Hands down."

With the importance of the skin barrier having become more widely acknowledged in recent years, we applaud Cultured Biome One Rich Cream for its ability to repair, restore and soothe compromised skin—doctors and editors amongst are judging panel were singing its praises.

"I like this cream very much," says cosmetic doctor Dr Sophie Shotter. "It delivered a surprising amount of hydration for what felt like a light, non-greasy formulation. It absorbed easily and my skin looked more hydrated as well as feeling it."

It also received high praise from Who What Wear UK copy editor, Georgia Seago, who found that it was ideal for her psoriasis. "A dream moisturiser for someone with chronically dry, sensitised skin. I sometimes get��psoriasis on my face, and this doesn’t irritate my skin at all. In fact, it soothes and calms the dry, inflamed patches whilst feeding the microbiome and fortifying the skin barrier—exactly what you need when you’re dealing with an inflammatory skin condition," she says. "And even though it’s a rich cream (which I usually avoid for fear of clogged pores), it leaves me glowing rather than greasy."

Some products are so iconic and efficacious, they barely need an introduction. One of those is Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Serum Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex, which scored exceptionally well across our judging panel. With its ability to plump lines, firm the skin, hydrate and even skin tone overnight, it seems there is nothing this serum can't do. The soothing and fortifying formula sinks into skin quickly, delivering visible results—fast. And the fact that it works across all skin types and age ranges plays into its universal appeal.

"An all-round favourite, this softens the skin and sinks in well. It's oil-free, making it great for oily skin types," says freelance beauty editor Ata-Owaji Victor. "It can be used as a treatment serum after cleansing and before moisturising, and whilst it’s touted as a nighttime product, I loved using this serum during the day to stave off dehydration," she adds.

Eggenberger was also hugely impressed by this serum's results, and she even said she'd bathe in this serum if she could. "Okay, I get it now—Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair is truly a game-changer! I first tried this in my mid-twenties, when, let’s face it, I probably didn’t need it. Now, giving it a whirl in my mid-thirties, I've noticed a remarkable improvement in my skin's texture and radiance since incorporating it into my nightly routine," she says. "It's lightweight, non-greasy, and leaves my skin feeling incredibly refreshed and my fine lines all but erased. Plus, a little goes a long way, and I enjoy the precision of the droplet dispenser. A must-have for anyone looking to wake up with glowing, revitalised, hydrated skin. If I could, I’d bathe in the stuff."

With so many retinoid products on the market, it can be tricky to find an effective formulation that works for most skin types. However, Medik8's Crystal Retinal range was universally adored by our judging panel, and boasts impressive credentials, treating concerns such as wrinkles and acne. Retinal (a form of retinoid under the vitamin A umbrella), its star ingredient, is 11 times more effective than retinol, and is far gentler on the skin, meaning less irritation and making it suitable even for sensitive skin. The product is available in progressive strengths, so you can find a concentration that works for your skin before progressing up the ladder as your skin adjusts.

"I’ve used Medki8’s Crystal Retinal on and off for 18 months. As a long-time sufferer of mild acne, it’s the only product that I’ve found that truly makes an impact, or rather a reduction, to the blemishes on my face, without any severe dryness or other side effects," says Rhys-Evans. "There have been moments where I’ve tried other kinds of retinol serums or treatments, but this is the one I always come back to."

Natasha Ndlovu, creative consultant and influencer, loved the results and is planning to step up to the higher strength with her next tube. "I've heard good things about this brand and I'm slowly increasing my usage of this retinal," she says. "So far, my skin is reacting well to it."

Highly Commended Supercharged Skincare

Our testers whole-heartedly agreed that CeraVe's Hydrating Cleanser deserved a special shout-out. After all, this is the cleanser you'll find in pretty much every beauty-lover's bathroom—everyone from dermatologists to editors love it for its effective formula and affordable price tag.

"This cleanser does what it says—gentle yet effective cleansing," says consultant dermatologist Dr Alia Ahmed. "Skin doesn’t feel tight afterwards, and it effectively removes impurities, dirt and sweat. The addition of HA and ceramides protects and restores skin hydration, and it's also a very good price point. The only downside is that it doesn't remove makeup."

"I love this cleanser, it has been part of my skincare routine for over a year now," adds Who What Wear UK shopping editor, Remy Farrell. "The texture is extremely lightweight. I've used some cleansers which can cause irritation but CeraVe soothes it out."

"This is such a great, quick exfoliating treatment," says brand founder and creative director Estée Lalonde. "I love that it has a slight physical exfoliating texture as well as a chemical component—I love a quick result!"

One of the first brands to bring ingredient-led skincare to the masses at affordable price points, The Ordinary continues to wow us with results-driven products that won't break the bank. Mutli-Peptide Eye Serum is a standout that we wanted to highly commend. Designed to address fine lines, dark circles and puffiness, the serum texture melts into the skin to plump and cool on contact, leaving the eye area revitalised and refreshed—for less than £20.

"This is a fantastic product," says Lalonde. "I love the texture because it’s great to use in the morning under makeup."

"It’s a correctional SPF, reducing existing dark spots whilst preventing new ones from occurring. Having sun-kissed skin is one of the main reasons I love summer so much. A few freckles across my nose, a bit of a tan on my forehead and cheeks, and hopefully fewer spots after having immersed my face in saltwater. Unfortunately, however, this time of year is the most dangerous for our skin—we all know how damaging too much of the sun's ultraviolet light can be, causing hyperpigmentation, severe dryness and of course, increasing the risk of developing skin cancer. But back to my regime. After years of trialing different products, I think I have finally perfected the best routine for my skin during summer, and all the products come from BEAUTY PIE. It's a quick and easy three-step routine that I do each morning, especially diligently in the spring and summer months. The greatest part about it is that the products are multifaceted; with a 3-in-1 moisturiser and an SPF that also doubles up as a primer, I save myself money, time and energy (things that I don't tend to have much of). But instead of just explaining it, I thought I'd show you. So without further ado, here's my fail-safe, three-step regime that will help your harness that summer glow in the safest way. 

The first step in the process is all about hydration, because rehydrating the skin after sun exposure is vital. Shinkai Electrolyte Drench is like a mammoth glass of water for the face. Hailing from Japan, its J-Beauty (Japanese Beauty) formula is all about simplicity, or "skinimalism". The antithetical answer to K-Beauty (Korean Beauty), which centres around a lengthy, multi-step routine, this 3-in-1 deep hydrating gel-cream is a moisturiser, serum and mask all in one.

I apply this cool, silky gel every morning to clean skin. It's thick without being too thick or sticky, and I let it sink in for a minute or two before applying my SPF. In the evenings, I also use it at the end of my routine as a mask to add an extra nourishing layer, and then I let it absorb through the night. A mineral-infused moisturising gel, it's perfect for those with dry skin, but doesn't cause issues for those with oily skin (which many creams and oil-based moisturisers can do), making it a great option for all skin types. 

Step two: prime and protect. Honestly, this is the most important step in the routine. No matter your skin type and how prone to burning you are, when it comes to your face, factor 50 is the best way to go. Unfortunately, many SPF 50 moisturisers and sunscreens, whether they're for the body, face or both, are often thick, sticky and difficult to apply. Staying true to its name, its ultra-lightweight consistency is easy to apply and absorbs quickly into the skin. Because it's been designed for priming the face for makeup, it has a soft, dewy feel that ensures your foundation, BB cream, skin tint (or whatever you use for your base) blends into the skin beautifully. 

As a person with acne-prone, slightly dry skin, I will occasionally have flaky patches which cling to my makeup. However, this primer's consistency really helps to blur and blend my foundation and concealer. As with the Shinkai moisturiser, its formula rehydrates whilst it calms inflammation and helps heal skin damage. Now, that's what I call multifaceted beauty. 

The final step in my regime is to add some light makeup to create a glowy, "no-makeup makeup" look. Whilst I believe everyone's skin is perfect without it, I like to look at using makeup as a way to refine and enhance what I already have. As mentioned, the Featherlight SPF primer is the ideal base for whatever makeup you want to wear, and in the summer months I tend to go for lighter coverage, so I'll top the SPF primer with a lightweight foundation or concealer.

I colour-match this with my skin, and then use BEAUTY PIE's Keep This Compact & Awesome Bronze Powder Bronzer to add some glow. I go in below my cheekbones and around my forehead, also adding a little on my nose, cheeks and neck, so I'm not just adding a little contour, I'm also giving myself an all-over sun-kissed look. The powder has a matte, blurred finish, blends beautifully and gives medium-to-full coverage, leaving a very natural look to the skin. Plus, it contains hyaluronic acid, squalane and ceramides to keep the skin hydrated. 

After I've given my skin that bronzed glow, I finish off with my lips. Then, I layer on Wondergloss Collagen Lip Oil + for some shine and a little colour. Here, I'm wearing the shade Spicy Pink. Unlike other glosses, I find this one to be super hydrating, and instead of being sticky (I hate when my hair sticks to my gloss), it's balmy and rich. I love how the sheeny finish catches that golden-hour light, making my lips look plumped and dewy.

As a beauty editor, I'm fortunate in that I get to speak to the very best experts in the field on all things skincare. Choosing the best SPF for your face is paramount. With the sun's rays posing a risk of skin cancer and premature ageing (with UVA rays contributing between 80-90%), finding an SPF you want to wear every single day is crucial. Yes, really. Ask any dermatologist or skin expert, and they'll tell you that it is essential to wear SPF year-round—not just when it's hot and sunny outside, or you're on holiday, but during the winter and cloudy weather too, as UVA and UVB rays can make their way through cloud and even windows. In a nutshell, it's the single most important product to use to look after your skin.

SPF, Broad-Spectrum, UVA and UVB: What's the Difference?

With so many SPFs around, it can be tricky finding one that ticks all the boxes, or even knowing what makes a good one. And it depends on whether you're looking for an SPF for mature skin, an SPF for dark skin or a sunscreen for sensitive skin. We all have different skin types and preferences when it comes to SPF for our face, and finding one that you enjoy using is paramount. You'd be forgiven for thinking that you only need to worry about SPF for summer, but we actually need to wear it year-round to protect our skin. Not just to prevent hyperpigmentation, melasma and sun damage, but more importantly, to help prevent skin cancer.

The first thing to consider is the SPF (sun protection factor) and the broad-spectrum rating. Sunscreens with SPF 30 or 50 are best, as they block around 97 and 98% of UVB rays (the ones that are responsible for skin burning), respectively, when applied properly.

However, SPF alone will not protect against UVA rays (these are the rays that age the skin). So, it's also important to consider if the sunscreen is "broad spectrum". You'll usually see this as a rating between one and five stars, with five offering the highest UVA protection. These are the key things to bear in mind when choosing your daily SPF.

Chemical vs. Physical SPF

You might see that some sunscreens are labelled as either "chemical" or "physical" (or sometimes "mineral"). This is important to consider when finding the best SPF for your face. Both work to shield against the sun, but in different ways.

"I prefer physical or mineral SPFs made of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as they don’t photo-degrade in the sun like chemical sunscreens and are much less likely to cause skin irritation," says consultant dermatologist Dr Natalia Spierings. "But they can be hard to use from a cosmetic perspective as they can be a bit chalky and leave a white cast," she adds, which can be tricky on darker skin tones. Thankfully, mineral formulations have come a long way, but you can also consider chemical SPFs. "Chemical sunscreens are perfectly adequate but do need to be reapplied every two to three hours in constant sun exposure to maintain the sun-protective effect."

Mineral SPFs are generally considered less irritating than chemical ones, which may be beneficial if your skin is sensitive or prone to conditions such as eczema. "This varies from person to person," says Dr Spierings. "The most important thing is finding a sunscreen that you like to use and doesn’t irritate your skin or make it feel uncomfortable."

How Much SPF Should You Apply, and How Often?

OK, so how do we apply SPF? "What is more important than SPF level is that enough volume is applied—so 2.5ml for the entire face, neck and ears," says Dr Spierings. This roughly equates to the length of two fingers. In terms of re-applying, you should ideally top up your sunscreen every couple of hours. Reapplying over makeup can be difficult, but you can apply your sunscreen to a makeup sponge and pat it into the skin, or call upon spray SPFs for when you need to reapply on the go.

However, Dr Spierings notes that the best form of sun protection is to physically stay out of the sun, so seek shade, cover your skin with clothing and wear a hat and sunglasses, too. And importantly, she adds, "Always see your GP straight away if you notice a change in a mole. If it is new, has gotten larger, darker, is bleeding or has in any way changed at all, see your GP."

I’m a religious SPF wearer, so I’ve tried a lot during my time as a beauty journalist. My skin is combination, with more oiliness and prone to breakouts in my T-zone. I also have sensitive skin and eyes, so I usually reach for SPFs that I know are gentle and won’t sting.

On first impression, the texture of Beauty Pie Featherlight UVA/UVB SPF 50 reminds me a lot of La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios SPF; its watery, lotion-like consistency sinks into the skin so well, and although it's white when it comes out of the nozzle, it blends in undetectably into the skin without leaving a cast. No vigorous rubbing is required here. Instead, it makes my skin look hydrated and with a radiant finish that doesn’t feel heavy or tacky.

I experimented with wearing different moisturisers and foundations with this, and I’m pleased to report that it didn’t pill—it seemed to get on well with everything I wore underneath or on top. Beauty Pie touts this as a makeup primer too, and I wholeheartedly agree. Anything I applied on top went on like butter. For this reason, I can get on board with wearing this daily. As it's a lotion, it sinks in well, which is handy for top-ups; however, if you’re looking to reapply over makeup, then I’d recommend going for an SPF mist so as not to ruin your hard work.

It also didn’t upset my sensitive-prone skin or make my eyes sting, and I like that it offers both UVA and UVB protection with SPF 50. It didn’t exacerbate the slicker areas of my skin or cause breakouts either, which is a big win. I really can’t think of any cons to report, and I like that it has the addition of extracts and antioxidants that work to protect your skin, too. I know I’ll be buying another tube when this runs out, so it’s a 10/10 from me.

When I found out I was trying this La Roche-Posay SPF, I was really excited. I’d heard a lot about it from friends and wanted to see if it actually lived up to the hype. The short answer is yes, it does. Firstly (though least importantly), I like that the small bottle is really easy to slip into my handbag when heading out for the day. And as for the actual product, the light formula feels soft and refreshing but also ensures you get the highest UV coverage.

The packaging calls this an invisible fluid, and it really is. The light serum feels almost water-like as it glides easily over your skin, and it doesn’t pool in the crevices of your eyes or around smile lines. As someone who has acne-prone skin, nothing about this formula gives me the fear of incoming breakouts—it simply feels hydrating and moisturising, which every skin type needs. My skin can also sit on the sensitive side, meaning even the gentlest eye-makeup removers can leave me with red, blotchy skin. But even whilst rubbing this in, my skin seemed pretty pleased.

Though the serum is white, it blends seamlessly to create a transparent layer that doesn't leave a cast behind and quickly absorbs without any stickiness, although I always give about ten minutes for my SPF to fully sink in before moving on to makeup. At this time of year, I tend to steer clear of heavy foundations and celebrate my skin in all its glory, but knowing I’ve got a hard-working SPF on top ensures my skin is protected.

Also, the lightweight formula means you can easily reapply on the go without worrying if your mirrorless application has left you with white marks where you’ve missed a spot, as the formula seems to dissolve with even the gentlest swipe. Coming in at only £21, the price feels fair for all the benefits. Yes, it's a small bottle, but it goes a surprisingly long way. I have to say, I’ve been using it every day since it arrived, and I have no intention of stopping.

When it comes to finding an SPF for my face, I’m extremely picky. Since it’s something I’ll be layering into my skincare routine most days of the year, it needs to be really good. Luckily, my skin isn’t too sensitive, so it can deal with a lot of different formulations, but in summer, it can lean towards being quite oily around the T-zone. This means I’m always on the lookout for an SPF that doesn’t feel too heavy or cloggy, blocking up my pores and immediately making me break out. Until now, I’ve been a regular Skinceuticals SPF user, but since I’m a fan of Dr Barbara Sturm’s other skincare products, I was excited to test its famous Sun Drops.

The brand’s SPF 50 Sun Drops have been one of its core products for a while, but it has also launched an SPF 30 version, so I had the chance to test both. So, let’s start with the formula. Both have a really nice, lightweight, serum-like texture. The idea is that you can layer this under (or instead of) moisturiser as a serum step, or add the drops to your regular moisturiser and apply them together.

As well as the SPF protection, the formulations also include purslane (Dr Sturm’s favoured super-power anti-ageing ingredient that you’ll find in a lot of her other well-loved serums), hyaluronic acid for skin hydration, and vitamin E. The bottle also states that these SPF drops are particularly suitable for sensitive skin.

The best thing about Dr Sturm’s Sun Drops? There’s absolutely no white cast in sight. Even the heavier SPF 50 melted into the skin like a regular serum would—both when applied alone and with moisturiser—yet I was confident in the protective coverage. Expectedly, the SPF 50 did feel a little stickier on the skin than the SPF 30 after application on its own, but I found this was neutralised when I applied it mixed into my moisturiser (currently, Weleda Skin Food Light, if you're wondering).

Despite this, there was no pilling at all when I layered moisturiser and light makeup (Glossier Skin Tint) on top. Sun Drops is water-based, so just try to avoid layering on any oil-based products, and you should be fine. There was also no stinging or sensitivity in the eyes with either version, and both (especially the SPF 30) left a seriously good glow on my skin. I had to add a little mattifying powder to my chin and T-zone with the SPF 50, but the SPF 30 left such a nice, soft finish, and you can definitely feel the skincare benefits as well as the sun protection.

During testing, I reapplied the drops a few times throughout the day and found that the SPF 30 did sit better over makeup. Personally, after trying both, I think I’d prefer to use the lower SPF and reapply more regularly, as it had a much more lightweight texture overall, and I would be less worried about build-up and breakouts with use over a longer period of time. But this comes down to a really personal choice over which level of SPF you prefer to use.

The only drawback, as with all of Dr Barbara Sturm’s luxury products, is the price. 30ml of the SPF 50 Sun Drops comes in at £125, which is a pretty hefty price to pay for a product you’ll need to regularly use and replace. However, the science behind the doctor-led brand is what you pay for, and the skincare benefits, plus the lightweight formulation and ease of introducing such an important product into my daily routine, make it worth the investment, in my opinion.

I always start my reviews off with "As a Black woman…", but on this occasion, it's actually a pretty relevant thing to mention. I’ve tried plenty of sunscreens but had yet to find one that didn’t leave behind the dreaded white cast. I can’t remember when I discovered Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen SPF 30, but my life truly changed that day.

I promise you, the brand isn't kidding with the "unseen" part. The velvety gel texture of this sunscreen is surprisingly easy to apply and requires little to no effort to rub in. It’s so weightless that when applied, it truly feels like there's nothing on my face. This sunscreen earns bonus points from me because it also acts like a primer for days I decide to wear makeup.

A little goes a long way—I start with a pea-sized amount, which I dot around my face before rubbing in. The tube packaging allows me to only push out the quantity I need, which is great. My one negative point about this sunscreen is how shiny it leaves my skin after use.

I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve been severely lacking when it comes to incorporating a daily SPF into my skincare routine. As one of those people who, embarrassingly, relies on the sun protection factor of my foundation for any sort of protection, it was no surprise that a recent skin scan showed a fair amount of sun damage. Having a dark skin tone may hide the damage from the naked eye, but as I want to take my long-term skin health more seriously, I’ve been keen to invest in an SPF that goes the distance (without being a heavy-duty white liquid). Enter, Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen.

On holiday I tend to rely on refreshing sprays like La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios Protection Face Mist or Ultrasun's Sports Spray formula, but as far as the Aqua Water Essence goes as an introduction to Bioré sunscreen, I’m immediately on board. It’s reassuring to use a product designed by skincare experts (and who didn’t start their beauty journey with Bioré's pore strips or charcoal scrub?), and the first thing that impressed me is the finish of the formula. A cooling, silky lotion that glides on and leaves a clear base, it doesn’t leave behind the tacky residue that you’d expect from a sunscreen. Light, fresh and breathable, it dries to a matte finish that I can easily apply makeup on top of without fear of a greasy layer forming. So far, so good.

Next, a moment for the SPF protection. I opted for the factor-50 coverage and was pleasantly surprised to find that there’s also a dose of hyaluronic acid in there for maximum skin hydration—a must for my combination skin. For those looking for something a little less substantial, there’s also the Aqua Rich Weightless Moisturiser that comes in factor 30, but having tested both side by side, there’s very little difference between the two.

After applying the Watery Essence on clean skin underneath my foundation, I love how this sunscreen looks and feels more like a serum or primer than a traditional cream. I will add that there's a light, citrusy fragrance that I personally love, but it could be an issue for those with sensitive skin. Having said that, there's little chance of stinging or watery eyes with this water-based, gentle formula. It's giving holiday skin in a bottle, especially underneath a glowy base.

There were ups and downs in the weather whilst I was testing this, and on the particularly overcast days, I only applied the lotion once in the morning, but I felt confident that being locked in under makeup kept the SPF set until the evening when I took everything off. With no breakouts or clogged pores, the breathable layer is just the right amount to protect without caking, which is a definite win. And at this price, it's the perfect option to throw into your makeup bag or carry-on. It's an easy, breezy sunscreen that I find myself dropping into conversation with anyone who asks why my skin looks so good. I'm impressed.

As someone who prioritises sun protection above all else (I'm Scottish, and my skin can flare with a mere glance at the sun), I have a list of key factors I look for in a facial SPF. I have combination skin that is prone to occasional dryness and sensitivity, so finding a sunscreen that doesn’t exacerbate—and, if I’m lucky, even addresses—these concerns is essential for me. Needless to say, I was very excited to try SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defence SPF 50.

A lotion-type sunscreen that comes in a 30ml bottle, the formula feels lightweight and smooth. When applied, the sunscreen has a smooth and non-greasy finish. It blends seamlessly into my skin, providing a natural appearance without any residue or shine. I appreciate that it doesn't leave a white cast, which can be a common issue with some sunscreens I’ve tried in the past, especially for those with darker skin tones.

With its SPF 50 protection, this sunscreen provides high-level sun defence, shielding my skin from both harmful UVA and UVB rays. It gives me peace of mind knowing that my skin is well-protected, especially since I have specific concerns surrounding discolouration. One aspect that sets this sunscreen apart is the inclusion of additional ingredients and benefits. It contains a combination of advanced UV filters that work synergistically to provide broad-spectrum protection.

Additionally, it includes vitamin E, known for its antioxidant properties, which helps neutralise free radicals and protect the skin from environmental damage—something which anyone who lives in a big city should be looking for in their skincare. Again, unlike other SPFs I’ve tried, I experienced zero stinging or sensitivity around the eyes when using this sunscreen, which is a huge relief, as you want to be able to apply it as close to the eyes as possible for maximum protection.

When it comes to wearing makeup on top of this sunscreen, my experience is a wholly positive one. It acts as a good base for foundation, and pilling—my pet peeve—is non-existent. In fact, my makeup looks smoother than it ever did, and I find that my concealer actually goes farther when layered over it. I’ve reapplied it on top of makeup too, and it goes on with ease and without compromising the paint job I’ve spent time on earlier in the day, though it must be said that I do prefer a dewy base, so I’m not sure how reapplication would fare on top of matte-finish makeup.

Whilst this sunscreen ticks many, many of my boxes, there are a few things you may wish to consider: The 30ml size may not last long if you use it consistently (as you rightly should be), and £50 isn’t an inconsiderable amount of money. However, in my opinion, the quality and performance of the product justify the cost. Its high level of sun protection, lightweight formula, non-greasy finish and compatibility with my existing makeup routine make it a no-brainer for me. A new beauty-bag must-have, without a doubt.

Sunscreen is a really important part of my skincare routine. My skin, especially on my face, is sensitive to sunlight due to years of acne medication, which can cause patches of pigmentation in the sun. My dermatologist told me that it is essential (for everybody) to reapply sunscreen every two hours for maximum protection against sun damage. This applies year-round, and even if you are inside all day.

Previously, I hadn't been able to find the right SPF that sits well above my makeup when I reapply it, without it making my face greasy and removing some of the makeup. This is where Preen Screen SPF 50 Reapplication Mist from Ultra Violette comes in. This spray formula is incredibly easy to reapply over makeup; you don’t need a mirror, it doesn’t leave a white cast, and it's small enough to carry in your bag. The result is a soft sheen on the skin that feels dewy and lightweight.

It also includes vitamins E and C, niacinamide and bisabolol to provide anti-inflammatory properties. I think these ingredients go a long way towards helping the spray feel refreshing to touch up with during the day. It's worth noting that I've found this can cause (temporary) stinging in the eyes if you accidentally get some product in there, but the recommended way to apply it is to close your eyes and spray in the shape of an "X" and then a "Y" to make sure your face is fully covered. Keep your eyes closed for a few seconds after you've sprayed. It also has a fairly strong alcohol smell initially, but this subsides quickly.

With summer holidays and another heatwave around the corner, I think this is such an easy solution for reapplying SPF over makeup on the go. If I didn’t have it already, I would definitely buy this. It is slightly expensive for an SPF, but there aren’t many over-makeup SPF mists on the market with the level of ingredients that this one from Ultra Violette includes.

As I’ve mentioned, my skin is oilier in my T-zone, so some SPFs can feel heavy or clog my skin. That said, I still love a dewy finish, so I was intrigued by The Inkey List’s formula, which contains polyglutamic acid (a really hydrating ingredient) with glycerin and squalene, and promises a dewy result. The cream-gel formula feels instantly cooling and hydrating on the skin, quenching with moisture and with a sun protection factor of 30. It comes out of the tube white, but this does disappear after rubbing it into the skin.

I found that whilst it was hydrating, this did leave a slightly tacky film on the skin. This wasn’t necessarily an issue for me, but if you hate anything too cloying on the skin, this might be a deal-breaker. I did think that the slight stickiness would make it great for makeup prep; however, I found that it repelled foundation in my T-zone when I applied it over the top of the product. I noticed that some other reviewers experienced this with their foundation too, so it’s always worth checking if your foundation is oil or water-based, as oil and water repel one another and cause separation on the skin. I found that letting my moisturiser and SPF sink in for a good 10 minutes before applying foundation helped. However, on non-makeup days, it was easy to top up, and I liked that it made my skin look dewy and glowy.

Whilst this didn’t irritate my sensitive skin, it did sting my eyes a little, so for that reason, I couldn’t commit to using it every day. However, if you want an SPF with great hydration at an affordable price point and you don’t typically wear foundation, I’d recommend this. The dealbreaker for me was having to wait for it to sink into my skin before applying makeup and it stinging my eyes, so I docked a couple of points.

As previously mentioned, I'm having acne treatment, and sunscreen is the one part of my routine that I will never skip. It was drilled into me by my dermatologist when I started taking Roaccutane, as it makes the skin at higher risk of damage. Since stopping the medication, my skin has remained slightly sensitive and is prone to pigmentation. So when shopping for a new sunscreen, my must-have criteria are a factor 50 rating with high UVB and UVA protection. I was excited to try Garnier’s Super UV Daily Invisible Face Serum, as it has all the qualities I look for in an SPF, plus it's affordable and designed for sensitive skin.

The texture is a lightweight serum, gliding onto the skin on application, and when it sets, it feels secure on your face, unlike some other sunscreens that can feel oily or greasy. I was impressed that it was actually invisible on my skin and that it contains ingredients that give an extra level of protection against pollution.

It's a great product to layer under makeup—there isn't any pilling—but when applying skincare, I would recommend waiting 10 minutes for your other products to settle before you apply the sunscreen, as following it up any sooner can cause some pilling.

This SPF has now fully replaced my old sunscreen. My skin reacts well to the ingredients, and the price point is low enough that I'm not breaking the bank with each application. I’m giving it an 8/10, just because I felt a tiny bit of sensitivity when I first started applying it, but with regular use, my skin has adjusted to the product.

Like all beauty editors, I am incredibly fussy when it comes to my selected facial sunscreen—but I would never dream of leaving the house without applying it. I have oily, acne-prone skin that can also become dry and irritated if it doesn’t get enough hydration. I also have incredibly sensitive eyes. My criteria for a great facial SPF are simple: it has to feel luxurious, have a lightweight but hydrating finish, and it should never irritate my eyes. It shouldn’t be that hard, and yet it is. I find the majority of facial SPFs turn my skin greasy, clog my pores, sting my eyes and cause my makeup to slip all over my face. So if you hate SPF, trust me, I hear you.

However, throughout my career, I have dedicated a lot of time to testing every facial sunscreen that has come my way, and I have found a small number of facial SPFs that tick all of my boxes—and have subsequently become very cherished. No7 Future Renew UV Defence Shield SPF 50 (£25) is one of them.

Like a fair few sunscreens on this list, it has a super-runny, thin, liquid texture that spreads over skin like silk and sinks in with unparalleled ease. The main difference between this and others, however, is that it delivers a lotion-like hydration that is better than any other I have tried. It doesn't create an unwanted sheen or greasy film, but it doesn't dry down matte or skin-like in the same way the La Roche-Posay Anthelios formula does (my other favourite, SPF, by the way). It delivers a moisturiser-like glow and plumpness without the rich texture—a true feat.

Beyond the high-protection SPF coverage and its beautiful hydration, it's also worth mentioning that this formula contains peptides that encourage skin to look like its most glowing, plump and youthful self in the long term. It doesn't sting my eyes, and it can be used across all skin tones without risk of leaving any chalky cast—seriously, it's the whole shebang.

The only situation I can possibly think of that might involve someone not liking this product is if your skin is particularly dry and you want a richer, more creamy and buttery sunscreen to use in place of your daily moisturiser. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, your skin is really oily, and you want a totally matte finish. But if you want a hydrated, healthy-looking, skin-like finish—this is it. My only desire? That the packaging felt a little more luxe.

I've spent many years trying to find an SPF that works for my skin type, but I might have finally done it. This Elemis SPF has a super creamy consistency and blends into my complexion in seconds, giving a totally invisible finish. It sits well under makeup and gives my complexion a boost on those days when it's looking a little dull.

The clever formula helps to protect against UVA and UVB rays and also defends against fine lines, dark spots and pigmentation caused by the sun's rays. How does it do this, I hear you ask? It contains an advanced blend of encapsulated UV filters that, when applied, spread evenly over the skin. Of course, it doesn't stop there. The formula also contains the brand's patented Padina pavonica algae extract that works to deliver a hit of moisture to the skin while visibly plumping the complexion.

I love it as the SPF gives a really dewy, radiant finish. Whether I'm having a makeup-free day or I am applying a full-coverage foundation, I know I can rely on this product to create the perfect base. One thing I will say is that thanks to the super creamy, hydrating formula, it might not be the best option for really oily skin types. However, if your skin is on the drier side, then you are bound to fall in love with this product.

You know how being lit by sunlight makes your skin look amazing? This is like that effect, bottled. What truly sets this product apart is its pearlescent glow, which gives the skin a radiant sheen, making it look like you’ve hydrated with two litres of water, been to a Pilates class, had a facial, and then just sauntered out of the spa. It’s not a skin tint or foundation, but it does offer a blurring effect upon application, so I like to use it on the days when I don't want to wear makeup, but still want my skin to look glowing and blurred.

While the formula has a subtle beige tint, it blends seamlessly into a transparent glow on my skin tone. There are now four shades of Glowscreen, which cater more to a variety of deeper and fairer skin tones. I wear Sunrise, the fairest shade, which has a subtle gold champagne shimmer. Not glittery particles, but rather a radiant sheen that makes your skin glow with a capital G. It has a creamy texture that sinks in quickly, and it looks great worn alone to subtly tint your complexion, or as a radiant primer underneath makeup. It doesn't exacerbate my acne or skin sensitivity, and it does have a moisturising quality, which works well for drier skin types too, thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid.

If you prefer a matte finish, you'll want to steer away from this (try the Unseen Sunscreen instead, which is completely invisible and matte). But as someone who loves looking glowy, I think this SPF is so worth it. I do have sensitive eyes, and I find that it can irritate my eyes a little, so I use another SPF around my eye area and this one elsewhere. My only other hesitation is the price, but as skin experts always tell me, the best SPF is the one you want to wear every day, and I will always want to use this.

We all know how important daily sunscreen application is. According to Collingwood-English, sunscreen sticks and sprays are not necessarily reliable for your initial SPF application, as it can be hard to get a good amount of coverage. "I'd recommend these for touch-ups only, and to use a lotion or liquid instead where possible," she adds.

Since I am typically out of the house for around ten hours each day, I for one, am never without a sunscreen stick in my handbag. Considering that it's arguably the most essential step in your skincare routine, as well as one of the most recommended products by dermatologists and estheticians, there is still a lot of confusion and misinformation out there surrounding sunscreen and how to apply sunscreen. Skincare experts tout the best SPF products as one of the effective anti-ageing ingredients, with benefits that range from fading hyperpigmentation to preventing the free radical damage that contributes to collagen breakdown. Even more importantly, applying your sunscreen correctly can make all the difference when it comes to preventing long-term and serious damage such as skin cancer.

It's always a good idea to get a good grasp of how the ingredients you're using work, but with sunscreen in particular, getting clued up can make it easier to understand how to apply and use it properly and therefore make it more effective. Especially important when there are so many myths and mysteries out there surrounding sun care and SPF application.

Even if you're one of the savviest skincare shoppers, you probably have some questions about how to apply sunscreen correctly, which sun creams are the best for different skin types, and what the difference is between chemical and physical (mineral) SPFs.

So, with the help of skincare expert and cosmetic scientist Hannah Collingwood English and Ava Matthews, founder of Ultra Violette, we've taken a deep dive into all things sun care, covering your most asked questions about SPF. How often should you be wearing SPF?

First up, the most important question. If you're wondering whether you need to wear SPF even in winter or on cloudy days, the answer is yes. "UV rays are the number one contributor of premature ageing and UVA rays are around all the time, so unless you want to age faster than nature intended, you need to wear SPF every day no matter what the weather is like outside," says Matthews. "Genetics will only get you so far! It’s far easier (and cheaper!!) to prevent the damage than it is to fix it afterwards."

If you're reluctant to add yet another step to your skincare routine, Matthews advises thinking of SPF application as a daily habit like brushing your teeth. "If you're going to do one thing for your skin every day, apply sunscreen," she stresses. "It's the foundation of any good skincare routine - and is critical to overall skin health."

What's the best level of SPF to use?

"Because most people don't wear enough sunscreen, I'd suggest using the highest SPF you can, so 50+ ideally," says Collingwood English. "This way if you fall short in your application, you're not ending up with an actual SPF of something scary like 10!" If your previous experience of thick and chalky high-factor sunscreens is putting you off reaching for a factor 50, think again. In the past few years, innovations in skincare formulas and ingredients have meant there's a new generation of sunscreens on the market. Modern sunscreens are lightweight, dewy, hydrating, and actually enjoyable to use—you'll find our favourites listed below.

How much SPF should you use?

There is a lot of misinformation out there about how much sunscreen to apply, but according to Collingwood English, more is always more. "For face it works out to about a gram, so just under a quarter of a teaspoon," she advises. "If you're doing face, neck and ears then do a half teaspoon. Wear one teaspoon per limb, and one teaspoon each for the front and back of your torso. For the full body that's 6-7 teaspoons."

"Most people don’t actually apply the correct amount of product to ensure they’re getting the correct SPF protection on the bottle," adds Matthews. "But what people don't realise is if you use less than this you're potentially not getting the SPF listed on the bottle."

What's the best way to apply SPF?

Just as most makeup artists would recommend applying foundation in multiple light layers to get the best coverage, Collingwood English recommends this technique when asked how best to apply sunscreen. "People tend to miss spots and so I like to think about it as similar to layers of paint—two thin coats is better than one thick coat," she explains. "It dries down better this way, too, so it's less likely to be disturbed by sweat or clothing, etc."

What are the best SPF formulations?

These days as well as traditional SPF creams, there are also sunscreen serums, SPF sprays, sunscreen sticks, and even powders, which can be used to apply sun protection over makeup or to hard-to-target areas such as the ears and scalp. "I'd recommend sprays, sticks, and powders for touch-ups only, and to use a lotion or liquid for initial application where possible," advises Collingwood English.

Should you reapply SPF throughout the day?

"The UV is strongest between 10am and 2pm. When you've put your sunscreen on at 7am it's not going to be a perfectly even film by 2pm, because our skin creates oil and sweat and because we touch our faces," explains Collingwood English. "We end up with gaps in the coverage, making our skin more susceptible to UV damage and sunburn."

You'll notice that the directions of a sunscreen will tell you to reapply every two hours or after towelling, swimming, or sweating. Again, this is so that you're maintaining the original protection factor (e.g. SPF 50) of your sunscreen throughout the day. "Things like being in sunlight, touching your face, scratching your skin, and holding a phone to your ear all contribute to the breakdown of the film that SPF creates on skin," adds Matthews. "So the protection level of your SPF is not the same at 8am when it’s been freshly applied as it would be at 12pm"

How and how often should you reapply SPF?

"You should really be reapplying every two to three hours when in direct sunlight and in peak UV-index months," says Matthews. "A spray formula makes this so much easier—keep some in your bag and top up every few hours."

Matthews' brand, Ultra Violette, launched an SPF50 sunscreen mist a couple of years ago, specifically designed for top-ups throughout the day. "Reapplication of SPF has historically been difficult, it's annoying and will likely ruin your makeup," she explains. "A mist sunscreen makes this so much easier, but until now, a spray sunscreen that doesn't sting the eyes or melt your makeup off due to higher oil content in the formulation has been hard to find." It took Matthews and her co-founder over six years to land on a formula that tackled all these common pain points. "Now, a few mists under or over makeup or skincare and your lunch-time SPF top-up is sorted," she tells me. "No greasy finish, no stinging for sensitive skin – just a subtle glow to refresh your makeup and keep your skin protected at all hours of the day."

Can you put SPF on over makeup?

"Ideally, you'd reapply in the same way you did your first application," advises Collingwood English. If you don't wear makeup, then this is relatively easy, but for makeup wearers, she recommends using sticks and sprays, which are specifically designed to be applied over makeup. "You can also sponge a liquid sunscreen on top of your makeup," she adds.

With sprays such as Preen Screen, Matthews recommends holding the product 20cm from your face and applying it with your eyes closed. "Do nine sprays applied in the shape of a 'T' and an 'X' across your face to get the appropriate level of protection," she recommends. "Once the product is applied, allow it to dry slightly before opening the eyes and then you should be good to go."

How should you apply SPF to your scalp and lips?

Our scalp and lips are often forgotten areas which need just as much sun protection as the rest of our skin does—if not more. Our scalps because they are directly exposed to the sky and our lips because the skin there is so thin and delicate.

While there are a couple of SPF products specifically created to protect the scalp, buying into a whole new product category isn't necessarily essential. "For the scalp, you can easily apply a regular sunscreen to your parting," says Collingwood English. "And don't forget (or underestimate the power of) a hat!" For lips, she advises shopping for one of the best SPF lip balms and applying a lot at a time, with frequent top-ups throughout the day.

Is water resistant sunscreen a myth?

It's important to remember that water resistant doesn't equate to waterproof. "There's specific testing conducted to substantiate water resistant claims on sunscreens, but it gets confusing when they say something like 'four hours water resistant' because you have to reapply after two hours anyway, and you probably shouldn't be in the sun for four hours," explains Collingwood English. "That's too long, which is where SPF protective clothing can help."

How safe are makeup and skincare products with SPF in?

Both Collingwood English and Matthews agree that the SPF protection provided by makeup products isn't safe to rely on. "The thing is, no one's applying a gram of foundation to their faces and then reapplying it throughout the day," explains Collingwood English. "I really take issue with this claim in the makeup category because people think they're protected and they're really not."

"Even if it’s a foundation with SPF 50+, you’d need to apply so much to get adequate coverage which we know most people don’t have the appetite for," agrees Matthews. "This is why we talk about having an SPF wardrobe and layering SPF as needed so you can ensure you're always getting the right level of protection." Basically, stick to your morning SPF application and your top ups throughout the day, and ignore any protection claims you see on your foundation or makeup primer.

Will sunscreen dry out your skin?

In the past, sunscreen formulas have been notoriously dry and chalky in texture, which has lead to misconceptions that SPF dries out your skin. This certainly isn't the case, and nowadays there are plenty of hydrating SPF formulas which simultaneously protect and moisturise your skin. Essentially, it's all about finding the formula and texture that works best for your skin type. "Some sunscreens with a matte finish can feel drying, but the majority of sunscreens are a lovely moisturising texture," adds Collingwood English. "Sun damage can certainly dry out your skin, though!"

Is sunscreen okay to use if you have oily and breakout-prone skin?

Likewise, there are just as many myths about SPF contributing to oily skin, clogged pores, and breakouts. Again, much of misconception is based on peoples experience with old-school sun creams, and according to Collingwood English, wearing sunscreen will actually help to reduce oiliness. "The oil in your skin is oxidised by the sun, making it thicker and more likely to clog pores," she explains. "Sunscreen can help prevent this, but be sure to cleanse thoroughly at the end of the day. I'd suggest spending 30 seconds to a minute working your cleanser into your skin, then removing it with a very soft cloth."

What is the difference between chemical and physical SPF?

If you start researching into different types of sunscreen you'll find many people debating the benefits of chemical SPF versus physical SPF. "They're actually not as different as they're made out to be," says Collingwood English. "Both types mostly absorb UV radiation so your skin doesn't have to, but physical UV filters are white pigments so they can create a white-grey-purple cast on your skin—especially on medium to dark skin tones."

"You can get a higher SPF rating while keeping the sunscreen comfortable with chemical filters," she adds. "Traditionally, physical sunscreens have been recommended for more sensitive skin, but many chemical formulas are now designed specifically with sensitive skin in mind too. Because chemical sunscreens tend to have a higher SPF rating, they're arguably the better option if you're sensitive because they're protecting better from any sensitivity that the sun could create!"

How can you find an SPF that won't leave a white cast on dark skin?

If you have dark skin then you've probably experienced an additional struggle when it comes to finding and applying sunscreen. Many SPFs leave a white, chalky cast on dark skin which can make your complexion appear washed out and dull. Fortunately, this is another issue that modern SPF formulas have dealt with. "Chemical formulas in particular are less likely to create that grey-purple cast on dark skin, so opt for those," advises Collingwood English.

When should you apply SPF in your skincare routine?

Both experts agree that SPF should always be applied as the final step in your skincare routine, after serums and moisturiser. You should allow it to dry fully before putting your makeup on, to ensure that the formula isn't compromised and diluted.

With so many things to consider when choosing a sunscreen—factor, price point and texture to name just three—deciding on a decent SPF can be tricky at the best of times. But when you have sensitive skin as well, the quest to find a sun cream can feel overwhelming, to say the least.

"There are many different sunscreen formulas on the market which use different types of UV filters," explains Pippa Harman, cosmetic scientist and formulator and co-founder of Renude. "With synthetic (commonly referred to as chemical) sunscreens, you need to ensure a range of filters to block the full range of the UV spectrum. Some of these synthetic filters can cause irritation in more sensitive skin types—usually itchy or watery eyes or itchy skin."

So does this mean that people with sensitive skin should avoid chemical sunscreens entirely? Hiva Fassihi, La Roche-Posay's consultant dermatologist, believes that it's important to work out why you might have sensitive skin, as everyone's definition of sensitivity differs.

Why Might Skin Be Sensitive to Sunscreen?

If you're dealing with facial eczema, rosacea or hay fever, then Fassihi recommends consulting a doctor or dermatologist "for advice on the management of the underlying cause of skin sensitivity so that they can tolerate sunscreens better."

However, Fassihi also pointed out one possible cause of skin sensitivity that can be managed at home—harsh skincare ingredients. "Many individuals overuse active ingredients such as retinoids or acids (AHA/BHAs) in their daily routine, which can damage their skin barrier," Fassihi explains. By dialling back on some of the stronger ingredients in your skincare routine during the summer months, you might find that chemical sunscreens are no issue after all.

Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen

So if you really do have sensitive skin year-round, then what are your options when it comes to sun protection? "It is generally recommended that people with sensitive skin should opt for a physical/mineral sunscreen formula where possible," advises Harman. "There are just two types of mineral filter on the market, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which are both white powders and offer broad-spectrum protection."

There is a downside, though, and it's a big one. "The problem with these filters is that they can create a white cast on medium and deep skin tones, so they are not suitable for everyone," says Harman. Instead, Harman suggests looking for a sunscreen labelled hypoallergenic. "Although there is no standardised definition for this term, it means that the product has been tested on people with sensitive skin and caused a reaction in a very small number, typically under a set threshold like 5%," she adds. "It doesn't mean it is guaranteed not to cause a reaction, but it means it is less likely to than products that haven't passed this type of testing."

If you are going to stick with a chemical sunscreen rather than a physical one, then there are some key ingredients to avoid. "Any ingredient can cause allergic reactions, but the most common are chemical UV filters like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octocrylene, methoxycinnamate, benzophenone-2 and benzophenone-3," advises celebrity facialist Ada Ooi MAcS, TCM, NADA, the founder of 001 Skincare. "If you suffer from sensitive skin, you may also want to avoid fragrance and dyes in your sunscreens, as these are common causes of skin allergies. The best way to avoid irritating your skin is to patch-test the product behind your ear or on your wrist and wait around 48 hours so that you can see if any irritation occurs before you apply it all over your skin."
