The warm weather and lack of layers that come along with it allow for more fun and freedom when choosing your accessories. There may not be many parameters when shopping for summer accessories, but something I always avoid is ones that lean tacky. Good news: The five summer accessory trends I'm highlighting below are anything but. In fact, they do the opposite of cheapening your outfits—they elevate them in one fell swoop.

Indeed, adopters of the check fashion trend aren’t wearing it in a way that’s pining for the blistering chill, cosy scarves and hot water bottles. Instead, they’re wearing it in a way that feels subversive and vibrant, especially during a time of year defined by picnic blankets strewn over verdant parkland and the checkerboard tablecloths of alfresco lunches.

There’s something quite ‘90s about the trend, courtesy of the fact that checked shirts were a staple in the wardrobes of fashion icons from the decade like Kurt Cobain, Claire Danes and Winona Ryder. However, rather than the more grunge inclinations of these members of the celebrity style set, wearing checks this summer feels far more minimal. This is down to the fact that the check print trend has become such a ubiquitous motif, cropping up in the collections of romantic and understated designers like The Row, Faithful and Posse.

Style Notes: Londoners are some of the most stylish people I've ever met, and commuting in and out of the city left me wanting to elevate my own style. I've lost count of the number of friends, colleagues and folks on the Tube whom I've stopped to ask where they got their shoes or coat or dress. They're impeccably dressed year-round, and summer is no different, even with 2026's unprecedented heatwave(s). This summer specifically has seen a shift toward Y2K styles, but noughties-inspired options that fit well into today's modern age. London-based fashion creator Chloe Butler has perfected this concept, pairing nostalgic silhouettes (like capris and wedge flip-flops) with a classic denim jacket, and in a colour palette that will always feel relevant.

Style Notes: Paris knows how to do chic and elegant unlike anywhere else. Even amid a heatwave, the outfits still uphold a level of sophistication that I'll forever applaud. Basics is an underwhelming term, because here even Parisians' staple summer wardrobe pieces, such as vests, satin skirts and heels, look supremely elevated. Style Notes: Copenhagen as a whole embodies the Scandinavian minimalism so many of us know and adore, but no matter how minimal, it never feels simplistic. Ahead of my first internship in London many years ago, I decided to make a quick stop in Copenhagen, and I've been yearning to return ever since. In the summer, city dwellers here combine a multitude of chic basics for looks that feel innately elegant. Regardless of season, they know how to execute an outfit that feels effortless yet personal. Exhibit A? The founder of Clòimh, a Scottish-born, Amsterdam-based knitwear brand, Hollie Mercedes Peters, styled a striped shirt with jeans for a timeless combination, but added a chic structured handbag, flip-flops and a studded belt for the perfect level of flair.

5. Lisbon

Style Notes: Portugal has a special place in my heart. When I was running my footwear label, I had shoes handmade by a small family-run factory outside of Porto. It's a vibrant country, and every city I've had the joy of exploring there has always inspired me with its fashionable residents. There's a laidback air that always feels fun, and there's always plenty of colour. Lisbon is particularly stylish, and with my first visit there coming up this September, I've been doing ample research. I love Portuguese fashion creator Barbara Santiago's choice of teal and bold red, which is a vibrant combination for summer wear. The black bag and sandals are perfect for grounding the look, too. The use of colour and pattern has inspired my minimalist heart to pack a little more vibrantly and embrace a bolder palette for the rest of summer.
