A friend once told me that I'm much more of a cold-weather dresser than that of a hot one. I prefer to layer, build up textures and to tie it all together with some wool-content items for good measure. My long-time go-to item of clothing has and will always be a wide-fit pair of trousers with a pleat detail and belt loops. I feel like you just can't go wrong with the right pair and they can be styled with knitwear, fitted tops, chunky tops, slouchy tops, big coats, small coats, trainers, loafers...I could go on.

The pub is a place where many a memory is made, where friends come together to discuss new life events and (often) to fawn over one or two excellent outfit choices. Personally, I love the classic British pub and all that frequent it, because it provides the perfect setting for that casual winding down, debriefing or meeting up. And whilst we were blessed with an Indian summer, the recent autumnal change in season means that those pub-garden drinks will have to come indoors again (begrudgingly for some), and so a little more coverage in the toe department is a must.

I don't really believe that the world needs more skincare brands. Right now, I feel as though the beauty industry has maxed out on everything it can provide us in terms of skincare. Unless there's a game-changing new innovation, my general opinion is that I don't want to know about any new product. If anyone is going to launch a skincare business in 2022, it better do something that nothing else can. Personally, I'd much prefer it if brands used their resources to educate the skincare consumer honestly instead of investing time and energy into launching more products.

It's safe to say, therefore, that when I first heard fashion designer Stella McCartney was launching a skincare line, my eyes rolled hard. It's not that I don't like Stella McCartney and all she's done for the world of fashion; it's just that I want skincare to be a space reserved for, well, experts. I'm simply just not sure the beautysphere needs any more skincare lines created by people who aren't fully immersed in the science of it all. And when I heard that Stella by Stella McCartney beauty was set to be "rooted in nature," I was fully prepared to never give it a second thought.

But my journalistic instinct got the better of me, and I needed to know more. The truth is I've found Stella McCartney's impact on the fashion industry admirable—her environmental standpoint has really helped shine a light on unsustainable practices and set a precedent for the rest of the industry. So, I thought, if Stella McCartney could make a difference to the world of fashion, what's to say she can't do the same for the beauty industry?

As it turns out, Stella by Stella McCartney skincare is a feat, and I'm genuinely happy about its existence. First of all, let's touch on sustainability. It feels needless to say that the line is vegan and cruelty-free (of course), but beyond that, the collection has also put a ban on over 2000 ingredients in its products due to environmental concerns around their production and extracting (including popular silicones and carbomers, which remain points of contention among environmental experts). Impressively, the packaging itself is created with a reduced number of virgin materials, is recyclable and champions a totally reinvented form of refill with recyclable sachets obtained from certified renewable sources. (Carbon emissions are drastically reduced via shopping refills due to minimised packaging and weight.)

Above all, though, the thing I am most impressed by is the line-up itself. While most skincare brands are keen to sell countless products to us, designed to generate more sales, more money, and as a result more waste, Stella by Stella McCartney is a small, considered line-up of just three products. Utilising ingredients from nature, they aim to care for and nurture the skin in a no-fuss, simple way, focusing on essential hydration and skin health while they're at it. Not only do the products look great on the shelf, but they are exceptionally beautiful on the skin, too. Oh, and if that isn't enough to tempt you, the fresh but gentle scent (inspired by the Scottish highlands) was blended by none other than Francis Kurkdjian (yes, the man behind Baccarat Rouge 540) and smells every bit as soothing as you'd expect. Each season as fashion month begins, editors, influencers and fashion enthusiasts are bombarded with new-season styles. With four separate cities putting on events and several shows each day, there’s a veritable banquet of looks and designers to keep track of. And while newness is, of course, the name of the game, this season, I found myself experiencing a recurring sense of déjà vu.

In New York, Milan and Paris, several designers and brands sent looks down the runway which felt oddly familiar, immediately conjuring up nostalgia for the early 2000s. Miu Miu created barely-there miniskirts adorned with box pleats and thin belts, a look which Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and every other Y2K It girl heavily invested in back in 2002. Cargo trousers (yes, cargo trousers!) were back on the agenda at Tom Ford, validating the questionable fashion choices I made as a pre-teen. Keyhole cut-outs were seen at LaQuan Smith, Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham, harking back to the red carpet looks spotted on Beyoncé, Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry in the early aughts, and exposed midriffs were seen left, right and centre, reminiscent of the looks pop stars used to sport in music videos and at events.

1. The Micro Miniskirt 

Thigh-grazing skirts were a trend we saw across the board for spring/summer 2022. Though, no brand created them quite as itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny as Miu Miu. The Miuccia Prada–founded label sent models down the runway in low-rise micro minis adorned with thin belts, immediately casting the mind back to Hilton’s heyday, when the heiress was known for wearing almost the exact same look. 

2. The Tassle Crop Top

The moment I saw this Stella McCartney tassel crop top hit the runway, I knew there was something familiar about it. It only took a little bit of googling to discover Britney Spears wore something very similar back in 2002. Crops of all kinds were a wardrobe staple in the early aughts, often paired alongside low-rise jeans for the perfect "jeans and a nice top” look. It seems we’ll be bringing this back for summer 2022.

3. The Peakaboo Dress

The similarities between the two looks and how they are styled below is uncanny, right down to the fur-covered outwear. Is it possible LaQuan Smith had this 2003 Beyoncé look on his mood board? I wouldn’t blame him. We may never know, but you can guarantee we’re about to see a resurgence in this peekaboo cut-out silhouette.

4. Cargo Trousers

As a young girl deprived of the practicality of real pockets on jeans, I can distinctly remember myself living in cargo trousers throughout my pre-teen years. With endorsements from pop stars like Fergie, Spears and Christina Aguilera, they were a bona fide cool-girl investment. Tom Ford has now decided it’s time for the item’s revival, as the designer sent a pair of bright-green cargos down the runway for spring/summer 2022. Of course, the full Y2K-inspired look wouldn’t have been complete without a bare midriff, so Tom Ford styled the trousers alongside a bra top, reminiscent of a look Fergie wore in 2003.

5. The Interesting LBD

The early aughts weren’t all loud prints and miniature hemlines. The era had its own brand of minimalism, depicted so perfectly below by none other than Aniston. The actress wore a black column dress complete with keyhole cut-outs to the 2003 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which captures the feeling of a look Victoria Beckham recently debuted as a part of her S/S 22 collection.

6. Cut-Out Craze

On the topic of cut-outs, Stella McCartney utilised the trend throughout several styles in her latest collection. McCartney’s show featured shoulder and stomach cut-out dresses paraded down the runway in several colours and patterns, and I couldn’t help but notice how similar this felt to the looks Destiny’s Child wore in 2000.

7. The Tie-Up Top

From Christina Aguilera to Rihanna, every pop star of the early aughts had a tie-up-top moment of some description. The detail was often found on the front or side of belly-bearing tops and paired alongside—you guessed it—low-rise jeans. Charlotte Knowles tapped into the style for her S/S 22 show, going all-in on the Y2K vibes, which will no doubt appeal to her very Gen Z fan base.

8. The Red Carpet–Worthy Silhouette

Are you sensing a theme here? Interesting silhouettes and cut-outs were big news in 2003, as evidenced here by Berry’s red carpet gown. The trend will be headlining again in the not-too-distant future, solidified in part by Victoria Beckham’s S/S 22 collection.

9. The Power Suit

Power suits have taken centre stage on the runway for a few seasons now, but for summer 2022, the look will transcend office attire and move into the partywear category. At Fendi and Versace, we saw bold suits paired alongside bra tops, which is an outfit formula TLC championed in the late ’90s.

Australian denim brand Outland Denim chooses to manufacture its products in organic cotton, which in turn uses 91% less blue water than traditional cotton. As an ethically minded company, the brand is also committed to providing employment for vulnerable people of varying backgrounds. 

Known for her use of sustainable and ethical materials, Stella McCartney aims to use recycled polyester wherever possible. As a vegetarian-friendly brand, it never uses leather, fur or feathers. 

With a brand slogan that states, "Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. We’re #2," Reformation is committed to creating clothes with less impact on the environment. The brand has been carbon neutral since 2015 and uses sustainable materials, as well as deadstock fabrics and repurposed vintage.

Meghan Markle (or should we say the Duchess of Sussex) has changed out of her Givenchy by Clare Waight Keller wedding gown into a custom slinky dress by Stella McCartney for the evening reception at Frogmore House. For her second wedding dress Meghan turned to another British female designer, Stella McCartney to create a more Hollywood gown.

Although the evening reception is a private event, the couple waved as they drove in a vintage E-type Jaguar with the personalised license plate E190518 in a cinematic moment that looked like it was straight from a James Bond film. Meghan opted for a white halterneck gown made of silk crepe with a fitted bodice and a flared floor-sweeping skirt, with a huge aquamarine ring on her finger that belonged to Princess Diana. As with her first wedding dress this is a sleek, modern look with no embellishment or lace and a focus on clean lines. 

"Having two dresses has been a wedding trend limited to the few in recent years, with only 8% of brides in 2017 wearing two dresses on their wedding day,” says Bridebook.co.uk. “However, with Meghan's stunning choice of second dress and the high exposure of the event, we expect to see this as a trend that only gains in popularity in the coming years. For her second dress, Meghan has chosen a dress that is both consistent with her first dress with the pure white silk, and uniquely trend setting with the striking and modern combination of a high neck and open shoulders.

“High necks are the choice of wedding dress for 17% of UK brides, they are often paired with long sleeves (as seen on Pippa Middleton's dress),” adds Bridebook.co.uk. “Given the impact Kate Middleton's dress has had in the past 7 years, we expect to see clean bright white satin, and high necks and open shoulders dominate the wedding dress trends."

With these two dresses Meghan will change bridal trends, moving them away from lace to a cleaner more minimal designs. "We're thrilled to see Meghan embracing and leading a new trend in wedding dress style," say the experts at Bridalbook.co.uk. "Ever since Kate and William's weddings, lace has dominated wedding dresses in the UK, with 45% of UK brides wearing lace on their big day in 2017 and only 16% wearing satin or silk. Just as we started to pen a piece on how a girl can put one foot into a more sustainable fashion realm along comes their latest blockbuster project, Bright New Things, where all of the above is coming to life right now. Layering is a big thing in the world of the fashion elite—and it also happens to be one of the hardest skills to master, especially during the hot summer months. From one perspective, layering is a great way to stay cool, because you can remove layers as you see fit—but if you do it the wrong way, it's not a great look and you'll end up sweltering. 

To help us navigate the challenging world of summer layering, we recruited the help of a bona fide expert: our resident stylist Marissa Webb. Webb is very well-known in the fashion community for her top-notch layering skills, so she's the perfect person to tell us just how to do it.

"Layering isn’t as complicated as we often times think it is. There’s no real formula to it, or rules," Webb says. "You have to simply give it a try; but there are a few things to consider while styling with layers."

Usually it’s easiest if you think of the lightest layer first, but I also like to do the reverse. Try a cropped top or tank over your tunic or sweater.

Don’t put limitations on the items in your closet. A dress can easily convert to a top when styled with your favourite bottoms; a trench dress can easily morph into a lightweight jacket. Just like many things in life, our clothing has more to offer then we usually give it credit for.

One of my favourite and probably easiest tricks is to put items together of the same colour for a saturated, monochrome look. For example, try a navy T-shirt with a navy blazer and a navy trench.

Think in colour. Even pattern-mixing becomes second nature if you start looking at colour first; a black polka dot print pairs perfectly with black stripes, a red floral easily fits with a red geometric print. If you’re not a big fan of prints, try solid colours in varying shades.

Think proportion: if you’re wearing something skinny on the bottom, layer up easy on the top. If you're slouchy on the bottom, layer up with slim shapes on the top.

Summer style is all about being light, airy, and unburdened by the layers (literal and metaphysical) that typically accompany fall fashion. As lovely as that is, it can still be a challenge to strike the balance of being just the right amount of casual while still remaining stylish.

Congratulations! It's a girl! After months and months of anticipation, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a baby girl today, May 2 at 8:34 a.m. Prince George's new sister weighed 8lbs 3oz.

Business of Fashion’s editor-in-chief, Imran Amed, sat down with Stella McCartney in London earlier this week to discuss how she built the world’s first sustainable luxury brand, and the conversation was filled with interesting tidbits from the designer. McCartney’s brand is renowned for avoiding all animal products, including leather, fur, skins and feathers, which the designer admitted can be a challenge. However, she believes it’s a worthy challenge, and one the larger fashion world should be taking on, telling the audience:

“It’s extraordinary how old-fashioned fashion is. It’s medieval to me that the industry still kills millions of animals a year. Leather is one of the most harmful parts of fashion. It’s not a luxurious method. Leather is not really a by-product. It’s a myth.”

It’s a striking statement from someone in an industry with a majority stake in leather goods. But the question that remains: Will other designers catch on? And if they do, will the challenge of producing non-animal products be sustainable in the long term? We suppose only time will tell.
